    Overall very happy with the Carbon X. I've just over 120 miles in them, which includes two marathons. I've ran well over 20 marathons, a few ultras, and full ironman, so I have a fair bit of running experience. Post marathon muscle soreness has been dramatically less with the Carbon X compared to all other shoes and the same training load, etc. Yes they felt firm, the first strides felt odd, but those sensations quickly disappear. My only quibble is that I feel the forefoot is a little wide, making my foot slip side to side slightly. On some runs I'm aware of it, on others not. One day I think I've discovered proper lacing tension then the next it seems wrong. It has created a hot spot, but through two marathons it never developed into a full-blown blister.

    Seth, I had an issue with rubbing on my Achilles in my first few runs in these, but then I figured out that I could get a good lockdown with much less pressure on the laces than I thought I needed. No more Achilles rubbing + solid lock-down = smooth as butter!

    Just ran the LV marathon in these and have used them on some of my long runs. They were great, even for me as a solid mid pack runner. I never had any issues with the heel collar or other hot spots with this shoe, for whatever that’s worth.

    After My first run in these shoes I was like "What? These are bricks!" I found the midsole very stiff compared to the plush ZoomX in the Nike Turbo and Vaporfly. They felt like the Zoomfly only stiffer with a steeper drop off in the forefoot. I was quite disappointed after reading some great positive reviews and paying over $200CA. Thankfully this dissipated quite a bit over about 25K and it actually feels pretty good now, or maybe just getting used to the feeling. I do like this shoe for speedwork now and have only taken it out for one 20K long run and actually felt pretty good as well. I would rate this as a good shoe and will give it a go on my next long run if you say that is where it shines. I have had no issues with the heel rubbing. I look forward to the Version 2 where they make it lighter.

  • @bijohn333
    @bijohn333 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I would just like to point out one thing. You said you didn't like how firm it felt so you added the spenco insert. The Carbon X is supposed to be a RACING SHOE so it's going to feel firm. It's not meant for 20+ mile long slower distances. There was a group of people that took these shoes when they first came out and started daily training in them and told everyone they're a trainer. This is not the case and not the purpose of this shoe. It's supposed to be firm.

    • @bijohn333

      The 40 Something runner if you're running fast for those distances then yes. Jim walmsley was running 5'40 miles when he broke the world record for the 50 mile distance. The shoe is meant to go fast, not slow

      @bijohn333 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 40 Something runner that would be a great choice! They have the same meta rocker feel but the glideride has a significantly higher cushion and the upper is a lot more plush and premium as well. It's designed to be more efficient for the longer, slower miles

    Seth, you ever run in your carbon plate shoes in the winter at all? I just wanted to ask have you found that you have to "warm up" the carbon fibre? Just wanted to check, because i was doing some 1 mile repeats at about 4 Celsius (sorry I live in England hehe) and oh my goodness, that first mile was gnarly on my feet, but after that it was back to "normal" bouncy and springy again. During the summer and autumn months did not notice this , but man the contrast was real obvious. (I was running in these shoes Hoka Carbon X)

    I also had the same issue on the right shoe as well at the start! I thought it was the socks I was wearing and while no show socks seems to make it worse (no issues in ankle socks) I think it is a fit issue due to the relaxed fit and possible my left and right foot having slight differences in volume - the material also feels kinder rough at the back of the collar. The Issue went away after a few runs but I think it was more my foot adapting.

    Carbon X is not going down in price because mens sizes are sold out everywhere and they haven't launched new colorways recently. However, some womens sizes might end up in sale.
    Btw, which one is better in your opinion for long runs, the Carbon X or the Pegasus Turbo? I haven't run in my Carbon X at all because there was something wrong in the sizing. I think they put the wrong label on those shoes. They are smaller than what they should be. So that pair has been sitting in the shoe box for the past 5 months.

    Crikey red alert for me if getting some Achilles rubbing as I have just got over best part of two poor running years due to Achilles issues which I figured where at least partly due to poor fitting shoes. That said if you put an insert (albeit thin) into the shoe is that making it tighter than it might otherwise have been and contributing to the issue?

Hard to say if it really helped because my endurance improved for sure but legs weren't as tired and the shoes felt good over the whole race. It's a wider shoe than the Nikes so I feel like it's a more stable ride.

    I have a pair of the Carbon X and I find that I get very bad heat spots on the ball of my feet, expressly on the out side of my feet (so bad that my feet have black spots after training for a couple of days). Does anyone else get this?

    @Seth James DeMoor, which cheaper alternative for a better running experience would you recommend for long runs? If you had to pick THE ones that you like most for your long runs (excluded Nike Next % :D)

      Try find a pair of zoom fly fk's real cheap. Otherwise epic react fk 2's for mellow long runs

      I was in the same situation as you 6 months back, and I avoided the 4% and next% due to cost/principle. But in the end I wasted more money trying different shoes including the Carbon X (it's OK but gives me pain in the ankle joint). The reason the 4%/next% works so well is because of the incredibly soft bouncy cushion, but because of the plate they are not mushy and perform well at pace. There is no shoe like it. Black Friday coming soon so try to find a good deal on the 4% or next%

      I am still not decided to spend so much but I am have to admit you started convincing me with the fact that you spent more at the end trying several shoes.. so I am may take a look at them on this Friday 😬 Thanks for your answer! Have a nice day. Cheers

    Would this be a good shoe for someone with big toe pain? I think I got carried away running in Fivefingers too much too soon. I think I need a stiff sole and forefoot rocker.
    Thanks!

      Maybe the Topo Athletic Magnifly 2 or 3? They are 0 mm drop (like any minimalist shoe) and have a stiff sole and a nice rocker (similar to Clifton 5). I like my pair :)

      @@adimperial I've had toe pain, that I think was caused from running too hard, too much in 10 mm drop shoes (NB1400v6 and Peg 36). Went back to old Kinvara 9s helped. But also wanted to try a pair of 0 mm drop for more natural running.

      I spoke to my local running store owner, who just got back from the World Championships (Marathon). He is not sponsored by a shoe company so can run in anything he likes. He ran in the Next%, rather than the CarbonX for that reason. He said they felt like bricks compared to the Nike. If Hoka want to compete they need to do something about the weight and the foam. I ended up buying the Nikes for my son, even though the Hokas were considerably cheaper.

    • @xfitgirl77

      Yea. I went with the Next % as well, for this very reason. Uncharacteristically firm for a Hoka.
