    I was much later than you 😬. I purchased the pattern early this year and have made 2 short sleeves; I made one using a long tail CO and GSR in the front and back, and the other with a double twist loop CO and without the front GSR. The pattern is very versatile… My next Ranunculus will be a sweater ❤

    I’m so glad you addressed the short rows on the front of the pattern. Every time I see a video of someone showing their Ranunculus top, I can’t stop thinking that their top looks backwards! Then I keep thinking, do they know their top is backwards? And by then my concentration went off from the topic being discussed 😂. Thank you for giving me some peace knowing I’m not the only one with an issue with the front short rows used here!

      Same! I love it, but I am waiting for the front to stretch out and bring the neck down❤

    I am just starting my ranunculus. Yes, I am late to the frenzy, but I definitely see myself making more of them. I truly appreciate your explanation of how you decided which size you made. At 75 I really don’t want a loose knit but I also don’t want it too tight. I chose size 3 so I’ll see how that works out. Thank you for a great video. ❤

      Good luck with it! I was just thinking to myself, why don't I make life easy and knit another Ranunculus? But wondered what size. Maybe I should listen to my own podcast!

    Im so happy to have come across your podcast.... Love your ranunculus, colour , fit, look..It looks so gorgeous on you. Im circumnavigating knitting the ranunculus and am currently in a "gathering" phase (gathering info), so your podcast has been extremely helpful. Im looking forward on viewing your other podcasts :) Thank you :)

    Your Ranuculus is lovely. I did a long tail cast on when I made mine and omitted the short rows. I also didn’t swatch but fortunately it’s a very forgiving pattern. It knit up quickly so I can see why people do knit a few of these sweaters. I used King Cole cotton and silk DK and it was very cost effective and looks great.

      That sounds like a great summer top. I'm looking at my yarns and thinking of all the possibilities. Definitely wanting to hold a strand of mohair with fingering weight wool at some point.

    Glad you are better! 3 weeks for me too - very similar experience to yours - Covid is nothing to take lightly. . And thanks for renunculus encouragement. I bought the pattern then chickened out after reading it. I still want to make one. You gave good info about it!

      Dana, I bought the pattern ages ago, too! I think I was intimidated by the provisional cast-on at the beginning, which I ended up not doing. But I should still learn how to do it, and this pattern would be a good one to learn on.
      I'm sometimes also a tiny bit resistant to going with the thing everyone else is doing, but I'm glad I did in this case!

    What a wonderful recovery you made with the short rows - very clever idea. It was a pleasure to listen to you. I don't always listen to podcasts to the end, but I enjoyed your slower pace. It's the middle of winter here in NZ and I am knitting one of Olive Knits patterns.

    • @northwestknitting5993

      Your mention of Olive Knits had me look up Marie Greene's blog, and that was interesting. She had good piece there about getting the right size for cardigans, and a really nice crescent shawl that I might want to knit. So thanks for your comment!

    I appreciate your detailed information on your Ranunculus. I made one out of some acrylic yarn as a sample for myself and followed Sun Dragon Tips and tricks to get me through and then I donated it to a women's shelter. I have been searching and sampling some yarns trying to find what I want. Yours is beautiful.

    Thank you for the beautiful pattern. Didn’t learn about these until just recently and I have been knitting for about 5 decades and have always been afraid of short rows! Well dang. I did it today following your pattern. So funny to watch your video complaining about your short rows!! Anyway, I just want to say how much I appreciate the incentive to knit up something quick and well hopefully will go a long way with just a few successful attempts under my belt! I think your pattern and it’s success is helping others get over their fears of sweater making. Oh, I thought you were the designer! My mistake.!

      That's my favorite shawl. I knit it with yarn from Ewethful Fiber, all grown and milled in Oregon. Sadly, she is no longer making yarn, but has lovely fleeces for spinners.

