Dollar Tree sells 2 types of cleaning pads I use with my Swiffer Wet Jet. A white, fluffy pad I use for dusting and a microfiber pad I use for mopping. Both work great, they're washable, and it saves me money.
Heck yeah! I might have to go check out my local dollar tree for those. I just it is annoying how much waste they can produce if you use the solution from Swiffer.
As of November 2020 they have DEFINITELY made the cap harder to remove BUT IT CAN BE DONE. As Jillee says: boil the water and then keep the cap in for a while. I did it for three minutes, removing every minute or so both with the water actively boiling BE CAREFUL and then with the heat off, and each time I used a good oven mitt to try to turn it HARD but not rip it. It was easier each time and then finally a good hard TWIST got it off. Now here's the thing: Jillee doesn't show the inside OF THE CAP in the video. Several of the comments talk about "two flanges" that can be snipped to make it removable after the initial removal. I think Swiffer got what was happening and they have now REDONE this. Instead of a couple of flanges IN THE CAP, there are now approximately 12 small flanges or sticking out bits that line the inside top of the cap which is what makes removing it so hard. I got it off, but what I'm going to do now - fingers crossed - is: using a carton knife I will cut down EACH of the flanges and see if the bottle can still be: A) resealed; and B) will STAY sealed and NOT LEAK. Not only do I store the Swiffer with the bottle hanging down, it's been suggested if it leaks into the mechanism it will rust and freeze. I don't have vinegar at home right now so I will wait to refill it until I do and report back if I see any leakage. UPDATE: I used the Box Cutter and sliced off the flanges - it's easy to do but be careful as you can slip and cut a finger and you kind of need to cut counter to the flange - you'll figure it out - and then with a deep breath I screwed the cap back on ... and it held ... and off ... and it unscrewed firmly but easily ... and put it on ... and did it again and again. No problem. I haven't filled it with anything but it seems to screw on firmly and be removable again easy peasy.
@@YellowShoelaces Fantastic! Just be careful to make sure the cap refits tightly and does NOT drip. I just replaced my mop as I think some dripped in the wrong place and damaged it.
@@ChetaMorton Thank you, I'll watch out for any issues. But so far so good 👍 I do regular drip checks by shaking the bottle and squeezing it after I refill it
The bottle-filling hack is great information. I would advise everyone to go out and buy 3 or 4 bottles for reuse. You know that the moment Swiffer realizes they're losing money because of this hack, they'll redesign the bottle cap so that it can't be removed without damaging it. So best to stock up now. I've been using this same hack for my Fabreeze. I mix some water, a few drops of soap, a few drops of lavender oil (not too much as it's pretty strong), and a bit of vinegar/alcohol (just enough to help dissolve the oil {tablespoon or so}). Cheap and does the same thing as the fabric freshener.
I put the solution in a spray bottle when I couldn't get the cap off. Works great, and if you have a little helper in the house, they're happy to spray the floor while you mop.
Miya Sarai Heka Sia Adl Bey Moorish American Oh my god that’s exactly why I came looking for this video. Fabuloso smells so good and I am Absolutely obsessed with lavender. I wanted to see if I could get the top off the swiffer thing. I guess good minds think alike 🤗
Apparently, the company that make the floor mop refills have caught on to this hack. It is harder to remove the cap now. I held my empty bottle in the boiling water for over 5 minutes and had to use pliers (gently) to get it open. Didn't damage it and was able to put the cap back on to use in the swiffer mop without leakage.
Yes, I have tried using the boiling water hack and it doesn't work. What I do is just use pliers as well. I believe they made the cap have like stronger grips so it can't melt off. So if you are a new wet jet user use pliers instead!
At the dollar tree they sell reusable pads, microfiber rags and fuzzy socks all for $1💖 buy like 7 pads so you can do the kitchen laundry once a week . I feel like if you just buy 2 and keep rewashing those 2 it will fall apart .
