    What Jacob Coopland's mom said was 100% true. She was scared of him staying in Florida and UF had a reputation of allowing gang violence under Urban. She wanted him to go to Bama to be under a strict coach. And if you look it up Jacob got into trouble at UF, it just got swept under the rug. So the mom was right.

      I'm in 100% agreement on what Copeland's mom said, but her action of walking out on her own son's special moment was too much. It would've been better if they handled that matter after the ceremony and out of the public eye.

      Agreed. I kind of felt bad for Justin fuente. You don't want to replace a legend, and beamer certainly was a legend. To be open, I'm a Memphis fan and we are eternally grateful for what he did for our program. This is not like when calipari left for Kentucky and we hated him. We wanted him to do well at Virginia tech. What I never understood was how Memphis got better and Virginia tech got worse with the fan base and the money and the history Va Tech had. I think it was fair to say that Memphis would have beaten Virginia Tech every year except maybe one after he left, as we were routinely ranked in the top 25 and even had a Cotton Bowl appearance. Good luck to coach fuente wherever he goes next

    My favorite recruiting story is when Woody Hayes went up to Michigan to visit a recruit, and on his way back the car was running low on gas. He refused to fill it back up while in Michigan because the tax money on the gas would indirectly support U of M. Supposedly the car ran completely out of gas before he got back to Ohio, so he had his assistant push it the rest of the way.
    I don't know if that really happened or not; but knowing how Woody was, I could see it

    • @TrinityShoji
      @TrinityShoji 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      It has been said that if the bus broke down while in the state of Michigan, Woody would have the team push the bus(es) over the state border rather than refilling it.
      Because that fraction of a fraction of a cent that U of M gets from public spending and gas taxes would be supporting U of M.

    Not a recruiting story, per say, but another great story about Beamer:
    After the shooting that took place at Virginia Tech in 2007 that killed 32 students and faculty, Beamer was one of the first people from the school to visit the survivors in the hospital. It's been documented that it would take him as much as 30 to 45 minutes to compose himself between the hospital rooms before he would enter another to try and console the victims and their families, because in many cases, he was just as distraught as they were. If you watch the closing segment from the Virginia Tech memorial program (Nikki Giovanni's We Are Virginia Tech speech) at one point, the camera cuts to Frank and his wife sitting crying listening to the speech.
    They really don't make coaches like Beamer and Bill Snyder anymore.

    • @Keyser___Soze
      @Keyser___Soze 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@regurgitatedapplez7388 “successful” by college athletic standards doesnt really mean sh*t. Coach Calipari is one of the worst coaches in the country but according to his resumé you would call him successful but thats only because he ends up getting the best players in the country to play on his team. With all of these too teams like Alabama, you could put 100 different coaches coaching those same players and still end up with the same record as Saban, maybe even better. Saban might be a bad example but you get what I’m saying. If you can get 20 of the top 50 players in the country on your team while other teams get 1 player in the top 50 players in the country, its not exactly being a great coach is why your “successful”. College sports is joke in that way. If you actually compared how good of a coach Calipari is compared to some coaches who have barely a .500 winning percentage. You would think Calipari is the way better coach and thats why he “successful” when in actuality those .500 coaches are 10 times better of a coach he is. This is why Calipari gets knocked out by a 15 seed as a 2 seed, its why he loses the crucial games, because hes such a bad coach that even with some of the best players he still cant win. And when he does win its because his players dod everything for him. His championship team I believe he had his whole starting 5 go in the NBA 1st round (never been done), he had like 2 or 3 straight NBA rookies of year on his team in college (Derrick Rose, Tyreke Evans). When he did coach in the NBA he was garbage and lasted like 1 year because that was more of even playing field. Thats why you see these “great college coaches” try to go to the pro league and get eaten alive.
      Winning percentage for a coach doesnt mean sh*t for how good you are as a coach in all the major college sports.

      I always thought it was “peaked” or “peaks” like it heightened my interest, it was the top of my interest, high point top of mountain in my interest level. It almost still works for the definition of “peak”. This is the one word that people probably mess up that still almost works with the wrong word being used. Thanks for correcting that so now I know.
      Side note, I dont know why people get so angry when someone corrects them. Why would you want to continue to keep doing it wrong? Most people get so mad and defensive especially when they correct their spelling or grammar. I’ve never understood that. You have to be extremely insecure, sensitive and unintelligent to get mad when someone helps you to correct yourself so you dont continue to make the same mistake.

