No one seems to mention the awesomeness of Maynard holding that last note on “did it all for yooooouuuuuu…” right through Billy & Paz layering over it. He holds that (including the downshift) for 17 seconds. It isn’t “The Grudge” level, but it’s a reminder that Maynard could just bring it. And yes, Paz tying up her hair in the break is super badass. 😂
I was about to say the same thing. Of all the reactions to this song that I've watched only a few reactors even mention how long he holds that "yell?" "scream?" whatever it's called, and even fewer appreciate it to the degree it deserves.
In the DVD commentary for this song Maynard explains that this is aimed at members or the "Congregation" that told his mother if she had been more devote this wouldn't have happened. He also says "I'm not saying F@ck the actual GOD", but the God of the members that treated his mother that way. Love your channel
Maynard is an absolute genius and you really have to listen to all of his bands to get the full scope of that. I love seeing the comments and others who understand this. I see you!
I think it's less that Maynard was pissed at god specifically but more the idea that his Mother was still such a believer even while she was in so much pain from her Illness. If I remember correctly, in some interview he did he spoke how she would say things like "I just need to pray more" and it ate him up.
Yeah I am pretty sure he doesn't actually believe per say. Wings for Marie was his way of showing his appreciation for her being, not faithful, but being a good person til the end regardless of what happened to her. I also think that it's his way of praising her and speaking about her the way she would've wanted in a way. She was a better person than phony religious people who only pretend to be good because they are thinking they are going to hell, if not and others who pretend to be religious just to tear other people down basically.
@@daks8888 Religion will lead a lot of people straight to hell. Jesus was not a religious person and if you follow his true example, you won't be either.
This. And he is upset with her for seeming to stay loyal to a congregation that treats her sickness like a punishment for some lack of faith she must have had. When he says "he did this to you" it isn't out of an actual belief that some cosmic being made her sick. He is telling her what her own church members were saying. James Hetfield from Metallica experienced a similar kind of conflict with a mother who belonged to one of those goofy sects that reject modern medicine and push "faith" healing instead. It prompted the song "The God That Failed" which I have always found very thematically similar to Judith.
I'd call myself a believer and this song never troubled me. You hit the nail on the head that Maynard was on a journey and was processing this emotion in this song. You're spot on that it isn't the end of the story. I bought this album shortly after it came out and I loved this song musically and vocally how it interweaves such a robust, powerful impact audibly. my mother suffered and died from a 10+ year battle with breast cancer, early on she had her faith shook and I turned away from the church as prayer never changed her suffering. When this song came out I instantly related to the reckoning he came to face between life and death and how we want what is best for the ones we love but can sometimes have zero control over, and the subsequent anger that was evoked by my own suffering in grief.
just spot on. This one spoke to me on a personal level about my journey. Nothing to do with God just I'm in the exact same spot in my journey. Thank you 🥹 and also I saw this song live & the feeling in the building was indescribable! all that emotion flowing out of 20,000 people together!
Just wanted to add one thing you didn’t know about the song, Maynard felt so powerfully about this song that it has the one and only expletive on the entire album giving it a parental advisory warning
Yeah, the parental advisory logo has nothing to do with Maynard. It's just an arbitrary thing record labels voluntarily put on albums at the time. There are albums that have more swearing on them than Mer De Noms that don't have a PA logo. Hell, Nevermind by Nirvana has the same amount of swearing, even the same word, and it doesn't have a PA logo. Generally, one swear word didn't result in a PA logo. It was likely the label (APC signed to a different label than Tool) being squeamish about the subject matter of the song itself rather than him saying any one word. Like back then, corporations were weird about offending Christians. Like if a song said "god damn", the radio would take out "god" but not "damn".
I don't know the stories behind it, but 10,000 days is one of the very few albums where every song is great, and I swear it's meant to be played in full rather than individual songs which all still stand on their own
Thank you. I lost my Momma/best friend to cancer just months ago. You just helped me understand that it's ok to 'allow' myself this anger and loneliness and sadness and understand it's only a point in time and 'this too shall pass'. Thank you.
Its my understanding that Maynard was angry that his mother had suffered a stroke which left her in a wheelchair, and couldn't understand how she remained steady in her faith in God. Maynard is a wine grower, and scattered his mom's ashes in his vineyard. He named that crop of wine "Judith" after his mom. He stated on a documentary that his mother always wanted to travel - and with her ashes part of that wine's make up, she gets to travel the world. Absolutely beautiful to me!
I loved this song when it first came out, especially the opening verse of "You are such an inspiration for the ways I will never ever choose to be...". One of the lessons that my mother would tell my brother & I is that it was just as important to know what we don't want to be as it was to know what we want to be.

I can’t understand why nobody talks about the final, heartbreaking song that could close this arc of Maynard’s relationship with his mother. Passive by A Perfect Circle was released a year before 10,000 Days, and it’s so painful in this context. You should give it a listen
This song shakes me to my core. I had a mother with DID among other things. Her endless faith with all of her abuse and other things she actually believed she deserved it all. Faith can help or harm, and often at the same time.
Thanks for covering more Maynard 💯 apc- Magdalena,3Libras, hollow, passive , etc. You can't go wrong he makes no bad songs... also there's always sirens ringing in the background, lol
side notes - guitarist Troy Van Leeuwen left APC and has been in Queens of the Stoneage since 2007 and drummer Josh Freese just joined the Foo Fighters to replace Taylor Hawkins.
