My older asian parents were interested after hearing all the buzz and so after much hesitation and not wanting to know if they knew what butt-plugs were, I sat down with them to watch it. They were expecting some couching tiger hidden dragon-esque movie with Michelle Yeoh. They thought the film was pointless, had a boring story and all the flashy and crazy stuff was just for show.
I actually knew this was going to be the outcome since I honestly couldn't see them being able to wrap their heads around a film like this, nor would they relate to the generational trauma focused relationship that resonates more with a 'younger' audience.
ps. and forget tryna explain to them the concept of nihilism vs absurdism 😩

okay wait, there's a quote from a review of this movie that I keep on my phone just because it's the closest I've ever found to an actual summary that accurately describes the movie but is also spoiler free:
"And at first, it seems like a somewhat familiar generational-clash indie movie - tolerance, acceptance, immigration, etc. And then the wheels start coming off. More and more psychedelic things start happening, and there comes a point where you're just like: _Wait, this movie is doing something similar to a lot of things I've seen, but I've always never seen anything like this before._
It goes to places of absurdity and extremity, but also sweetness and sentimentality and darkness. It's this vortex that draws you in, swirls you around, and spits you at the end to say: "That was fvcking awesome." -Spencer Kornhaber, The Atlantic

This movie was such a highlight and acknowledgment of the Asian American and immigrant experience. Not just that, but also the Asian queer representation was good. I know some people didn’t like it because it was so overstimulating, but it truly was a love letter and voice by and for our community. Not just that, but it managed to bring something totally new and experimental to cinema. On the surface, the plot may seem messy and confusing, but upon breaking it down and simplifying the themes and ideas, it truly is a masterpiece. Everything is so well connected and supported. I really really love and appreciate this film. Spectacular on every level.

If it was a film about a Polish family or if this exact film had been done in China, nobody would have cared. Hollywood is extremely biased.
Average film with average execution, nothing else. Some good themes at the end, under average action film for over half the movie, with a joke per minute.

I’ve been wanting them to talk about EEAAO for a long time but, figured it wouldn’t happen seeing how the show is about guilty pleasures. I was super excited seeing the episode title and thought they may have just made an exception for this but, was pretty quickly disappointed to know it was just a brief discussion of each Oscar nomination for best picture. There were some great movies in 2022 but EEAAO was on a different level, truly a movie that I think ppl will be talking about for years to come. I would have really enjoyed Zach, Garrick, Kelsey and Miles just talking about this movie, their thoughts and perspectives, things they saw or heard that affected them, the performances of the actors, the screenplay, the writing of the movie. I would have really enjoyed just a deeper discussion about the movie, even if it isn’t a super funny episode. Def would have been down to cry and get introspective w y’all.

It’s a movie about the importance, and sheer fragility, of democracy. A courtroom drama were 9 dictators were prosecuted for their crimes against our people. In Pedro Pascal’s words: ‘Mothers went to the streets to scream on behalf of their children disappeared to a bloody military regime. No other country in the world at that time had taken on their genocidal leaders to expose their crimes and demand justice.’

Everyone laughing, crying and just really interacting with the whole movie. It is such an experience. Especially during the rock scene when everyone goes quiet and you can hear the sniffles and awwws in the crowd. Those were just rocks with text that moved the hearts of this many people. My partner and I saw EEAAO in a theater in the middle of the week for a matinee with the only other viewer being an old lady who didn’t quite understand it when we asked her what she thought about it afterward. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a movie and immediately needed to connect with the other people who saw it to check that they also had a transcendental experience. So much of what I consume lately is fandom based. It was refreshing to go into it with zero expectations and come out feeling so fulfilled. It was one of two movies we saw in theaters through the entirety of the pandemic. The other was Shang Chi because it was in that pocket of time where we thought the worst of Covid was behind us. Nobody was talking about EEAAO when we saw it but when we did we said to ourselves this is what cinema is supposed to be about. And that was before we knew any of what went into making it. It deserves more than Oscars. If they don’t win then it’s just further proof that the academy doesn’t have any true grasp of what makes a good movie anymore.

this movie made me cry at over 5 separate scenes and I never ugly sobbed while laughing SO hard in my entire life tbh. And the movie doesn't exactly correlate to me. But it hit home a bit with a infuriating and unfair father figure in place of Evelyn. And the nihilism of Joy and the implications of depression and suicide hit so close and made me break down over and over. I fucking started sobbing so hard as soon as the bagel was first revealed, that 'Nothing... Matters' from Jobu made me break down and crumple in relatability.

