This video and this comment cemented my desire to knit the Ranunculus. It's been in my queue for years and I keep choosing other items over it. I too would love to see your projects @sueaxon3688
My standard "modification" on this pattern (I've made three so far and plan more) is to knit a much smaller than recommended amount of ease. I do 4" or less of ease and it's a fantastic, comfortable fit without the oversized look that never works on me. Also - if you're doing the 3/4 sleeves I recommend doing the short row shaping just below your elbow instead of at your wrist - it makes a LOVELY fitting sleeve! It's just a subtle thing but it makes the sleeves that much more comfortable and classy and I love mine so much. Also, I have successfully knitted a bulky weight ranunculus at very close to the given gauge which gave a dense, sweatshirt-like fabric that is so very cozy. With that thick yarn, the lace is not very open at all and even in the winter I can wear it without a shirt underneath if I want to.
I knitted 20 of them.... crazy.. lol.... from Plutolopi to mix of linen and silk/mohair.... double fingering.... silk/cotton etc.....marvelous pattern....
Mercy, You can't go wrong with a ranunculus. Ever. I have made a few and my two favorite are a black silk / linen and a Sandnes Garn Tyke Line in jelly bean green. I was shocked at how many colors of pants I can wear the green one with. I made my first when the pattern was released so I just use it and go with the flow no matter my yarn.I agree the German twisted is the way to go. It is the only cast on I use from socks to sweaters. I think I will pop a row or two in a different color at neck and sleeve edge on my next one. Maybe Drops brushed alpaca. Great video on such a loved pattern. Thanks Kaci!!
Great ideas. I also knitted one o of it with pearls in the lace section. Same color as the wool. Brings a little sparkle...🤩 And.... I love love love your channel. Looking forward to your next video of great joy 😊.
Hola! Yo hice hace unos meses mi primer rarunculos , pero después de ver tus modificaciones no puedo esperar para tener uno nuevo en mis agujas... Gracias por tus ideas!!!
Great ideas! I do a long-tail cast on of 90 sts. I also skip the short rows on the front, which makes the front neckline more comfortable for me. I’ve knit 11 ranunculi and thought I was done. But you’ve inspired me to do more!
@@debrarodriguezestrada2748 Neckline looks basically the same but without the little peak in the front of the neck that I was getting with the short rows. Lies flatter, that’s all. Lots of people do this and have talked about it on TH-cam. That’s how I got the idea!
Such a fun video Kaci! Gotta love a good Ranunculus interpretation. I really love the flexibility of the pattern and how even making it the same way twice and simply changing up the yarn content or weight can make a world of difference. And it’s always a go to when I need a quick win since it just seems to knit itself! ❤ Mia
Kaci, I have a question! I’m making one for my mom and have no idea how to choose ease. What would be a nice amount of ease for relaxed but not overly large? 10 inches??
Thank you for a lovely episode! ❤ I've got so much love for the Ranunculus sweater. I've made almost 20 of them and still haven't got bored. I've made a rolled neckline that works really well with thin yarn and smaller needles. Then there's unspun held double that got big ebough even without the raglan increases. In the halloween version I'm currently knitting on, I'm replacing the lace motif with a textured stitch that looks like a spider. 😊 I still haven't made a dress version but it will definitely become reality some day. 😅
I really want to knit a Ranunculus! I can't believe I haven't yet. The lipstick and lip oil look soooo pretty on you! Those natural neutrals are fave colors of mine in makeup and yarn lol
So good! Thanks for sharing my wintry one! On my earlier versions, I did the front neckline short rows as written in the pattern but since then, I leave them out because I like how it sits on me better without the front short rows at the neckline (but I always do the back ones). Take care and talk soon friend!~Stephanie
I have only one Ranunculus. I used a raspberry sock yarn paired with a light pink suri and knit on a US 8. I made it with a slight bishop sleeve with 3 inch cuffs and I love it. I am not as driven to have several in my wardrobe though I have been looking for a light colored variegated yarn for a summer weight version. However, I keep getting distracted by other new patterns. I love the dark green one that you knit.
