    Great stuff brother , love everything you do! My s90v strider .75 AR just came in so I've been looking at the info out there and tests done on it being my first with s90v. Seems like pretty incredible stuff non the less. Love my 20cv , 3v , 1095 , m390 , vg10 , n690 , 80crv2 etc all for different reasons but its seems that this is gonna be my new steel king for now out of my lineup .

    So happy to see this mule put through its paces.
    What Pete doesn't tell you all is that there was a huge chip missing when I sent this to him. I was testing for edge stability with a steel rod at 30 degrees loaded with 15lbs. S90V just popped out a little 1mm chunk. M4 cracked, BD1N and VG10 kitchen knives barely deformed. (Still have to do 52100.)
    I'm curious how long that chunk took to sharpen out...

      Just so you know, he likely sharpened it on a system or grit and definitely an angle that is different. He refined his testing as it went. Not to mention that one may also have been treated with an inferior heat treat. Spyderco uses some trade secret special protocols to refine it. Hence this mule for future S90V models. You should be good after so long.

  • @111111111Tiger

    That means that the same Rockwell test block(a master used to calibrate a hardnesstester) can be measured 59 HRC on one tester and 61 HRC on second tester. Bluegem wrote: S90V hardened to 58, usually lose about 10% of S90V performance, hardened to 60, on manila rope.

    • @D00MTR33
      @D00MTR33 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not how it works. For one test blocks are usually in the 62-64hrc range. Once you go past 60 hrc, the difference between testers goes from 1hrc to 0.5hrc. If your tester is off, say your block is 62.43hrc(they're usually graded to at least the hundredth, sometimes thousandth) and your tester shows 62.7hrc(on average, you'd do more than one test to see what it reads) you would calibrate your tester until it hits 62.4hrc. That way you know its calibrated to that block and you can test it to make sure it's still accurate.

    You have been getting some very impressive results lately. There are a number of possible explanations for this, but there is one that might want to try to eliminate: I suppose there is some danger that your cutting technique is somehow improving. With that in mind, maybe you should repeat the conditions of a test done a long time ago (i.e. same blade, same edge) to see if you get a similar, or better, result.
    I'd like to think it is because these 17 degree mirror polished edges are just fantastic on these excellent steels. But I dunno ... some of the results just seem awfully good. And that should not be because you are somehow getting better at getting more cuts out of a blade. We assume the rope is unchanged. Any chance the board is worn or less rough in the spot where you cut (I sometimes wonder what fraction of the wear is the rope, and what fraction is when the blade contacts the board)? I dunno ... I just would like to see you eliminate some possible variables.

    • @CedricAda
      @CedricAda  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      xn bomb I think I’m getting better at sharpening, starting with much better edges that I used to get with the lansky and especially the worksharp. Its why im trying to specify as best I can which edges are which, my numbers are all not as comparable with each other as they used to be since I’ve changed my sharpening system. For the sake of clarity from now on I’ll only be doing 17° mirror polish to prevent confusion, so at least the work from the last 6 months is directly comparable with each other, as thats what I’ve been doing mostly. Anything else, like factory edges or ‘coarse vs polished’ will be more feature videos and I’ll make that as clear as possible.

    I was spoiled by ZDP. But I do like S90V. I don't have a knife with that steel as yet. Might have to go on the list of wants. EDIT: I blame you in the majority for my steel fetish. I used to buy a knife because it was a quality build and looked fit for purpose or just tickled my fancy. Now I factor in steel composition before anything. But hey, ZDP189 v D2? You know what I mean. I bought the Benchmade 'DBK' 200 because it was CPM3V.

    I wonder why Zdp 189 always gets overlooked by people. Maybe because people just look for crazy vanadium levels, and assume that's what makes a steel good.
    Dunno, it just seems to be left out.

    • @SHRINKBEADS101
      @SHRINKBEADS101 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think ZDP-189 is mostly left out because makers don't offer it. Only Spyderco, but their plastic handle- modern blade shape knives going for premium prices are not for everyone. Besides, the Japanese source of this steel is probably selective.

    For centuries, we've wondered what the limitations of the human arm might be. The greatest scientific minds could only speculate; until now. As it turns out, round after round of rigorous rope cutting tests, do in fact exceed the human arm's capabilities.
    For this reason, I believe your arm must be removed, and replaced with a robotic appendage of some sort. Of course, it would be best for you to keep your own hand, to avoid making the changes too traumatic; assuming this is even possible.

    You know, i've seen a lot of these videos now where you strop an edge back at the end of test and can one again glide through paper. It has really been bothering me because i really want to know how long the strop repaired edge lasts.
    I suppose i could sit here watching youtube videos with a pile of Manix 2s on my lap, cutting rope and pieces of paper---in front of my dog's nose while he lies on his pillow watching me with eyes that say "why? why do you get to shred all of these tree-based items, yet I get yelled out whenever i try to help with this chore?" and I have to look him in the eye and say "you are a dog and I am a man.... like a grown-up man who can make his own decisions about who can and cannot shred mail and old print outs in the house. you are a dog, and therefore you can chew on your toy but you cannot shred paper, cardboard, tp, the curtains, the furniture, my slippers, the mrs' brassieres, etc. sorry not sorry" and he sighs and goes back to dreaming about the birds and the bunnies and the cats that invade his backyard dominion and i sigh and go back to dreaming about which Manix 2 exclusives and sprints runs I still haven't found yet, and which super steels I have yet to try because Spyderco hasn't made a Manix 2 sprint run, or that it would be nice if benchmade would start releasing the freek in a plethora of super steels because the axis lock is superior to the caged ball bearing lock because it only requires half as many digits to actuate the lock mechanism---and retesting the strop-repaired edges, I wouldn't have to sit here pining for answers from Pete.
