- Even though most newer phones have wireless charging, one research report from IHS showed that only 29% of people use it. Why hasn’t it taken off?
Following is a transcript of the video:
Wireless charging sounds great, right? Just plop your phone on a stand, a pad, or even furniture with built-in wireless charging, and voila, it starts charging. No cables, no fuss.
Even though most newer phones have wireless charging, one research report showed that only 29% of people use it. Why hasn't it taken off?
Well, first of all, you need a phone or a phone case that's capable of wireless charging, and not everyone has one. Qi is the standard for almost all wireless chargers. Phones that support Qi are mainly newer phones from Apple, Samsung, Google, and LG.
Secondly, wireless chargers are slower than wired chargers. The thing about wireless charging is it uses something called electromagnetic induction, basically transferring energy from one place, like your charging mat, for example, to another, your phone.
Wireless charging uses two physical coils. The induction coil in the charger and the receiver coil in the phone. If you don't align the two coils on top of each other, your device won't charge correctly. This method of charging is slower than plugging your phone straight into an outlet, which lets the power flow from the outlet through the wired charger to your phone.
Most wired chargers have a rating of at least 12 watts, while most wireless chargers only reach about 7.5 or 10 watts. Basically, the smaller the number, the longer it'll take to charge your phone. And if you have a case for your phone, it'll charge even slower, or might not even work at all.
Some wireless chargers do have a fast-charge mode, but it'll only work with phones from the same manufacturer. So a Google Qi charger might fast-charge a Pixel but not a Galaxy. Yes, if you're not looking for a fast charger, or if you're only charging your phone at night while you sleep, then a wireless charger could work for you.
But for the most part, you can't use your phone while it charges wirelessly. If you take your phone off the wireless charger to do anything, it'll stop charging. You can't text comfortably without lifting your phone off the charger, you can't sit on the couch and scroll through Instagram, and you can't even take a phone call properly. But with a cord, you can do all those tasks while staying plugged in.
Also, these wireless chargers are technically not wireless. They still have to be plugged into an outlet. The only wireless part about it is eliminating the wire between your phone and the charger. The price of these chargers is another issue. The more affordable chargers range from $15 to $30, while the fancier ones cost anywhere from $60 to $100. But it doesn't look like wireless charging is disappearing anytime soon. One report is expecting that by 2023, there will be a cumulative shipment of 2.7 billion wireless chargers and 6 billion devices with wireless charging capabilities.
But for wireless charging to become the norm, companies will need to figure out ways to make it more practical and frictionless. Companies like Pi, Energous, and Ossia are getting there with their truly wireless charging products. They claim that their products can charge multiple devices wirelessly when you bring them within a short range, kind of like how WiFi works.
Basically, if you hold or place your wireless charging phone, tablet, and headphones around the wireless charger, it'll begin to charge your devices, which sounds pretty cool and is a great step forward. But the thing is, none of these companies have released their product yet. It's just all talk. Just like Apple with their AirPower. So, I'll believe it when I'm scrolling through Instagram on my couch while truly charging my phone wirelessly.

Can you differentiate volt and watt?

Why is everyone acting like they can't have both a cable and wireless charger and use it depending on the situation
Exactly what I do
Because they cant? Have you seen the video dude? You need to have a supported device + a wireless charger to be able to charge wirelessly, which is not cheap and most people don't have it, it wouldnt really be worth it if you somehow manage to get these things just to use it for one or two times too
Being a note 9 user, I don't remember the last time I used a cable to charge my phone. I mean I use the headphone jack more than the usb c AND I barely use the jack too (I still like the jack though).
Wireless is great unless you want to do anything on your phone and that's the big downside and the reason why I stopped using mine actively
You must not use your phone often while its charging
Also a Note9 owner, same applies lol
Yup same over here with the N9 I also have a usb C port plug bc of when it becomes too humid it so.sometimes trips the moisture se sensor and takes quite a while to go away, as for charging when I'm at my pc i just drop my phone on the charger and usually before I go to bed I have a 100%battery I try not to charge overnight and If I ever forget to charge beforehand a quick 30 min cable fast charge in the morning is usually enough to het me trough the day

Ok, at least I know that now.
One HUGE advantage - no need to keep buying more lighting cables. As these are consumables for most people (and they break after three months or so), using wireless charging saves a lot of money in the long term. Also, it’s easier to carry one charger instead of many different cables. It’s true, most devices don’t support wireless charging but for example the AirPods, Apple Watch and iPhone do.

