      That one hurt to read, especially when Horus realised he wasn't talking about Sanguinius. But about him to the Chaos gods because his son as he knew him was twisted into something so crude and corrupt he might as well be a dead corpse calling itself Horus

    Thank you for watching and I hope you enjoy this one. There’s so much to say about this particular episode!
    First of all, having read the entirety of the Siege of Terra series I was truly pleased with how the ending was done. I cannot imagine the pressure Dan Abnett must have felt when taking on the gargantuan task of finishing the Horus Heresy series, but personally I feel he did it justice. I really enjoyed the Siege of Terra series and of course, the 3 volumes that came up for The End and The Death (plus the Afterword of the author himself). I HIGHLY recommend you read the books because that way you can read and absorb the full details of what happened instead of relying on lore summaries like this one in which we have to cut out or not mention many of the details… so If you feel that in some parts we skipped something or a topic was not mentioned, you are probably right! Even then, this has turned out to be one of the longest videos we have done on the channel so far.
    Now, into the story itself, this is only an overview of what happened inside the Vengeful Spirit or shall we say, the warp. What stood up to me were the different traps that the Chaos Gods had prepared for the loyalists that would go to face the Warmaster.
    One that really stood out to me was the trap that awaited Rogal Dorn. Imagine the desperation of being the Praetorian of Terra, suddenly trapped in an endless desert with nowhere to go and knowing that Terra was still falling apart, knowing that the Emperor, Sanguinius, Valdor and the others were in peril, most likely also in a trap. His sense of duty crushing him from the inside at not being able to do anything must have been something else. Yet he endured. Even though at the end he was (arguably) about to fall into the temptation of wanting to spill Blood for the Blood God, he endured.
    Sanguinius’ death was also very hard to read (in a good way). His last moments were painful and like Horus said, the expectation of having the Great Angel say some last words that would surely go to legend being crushed by the fact that Sanguinius was too badly wounded and bloodied to even speak was not something I expected, yet it was a welcome detail. Having those unexpected little twists is what makes a good reading experience for me, of course this is a very personal thing. Many could argue that having Sanguinius say some last words or a condemnation to Horus would have been cool too, just like Sigismund did when he was killed by Abaddon.
    Speaking about surprises and unexpected twists, to me, one of the most epic scenes of the book and even the entire siege, was when Constantin Valdor and his battered Custodes were surrounded and outnumbered by the Sons of Horus (and I think also Word Bearers & daemons) and they were making a last stand. But then Rogal Dorn appeared to join them… and to see the Primarch of the Imperial Fists finally liberated from any restraint and just focused on fighting and being a warrior. I loved how he just joined the fray and started hacking, slashing and smashing the traitor forces, including terminators, neverborn and more.
    Then, to add more chaos to that particular fight, the Blood Angels arrived in a storm of fury that even the loyalists started to wonder which side they were on. We have to remember that by this point (shortly after the death of their Primarch Sanguinius) the Blood Angels were already consumed in what we know now as the Black Rage, a condition that was new and unexpected to the Blood Angels themselves and even more so to the ones around them! So everyone was more than confused when they saw the state that the Blood Angels were in. Just reminds me of a phrase that Dan Abnett coined perfectly “…the Blood Angels of Anabasis Company, in their divine insanity”. I got chills reading that part.
    Another character that had a big part to play and one who I really find interesting is the Emperor’s friend and confident: Malcador the Sigilite (or shall we say Malcador the Hero). He suffered a lot and died just to allow for Operation Anabasis to take place by temporarily taking His place upon the Golden Throne. He saw things that were perhaps too much for his own mind to handle, but then again, he was one of the most powerful psykers and one of the most mysterious, yet fascinating characters in the entire setting of Warhammer. While he was dying on the Throne, Malcador was the only one able to see it all through the eyes of an omnipresent being, he was able to see every plot, every stratagem being played and every trap being laid out, yet he could not speak. You could feel his pain by reading through the chapters dedicated to him.
    I have to give a special thanks to Skrubasauras who did an amazing job with bringing this story to life with his narration. He has been one of the main voice actors for the channel for a couple of years now and beyond his talent, Skrubs's professionalism and dedication to his craft have made every collaboration an absolute pleasure. His contribution to our channel has been invaluable, and it's safe to say that our projects wouldn't be the same without him.
    I want to extend a heartfelt invitation to you to become an even closer part of the channel. By supporting us on Patreon, you gain access to exclusive behind-the-scenes content, Early-Access to full finished videos, your name in the credits, access to our Discord server, the opportunity to have a say in future video topics, plus you help us by covering the costs associated with making more episodes around the lore of Warhammer 40k and Warhammer Fantasy (music, narrations, commissioned artworks, etc). Thank you for considering supporting us, and a huge thank you to those who already have. Your generosity is what keeps this channel thriving.
    Lastly, as I stated earlier, I highly recommend you read the books for yourself for getting the complete story and all the details, I recommend reading the Siege of Terra Books, specifically the three volumes of “The End & the Death” if you want to read the conclusion of the series and the full details of the final confrontation between Horus and the Emperor.

