Wild Cottage Ireland, Knitting Ranunculus sweater on a real, in action body to help you decide yours

  • In this special Ranunculus sweater episode - more of a knitting vlog style from the Wild Cottage Ireland #knittingpodcast - I show you what the garment looks like from different angles and in motion on an actual person on video. I tell you a bit about my body shape and measurements so you can get a better feel for how a #Ranunculus knit completely to the pattern with no modifications might look on you if you are a similar body type. I also tell you what I will likely do differently, to modify the pattern the next time I make it.
    I hope this helps you, and also, if you are new to sweater knitting, like me, do have a look at ‪@littlebigknits‬ #ranunculuslovekal thread on her (Selma's) group on Ravelry if you are OK to use Ravelry, because the folks there have good advice on knitting this sweater and are good about answering your questions. I will link that below. Enjoy your Ranunculus, and love your body 💖 Susan xx

    Hi dear! The sweater and your body are both so beautiful - I think part of the fit here is how long or short-waisted you are. If you look at the proportions of your collarbone to your belly-button and your belly-button to where your pants split, we each have a different ratio here. From my experience, most people seem to like loose cropped things to end right about their belly button when relaxed or just a bit below. This seems to ride up higher than that for you, but you might also just prefer slightly longer things.☺️
    For example, I’m 6’2”, but I have a super super short torso - only about a foot!!! It appears you have a significantly longer torso than me (one is not better than the other!). I think lengthening it would indeed help you get a fit that you like better. I hope this is helpful! Knowing this about myself revolutionized fit for me entirely and I think it’s not talked about enough as we consider how to alter garment patterns to fit our bodies.

      Oh this is super information! Thank you so much!! I'm going to see can I pin it to the top of comments so other folks can read it too in case they hadn't thought about this ratio in their own garments. 🤗

      @@wildcottageknitting I’m so glad!!! Another tip is to choose a size based on how much positive ease you’d like for your belly measurement (or sleeve or hip or whatever) rather than just your chest. I do this all the time!

      @wildcottageknitting  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I definitely need to do this now that my belly is bigger than my bust 😊 Another great tip!

    This has to be my favourite video, completely refreshing and honest. We all come in different shapes and sizes and no garment is going to look the same on every woman. I too have scoliosis so I completely understand what you mean about your different "side views" and posture.
    I have been toying with this pattern for a while and having seen yours I feel more confident to try it. I think I'd like mine a little longer too, I havent done cropped for 20 years and I dont think now is the time to change that......
    Also, totally loved your little dancing segment, you really are a breath of fresh air, honest and natural. Thankyou Susan xXx

      @wildcottageknitting  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ahh, thank you so much Sarah! 😊😊 You are the second commenter who also has scoliosis & I really appreciate you both commenting...it just feels good to know other crafters with scoliosis are around & understand the additional factors we may be taking into account when we make or shop for garments. 💖

      I'm there with ya girls. I'm body out grew short/cropped tops a few years back. Actually to be totally honest. Even when I wasvyoung and thin I didn't wear cropped tops. To me...its not attractive at ANY size and shape. I can be 100% happy not seeing belly buttons. They're ugly. Especially with a belly ring, yikes

    Menopause beat me up and made me look like I've been thrown down a flight of stairs. I also have a mild scoliosis that only me and my Dr can readily see. I've decided that making a knitted garment may be a lot more forgiving to my psyche than a department store dressing room mirror! I know, I'm nuts.
    I taught myself to knit over past few years and i feel that it's about time i make a first sweater. This Ranunculus is so great whether it's made of ethereal mohair or worsted weight what have you. Your opinion has helped demystify what i can expect and what i should expect being who i am mind, body and soul. Thanks. You're such a sweet gal. Your top is fab!

    Real people have Real bodies😉
    Do you have any yarn left? You could pull it back and knit it a little longer.
    You showing this has helped me so much, I have been wanting to make one for a while, seeing how it fits in Real Life has helped a lot, thank you, I will definitely make one!
    And as I prefer longer jumpers I now know to make it longer.

    Oh my goodness! I too am “5 foot two and three-quarter inches” with a scoliosis and (ahem) a bit more of me to love than last year!. So this was perfect for me! I just finished a ranunculus and made it two or 3 inches longer than the pattern called for and I think I’m happy with that decision. Love your podcast!