    I love your ranunculus! I've started one too and was thinking about those short rows in the front. Now, I use short rows all the time in the front and the back--in the front lower down to do a Full Bust Adjustment (FBA) since most patterns are drafted for a B cup. I read somewhere that Midori wanted to create a bit of a boat neck at the ranunculus front (on an otherwise circular yoke) so that's why she placed those short rows there. I'm no designer, although I do sew and do FBAs all the time with wovens and knits,...it seems to me that short rows that high up will cause puckering if you don't do two sets of really short, precise short rows just below the points where the shoulders join. That's not how Midori has it designed though. If anyone knows more about all this, I'd love to hear your opinions. Greetings from Canada Cathy! #KnitNerdsUnite

    oh my gosh. I did exactly the same thing with my shortrows! I've also done lots of them in the past, so I don't know how it happened. I didn't notice the 'off-side' look until I finished the sweater though so I decided that it's now a design feature lol. Thanks for sharing your Ranunculus journey. We'll have to knit another one soon so we can get those shortrows right

    Your ranunculus is gorgeous! And I actually really like how the short rows in the front change the shape of the design from a normal circular yoke. I’m so impressed at your solution to centering what you had done😁.
    Sorry I missed you at Black Sheep, but I was sequestered pretty much all day in the weaving class. Glad you are feeling mostly better; lungs sometimes do take a really long, slow time to get better. And there still seems to be so much we don’t know about covid. Hope to catch up with you soon!

      Hi, Wendy! I do like the short rows in front, too. I'm not sure my short row solution was the best, because the back is so wonky now. I usually will frog something like this, but sometimes it's good to just live with our imperfections!

    I am inspired to knit the Ranunculus taking your lead! I will be 67 in 1 day and have gray hair (long, and you are inspiring me of thinking of cutting mine, not cut since COVID and it is below my waist now). I think I am about your size and your Ranunculus looks truly gorgeous on you. The yarn I have is Navia Bummull which is 50% wool and 50% cotton, fingering weight, and I can consider trying to hold 2 strands together because I love the density of your Ranunculus. Two questions: 1) do you remember which cast on you chose, was it the Double Twist Loop cast on, the Crochet Chain Tubular cast on or something else? 2) Your neck width looks ideal, not too wide, was that a consequence of the size you chose to knit or did you custom choose the cast on stitch count?

    • @northwestknitting5993
      @northwestknitting5993  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks so much, Andrea! Following the lead of some other knitters, especially Selma on BigLittleKnits, I didn't use either of the cast on in the pattern. I simply did a long-tail cast on. I think it works because of the big needles. All sizes start with the same number of stitches so you do the whole yoke before you have to decide on the size. Good luck!

  • @jeanbeicher2420
    @jeanbeicher2420 ปีที่แล้ว

    Lovely Ranunculus! I think the yarn is beautiful and the color is fantastic on you. You mentioned that you did the wider neckline but the neck isn’t that wide. Both versions have the exact same number of stitches once you start the Ribbing, the difference is the cast on. So if you didn’t use the cast on she did then you would have a different result.

    • @northwestknitting5993
      @northwestknitting5993  ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting! If I were a real knitting scholar I would try both of the recommended cast ons and see how they vary. But I just finished another Ranunculus (which I'll talk about in my new episode coming later this week), and again did not use the recommended cast ons.
      I'm sure that the yarn used would also make a big difference. I've had superwash yarns stretch out quite a bit. Also alpaca.

      Margaret, the shawl is the one I talk about in Episode 6. I mashed up two different patterns to do it: the body is the Noro Woven Stitch shawl pattern, and the wavy edging is from Folk Shawls by Cheryl Oberle.

    I think you are mixing labeling in this instance a black/white thing a as racist difference when in my opinion it is more a cultural difference. You will find cultural differences between people raised in New York City and Dallas Texas.

    • @northwestknitting5993
      @northwestknitting5993  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Celia, yes, there are tremendous regional differences in the United States, which I find so fascinating. But as you read Recitatif the author makes it clear that every cultural difference you try to associate with one race or another is simply wrong. The way she does it is that each character has history or cultural practices that one might associate with both races. It's really interesting.