Just got a Swiffer wet jet for my son whose obsessed with cleaning. He used the entire starter solution tank to clean all the floors throughout the house. Then was super upset when it wasn't refillable. After watching this video I was able to use a pair of old rusty pliers to twist it off in seconds and refill it. He's happily Swiffering away minutes later.
Been doing this for a decade. Works well. Just learned about using teflon plumbing tape for leaky caps which may occur after initially removing the cap. Boiling method removes the manufacturer's cap seal.
YESSSS Teflon tape. This is the answer I was looking for because you KNOW that thing is gonna leak after you remove the cap for the first time. Thank you!

Bought a Swiffer Wet Jet and used it for the first time minutes ago... nice!! Thanks for the hacks. Really appreciate the info about getting the cap off the solution container. It may give my senior hands a big test... appreciate the increased boiling water time and the use of plyers info. The water and lavender fabuloso combo sounds (and I'm sure smells) nice, as well!
Thank you! You have just saved me so much money!!! I had to leave the cap in the boiling hot water for like 2-3 minutes but once I did it screwed right off 👏🏻👏🏻
Omg! I just did this right now and it actually works! I put some water in a mug, microwaved it for 5 minutes, dipped the cap for 1 minute. It started bubbling and took a rag to take it off. It was very hot. Thank you!
I just wanted to follow up and say I just applied the solution to mop my floor today and it came out fantastic! I really appreciate this because those little Swiffer pads are expensive so I did the one cup vinegar one cup water few drops of Dawn and it came out amazing! Thanks for making this video!
Screwdriver over the fire works pretty well to melt a whole in the end opposite the cap! Just big enough for a funnel tip to fit into and because it sits cap-down, if you fill 3/4 of the way-no leaks and no leaks from the cap either to rust your motor out quicker.
@@RoseMarieMullins also you can buy small rubber furniture bumpers at Walmart and basically plug the hole and then remove it when you refill it kinda like they do squirt guns.
Just a couple more things... when you're washing cleaning pads, microfiber cloths, etc. you do not want to put in fabric softener, nor do you want to use "reduce static" on the dryer, including dryer sheets or balls. The static is what helps pick up the dust from the floor. Fabric softener adds a coating onto your cloths, which then will go onto your glass, floors, counter surfaces when you clean... not something you want to do! If they are really dirty, soak in vinegar (not bleach because that ruins the fabric, along with other reasons), then wash with detergent only. If you have an extra rinse on your washer, use it to get all the detergent off. Because of this, I would wash all cleaning supplies separate from regular laundry.
It never fails; when I go to use my Swiffer it is always out of the solution! I did this exact formula but I did not have Dawn but used cheap Ajax dish detergent instead. It worked perfectly and has a nice, clean fragrance. Thanks!!
I totally love you right now .... came across this accidently while looking for swiffer alternatives ..... i hate those swiffer cloths .. hurts the ends of my fingers pushing into each corner slot and such a waste for the environment.... As of 7/16/22, I just did the refill trick, and all I had to do was put locking pliers on the cap, and it just twisted right off, no boiling water was needed.

I saw a tutorial recently where she placed the top in boiling hot water. Let it set for a few minutes, then screwed the top off. AND she says the same thing in the video.
Yes this is really great!! Idk about putting the sock in the laundry, but i def still consider a fuzzy sock from the dollar store still a HUGE money saver from the pad refills. Thank you so much for the idea!!
I use microfiber rags when I clean and they have their own basket and throw my mop heads in it as well then just wash it with bathroom rugs then clean the washer.
This is the best homemade Swiffer solution yet! I just used it on my floor and it worked beautifully! I didn't have a sock like the one you show, so I used an old wash cloth and attached it with a couple of heavy duty rubber bands. I then trimmed out the little spot for the sprayer but I could have skipped this step. Worked so much better than the Swiffer pads!