Thank you!!! I fell in love with a skein of yarn on a trip last week to Ireland, but it was the last one available. I had my fingers crossed that I could find a tee/tank pattern, but had no luck. This is perfect and is now up next in my queue. Kismet! Appreciate you!
I'm making one with Holst Supersoft in Cinnamon and KFO Soft Silk Mohair in Copper at a 16st/4" gauge, where I changed the eyelets in the yoke for baubles. I planned on doing balloon sleeves and a long body with a split hem, but I'm running out of the mohair and IDK if I want to place an order for just one more ball. So now it might be cropped and half sleeves, which might be a little funny for a mohair top. But it doesn't get that cold here, so really it should be fine over a dress in the winter.
I've just knit my first ranunculus and I am very much looking forward to making more. I used an aran weight polwarth naturally dyed with avocado pits. For my next one i'd like to do a summer weight with a plant based fibre or maybe a linen/silk blend. I've seen Retro Claude making a Ranunculus dress on her channel.
I'm racing to finish my first Ranunculus in a week. I've used Drops Air, with bracelet length sleeves with icord bind off. I did the 70 stitch cast on, as you suggested, because I like sweaters to stand away from my neck. I used the double twist loop cast on mentioned in the pattern and demonstrated by Sun Dragon. I think it's great that it works up so quickly with so little yarn, leaving us eager to buy more yarn and start the next Ranunculus! I think I'm going to use a cotton and silk dk weight yarn for a short sleeved version next. I know some vloggers have used 5.5mm (US 9) needles and wonder whether to try this. Thanks for your video.
I love the Cotton Lino from The Wandering Flock! I just started a Luminos Tee using it and some Spincycle. I’ll post some pics to Insta and Ravelry sometime next week (don’t have it with me this weekend). Love the Ranunculi ideas. You may have peer pressured me into working one up.
Great discussion Taylor. I’ve never purchased an advent and I have had some FOMO. I loved the idea that they just give an opportunity to problem solve. I agree completely.
I wonder if you could make it a cardigan? Steeked or flat? Not sure how to sort out the lace knitting on the wrong side. P.S I am wearing my short sleeve cotton Ranunculus as I watched this video lol.
Thanks for this Kaci, do you do hauge swatched for this or do you wing it? I've sewn people say you dont need one but cant work out why that would be the case
I made the Ranunculus, and it’s a bit bigger than I expected. Also, the pima cotton yarn I used shows increases or mistakes. I’d like to possibly make one with a fingering weight yarn. I made the pressed flowers cardigan into a vest, and I like it.
Maybe I am super uncool but I am not sure I am convinced that i need a pattern That i would heavily modify that much. The only versions I like are very different from the original. I would rather just look at designs that are actually closer to what I like. It is interesting how people have really taken this pattern to a place I don't think any other knitting pattern has ever gone.
I completely understand that! I say knit what brings you joy and if this pattern doesn’t do it for you I wouldn’t waste my time on it if that makes sense
I have heard that the Ranunuculous is a very boxy fit, and not necessarily flattering on larger ladies without a larger bust. So if l make one l think waist and hip shaping would be a modification for me.
I have only just come to German Twisted Cast in which I love. What bind off do you recommend using to match this. I read somewhere I celandine Bind Off but I don’t find this to be a good match.
The make up looks lovely. I wear very little makeup, like you. But I like how yours looks. Are you an autumn colouring, or a spring? I'm an autumn, but an unusual one because even though I'm definitely a deep tawny autumn, I have fair hair, light skin, and blur eyes, so I find it really difficult to find the right make up colours. I thought I was a summer before I had my colours done, but I couldn't have been more wrong. The correct colours were so obvious. I had thought it was normal for me to look pale and washed out, lol. It says on the sight that they have a shade selector (they may have called it something else) to help choose the right colours, but I couldn't find it. Do you know where it is? What colour blush were you using? It looks so good on you.