    No matter how many times I read it I just can’t get over how bad the fight between Horus and Big E was concluded. A literal Deus Ex Machina delivered by a plot device. And before you give me the classic “you’re just mad because you didn’t get the ending you wanted” schtick let’s review the original ending
    Horus is not stronger than the emperor but because of the grief of having to face his own son in battle after just seeing his other son horrifically butchered, Big E is on the back foot and beaten. Horus breaks the emperor, uses the powers of the chaos gods to mutilated him and is about to bring down the hammer. Suddenly from the darkness a lone guardsman steps forward holding a lazrifle. Not an Astartes, not a custodes, not a primarch a mere ordinary guardsman with a Lasgun. This mere mortal sees his emperor down and dying, sees the beast that did it, knows he has no chance against this creature and yet he stands his ground and fires his weapon in one last ditch effort to save his lord. Horus, with just a look, flays the brave guardsman alive for daring to interfere. This sadistic act against a nonthreat for no reason beyond the fact that he had the power to do it, galvanized the emperor. He realized he must push aside his love for Horus and unleash his power to obliterate the chaos gods avatar. The emperor unmakes Horus and in that briefest of seconds, Horus receives clarity and truly recognizes the crimes he’s committed. They lock eyes but no words are spoken between them as the emperor destroys Horus in both body and soul.
    See how epic that was. How satisfying that was and how organic it all felt? Notice how there’s no contrived time travel shit or magic weapon or stupid cliche where the villain is the ultimate super duper unstoppable mega super saiyan gaggilion god character that’s beaten by a trick? It’s just a tragic story of a father forced to deal with his wayward son and sacrifice him for the sin of his failures as a father. The heretics of a lowly mortal man reminding the emperor of why humans are worth the sacrifice and why Horus cannot be saved finalizing the emperors decision has actual weight.
    But no the canon ending is. Horus became a super saiyan 9 billion, and the emperor couldn’t beat him because shit up he just can’t (despite the fact that both he and Malcador know how to unmake the primarchs as it was specifically mentioned by Malcador himself to Horus). Horus then has a moment of stupid and talks to Ghost Lokan and gives up the powers (and for some stupid reason the chaos gods don’t give him the power to see through a trick by the emperor). The door to the ether shits out Ol P for him to say “Dude you should totally kill this dude because he’s like evil n stuff. Here’s a magic knife that didn’t kill Horus before but will totally do it now because shut up it just will. Imma go shoot lasers at him. Peace”. And then the emperor stabs Horus and they have a sappy “I love you pa. Gee willikers i sure am sorry bout all this” “I love you too boy. I’ll see you up in heaven son.”
    I’m sorry but this ending was absolute trash. Nothing against Dan Abbott or you. He’s a good writer and you gave good life to the narrative with your voice. But neither of you guys could possibly make this abortion of an ending work. It’s sappy, contrived, and very obviously written to “subvert our expectations” when it didn’t need to and only contradicts the entire nature of Warhammer 40k’s grim and dark setting by having this DnD style ending. It’s supposed to be Game of Thrones in space (seasons 1-4) not Game of Thrones season Eight finale and the fact that there are life long fans that cheered for this ending genuinely makes me wonder if maybe they’ve been sniffing model paint too long.
    Nothing against you dude. I salute your talent as a narrator and enjoyed everything up to that ending but that’s hardly your fault not Dan Abbots fault (in my opinion). If I had to blame anyone for that terrible ending it would have to be the marketing board who are the same type of numbskulls that gave us Kaldo Drago, Primaris Marines, and female custodes (because in 10,000 years nobody noticed a custodes with tits I guess 🤦🏻). The original ending was heartbreaking and beautiful. This ending is just………🤦🏻

