Every time I see an eGPU setup I think it looks sort of cool. Then you see the prices on the eGPU is about the same or more than a full laptop.

My hangup on it is I like that we can hook up an egpu. But the fact that at the moment it's an actual necesity in order to get acceptable performance out of it kind of ruins the whole portable part of the experience. And yes, I know the upcoming tweaks will help. Just still kind of annoyed that we're being used as paying beta testers because they rushed this thing out instead of waiting another month or two.

Clearly it is, buying a gaming laptop is the best way to not waste money instead of adding all these extended graphics cards to this device imo

You have the SWITCH combo here. eGPU for couch gaming then unplugged and take the Lenovo on the Go. You will not need to upgrade that eGPU if a New Legion Go comes out. A Laptop is a good gaming and PC replacement but the mobility to play on the go plus terrible batteries 🪫 are not suitable.
I think this is great cuz Now if you buy a laptop, you can get whatever you like and keep your gaming on the Legion go. The Macbook Pros have great batteries life vs Windows laptops and you can travel with both the Macbook and the Legion Go. BEFORE i always needed a laptop that could do both things so i got a Razerblade. But now there is really no need for that.

      Short-sighted though.
      Yes, this isn't cheap. But;
A gaming laptop with an RTX 4070 will cost about £1700.
A Legion Go will cost £700, the 4070 £570 and an eGPU probably about £300. So not dissimilar in price point.
But the eGPU with a 4070 will probably outperform the laptop somewhat, but that's not the real benefit.
The real benefit comes from that in a couple of years, you could then upgrade the RTX 4070 to an RTX 5070 for the same £580 or so and get all the performance that comes from that upgrade.
Whereas with a laptop, you'll need to buy a whole new laptop.

That is when you realize that PC gaming is more akin to Tom & Jerry and not actual gaming. That is no different than trying to squeeze so much power out of a car that it's undrivable everyday even with mundane task like a grocery run.

to be fair Linux isn't why eGPU isn't supported on Steam Deck , its the lack of Thunderbolt/USB4 ports
Steam Deck 2 will more than likely have said ports. eGPU is supported by Arch Linux already.

    • @mathias6423

But the Asus Ally is locked/limited to only using their external graphic cards, that are kinda hard to find in stock and when the 2-3 alternatives of Egpu for Asus is available to buy they are really expensive. If I understand it correctly the Legion Go does have a universal USB4/Thunderbolt so you can connect whatever graphic card you want ? Even though Asus own connection port is probably faster you could buy a RTX 3070 for 550$ and connect to the Legion Go or am I wrong ? I just recently heard about the Legion Go so I have not studied everything about it yet.
But to have a handheld unit I can play in my bed before going to sleep like a Nintendo Switch, and then take it to my friends house at weekends and connect it to a monitor, gaming mouse&keyboard and an external graphic card and play Battlefield 5 in 1440P with good FPS sounds amazing

the controllers are pretty bad attachment wise, they need a weird amount of force on their plastic rails to detach and it's pretty bad, it feels like they are going to break from mid term average use, they really feel awfull to detach and attach back to the device raising concern about the longevity of the joycon ability and the plastic parts and rails attaching it to the device. It does really feel like it's going to break every time you put them in and out.

Id like to see at the very least a 3 month or 6 month update after the fact of continuous use. Lenovo laptop hinges have been pretty mid for past few years but hopefully since its just one product and the connectors on this is a huge deal, they actually took time to work it out. one word: Moonlight . Its made by nvidia and is free to use. Stop wasting money on egpus, hide ur pc in a corner and connect to its gpu through internet. You can also send it to sleep after u r done easily, no cables or complexity. There r nice tuts online to set it up PROPERLY. If you do it right it will be much better than any egpu (which are a money grab anyways).

Have there been driver/software adjustments to USB4? That perf drop is smaller than I'd thought. Sure it's 20% versus what a 4090 in a Desktop with PCIE 4 16x would be in God of War. But it's retaining 80% of the performance with 75% less bandwidth (40gbps = 8GB/s vs the 32GB/s of PCIE 4 16x)

Really wanted to pick up the GPD G1, but then I saw 650-750$ and was shocked. Can't wait to get some competition in that size of eGPU, paying nearly 3x what a 7600xt costs is just insane even for the portability it brings to the table.
I probably would have bought it even at $500, but I think it's reasonable to hope we get similar products (with varying tiers of GPU inside) for the 300-600$ range - the G1 7600M XT being closer to that 300 USD range!

I use VS Code to SSH into the GPU my company's GPU cluster, so I do not run demanding tasks on the Ally. But for Email, Office applications and VS Code the 15W Performance mode is plenty enough. Its absolutely quiet while its super smooth and snappy. The trick has always been to play games at the most battery-friendly settings so as not to turn the device into a frying pan. The GPD G1 itself is a boiling brick after an hour use.