Yes I am an autumn!!! Ok so for the shade finder : muse.meritbeauty.com/kaci go here and then select complexion and then select the perfecting complexion stick. Above the shades is a button that says “shade finder” you can click on that
I am so lost on this pattern. I can't even figure out what gauge I'm supposed to have it. Everyone loving it makes me feel dumb 😆. I'm just trying to knit it in fingering weight, and can't get started
@@ludouglas1 That is not what I wrote..please read it again. I said the pattern is popular on Ravelry, but not sure world wide. I am fully aware of the reach of Ravelry, I was one of the first to sign up for the platform when it was out of Beta testing.
Hi Valeria, i thought you were casting aspersions on how well it was doing 'worldwide...hmmm.' I thought unless you checked on the demographic of the sales on Ravelry (which I was inferring would show you where the sales were being made) it was odd that were seemingly questioning how popular it wS worldwide. My comment also wasn't questioning your long time membership to Ravelry. I consider that Ravelry sales INCLUDE and are part of the sales of a pattern. I'm not sure what nerve I've pulled in you or what your 'worldwide.hmmm...' comment was implying. Maybe expand on that.
You can also modify the gauge. Do a gauge swatch to get a fabric you like, or even just knit the yoke then measure the gauge there. Figure out your average stitches per inch by dividing the stitches in 4 inches by 4. Decide how big you want it. Go to the section in the pattern that says how many stitches you have after splitting for sleeves, because that’s the number of stitches in your body. Multiply your stitch per inch number by the inches you want your garment to measure. Pick the size with the number of body stitches close to that number. You could probably make it smaller than 46 inches by mathing the number of raglan increases you need if you want it smaller.
I have been considering this for quite a while, since I want to use a light fingering but avoid the openness of the created fabric. But: How do I tackle the presumably large difference in row gauge? Add more stockinette rows in between pattern rows? Add additional pattern repeats? Do something else I haven't thought of yet? :) This pattern really is a rabbit hole ! 💖
A good way to determine your natural waist is to stand in front of a mirror and bend sideways. Where that “fold” appears is your natural waist. Saves measuring or staring in the mirror trying to see where it sits on you. We are all different.
I don't know if you can consider this as a modification, but I am planning on adding the lace detail to the bottom of one of my next worsted weight sweaters :)
Kaci I just have to comment on your intro. The choice of music and images is really fabulous. Your creativity clearly crosses over several genres. Brava young lady 🎉❤
The smallest size is way too big for me.. I have wanted to knit it, but I have a size 33 bust. I am 5" 1" and I just turned 70. I think I would swim in it. You just started talking, so I'm curious to see if you will address this particular, I'll call it a situation.
@@murieldiaz7664 Thank you for your response to me. Although, after rereading what you wrote several times and reading through the pattern, I cannot make sense of your comment. I wonder if you mean that you switched to size 4mm needles. If that is not it, would you explain further. I am sorry I am not comprehending what you are telling me.
What a wonderful episode, Kaci!!! Soo helpful and inspiring. I have knitted 3 and, thanks to your video, are right now diving into my stash for more :))) THANK YOU 🤩 Also, going through all the comments makes me smile. What a lovely ranunculus community.
Made this pattern so many times. My last two, I have omitted the flower part of the yoke to make it less open and easier to wear without something underneath. Can see many more in my future.
@@christinemccoy5237 I made sure to keep the stitch count correct but repeated the sort of slip stitch pattern in the middle band. It was pretty straightforward 😀
I don't get it, how is this pattern so unique for all those modifications? I have made many of the modifications mentioned here on almost every pattern that's top down. Any top down sweater you can customize the length of sleeves, the length of bodice, the neck, the split hem, the colors, etc. How is the ranunculus pattern special in that way?
I just made my first ranunculus and made no modifications. I resisted at first this knit and I love it! What a versatile pattern! I would change the neckline size next time, as it was a little too big. Overall, it is an easy, fun knit!
