- Gordon Ramsay is furious as squatters have occupied one of his pubs in London. The York & Albany pub in Regents Park closed temporarily while the chef was planning to lease it to new partners, and during that time, a group of squatters took over the property.
Photos from The Sun show six squatters sleeping inside the building. They have put up a sign threatening legal action against anyone trying to remove them and they have barricaded themselves inside using kitchen appliances and glued the locks shut.
Gordon Ramsay reportedly contacted the police, but they haven't been able to remove the squatters from the pub yet.

Squatter's rights have always incensed me. If we afforded thieves the right to keep stolen property that's in their possession, the public would be outraged, but that's precisely what we do with squatters who are illegally occupying someone else's property.
There should be a limit on how many properties you can own.

In the UK, even if you don’t pay your electric bill they legally still can’t get you off
It's takes 1+ years at least to cut off someone's water, usually lack of payment. Electric might be 6 months ish if you don't pay. I can be done but takes forever to do

When you squat a property you change the electricy and water into your name so that the owner isn't being billed otherwise it is unlawful extraction of electricy which is one of the main ways squatters get evicted so setting up an account is standard procedure

A cousin of mine used to do rentals and had problems like this.He completely ignored "squatters rights",went in where they were squatting,threw all their stuff out and dragged them out by their necks.Never got into trouble once.Maybe they were too scared.Thats what Ramsay needs to do.

In about 2012 squatting in residential homes was made criminal in England. We need to make that also the case for commercial properties.

If the squatters are calling the pub their home and they're living there wouldn't that now make the pub a residential building? Isn't squatting illegal in residential buildings in that area?

This pub in particular is in central London and is surrounded by residential homes with other bars and restaurant close by..
Strict zoning. where you have suburbs devoid of any stores bars and restaurants is an North American thing. In London mixed use neighbourhoods are more the norm, and change of use is common..

Squatting is popular here with the people who don't want to get jobs and would rather steal from others. I guess that's what bothers me.

Easily avoided. Back in 2001 I was a guardian tenant, which involved living in an empty property in central London for free, or minimal rent. The catch being that someone had be on site 24 hours a day. In my case I shared a 12 bedroom mansion in Chelsea with five other people, so creating a rota was relatively easy, especially as one of the tenants worked from home, and another liked to stay in most evenings. The other catch is you get one month notice to move, or in some cases a week, although i stayed in that one property for a year.
had a tenant at my parents 4 bedroom house she got herself a boyfriend and rent was cheap paid by council i used some of the rooms for storeage and found some remnants of furniture my hnc biology college notes burnt in garden give her notice to quit and she let couple of her friends in to squat so an old gut and my stepson went over and i took a window out with an axe and large celtic shield to pin the guy to wall as we must not touch him well sweeping up glass 2 police cars arrived as there only 1 guy there and he phoned police but police were quite ok they left the old guy took out the fuses and i removed the lock and the suatters mate turned up with their i told them get now but 2 weeks later they broke in and nicked some stuff . what ramsey shold do is break in with some heavies chuck them out then board up windows and extra locks on doors cut electric and water and put notice up no electric and water

The squatters are highly likely to have caused damage on initial entry and will be claiming it was that way when they took occupancy.

In the USA people offer pest and squatter removal
You can remove squatters using an interim possession order ( IPO ) or making a claim for possession. Do not try to remove the squatters yourself using force or the threat of force - you're committing a crime if you do.

Simply being on another person’s non-residential property without their permission is not usually a crime. The police can take action if squatters commit other crimes when entering or staying in a property.
Crimes include:
causing damage when entering the property
causing damage while in the property
not leaving when they’re told to by a court
stealing from the property
using utilities like electricity or gas without permission
fly-tipping
not obeying a noise abatement notice
I guarantee they have broken majority of those..
They need to pass a squatter law that gives a felony out to anyone that takes over a property and additional charge for each piece of property they destroy. Fines for costs incurred by the owner or restitution. Now these people may never pay it back but something has to be done.

How can squatters take over a business? They don't own? I know there's legal loopholes, but this is stupid. This needs to be changed.