    As a Georgia fan the best college football recruiting story of all time is the Bear Bryant and the restaurant story that’s an amazing story 💯

    • @joelee4605
      @joelee4605 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      At a Touchdown Club meeting many years before his death, Coach Paul "Bear" Bryant told the following story:
      "I had just been named the new head coach at Alabama and was off in my old car down in South Alabama recruiting a prospect who was supposed to have been a pretty good player and I was havin' trouble finding the place. Getting hungry I spied an old cinder block building with a small sign out front that simply said "Restaurant."
      "I pull up, go in and every head in the place turns to stare at me. Seems I'm the only white fella in the place. But the food smelled good so I skip a table and go up to a cement bar and sit. A big ole man in a tee shirt and cap comes over and says, "What do you need?" I told him I needed lunch and what did they have today? He says, "You probably won't like it here, today we're having chitlins, collared greens and black eyed peas with cornbread. I'll bet you don't even know what chitlins are, do you?" I looked him square in the eye and said, "I'm from Arkansas, I've probably eaten a mile of them. Sounds like I'm in the right place." They all smiled as he left to serve me up a big plate. When he comes back he says, "You ain't from around here then?"
      "I explain I'm the new football coach up in Tuscaloosa at the University and I'm here to find whatever that boy's name was and he says, yeah I've heard of him, he's supposed to be pretty good. And he gives me directions to the school so I can meet him and his coach. As I'm paying up to leave, I remember my manners and leave a tip, not too big to be flashy, but a good one and he told me lunch was on him, but I told him for a lunch that good, I felt I should pay.
      The big man asked me if I had a photograph or something he could hang up to show I'd been there. I was so new that I didn't have any yet. It really wasn't that big a thing back then to be asked for, but I took a napkin and wrote his name and address on it and told him I'd get him one and shook his hand and left."
      "I met the kid I was lookin' for later that afternoon and I don't remember his name, but do remember I didn't think much of him when I met him. I had wasted a day, or so I thought.
      When I got back to Tuscaloosa late that night, I took that napkin from my shirt pocket and put it under my keys so I wouldn't forget it. Back then I was excited that anybody would want a picture of me. The next day we found a picture and I wrote on it, "Thanks for the best lunch I've ever had."
      "Now let's go a whole buncha years down the road. Now we have black players at Alabama and I'm back down in that part of the country scouting an offensive lineman we sure needed. Y'all remember, (and I forget the name, but it's not important to the story), well anyway, he's got two friends going to Auburn and he tells me he's got his heart set on Auburn too, so I leave empty handed and go on see some others while I'm down there."
      "Two days later, I'm in my office in Tuscaloosa and the phone rings and it's this kid who just turned me down, and he says, "Coach, do you still want me at Alabama?" And I said, "Yes I sure do." And he says OK, he'll come. And I say, "Well son, what changed your mind?" And he said, "When my grandpa found out that I had a chance to play for you and said no, he pitched a fit and told me I wasn't going nowhere but Alabama, and wasn't playing for nobody but you. He thinks a lot of you and has ever since y'all met." Well, I didn't know his granddad from Adam's house cat so I asked him who his granddaddy was and he said, "You probably don't remember him, but you ate in his restaurant your first year at Alabama and you sent him a picture that he's had hung in that place ever since. That picture's his pride and joy and he still tells everybody about the day that Bear Bryant came in and had chitlins with him."

    Dickerson talking about his recruitment is wild. Like a&m giving him a trans am and I think them or Texas offering them a brief case with 500K in it. He said U of Texas recruit told him it was his duty to sign with them because it was a state school and he would never get a job in the state of Texas if he didn’t. He signed with SMU partly because the coach at the time was a white man comfortable in a black household. And he said he was offered money. But it didn’t scratch what the other school offered.

    I remember Disneys Smart Guy doing an episode about this. A big school mistakenly recruited marcus Henderson from peidmont high in Washington DC when they wanted to recruit marcus from piedmont in Washington state. They got a bunch of free gear and ultimately a sports car.

    Coach O did it wrong. State prisons legally cannot transfer custody of inmates from state to state, only federal prisons can. He should have scheduled a free, paid for flight for AP weekly/monthly, although I’m not sure if that’s violating NCAA rules

    AFL football (it's not rugby) in my country Australia there's some great Aboriginal recruiting stories! Traveling out to the middle of nowhere in outback Australia to find the next Superstar of the game!.. it's about 2% of all Australian's are indigenous Aboriginal but AFL football it's about 12% and man are they unbelievable!!! A lot play In the desert playing with bare feet!!!.. Lance Franklin, Cyril Rioli, Eddie Betts just to name a few!.. watch their highlight's! I love NFL but AFL is Awesome as well! Get into it NFL fan's!!!

    I don’t think Jacob Copeland’s mother was justified in what she did. I think she was absolutely justified in how she felt, especially her concern for her son’s well being, but you gotta stay up there and support your son. She shoulda waited til after and made her voice heard in private, but as it happened she basically took attention away from her son on a day that was supposed to be his.