I actually like the 5w charger Apple has always given because it’s perfect for charging the phone overnight without killing the battery health like a fast charger would. But I still do fast charge during the day sometimes
You're the reason why society is failing, because you accept bad things, would you also accept if car manufacturers started making only cars that can go up to 50km/h because "it won't kill the engine overtime" ? Clown.
OnePlus has been doing 30W wired charging for years without affecting battery health since the voltage steps are handled by the charger, no conversion loss inside the phone. So eh, sure, it works, but it's really not that much of a problem to fast charge safely. Wireless, on the other hand, is obviously kinda bad because of the heat

I mainly use a wireless charger and capacity has only gone down 7% in year 1. I also can use it on the charger because about 1/2 my time is using it for conference calls or playing audio/video… I just key up something and place it back on the charger if it’s below 90%. Every couple days I might have it drop below 60%, especially if I’m not working that day but it prevents a lot of charge cycles.

There's also car mounts with wireless charging which I use on a regular. Very useful when using navigation or using bluetooth.
I use a lightning cable in my car while using navigation with my phone on a vent mount. Works perfectly fine. Not usually for long between pickups but it keeps the battery at a good level all day.
One major benefit of wireless charging is you don't ware out your physical charge port. It could save a costly repair.
I have a wireless charger by my desk. Habit makes me always put it there while I sit here and I dont have to worry about plugging in/out a cable every time I charge it(as long is I sit by my desk for about 2 hours or more per day, which I usually do).

I've never understood the hype behind wireless charging. I mean, what's the point of making something wireless? Removing the inconveniences of an easily tanglable wire and allowing for a more free and fluid range of movement. But if your phone has to stay in the same place the whole time then what's the point? If anything, a wireless charger hinders you even more cause you basically can't use your phone at all if you're planning to do anything that requires movement.

