Early Castle Eggman was rough. Massive open areas combined with labyrinthine interiors, switch puzzles and enemies littered EVERYWHERE like a bad Doom wad. I'm very glad it got the substantial changes it needed. I had no idea about Forest Fortress, though!
We just watched how a overambitious turd turned into a beautiful flower. Castle Eggman seriously struggled to nail down level design that was both fun and fair to the player, but 2.2 finally made it into such an atmospheric journey where all the ambition, blood, sweat and tears paid off.
It arrived! I was so hyped for this :) I love the text between iterations that explain the context in which this levels were made, how they hold up in comparison of the rest and your opinions, amazing vídeo!

The neat thing is with 2.2 CEZ2, that rotating platform section at the start of the act? That was taken straight out of one of the SRB2 Christmas stages, down to the monitors and decor if I remember it all right!

I restored the Castle Eggman Act 2 from 2.0 and re-adjusted to be challenging and playable in 2.2.10, also with the Hub Mod re-implemented in the current version
Demo 4 - v1.09.4 - Okay, it looks ugly but i kind of like it. V2.0 - Hmmm, some improved sprites. V2.1 - Even better sprites! V2.2 - They looks similar to v2.1’s, just shading and minor adjustments.
I think the idea of Castle Eggman being a secret level is better, I personally think the level is too difficult to be a roadblock between Deep Sea and Arid Canyon.
I remember at 18:38 there were supposed to be spinning spiky balls while climbing up, but in your video there are none. Where they removed in a later update?

I honestly like CEZ1 better in 2.1 than 2.2, the level design was rougher but I liked the atmosphere more and the "setpieces" (the huge jump at the beginning and the big area at the end) and I also don't really like the bridge section at the end of CEZ1 2.2 I also kinda liked the music more, I love 2.2's CEZ1 music (well I love basically every song lol) but the 2.1 version felt much more menacing to me CEZ2 2.2 on the other hand is super cool
I agree with you, 2.0 and 2.1 CEZ music is so good, I absolutely love it, I also think that the atmosphere and setpieces on those versions are way cooler
2.0 is the best version I like the rock texture in act 1 it makes you think you’re on a mountain and what happened to that big structure in the beginning of act 2??? And can anyone tell me why it looks unfinished it seems complete to me.
i like how for a brief moment in 2.1, Knuckles was the best looking character compared to sonic and tails and its funny since he was the ugliest one compared to sonic and tails in the first couple versions he was playable
There's actually reason for that too! MotorRoach finished Knuckles first because he was the most in need of a new design, while Sonic and Tails' sprites were still acceptable.
2.1's Egg Castle still my preferred stage. 2.2's good but I enjoy the more open areas and initial forest setting. Also, has anyone brought back Demo 4 Knuckles?
Cez1 & 2 & 3 change so big with the community have been great with sonic team jr midi & digital music in srb2 history for 20th anniversary back in 2018 sonic team jr released a video for 2.2 coming soon in dec 7 2019 from 2.1 end really bad but the fans just start to play this game in every level in 2.2 they view on it but yeah cez1 & 2 change for this community & srb2 2.2 well never end but I do not think about star for 2.3.0 leak but is not complete now so wait for sonic team jr release 2.3.0

So, Forest Fortress Zone is technically Castle Eggman 1, while the Main Zone is Castle Eggman 2, and 3, while the Boss was Act 4.
I never new one of the most interesting bosses in the game started off so simple.
Too bad they removed forest forteress, that level had an amazing aesthetic and atmosphere
