I've always felt that this is how a starship should work. It just doesn't make sense for a team of highly-trained officers to just be waiting around for one person to order them to do the simplest common-sense things like "Raise shields!" when they're actively bring fired upon.
Riker got to shine in this series the way the writers never really gave him a chance to in the movies. Loved seeing him back (and would love to see him do more in Legacy)
Lower Decks really made this possible though. It showed he was a hard wearing Kirk like captain who was always knee deep in some kind of trouble, with ambient upbeat jazz playing in the background. This is exactly what Lower Decks Riker would have done.

This needs to be the new "Riker maneuver" shoving a ****ing asteroid down an enemies throat certainly beats venting a cloud of volatile nebular gas at an enemy.
I agree with this sentiment, though having used the Riker Maneuver in STO, it's quite fun to kill a group of tailing ships with what is essentially starship flatulence.

2:45 really plucks the heart strings. They look like the aliens from Farpoint episode 1, and the way how that bridge is being lit by the viewscreen. The music is just so well done.
There are so many great moments here, but I think what is most underappreciated is @ 1:00 where once Picard gives the order to stay in the energy wake, the helms crew (LaForge specifically) understands the assignment and they all instinctively preform their duty to... almost create order out of chaos and it is beautiful. Riker is a hell of a Captain (and we all know who to thank for that), but Picard is the inspiration that we all expect him to be. Absolutely beautiful!
2:52 These aliens looked like the jellyfish creatures from TNG's very first episode ("Encounters at Far Point"), seen now with 21st century CGI. If it's really them this makes it so bittersweet since they were Picard and his TNG crew' very first contact and likely one of their very last adventure as a crew and a family too. Too bad Deanna is not traveling on the 'Titan.' If she does, she would likely translate the humming of these aliens as: "A feeling of great joy and gratitude! Great joy.....and gratitude!!"

I think the idea was to make it as dramatic as possible, if you said; "target a nearby asteroid, calculate an impact trajectory, and release" then it doesn't sound as cool and already tells the audience what he's planning
This is very reminiscent of the "Taggart manuver" at the climactic battle scene of another great Star Trek ( kinda) movie, Galaxy Quest. That time they were dragging mines. Reading other comments shows me I'm not the only one that noticed.
Everyone's mentioned all the details that make this scene work so well, but I'll give a shout out to the decision to have all the technobabble overlap. It keeps things urgent, it plays to the idea that these are skilled and smart professionals handling a complex sci-fi machine, but it doesn't drag things out or call attention to itself. Very nice touch.
They really should have made this as a film instead of a TV show. They easily could have made two films with two story lines, the first film would feature both story lines which completes the first story but leaves the second on a cliffhanger. Then the second film finishes off the second story line. Otherwise, as a TV show instead of bringing a lot of characters back just to murder them in brutal ways, it would have been better for a TV show to have featured all the old characters from every show. In fact they should have aimed to have featured every single main and side character in the show. Use that show as a way to bridge all the past shows into one and from that you can make several spin offs that follow the different characters with cross overs and some of those old characters re-appearing from time to time along with new people.
Amanda's performance was a bit too much of a daddy-homage, but I appreciated her "fan service." Her father's performance as the villain in Star Trek 6 was great.

This scene summed up everything new Trek should be. You have the badass action with throwing the Asteroid, but you also have callback to the classic "ride the shockwave" solution we've seen in TNG and Voyager, and finally a moment to take in the beauty and wonders of the galaxy that Star Trek is all about exploring.

No. They state in the episode that these are new lifeforms. Also, no official confirmation that they are the same species.
This scene summed up everything new Trek should be. You have the badass action with throwing the Asteroid, but you also have callback to the classic "ride the shockwave" solution we've seen in TNG and Voyager, and finally a moment to take in the beauty and wonders of the galaxy that Star Trek is all about exploring.
If that has been Riker or Picard 30 years earlier there would have been a photon torpedo right after the asteroid