jonah travisano how long has he had his phone for? What iPhone is it? All these are factors.
I don't see why these induction coils are so expensive. I made one as a college project years ago, cost me 15 bucks. Most expensive part was the pcb and surprisingly the heatshrink tubes (they only sold them in 200 piece packs).
Wireless is a cool futuristic idea but more inconvenient than just plugging the thing
“Wireless” chargers have literally zero benefit over a wired charger
I use my wireless charger as a night stand. I plop my Note 9 onto it at night and its on my desk. It serves as a clock for me, I may wake up in the middle of the night to search for the time, and just look at my desk and since my phone has an Always On Display the clock is shown all night. So... uh, its a clock for me. Again I have a cable box but the new ones from Spectrum no longer show the time on it. So the phone on the wireless charger will do.
@max salz no, it's not faster. Not even close.
You don’t have to worry about damaging your cord or it becoming unplugged accidentally in the middle of the night.
max salz so 30 watts < 7.5 or 10 watts where's the logice in that???
@max salz ah, makes sense.
2:25 is my WiFi for my laptop also not wireless? The router and modem have wires.
Nothing can be entirely wireless.
Especially on the inside.
Just take a look at us human, all wired up inside, same with technology.
Yes. Unless you use your laptop without having a physical contact with your router.
The difference is that it has alot more range
30W warp charge on my 7 Pro is awesome. I do miss Qi from my iPhone XS but I love my 7 Pro so much more.
Wireless charging is great. My cables always start tearing after a while. Wireless charger forced me to use it less and let it charge. Love it.
Its not wireless, even the charger is connected to a cord. “True” wireless charging would be you walk into a room and and your phone starts charging automatically.
I noticed right away when I got a wireless charger.. damn I cant really use it while I'm charging now? It's cool tech but not practical in the end 🤷♂️
Pick it up and use it then put it back down lol
@@josholiver8833 I never put it down mwahaha
As it's a rather new technology, it feels more like a gimmick to me rather than the 'next big step in mobile technology'...
There are wireless chargers out there where it fits at the back of your phone perfectly and you can easily pick it up together with your phone and use your phone as usual. Look up iWalk Portable Charger.
I bought a couple cheap 10w ones and they work great, seems to charge fast and I never have to look for a cable end... I just put it on for 20 minutes and I am back in business.
shocked that it wasn't mentioned that inductive chargers are around half as efficient.
Why hasn't it taken off?
Cuz the other 71% like me are broke af 😂
you can buy them for like $10 at walmart.
Good talking point for sure, beyond that. This video was kinda corny...
Thinking to myself how this video aged well as I sit here charging my 5000mah phone in 20 minutes on a AIRVOOC wireless rapid charger with a cell phone case. LOL
What? how much did it cost?
@@Rowid04like $70 usd
And we all still wonder why Tesla's archives and notebooks vanished after his passing. His tower of power worked until his financial backers found out that he wanted to supply electricity at a distance for free. Thanks Morgan & Westinghouse.
00:43 No, the 12W Galaxy wireless charger isn't slower than that 5W iPhone charger.
"Untangled" nice one
I think the author missed a key point, which is less wear and tear on the USB port. Especially the USB-C ports used in most devices today; those things hold a death grip on the cable and can be very tough to remove. Several friends of mine struggled so much that over time it cracked the solder between the board and USB-C port, rendering the phone useless. Wireless charging is definitely a huge step in the right direction.
What about for micro usb ports??
I laught so hard when you mention airpod joke. LOL
Vi Gd *laughed *mentioned :)
2:04 Thank you
I been waiting for someone to say this.
It’s basically the same as plugging ur phone into a charger and setting it down and it charges faster, what is even the point of wireless charging
It is in my case, although admittedly I'm more of an exception to the rule - my male connector in my S8's charging port is knackered & as my S8 is now out of warranty the cost of repair, postal costs & inconvenience of being without my baby ... sorry phone I mean ... far outweighs the cost of a cheap wireless charger!
I got a free Samsung dual wireless charger when I bought my galaxy watch, the fast charge point isn’t as fast as a cable, but it easily charges my phone to 100% in at most an hour, depending obviously on how low the battery is when I drop the phone, which is still pretty damn good. The second charging point, mainly designed for the watch is standard, it will charge my watch to full in less than an hour from 0%.
At work I use my phone a lot so I have to plug it in with a wire which then gets me to 100% or at least a good enough level to last me until I go to bed, the only issue I’ve had is with the second charge point, my watch has to be directly on top of it and if I miss it or bump it during the night (which apparently happens sometimes) my watch doesn’t charge and it ends up dying during the day...
I did a while back buy a cheap, cradle style wireless charger which wouldn’t charge my phone through its thin cover vertically, but would charge it if I placed it horizontally, which was really disappointing. My other half on the other hand doesn’t put covers on his phone, so he used the charger and didn’t have any issues, he also doesn’t use his phone that much so the slower charging wasn’t an issue.
Over all I love my wireless charger, it works well. The only thing I think needs to be worked on is either improving the range so the device doesn’t have to be placed directly on the spot, or maybe placing magnets in the devices so when the are dropped the will either self align or be held in place. Magnets will also make it easier to find the sweet spot as you will be able to feel the lock.
I have been wirelessly charging my Note 5 for a year. It is super convenient for night charging, not having to search for a cord in the dark. When ever I'm charging my phone I usually am doing something else anyways so using it is not a problem.
the dislikes came from the wireless charging companies
And me
Samsung s6 THE S6 FROM 2015 HAS WIRELESS CHARGER THAT IS NOT A NEW PHONE
Samsung fast chargers work for everyone (will just use the highest the phone can take it is only Google that limits it)
Nokia Lumia have that in 6 or 5 year back I think
You forgot to mention the lifespan of wireless chargers. Yes they are expensive but it's the last charger you'll ever have to buy, because they don't wear out like the cables do.
Long time Qi charger user here. Only 0:35 is the problem. 0:42 Not a problem because the phone spends most of it's time charging. 1:04 is just false and magnetic clips for alignment exist. 1:59 Not a problem because the phone is always close to full when you pick it up for a call or something. 2:22 Not a problem because the wire to the pad does not need to be reconnected often and is neatly tucked away.
What I would love to see, is a unit that sits in your car, charging your phone, but even better, powers up a dash cam, so I don't have to have a wire running to it. (Not that it is bad, but would just be nice.)
I haven't watched the video but here's my take on wireless changing.
1. It costs extra money to buy a wireless charging pad.
2. If my cable is working why should I opt for wireless charging.
3. Charging speed is slow than cable
4. With current technology, you still need to connect a cable to the "wireless" charging pad in order to power it to charge your phone.
So therefore I find wireless charging technology useless rn unless if they somehow make it actually wireless or the speed is same as cable or they give wireless charging pad inside the box like the latest xiaomi mi mix
I got a fast wireless charger at work and a slow €5 IKEA wireless charger at home and I basically never have to worry charging the phone. I just place it on top of the wireless charger when I'm not using it. I do have a power bank (with wireless charger) in case I'm away from either places for too long.
I have a wireless charger built in on my pc monitor. So everytime I am working I lay my phone on the charger instead besides me and it simply loads. I dont have to look for the cable all the time and it still is loading. It is just easy. And you know what? I still use loading cables when I have to be mobile. Wireless chargers are truly wireless when they are integrated into something like cars, tabled, monitors, etc. And it is the best and convenient thing ever to load your phone passively.