      @wildcottageknitting  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Tilly! You are so welcome, and thank you! And when I knit that Ranunculus, it was from the first version of her pattern- now it has more sizes, so that's helpful too. I've made many Ranunculus now, and I've come to realise my favourite length is to have sweaters hit just at my top hip bone. So if you have a fav sweater, see where that ends on you & measure from the underarm join to there. It will give you a good idea of how long to knit your Ranunculus for your height. Enjoy your knitting! 🤗

      Hi Emma, glad this was helpful! Do pop on to the Ravelry website if you can, to Little Big Knits group because in the RanunculusLove chats there are helpful tips and you can ask questions if you get stuck. As I said, I didn't do the cast on suggested in the pattern, I just cast on 60 stitches in long-tail cast on and then proceeded with the steps for the ribbing. The pattern has video links for help with the different stitches, but I think that I remember one step I wasn't sure of & didn't see a tutorial link on the pattern itself, but it WAS on the pattern info page on Ravelry. But again, do ask on the group thread if you have any problems 😊 Happy knitting!!

    Thank you so much for your honest review of the Ranunculus sweater. It's lovely to see a finished pattern on a real body. It is on my list to do this autumn, farming means I never have time to knit, crochet or spin in the spring or summer.
    I have to say your sweater suits you and its flattering, it looks absolutely fine at the back, it certainly doesn't highlight your curve. The yarn is beautiful. Your quite right to feel comfortable with your body, everyone is unique and perfectly acceptable. I nursed till retirement and there is no such thing as a "media perfect" figure that's why Photoshop was invented. Now I am the opposite bodywise being 5'9" and a regular size 12 but it was really useful to see it on you. I would definitely need it longer and that ribbing will also be narrower.

It’s so nice to see a knitting video from someone else with scoliosis, where things sit differently. No way are you in your 50s, -What a lovely ranunculus, I love the colour it really suits you, I actually think the length is really flattering, I think your jeans are the problem(sorry) - I too have gained COVID weight , I didn’t spend very much- in case I lose the weight , haha, but bought one new pair of comfy relaxed slim jeans (m &s sale) and an everyday dress to wear with trainers - I need to knit a ranunculus! X

      😊 Yeah, I think the bit higher waisted trousers are better with the cropped styles, I recently found a pair of nice comfy one too 😃 It was in my swim bag from last year LOL!

    Now making mine so this video is so useful for me so thank you!! I think if you had a slippery vest underneath (if you get me) it would help when it rides up. I too have expanded during Covid and as you say it’s loving our bodies pre Covid after Covid, so thank you.
    I love that colour on you, yes I agree a little longer maybe I would knit to the rib edge on mine and then rib
    I feel more comfy in sleeves so I’m going to follow the sleeve version but make them short. Siri alpaca joined with wool mammoth natural dyed wool. The timing of this video for me perfect thank you so much!!

    Hello! I’m so glad I found you. I wish I would’ve found you sooner though, because I’m just finishing up on my Ranunculus & I’m about to start the ribbing. I just recently purchased the pattern & I didn’t know that there were adjustments for a larger bust! Quick question, what size did you knit?

      You're welcome Joyce! If you are fine with reading on your screen check out the digital versions of the pattern, maybe that will work for you? I personally never print the patterns & just read them on my phone. I have used the free version on the Knit Companion app and now i use Knit Companion for all my patterns 😊 Good luck!

You’ve come such a long way with your knitting in the time I’ve been watching! I love the yarn too. Did you alternate skeins or do helical knitting🤷🏼‍♀️? I love your generosity and kindness. And what you said about our bodies is so true…we need to love them!

      Hi Debra, I think I heard that now she has updated the pattern with more sizes, so I’m not sure where the size I did fits on that now, but when I did it it was the first size of the 2. 😊

    I have only been knitting a few months, and I have knitted a flax sweater and a couple of baby sweaters. I haven't knitted the ranunculus, I am thinking about it, but I'm having a hard time understanding why it is so popular when there are so many others that are similar. What's the difference with this one? I would make mine longer and put on sleeves. I'm 58 and pear shaped too.

    • @wildcottageknitting
      @wildcottageknitting  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Melanie! For me, I think that one reason I like the Ranunculus is because I can get a summer top with just a single skein of fingering weight yarn. I’ve some really lovely single skeins that I’m excited to make into garments. Now that I’ve figured out how to adjust the pattern to a fit I like, I have knitted a second and am on my third. I didn’t used to think that I would like making a pattern several times, but I find repeating it makes it easier and quicker, and because I’m using different, colourful & variegated yarns, I think each one looks quite different. As an inexperienced garment knitter, I think repeating it is helping me understand a bit more & gain confidence. I hear other folks saying they love the pattern because it goes by quickly (once you know the stitches) and the lacework is so fun you don’t want to put it down. I agree with that now, too. I know what you mean about others being similar, and I think the Lovenote is one folks seem to make lots too. Maybe that will be my next obsession 😉 I hope that if you knit a Ranunculus you enjoy it 😊

    Hi! I haven't made it. I'm not even sure I would as I'm never going to wear a cropped Anything ever again. I am past that time in my life if you get what I'm saying.
    I love the colors but can't say I'm a fan ONLY because I am not fond of cropped tops.