      Nah I have to comment twice, that ending is beautiful and it shows the emperor's personality through and through. The act of Horus brutally killing someone so weak in comparison to himself is inexcusably pathetic to a warrior as proud as the emperor, shining light on his understanding as a protector and guide for humanity. The retcon is HERESY

    • @OverLordRiper
      @OverLordRiper 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      You are right, the only things I like about the new ending are 1) The Emperor could have EASILY beaten Horus and the chaos gods but doing so would have required him to become The Dark King and consume humanity Slaanesh style. But instead he chose to face them as a man, and own up to the mistakes he made that brought him to that point rather than take the easy, safe way out. I think that's very poetic in its own right. And 2) When you delve into how the fight is built up and Abnett's overall characterization of Big E throughout the books, you realize that there was never any question about the victor of their duel. Big E planned everything from the start, up to and including using Loken to weaken Horus. Which is why he brought him. That Horus couldn't see through the glamour is a testament to The Emperor's skill with warpcraft, he tricked the gods on molech and then did it again here. Abnett likes writing him as a ''clever magician'', less powerful that some people believe but more than most realize. But yeah, I agree, the old lore is iconic for a reason, i'm just trying to salvage something from the new one.

      @@OverLordRiper I understand. I hold no grudge over someone liking something I don’t and I’ll be the first to admit there’s usually something to scavenge from even the worst is stories. (Hell the Star Wars prequels share a parallel storyline to Citizen Kane and show Vaders rise and fall as the classic rise from nothing and fall to corruption due to too much power gained too quickly with too little discipline installed at the right age leading to tragedy.). My issue solely resides in the modern trope of subversive storytelling which permeates the entertainment industry where we can’t just have the story follow the simple arc but has to take a hard turn and “subvert our expectations” ala The Last Jedi, Game of Thrones, and so on. This is a postmodernist deconstruction of story craft and it’s so ubiquitous at this point I almost expect the newest story or movie to be a blank page of black screen with the word Story scrolled across in bold print before showing a follow up of several pictures of the director/author giving the finger to the camera before the film/book ends with another blank screen/page with the word “Fin” scrolled in crayon on it.
      TL;DR The issue I have is with the postmodernist wave of subversive storytelling that ruined an already brilliant tale that paid homage to Arthurian mythology and gave the setting its tragic and grim tone we all fell in love with.

    There was no battle between Sanguinius and Horus.
    There was horus letting Sanguinius hit hiim for a while as he mused on his own thoughts allowing Sanguinius to think he was capable of hurting Horus.
    He never was able to hurt him.
    Until Horus got bored and beat the breaks off Sanguinius like he was nothing and crushed him like a bug.
    It literally was never a fight.
    It could be argued that the same was true of Horus and the Emporer. With 1 exception.
    Garvial loken convinved Horus to give up the power of Chaos to prove he was not a slave to Chaos.
    In that instant... There was a fight. Just Horus (unbuffed by Chaos)... versus the emporer and it lasted about 15 secs.
    Sanguinius' Purpose in going to face Horus was to do something nobody else could do... To break through Horus' Chaos manipulation and allow him to feel real human feelings again.
    Even as he beat him like a ragdoll... Horus loved Sanguinius like he loved no other brother. This confused and stalled Horus. Each of them served a crucial purpose of distraction and stalling for time so that John and Ole could get where they need to be at the exact moment they needed to be there.
    Ps... for those who havent clicked it yet...
    None of this was the Emporers Plan.
    It was Malcadors one of malcadors' last secret plans
    Which is why it was so successful. At no point did the Emporer have any clue how he was going to defeat Horus. in his mind he knew he could not. He expected to die.

      we have one issue with it. The case of Magnus. Depending on HOW MUCH of Horus soul is gone, it may be fatal for him. In the Novel Crimson King we learn that after the battle of Prospero and his duel with Leman, that his soul has been splintered...and that he lost too much of himself. This in turn is affecting his body. He is dyhing and slowly becoming insane. It is only thanks to Ahriman that they recovered MOST of his soul shards and reunite them with him, and later on Magnus hiimself gathering some more. Still incomplete but now enough to survive, and later he ascends fully to demon prince which makes the soul issue irrelevant.
      However, if Horus would somehow come back, he would be missing a chunk of his soul. If that portion is too large, it may drive him insane anyway again or once more lead him to a slow death.

