As a kid with a Hispanic dad and white mom with red hair, this film was the only time I ever saw myself on screen. My younger brother went as Carmen and Juni for multiple Halloweens. It’s still one of my favorite films.

My dad is also Hispanic and my mom is white but we don't have red hair. But I still saw my family resembled for the first time in this movie and felt so understood

That is the exact same family dynamic as my childhood friend! I’m glad so many people can feel represented in this film ❤
the moustache thing is so real. My dad had a moustache my entire life, then one summer I went to girl guide camp for a week and he shaved his stache when his work raised a certain amount of money for cancer research. I literally didn’t recognize him when he came to pick me up; he had to walk up to me and go “it’s me, your father.”
My dad tells this story of when my older sister was a toddler, and he had to shave the beard he had had for her whole life.
She shaved it with her in the bathroom, and did the whole thing with her with a popsicle stick as well. She left the bathroom before he did (but after the beard was off), and when he walked out into the living room my sister had an absolute meltdown cause she didn’t think it was dad.
I remember walking out of the theater after seeing this movie and being PHYSICALLY PAINED that my mother was not a spy
I have to add for Latine viewers this movie meant so much to us. ESPECIALLY seeing this as kids. Representation matters! ❤️❤️
I love these movies so much. I just love the fact that when Robert Rodriguez made them, it was fully for his kids. Like he doesn’t make movies to sell toys, he made movies for kids to love and enjoy. The spy kids franchise, shark boy and lava girl, and the one i never see anyone talking about but that i had on loop in my house, shorts, where his actual son was in, these movies were absolutely my everything. And i have all the dvds still. Like there are just certain things from them engraved in my brain for ever that have shaped me. Robert Rodriguez is truly a marvel

This wasn't one of our repeats, but if we caught it while channel flipping, my brother and I would automatically just stop on it and finish it.
He is such a versatile and visionary filmmaker. It takes a real talent to be able to make movies for kids AND movies that are VERY MUCH NOT for kids, but they feel like the same universe always. He's done a great job of creating a universe with something for everyone, and I also love that some of the ideas came from his kids themselves. It must've been so cool as a kid to see their dad bring their ideas and dreams to life!
I've never even heard of Shorts and I'm upset about it. It's not available to stream anywhere so I'm probably gonna have to buy it now.
The fact that this wasn’t covered before is shocking. However, better late than never.
My favourite fact about this is that Meghan Trainor and Daryl Sabara have had intense discussions about ‘Spy Kids’
Daryl and Meghan are really really cute, and so is their baby Riley. I love that Daryl and Alexa are still so close as adults. She married Carlos from Big Time Rush and their babies are so cute too, and just imagining their Spy Kids as Adults double dates makes my heart so happy.

The best film ever made. Period. You watch this film and you can tell everyone was having fun and actually put their all into it despite it being a kids movie. It has so much heart. Also, how can you guys forget Floop's iconic line: "I snap my fingers... and my fingers snap you". Quality!

Have you ever seen the pic of them leaving an adult toy store? He has on toe shoes!! But I love their attitude about the public's reaction to that picture, because they're able to laugh at it and themselves.

For the OSS it's Organization of Super Spies and Brie Larson is NOT a nepo baby, she has just been climbing the Hollywood ladder with talent and sheer will. I love her so much

Robert Rodriquez has a certain aesthetic and personality in all his movies that is recognizable in a way that you know all his movies are from him, not unlike Baz Luhrman or Tarantino and I love it. Love all of his movies. From Dusk till Dawn should be another episode especially since Garrick and Kelsey have never seen it.
bro when i tell you this movie made my little mexican heart SO happy when i was a kid 😭😭 honestly like my family would rewatch all the movies all the time and each time i was just genuinely filled with joy and it probably played a really big role in who i wanted to be

Alexa Vega goes by Alexa PenaVega now. She’s married to Carlos PenaVega (about 10 years) who’s in Big Time Rush and they have done movies and written books together. Carlos and Alexa have three adorable children 😊
Their kids really are just so so so cute! And I love their friendship with Daryl and Meghan, you can tell they're genuinely close and have a special bond.

As an anime fan basically my whole life, I need Garrick to watch some Satoshi Kon films if he wants to see some real masterclasses of story telling. Perfect Blue and Tokyo Godfathers particularly, but Paprika and Millennium Actress as well. I implore you, Garrick.
As a big Marvel nerd with a younger brother who's been an anime nerd for a few years, I totally agree with you Zach about anime. I haven't gotten into it, but just the pure wealth of material would be very lucrative.

I’m gonna throw my suggestion in the ring for best starter anime, Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood. It’s got pretty much all the appeals that Naruto has, at just a fraction of the overall length.
This is great and now I definitely need to hear you talk about the second one too! Both are honestly iconic
The convo topics in this episode reminded me of three movies that would be amazing for this show:
1. Spy (with Melissa McCarthy)
2. Galaxy Quest (Tony Shaloub)
3. Eurovision (Rachel McAdams)
I loved the tech in this movie, especially the big mac scene. Things like mr magoriums wonder imporium,james and the giant peach,spy kids,shark boy and lava girl,and jim carrey's grinch were my childhood. Movies used to actually use props to build the environment and i miss that.
I'm a 4th grade teacher and Spy Kids has become one of my favorite movies to show for Fun Friday time. Usually 2 students max have seen it (and have to promise to not spoil it). Even though the title tells it all, they almost forget as the movie starts, a few start getting impatient for something to happen. Then when the parents log into their spy network they're just 😮 and by the time the red alert goes off they're hooked. It's so fun seeing their reactions for the rest of the movie and they always get annoyed when Fun Friday ends and we need to go to lunch.
This movie is responsible for my irrational fear of warts. I was so scared of getting warts as a kid and it’s probably why I’m not comfortable around frogs
I still say to this day, unironically, Spy Kids is the best trilogy ever made.

I remember watching Spy Kids 3 and absolutely SCREAMING when Elijah Wood appeared because I was already a giant LOTR fan when I finally got around to this series. Also Alexa Vega, my lil 12/13 year old heart was IN LOVE.