I even uninstall the internal graphic driver and roll the window 11 to window 10 and my gpu can't even detected on the device manager. Well then I buy a gpd g1 and it is directly connected with my legion go but once the legion go link with GPD G1 it just cannot change the 2k resolution to full HD anymore. It also can't connect to my monitor after connecting to GPD G1. Even though it's is connected with the Radeon RX7600XT and I could clearly see it on my task manager and device manager now but the problem is when I launch the game the frame rate is very low and not even exceed 10 FPS which really different with the scenarios shown on the video. TH-camrs who post this video should demonstrate all tutorials regarding this video. You can't treat the video as normal showcase cause there's problems with the viewer which actually follows the information delivered on the video. I Own the SteamDeck and im really considering to buy the Legion Go, because the SteamDeck is just to slow, It was a bless, but all the tinkering needed to get AAA Titles to run acceptable is sadly too much. Also the SteamDeck does not have a USB4 Port and you can not use an eGPU.

Being a heavily PC user and only gaming on PC, I always wanted a handheld mini PC and the Lgion Go Pro was on my radar but couldn't see myself spending $750 until a sale came through that would be worth it with all the updates release to make it absolutely worth it. So, at the same time I was waiting to see how much the PS5 pro was gonna cost also because I was debating between the PS5 pro or the Legion Go as I already have a powerful desktop and laptop that can run anything easily but wanted to simply either add finally what I think is a great playstation with tech advancement that rivaled the advancement from ps1 to the ps3; or, simply a handheld mini PC that can do it all. Then the PS5 Pro announcement came through and we all realized that the PS5 Pro isn't worth it, then, Leveno secretly swooped in and gave their legions go Pro a sale to steal the market before Sony release their Ps5 Pro because they realize the PS5 Pro isnt that impressive either and there are people like me waiting for either one. Legion Go Pro 1 TB just went on sale and I just saved a $100 and decided to just do it. So the Legion go is just as impressive as the PS5 and PS5 pro and cheaper than the PS5 pro and can also be a mini PC. As a PC user and gamer, the Legion Go is the best handheld in the market with AMD's updates of FSR 3 with frame generations along with Levono's updates to ensure the best butter smoothe experience with the Legion Go. For PC, I only get intel and Nvidia but for handheld, nothing beats AMD (at the moment) but I think that is where AMD wants to increase its market share, which is a smart move. Take it where it counts as they knew Intel and Nvidia has none.
I can't wait to fully push the Lenevo Legion Go Pro to its full capabilities and it is the jack of all trades that PC users have been waiting for. Go get yourself one as they're on sale right now.

tbh, considering prices in my country, gpd g1 and lenovo legion go cost ~750$ both (1500$ in total). its actually almost the same price for lenovo legion slim 5 with rtx 4060. The only thing left - monitor xD.
    Anyway pretty considerable option regardless

You don'y have to buy full case with full desktop power supply and management board for 300 USD. All those are tunderbolt 2 era hardware from 6y ago.

I honestly would love a handheld gaming pc and egpu set up. My only concern is the longevity of the combo. I’d be really sad spending all that money for the pair just to have it only last two or three years before I can’t even handle games at 30 fps💀

Really nice test man! 👍🏼👍🏼 you should note that the 40 gibt’s usbc 4.0 speed is impaired if you use the cable for charging at the same time. It is often the case that the full speed cannot be reached when charging at the same time. With TB4, this is not a problem because there are also restrictions on cable length here and the cables must also be certified. With USBC, I’m not quite sure if this is really feasible. so if you have time, test it with a second USB C cable that is only used for charging. Try not to enable a charge with the first USB C cable, to which the video interface is connected. And try to stay at a maximum cable length of 70 cm. Use an TB4 Cable. Do not connect anything else on the egpu usb ports. Disable the internal Display. This allows us to prevent a bandwidth limit of the USBC connection. 👍🏼👌🏼🤝🏼

Can you do an eGPU setup comparison of Legion GO vs Ally with XGM? It seems Legion GO is more seamless with the eGPU, similar to the switch. Ally is clunky with activation deactivation of XGM

I would love to see one of these x86 handheld's with with 780m have a OCUlink for eGPU so I could use it at home as a 4K machine but had the portability that I could take my games on the go in handheld mode, but dock at home as a full workstation. I would use Fedora or Suse Aoen micro as Gnome on a 1080p screen is perfect and fedora run steam for gaming.

in my experience playing cyberpunk on the Go, Ill run it at high settings (a few things set to medium) with FSR on auto, and 1280x800 and itll still get a respectable 55-65 FPS.whats weird is if I set the FSR manually to say performance or ultra performance, the FPS dips down to the 40s, but auto works much better, and looks better too, keep RSR off though as it just looks fuzzy and bad.