This is a GREAT IDEA!! I like your refill solution too....as I have several cats, and did not really trust the Swiffer solution. So I've used your idea!! GO GREEN!!
This is great, I have been looking for a solution because I have a baby and pets and the smell of the wood safe cleaner is so strong and toxic smelling! Looking forward to using a water+vinegar combo!
thank you so much. i just bought one and chose not to buy the refill bottles and once the bottle was empty I couldn't get the top off. Now I know how. thanks!
I use old towel cut into strips that fit the Swiffer, just don't forget you need to consider extra so you can do the "wrap and tuck" for those things you tuck fabric into.
Hi! Thanks for posting. They must have seen the trick and upgraded their plastic since this post, because the hot water did not wórk for me to unscrew the cap. Any other suggestions would be super appreciated!
I have used the same swiffer pad for over a year. After I use it, I just take my vacuum cleaner with the hose extension and vacuum suck off all the dirt on the swiffer pad and it is like new again!
First off, thank you for this great video. If you don't want to put boiling water on the cap, which does work well, you can also take a medium sized flat blade screwdriver and get under that skirt on the cap twist while you move it around it. You're essentially stretching the plastic. Once you get the cap off, there are 2 options to keep from having to go through this in the future. You'll need a pair of wire cutters (dykes). You can go inside the skirt and cut off all of the little plastic tabs that grab on to the bottle neck or you can just cut off the entire skirt. It's only there to prevent you from opening the bottle and refilling. It serves no other purpose.
Omg you are so awesome! I'm buying a new wether today... My current one broke and I was thinking about how I could save some money on refills and this is totally awesome!!!! Thank you!
I have been trying for years I have poked the top to try to put my own solution cleaner in it and it never worked out I have always wondered how this can be hacked thank you so much
Ohhh my gawd this is a game changer. I love the idea of the siffer wet jet but hate all that crappy scent. I have huge allergies to perfume and was always looking for a way to get unscented. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Did I say thank you?
So you don't have to boil water everytime you want to refill, take a pair of nail clippers and clip off the security tabs just inside the lip. The cap will then twist on/off like a normal bottle cap.
@@kristinahurkala2351 it hasn't leaked for me. I'm sorry that that happened. Wrapping electrical tape, or Teflon Tape on the threads might tighten the grip between the cap and the bottle? (Though I've not done this with my bottle, Teflon tape is ment for keeping pieces screwed together tightly in plumbing)
@@serenitydabarbarian404 It leaked from the little holes in the center of the cap. I'm going to try it again, but with cold water. I used hot water, and maybe that is why that happened.
@@kristinahurkala2351 I did it and it didn't leak. There are tabs in the lid and tabs on the bottle. Make sure you cut the tabs on the lid only. UPDATE: I just read where you said it leaked from the center hole, not the edges. So I have no idea why. You may need to buy 1 refill bottle and try again with a different lid. Also, I took the Swiffer label off and wrote "Front" on the bottle when I put it in correctly. I'm always trying to insert it backwards. I wouldn't want to pierce a new hold in the silicone part of the top, which could cause leaking.
I’ve been using dish soap for everything. I make all purpose cleaners, cleaning the toilet and tub. You really don’t need a huge variety of cleaners. All u need is a spectrum of diluted soap. Dilute more for surface tops and floors then use larger amounts for tougher mess
I just wanna say you are saving my household money because we spend so much money on the pads and wash that I was so tired of it that I needed a solution thank you so much
For rhe wet jet mop pads i use some old shark steam mop pads. They discontinued my mop and the pump stoped working but i still have the pads and they fit perfectly!
You can also use pliers to open it. Wrap the plier ends with duct tape if you don't want to damage the bottle. Grab onto the top half since the bottom part is the locking mechanism. Took less than 5 seconds.
Great tip I knew about opening the bottle..but I never thought about the fuzzy socks I have several pairs I don't wear..oh & you know the reason they don't want the bottle to open . because they want your money..
