Those hits in the intro were legit criminal....you're trying to stop them from moving the ball, not break their necks or give them concussions. Plays like that are absolutely lead to the NFL becoming what it is today where sneezing within 5 yards of a QB is roughing the passer.
I think the perfect rule set for offense and defense were the 90s to the mid-2000's. A team with a dominant offense / average defense was just as likely to win as a team with a dominant defense / average offense. Special teams were also a big deal then, as statistically, special teams' field position battles then were a lot more crucial. Every team in the NFL played like that back then including the Patriots the team Stingley played for. If anybody was dirty even at the standards of the day, It was Atkinson. It was a different game back then and the play that ruined Stingley's life wasn't even called a penalty and wasn't a cheap shot at all, just a WR hung out to dry by a backup QB in a preseason game. Tatum wasn't really a bad guy at all and was pretty freaked out by the outcome of the play. The NFL didn't change much as far as the rules are concerned at all the only thing they did was change the contact on WRs to within 5yds and that was only because teams were having problems moving the ball and scoring was down not because of player safety. It wasn't until well after the 2000s that they really started cutting down on kill shots by DBs go watch some film on the Bears defenses from the 80s or the 90s Eagle DBs or the 2000s Patriot DBs.