I knit a Ranunculus recently. I followed the pattern pretty closely, but I decided to finish the short sleeve version with some cuff ribbing. I also had to knit a striped version because I ordered two skeins of Malabrigo Sock in Fiona but they may as well have been entirely different shade codes 😑
I HAVE to save this for when I attempt to try this sweater. I am new to fitted garments, so for now my security blanket is some of the new designers that do a step by step tutorial on here on how to knit their sweaters. Also a good way to sell their patterns also. I must buy this pattern and just be brave and try to make it without any hand holding lol.
just go for it, the pattern is really easy to follow. And if you stumble upon difficulties, look on the project pages on ravelry. There is a ton of helpful project instructions.
I am still hesitant to knit this sweater because I'm intimidated by the multiple pages in the pattern! I have written down all of your suggestions though. Yours look really nice.
Don't let the number of pages intimidate you. You only need to follow the instructions for the version you are making. Check out the videos from Sun Dragon's Ranunculus Knit-a-long. They are very helpful. Good luck!
I felt the same and am just wrapping up my first one. I followed along a knit a long by Sun dragon here on YT and she made it super easy and a great reference. Take the leap!!
I did i-cord BO on long sleeves w/o short rows AND on body. On body first I did GSR to add some length to the back so it didn't ride up and so that there was enough weight / drape. See Lynnsie's Ranunculus for spring over on rav. Very happy with my mods but may try your funnel neck idea for a winter one. Helpful video. Thanks.
I’m a new sweater knitter and I can’t wrap my head around a pattern that can be knit in any weight yarn. Do you just go by your gage with the yarn you are going to use and knit to inch width of what you want for a sweater? Any help would be appreciated
I had just decided to make one with yarn I bought to make a second cloud sweater. I am still make my first cloud sweater and do not want to purl anymore ( for now) thanks for the tips! Did you see the new one Tracie (Grocery Girls) made? She made a winter version with bobbles instead of the open lace, gorgeous.
I did a ranunculus in quince and co. In the Kestral. It is waaaay too large. I considered frogging it and knitting again. But, I can’t say I am 100% sold on the yarn. It is very heavy which causes it to hang loosely. But the one I did in Rowan felted tweed is perfect. I do want one knitted with a summer plant fiber yarn.
Love all the ideas for ranunculus mods. I’ve knit 2. 1 I did a cap sleeve where directly from the sleeve stitches on hold I did a 5 row rib and bound off. The other I did about 5 rows stockinette then the ribbing. I love that this pattern is use the yarn and gauge you want and the skies the limit.
I'm days away from knitting my first Ranunculus so this was so timely! I will knit a winter version at a tighter gauge but I like the idea of increasing the amount of stitches at the cast-on. Gonna give it a whirl!
I’m pondering my third R. I turned it into a cardigan by steaking at the center front and adding button band. It was fun, but with the big neckline it does not stay up so I have to wear it buttoned at the top. Not a big deal really!
@@YoungfolkKnits Just placed a Nutiden order and one of the colourways is basically this luscious colour. It goes on my needles as soon as it arrives in this version (#4)! Thank you Kaci!

That’s how I do mine. I just measure my gauge after the yoke and go from there 😁
I have been considering this for quite a while, since I want to use a light fingering but avoid the openness of the created fabric. But: How do I tackle the presumably large difference in row gauge? Add more stockinette rows in between pattern rows? Add additional pattern repeats? Do something else I haven't thought of yet? :) This pattern really is a rabbit hole ! 💖
Thank you very much for your great instructions! They are very helpful. 36" would be great.
My challenge with this pattern and others is that the smallest size is too big, so . . .
Totally agree.
The smallest size is way too big for me.. I have wanted to knit it, but I have a size 33 bust. I am 5" 1" and I just turned 70. I think I would swim in it. You just started talking, so I'm curious to see if you will address this particular, I'll call it a situation.
I have changed the gauge to 4 mm and it fits fine. Just try it on to confirm that the armholes are big enough
I have seen knitters go down needles sizes and they were happy- you could check- best wishes! 👍🏼
I am considering doing this as well! Did you do anything in replace of the lace work?
