    Just a few things to note.... 1.) no, I didn't season my rice but you are more than welcome to! I enjoy the more 'raw'/natural flavor of it but you can look up recipes online that include rice vinegar, salt, sugar, etc. It's definitely another tasty way to enjoy sushi rolls! 2.) I know that the bamboo mat isn't used as a 'place mat' of sorts lol I had it there in case I needed it (you can see in a few of the sped up clips I used it to help me roll) but this time around my hands were rolling just fine. Figured I'd still keep it in the video in case people didn't know about it so they could get themselves one if they need the help! 3.) yes, Fig was on my stove... I'll leave it at that lol.
    Glad most of you enjoyed the video! Happy cooking to you!!

      Tina P I'm asking honestly: how was I being passive aggressive? I was just trying to address some major points that a lot of people were hitting on in one place so I didn't have to reply the same thing a million times to loads of people.

      Thrift Thick I think as Minnesotan we come off as being "passive aggressive" more so than other people. don't worry about what other people think or say about it, I don't think you were being PA, but I'm also Minnesotan so we speak the same language. :-P

      Tina P First off, I found nothing passive aggressive about what she had to say. Secondly, even if she were to be passive aggressive, that'd be her prerogative especially with how some people can be so hateful towards her over literally nothing. Maybe you should go through the comments and give them Hell instead of her. 😘✌

    washing rice helps get off the extra surger and starch they add to rice

    • @tedoymisojos
      @tedoymisojos 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It also flushes out the vitamin coat they spray on it too. Since my diet is FAR from perfect, I prefer to not wash the rice so far.

      rice is dirty..but non asians tend to not wash rice or eat calrose rice...its bullshit that it is flushing away vitamins..it is flshing away the dirt and grime

    • @tedoymisojos
      @tedoymisojos 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      No its not bullshit. Most white rice is fortified. The vitamin complex is on the surface mostly. even on the bag is says not to wash it (on mine).

    • @kjenks77
      @kjenks77 7 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      "Real" rice is very dirty and has rice weevil eggs in it (they are bugs) look it up. You should definitely rinse rice. Now if you're buying minute rice or other processed rice that is a different story. Not to put down non asians but trust an asian person's advice when it comes to rice we know what we are talking about because it is knowledge passed on through generations. Wash your rice -_-

      kimmie drummer mix a little bit of rice vinegar with salt and sugar to season the rice.. I add sesame oil after the rice cools

    • @rainstarr1
      @rainstarr1 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Carlie Morgan I add the vinegar and to my rice after cooled a bit. Then make my roll. I wipe my knife on a paper towel when it gets gunky with vinegar on it so it keeps the roll flavorful. Then I dip it in my sesame oil and salt dip. I was just surprised Cassie didn't use a seasoning in her rice.

    • @carliemorgan1871
      @carliemorgan1871 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i usually take some rice vinegar and boil it with some sugar and salt until it's incorporated, then pour over the cooked rice, stir and let it cool.. that makes the rice stick really really well

    • @rainstarr1
      @rainstarr1 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Carlie Morgan Nice. I'll have to try that method too next time. I literally talked to the computer when Cassie put the rice directly on the nori. I was like "aren't you going to season the rice first!?" LOL!

    Pro tip for cutting sushi into even rolls: you cut it in half, then line up the halves together and cut those in half (and so on). It seems silly but this is how sushi chefs do it to keep the cuts even.

  • @unsoundorca4676

    I always wash my rice because I use a rice cooker that has a little steam hole and if I don't wash the rice first, starch escapes through the hole while it's cooking and gets ALL over my kitchen and just creates a huge mess. But you don't HAVE to wash rice, it's not going to make you sick or anything. Yay I love these cooking videos, Cassie!

  • @ghosties4502
    @ghosties4502 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    You should never stir rice while it is cooking! Opening the pot while it is cooking lets out the steam which is what is actually cooking the rice! Also you should be boiling the water before adding the rice! Boil the water, then put in the rice, lower the heat to low-medium low (2 or 3 on most stoves) keep covered and cook for 15-20 (read the instructions on your rice people!) 🍚🍙🍘

      The reason you're not supposed to remove the lid from or stir rice while cooking is because it makes it sticky, which is exactly why she SHOULD stir rice used for sushi.