This is a nonsense argument. If anything, stunts have become much more safer compared to the shit Jackie Chan used to do. Stunt coordinators already do their best to be innovative and creative and create something new. Awards are just about recognition. Most people in the industry don't do what they do for the sake of awards, but for the love of the craft.

I don't think is necessarily a generational thing. I think it's a "I'm not willing to make myself vulnerable enough to enjoy something so deep that speaks to my soul because after 60 years of dodging therapy (because it's for crazy people), I wouldn't be able to deal with all the feels" thing.

Pretty disappointed you guys didn’t watch The Whale with the amount of love you each expressed for Brendon Fraser during the Mummy episode. I get the issues with the fat suit but for Brendon Fraser I’ll support everything lol he was phenomenal.

Speaking of the idea of The Daniels doing an adaptation of a work:
if there was anyone ever that I would trust to do a satisfying film adaptation of Kurt Vonnegut's written work, it's The Daniels.
They understand how absurd humour can be a potent vehicle for emotional catharsis, and have shown they already nail the use of connecting themes in non-linear story telling. They're masters of montage and the picaresque style.
Imagine Slaughterhouse 5 (The Children's Crusade) with The Daniels style.
I'm going feral just thinking about it

The way they talk about Elvis doing a "black thing" in a room full of black people reminds me of when Tracy Turnblad in Hairspray dancing in that classroom full of black people and how she suddenly became "cool" because she was a white person dancing

    Fun Facts
    * Initially, the directors offered Jackie Chan (68) the lead role, which he turned down.
    * Subsequently, the directors cast Michelle Yeoh (60) and Ke Huy Quan (51) and gender-swapped the story.
    * The mother-daughter dynamic is more compelling than the father-daughter conflict or father-son conflict.
    My Review
    * Directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, Everything Everywhere All at Once is a movie about nothing. More precisely, nothing matters.
    * At first, I was not too fond of the movie. The “over-the-top” humor was too much for my sensibility. On the surface, it is a tired story about a dysfunctional multi-generational Chinese family in America. Underneath, it is about “nihilism” across the multiverse.
    * I notice more on each rewatch: (1) the set design, (2) the symbolism of circles everywhere, (3) the range of acting, and (4) the fight choreography. I realize that the over-the-top humor was intended to shock the viewers out of complacency and to think “outside the box.”
    * Michelle Yeoh, the lead actress, gave the performance of her life. Jamie Lee Curtis, a supporting actress, was hilarious. Stephanie Hsu, a supporting actress, gave a breakout performance. Ke Huy Quan, a supporting actor, gave an award-winning performance. Ke was the 12-year-old Chinese boy in Indiana Jones 2 but quit acting to be a stunt coordinator.
    * Everything Everywhere All at Once led all 2022 films with 11 Oscar nominations.

As much as I think EEAAO is a worthy Best Picture winner, I still feel it would have been better as a TV show. It does have pacing issues that might have been easier to fix with time and an episodic nature.
Also, heck yeah! Both O'Connells have an Oscar now.

Whiplash was for me one the best if the best movie ever, now he is ex-aequo with EEAO. So happy this film exist, it really made my life better. PS : I so much hope that the daniels will stay as kind and genuine are they were before oscars, it's the triumph of intelligence and kidness over hollywood greed.
Ps 2 : i just learnt that they ve done " turn down for what clip", how can i love them more ?

I hate to put this out there but there are very few POC not rooting for EEAAO. It's different. It's intersectional. It's really rare in the sense that it focuses on a minority group and it gives them hope. Like yeah we get it, Tár was a great stitch of stories you find on the internet of problematic white people and it was artful in several ways but it just was not all of that. I, with a lot of my nonwhite friends, fail to see how it was all that original. All Quiet on the Western Front would have dominated if EEAAO was not in contention this year.