@@christinemccoy5237 I made sure to keep the stitch count correct but repeated the sort of slip stitch pattern in the middle band. It was pretty straightforward 😀
@@donnadunn5921 Thank you for your response! That is perfect.
I'm planning my first Ranunculus. Thank you for your ideas.
How much positive ease did you knit with?
I just made my first ranunculus and made no modifications. I resisted at first this knit and I love it! What a versatile pattern! I would change the neckline size next time, as it was a little too big. Overall, it is an easy, fun knit!
Hello everyone! A fairly newer knitter here, the pattern shows the sweater so loose and wide; how do you modify to make it closer to your body?
Would you please share whose project the turtle neck is by? Thanks!
Has anyone tried to make a boat neck, by not doing the short rows?
I knit a Ranunculus recently. I followed the pattern pretty closely, but I decided to finish the short sleeve version with some cuff ribbing. I also had to knit a striped version because I ordered two skeins of Malabrigo Sock in Fiona but they may as well have been entirely different shade codes 😑
Oh no! That is the worst when yarn doesn’t match
@@YoungfolkKnits thankfully they look super pretty together but definitely not ideal 😅
Hello from Swansea, Illinois. I have not knit the Ranunculus as of yet, not sure when I will.
Hello!! You might enjoy it!
I think I’ve knit 4….different sleeves, yarn weights and I added beads to the lace on the last one.😊
Beads??!!!!!! I want to see it!!!!
I did watch one of the Sun Dragon videos, about picking a size, so I think with her help, I will try it! Thanks for the encouragement!
I used Subdragon on Utube they have a series of videos that helped my knit mine- it was my first sweater ever! (I crochet)
@@lilianemann1441I used those too!
I’m late to the party…. I still haven’t knit a Ranunculus yet! 😮Thank you for so many ideas❤
Love these ideas!
Thank you for this podcast!! I don't feel comfortable modifying patterns, but I'm going to try and knit a turtleneck version. Love your podcast!!
You can do it!
❤️🌈
I had just decided to make one with yarn I bought to make a second cloud sweater. I am still make my first cloud sweater and do not want to purl anymore ( for now) thanks for the tips! Did you see the new one Tracie (Grocery Girls) made? She made a winter version with bobbles instead of the open lace, gorgeous.
I just finished my first Cloud sweater and I’m thinking about my next!
Oh man! Maybe try a sport weight plant fiber?
Awesome podcast. I have yet to make a Ranunculus but plan to so any tips is most appreciated. Thank you.
Sundragon on Utube has Ranunculous videos to assist- I'm a new knitter and I used those to help me knit mine!
Your timing is perfect! I just ordered Undine for my first Ranunculus - thanks so much for the suggestions.
Yay!!!!
Yesssss!!!!!
I'm days away from knitting my first Ranunculus so this was so timely! I will knit a winter version at a tighter gauge but I like the idea of increasing the amount of stitches at the cast-on. Gonna give it a whirl!
I hope you love yours!
My two are split hem with a longer length at the back. Comfy and longer length for coverage
Oh I would love to see them !! Are they on instagram
I’m pondering my third R. I turned it into a cardigan by steaking at the center front and adding button band. It was fun, but with the big neckline it does not stay up so I have to wear it buttoned at the top. Not a big deal really!
Oh that sounds beautiful! Where is your project? In instagram or ravelry? I’d love to see it!
Wonderful suggestions! I didn’t see the gorgeous gorgeous turtleneck version in your list. Would you mind sharing the source/link? Thank you!
Sure I got it by clicking the picture on the pattern page! www.ravelry.com/people/GALADknits
@@YoungfolkKnits Just placed a Nutiden order and one of the colourways is basically this luscious colour. It goes on my needles as soon as it arrives in this version (#4)! Thank you Kaci!
These are great mods. Thanks, Kaci! 💜
Thanks friend!