    • @TheBookofChoyer
      @TheBookofChoyer  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      No. It was stated in the book that not even the Empero had a chance against the monster that Horus had become by that point. The Warmaster was carrying the full essence/power of Chaos at that point. Sanguinius never stood a chance. The Emperor was only (barely) able to do what he did because he tricked Horus into letting go of that power momentarily. Horus was a victim of his own weakness and was ultimately defeated because of that and not because he was overpowered by the might of the Emperor.

    The authors failed us, they had one job: tell us how it happened, we new what happened it was established, but they decided to change it, to take away of the magesty of the Emperor.
    i stopped reading the Horus heresy 5 years ago and i did well to stop this is a shame.

    • @TheBookofChoyer
      @TheBookofChoyer  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I think the majesty of the Emperor is (in part) Him being shrouded in mystery. Always seeing His actions from an outsider's perspective but never getting the full view of what exactly He is thinking. Some things are indeed left unsaid, but I personally think it's for the better. Of course that's only my opinion but that's the beautify of it, to have different perspectives on how things could/should be.
      One thing that I think needs to be clarified, now that you mention it, is that the author had the job of writing the end of the Horus Heresy but with the guideline coming from GW themselves that some things must remain in mystery, not giving away too much of how things happened exactly. This was stated by the author himself in the afterword.

      First of all all your videos are top quality, i enjoy them every time .
      I'm not talking about not revealing everything i'm talking about changing the lore turning it upside down:
      Originally the confrontation between The Emperor and Horus was supposed to happen after the Empeor had spent a decade fending off the warp from Terra seated on the Golden throne (now Vulkan comes with a device the give the Emperor is full power back)
      Sanguinius was supose to have pierced Horus's arrmour with his blade before dying (now his death is meaningles).
      The reason why the Emperor was supposed to struggle against Horus was that he was exausted and that he was holding back in the desilusion that Horus could be brought back until witnessing the monster that Horus have trully become after he killed the Guardsman (now it is Horus that holds back stealing the ultimate victory form the Emperor, rendering the Emperor's saccrifice dul)
      Claiming that the directives are coming from GW is not a good argument, it is GW that butchured Warhammer Fantasy Battle, it is GW that created the Primaris Marines regardless of the lore inconsitencies (Black Templars working with Eldar XD) only to sell SM armies a second time.
      GW of today is not the same GW that created the IP they don't have the love for it and we, the fans must stay vigilent so our beloved universes stay coherent and true to themselves.
      Sorry for the gramatical mistakes i'm not fluent in English.

    • @TheBookofChoyer
      @TheBookofChoyer  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@bliblivion Ahh I couldn't comment much about that then because I thought that those were theories. That the man that got in between Horus and the Emperor was indeed a guardsman or that Sanguinius had actually pierced Horus' plate and that allowed for the Emperor to deliver the killing blow. I had read those but never from an official source. If those were official then I guessed they retconned it. And yes you are right, saying that because GW mandates something doesn't mean it is necessarily a good thing, I never intended to imply that. I was just pointing out the fact that the author had a "restraint" or a condition to meet when writing the novel. Personally I liked it a lot, but I can understand why you and some other's don't. All good.

      There were already enough scenes of the emperor being majestic, Almost too majestic for a satire on fascism story, in plenty of good horus heresy books that you likely didnt read. This highlights the craftier side of the emperor more and the tragedy of 30k that leads to falsehoods of 40k better imo
      The only thing i agree with you on is the changing of ollanius pius as a person.

    • @bliblivion
      @bliblivion 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@khalduras784 40k was never a satire of fascism ... it is a setting with a lore and i have read every book of the Horus Heresy i did start a bit late in 2010 tho.
      the Imperium is not fascist it does not try to centralise power and base it's legitimacy in a glorius past excluding other in the 30k setting.
      you are unable to understand what you are talking about, a fascist Imperium would not let semi autonomus regime rull over their systèms, it would not allow the Mechanicum to exist.
      Plus the facdt that you aknowledge that the Emperor was writen differently (faithfull to the lore) in a lot of the first books show that the authors corrupeted the character of the Emperor to fit their new agenda.