    Hey Cassie, love the videos!
    Viewers: I have a cat named Mio and he is forever jumping onto my counter tops! It's a cat thing! I of course keep him off them when I'm cooking but otherwise I don't try to stop it. I just keep disinfectant wipes EVERYWHERE and I use chopping mats to cut food on. I'm pretty ocd about cleaning even the litter area is abit excessively cleaned. I'm only telling you this because I don't think you should jump to conclusions about cats or their owners. Figiro (sp?✅) was obviously off the counter while she was cooking. Chastising her about the sanitation of her kitchen is not only presumptuous but a bit rude. Golden rule y'all! Bless others and be blessed!

    Yum! What a great lunch idea. :)
    Some notes: You wash rice to get the extra starch off. Then, you should generally avoid stirring the rice because it can make it have an unpleasant texture (gloppy or mushy).
    Usually when you make sushi, you season the rice with a combination of rice vinegar, salt, and sugar. You can find ratios for this online, or you can buy pre-mixed sushi rice seasoning.
    The bamboo mat is suppose to help you roll the sushi; Use the bamboo mat to help guide the roll, which lets you make a tighter roll.
    If you make this, and plan on saving some of the rolls, you might consider waiting to cut the rolls to avoid the avocado oxidizing.

    • @thriftthick
      @thriftthick  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      all good notes thank you!! I don't season my rice because I actually like the more simple flavor of it unseasoned... you're more than welcome to do so though! And yes the mat was just there for me in case I needed it but I was able to roll things just fine without it, hence it went unused lol ^^;

    Looks tasty!! A lot of ppl are talking about Fig on the stove but she had literally just turned on the element and the water wasn't boiling or even hot. Give her some credit guys it's so frustrating when the comment section is full of people policing her every word and action. As for people criticizing the cat on the stove for unhygienic reasons, it's unavoidable with cats, anyone who thinks otherwise is just deluding themself.

      Thrift Thick I think most recipes call for 1 Tablespoon per uncooked cup but I usually do 2 Tablespoons because I don't notice a difference otherwise. I add a little bit to my sticky rice for non-sushi things (like terryaki salmon over rice) because I love the added flavor.

I also make a bomb sweet potato sushi: cut peeled sweet potato into strips and marinate in 1TBS oil, 1 TBS maple syrup, and 1 TBS sesame oil. Bake at 375 for 25 min. Hope you're having a great day!

    hi Cassie, I'm a relatively new subscriber, my family is from Japan and i give this video 1,000,000 thumbs up! In Japan, we have a particular kind of rice we use which is called "Sushi 🍣 Rice" in English. But you can use any rice, even brown rice....if you add the rice vinegar, sugar, etc as you described in your post, even non-sticky rice will become sticky enough to make rolls and it will be less starchy. Kiyo tsukete, ne!

    That looks really good! Perhaps you did it but didn't mention it, but make sure to wash your cucumbers and avocado with soap and water prior to cutting them up to get off any insecticides or other yucky things. (Yes, chemicals soak into the veggie, but most stays on the outside.) Even if they're organic, they could be treated with "certified organic spray." So when people cut into their veggie, the knife transfers any bacteria from the outside to the inside, which can make people sick. In sushi it matters, due to it being eaten raw. (This is why I don't get lemon at restaurants.)

    How do you keep the avocado from getting brown?? Doesn't it get brown in the fridge when you leave it even overnight? Or maybe I'm doing it wrong lmao

    I don't wash my rice either. I believe people do not understand how most rice is processed, at least here in the US. Rice is already pre washed and then enriched with vitamins. The only reason one may need to rinse it is if they want to remove some of the starch so that it is not sticky and the grains separate more easily. It is simply preference.

    Not washing your rice isn't a huge problem. All it does is wash the extra yeast off the rice. So it isn't going to slowly kill you haha! You're my favorite TH-camr ever btw! Love you!! ❤️❤️

      1979carmens that would be called a dietary vegan, I think. The other thing with cruelty free products and all that is ethical vegan? At least I've heard it that way.

    • @omgxwtfxily
      @omgxwtfxily 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      1979carmens She doesn't follow a vegan life style. She still consumes animal products when it suits her. Plant-based means you eat mostly plant-based foods. She could go completely vegan. It's really not that hard.

    • @omgxwtfxily
      @omgxwtfxily 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mary Snowdon Veganism is all about ethics. Veganism is a lifestyle and you don't use animals. For food or animal testing, or any form of exploitation.

    You wash the rice because it gets rid of the grime on them and washes off most of the starch which makes your rice really mushy and I don't mean the good mushy

    Really trying to wrap my mind around all the negativity on a sushi video. Fig was a kitten in this video and they're always into everything! Didn't think twice about the cat being on the stove- my two are always being shooed away from where they're not supooosed to be. I always love your plant based recipes- keep doing them please!! P.s. you make it look WAY too easy to roll!!
