Hey fun people. Remember the beginning of the Lion King?...where we see animals travel far and wide to the presentation of Simba. And during this ceremony Simba is marked by Rafiki, is dusted with sand and is brought forward on the edge of Pride Rock to be shown to the kingdom? Yeah me too... But my big question is what do all of these rituals mean? Why are they performed? And how do they play into Simba’s story?

FYI...The fruit Rafiki is carrying is not a coconut. It's a baobab fruit that comes from the baobab tree. The same tree that Rafiki lives in. Also known as the tree of life. 🦁

The Baobab tree is very important for humans and animals in the regions of Africa because the renowned Tree of Life provides water, food, shelter, clothing, medicine to relieve from sickness and other useful products from it. This is why the Baobab tree is also known as the Tree of Life to the people of Africa. So yes, Rafiki does live in the Tree of Life. And yes, I have seen The Lion Guard. Realistically, there are multiple Trees of Life spread throughout Africa than just having one "Tree of Life" in its existence but in the cartoon, there can be that one magical Tree of Life amongst all other Baobab trees. #fact

1. In my experience the liquit from coconut is refered to as milk.
2. That is clearly not a coconut. In my audiobook (in my mother tongue) is named a kind of pumkin.
My theory:
The ceremony is about the dust from priderock. The juice is just outlining the symbol and providing the stickiness.
Dusting him is conecting Simba to the pridelands as a place. He belongs to the kingdom and is official names prince, including the responsibility.

I think the reason Rafiki sprinkled dust onto Simba was to make sure Simba was healthy enough to sneeze, like someone spanking a baby to make sure it’s healthy enough to cry and take its first breath.

I'm a church going guy and that's EXACTLY what anointing is for... A person (in this case simba) was anointed for a special purpose-to be a king, to be a prophet, to be a builder, etc. and people were anointed with oil to signify God’s blessing or call on that person’s life

Lion King is a retelling of one of Mankinds oldest stories: some of which was used for Star Wars.
Mufasa is Osiris/Anakin Skywalker.
Scar is Set/Darth Vader.
Simba is Horus/Luke Skywalker.
*Simba WAS indeed anointed with oil, symbolizing his right to rule. Just like Luke has his finger up to his lips as a baby in EP.III ROTS, exactly like Horus in the "Papyrus of ANI", symbolizing his right to rule.*

I did some research and I found that melons and gourds were sacred foods to the Africans. Rafiki broke a gourd or melon and used the juice the anoint Simba's forehead. Its the equivalent of anointing a persons head with sweet oil or olive oil which is sacred. Sprinkling the dirt on Simba's head is kind of binding him to his homeland and Pride Rock so he is always connected to that place and to the earth.

Sooo is that why the pride lands practically died when scar took over, because he didn’t have an anointing ceremony and therefore couldn’t actually be king since it wasn’t his destiny.? The animals leaving the pride lands make sense since the hyenas over hunted but the entire destruction of the ecosystem was maybe a higher power coming into play over the fact scars responsibilities never included being king or taking care of the land.

Thats what I figured too, because they did the same with Kiara and Simba was constantly going on at her about being future Queen, even though she technically has a brother. I wonder how they decide which cub is to be the future ruler?
I think when I watched it (second or third time), the thought of *Nala's birth had occurred to me. The fact that Simba and Nala were betrothed and that they were the only cubs shown, I always thought the adults were all anxious for Sarafina to have a female cub.

My theory is that while the oil from the coconut may represent an anointing. The sand may represent connecting Simba to the Pride Lands as well as to the spirits of his ancestors/the kings of the past. In the Zulu culture there is a ritual called Imbeleko which means to give birth. The aim of the ritual is to connect the baby/child with his/her ancestors for protection and guidance. Which to me means that Rafiki is asking the kings of the past to protect and guide Simba throughout his life.
I always though it represented the connection between plants, earth, and animals.

To answer your question, ISAAC, I think Simba was definitely GETTING anointed, in a way.
I believe that the sprinkling of dust is either symbolic of a baptism or ritual cleansing/purification. Before he was anointed with oil and then was held to the heavens to be blessed by their gods or spirits of the past great lion kings.
Many animals take dust baths to help cleanse themselves and water would be too precious to use for Ceremonies.
In The Lion King 2, Kiara does get marked by Rafiki. She does get mark by the oil, but not the sand. You have to watch the beginning scene closely

🦁 if you notice at the end of the first movie. The cub at the end Kopa or Fluffy which ever you want to call it did not had that mark, but Kiara did had that little mark in the beginning of the 2nd movie.

It makes more sense when it gets to Simba's children later on (TLK2 & TLG) as only Kiara is known to have received the same ritual marking. So, I wonder how different Kion's Lion Guard marking is when compared to the "Anointing Mark", especially when that power, unlike the role of monarch, CAN be taken away (as we've seen explained with Scar in the TLG show & "Return of the Roar").