Great hack just wondering I’ve seen in window washing mixtures they add baby shampoo, vinegar and alcohol to aid in the drying and prevent streaking. Is this a plausible ingredient for floors?
Worked perfect but I used plillers then clipped the plastic locks off so the top works just like any other screw top. No leaks and if you want you can use your favorite cleaner in it just pour and go.

Thank you! I just bought a Swiffer Wet Jet. I'm frugel, so this is for me!
Thank you for this tip! I must have had an older version because the cap came off like a breeze after using your suggestion. So helpful!
I have used the same swiffer pad for over a year. After I use it, I just take my vacuum cleaner with the hose extension and vacuum suck off all the dirt on the swiffer pad and it is like new again!
Thank you so much for this! I regret throwing away the last bottle! I held on to it for months trying to open it and finally gave up!
Great feedback! Thanks!
Omg you are so awesome! I'm buying a new wether today... My current one broke and I was thinking about how I could save some money on refills and this is totally awesome!!!! Thank you!
You can use the Terry cloth pads with the velcro strips from other brands that are reusable.
I got cap off my bottle today with only a good firm grip and determined twist and it was off in 5 sec. No boiling water . Jest saying.
Thank you!!! I’ve tried to open those bottles more than once!
You’re totally awesome for sharing this information. Great hacks, particularly the bottle opening one. Have a good day‼️
I have been trying for years I have poked the top to try to put my own solution cleaner in it and it never worked out I have always wondered how this can be hacked thank you so much
Ohhh my gawd this is a game changer. I love the idea of the siffer wet jet but hate all that crappy scent. I have huge allergies to perfume and was always looking for a way to get unscented. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Did I say thank you?
Yes! lol. I'm so glad. :-)
You are right I did it exactly how instructed and worked great also I did the sock thing and yeaaa no more pads
So you don't have to boil water everytime you want to refill, take a pair of nail clippers and clip off the security tabs just inside the lip. The cap will then twist on/off like a normal bottle cap.
So when you did this did the bottle leak? I just did this and the bottle leaked.
Cool! Thanks for the tip!
Worked and amazing. My pocket loves you! And you’re such a nice person for sharing those info!
Worked like a charm! Thanks!!
I'm trying that when my bottle is empty! Thanks for sharing!
I’ve been using dish soap for everything. I make all purpose cleaners, cleaning the toilet and tub. You really don’t need a huge variety of cleaners. All u need is a spectrum of diluted soap. Dilute more for surface tops and floors then use larger amounts for tougher mess
Absolutely brilliant Jillee. Thank you do much!
It worked perfectly! Thank you so much!!
I'm a kid and this has helped me thanks
First try wasn't long enough in the hot water... 2nd try worked... yippee I love hacks...
You are a lifesaver! Thank you!
What an amazing hack, this is going to save me so much money!
Great hack. Thanks for sharing! Is this solution ok for hardwood/bamboo floors? Will it leave a residue?
I just wanna say you are saving my household money because we spend so much money on the pads and wash that I was so tired of it that I needed a solution thank you so much
I used some channel lock type grip pliers to get it off!😁😁
For rhe wet jet mop pads i use some old shark steam mop pads. They discontinued my mop and the pump stoped working but i still have the pads and they fit perfectly!
great video, reusability at its best❤️
Recommendation for re-useable cleaning pads for the wet jet?
Started doing that years ago, one thing to watch out for is a leaking container it, will rust the motor and no longer work.
I have been taking the solution out after using it and storing it up right because I had that exact concern.
Lol I was just trying to open the bottle cap!! Thanks for the tip!!
Thank you Thank you Jillee. I was having a hard time with that cap
Wow you are a life saver and a money saver thank you so much we really appreciate it
Worked perfect but I used plillers then clipped the plastic locks off so the top works just like any other screw top. No leaks and if you want you can use your favorite cleaner in it just pour and go.
This worked perfect for me as well. I didn't even have to clip all of them. Just every other one.