Josh is one of my favorite drummers. (I am a drummer) I saw APC along with Primus and Puscifer a few months ago, and I was so excited that Josh was touring with them. But the night I saw the show, he had already rejoined the Foo Fighters for their tour! I was so sad........at first. Puscifers drummer - Gunnar Olsen - filled in and knocked it out of the park. He got a new fan that night!!
Oh yeah, I've loved Josh since the 90s when he was in the Vandals. I didn't make the connection that he was also in many other bands until much later, but I love them all!
Maynard is just plain incredible on so many levels, singer of three bands, winemaker who actually goes and does all the working of planting and earthwork of the grapes/vines etc., oversight of it all and warming at it, his creativity in sooo many ways! Simply phenomenal!
I am so glad that you did this one. It's about his mother and her faith. He also has a vineyard and there is a wine there called Judith in a spot where he planted grapes in the soil with his mothers ashes.
I don’t know if he still doesn’t, but for a while there, Maynard stopped playing Judith in concerts cuz his mom had asked him not to. I always have found that fascinating and it’s another layer that helps make sense of their relationship.
I love the way they show the harmonies in this video! And like others mentioned Paz tying her hair up in perfect timing is badass & hot lol and I think you completely got the message here. I’m believer and still love this jam 🙌🤘💯🖤
My mother in law passed 5 days ago after nearly a 2 year battle with cancer, she was VERY Catholic, and kept her faith. This song came to mind, as i saw what she was going through
Please more APC.....LOVE IT!!!! Also hi....first time commenting on one of your videos and that is a shame as I have been loving them! Keep up the amazing work.
This song warmed up building during the concert. He said this is cold as balls here so lets do this and bam🎉 it was beyond the concert. The passion was IMMENSE, a religious like experience.
Maynards songs really do show the healing process in real time. He pours his heart into his craft. "Didn't choke on lie" and "Its not like you killed someone!" are referred back to in wings for marie. "Didn't tell a lie, Never took a life but surely saved one!". The end of the story is "You were my witness my eyes my evidence Judith Marie unconditional one!". How many people have listened to his work and found help from these songs inspired by Judith. Jimmy, Judith, The Patient, Wings for Marie. God works in mysterious ways! Judith had the strength to bear her burdens. Maynard didn't understand that until later. Now i know he is glad she had Jesus and she blessed us in a way she'll never know.
@@soapy42 "Set as i am on my ways and my arrogance, Burden of proof tossed upon the believer, You were my witness, My eyes and my evidence, Judith Marie unconditional one!" "Repugnant is a creature who would squander the ability to lift an eye to heaven conscious of it fleeting time here!" Don't project your bias on his beliefs. Maynard has pretty much said he is a private person and his beliefs are his. He has been critical however of organized religion full of hypocrites in the church. Being sceptical of traditional religious institutions doesn't make you not religious. Besides, I never said he believed in the church. I said he is glad she had Jesus. Wings for Marie was almost apologetic.
Just found you. Music to Improve Your Mindset? Sounds right up my alley. Listening to Judith... hitting me in my earlobes is the fastest way to my heartstrings. Rock on. Keep doing what you do, just subbed, liked, and thanks. EDIT: OMG - you research and know what is going on with the band... you are family now.
I love how we all got to watch Maynard evolve through the same trauma as we lived ourselves and it helped us move through this life in a healthy way and not lose our sht because he provided us with an outlet that wasn't negative and detrimental to our mental health and now we're a productive member of society doing good things in life that are positive...amirite?
Yep, this was definitely during the "anger" stage of his grief. Perhaps without fully embracing and expressing that emotion, he never would have been able to grow beyond it, as he shows he has to some degree in "10,000 Days."

I can’t understand why nobody talks about the final, heartbreaking song that could close this arc of Maynard’s relationship with his mother. Passive by A Perfect Circle was released a year before 10,000 Days, and it’s so painful in this context. You should give it a listen
Orestes, 3 Libras and By and Down The River are my fave APC songs 🔥
So glad you this song ! Love your reactions 🙏🤗
This is one of the best rock songs ever written.
Beautiful song about his mother
Best album ever made! (3 Libras) by them is a great 1 for a therapist.
OMG - I’ve been wanting you to do this song since you did Wings For Marie - thank you!
One correction I’m fairly sure Troy was part of QOTSA earlier, he was seen in the Go With The Flow vid and that was around 2003 iirc.
he's been in qotsa since 2003!
I didn't make the connection that he was also in many other bands until much later, but I love them all!
sonically one of the best ever 🤌
Maynard is just plain incredible on so many levels, singer of three bands, winemaker who actually goes and does all the working of planting and earthwork of the grapes/vines etc., oversight of it all and warming at it, his creativity in sooo many ways! Simply phenomenal!
I've been waiting for you to do this song! You're my favorite!
Another song on the album about is relationship with his mom is Orestes. A must listen.
Agreed! Orestes is another great song.
I'd recommend the Live at Red Rocks version of Orestes
And "Jimmy"...
@@b.l.fisher8230 Taylor has seen/listened to Jimmy
I am so glad that you did this one. It's about his mother and her faith. He also has a vineyard and there is a wine there called Judith in a spot where he planted grapes in the soil with his mothers ashes.
I don’t know if he still doesn’t, but for a while there, Maynard stopped playing Judith in concerts cuz his mom had asked him not to. I always have found that fascinating and it’s another layer that helps make sense of their relationship.
I saw a clip of APC playing it at a festival earlier this year, but I also heard that about the song.
For a while they were doing just the remix version. Saw them for sesanta and I believe it was the original. With original line up
They played it at Red Rocks in 2018 when my wife and I were there. I was shocked that they actually played it.
They brought it back on the last tour. I was lucky enough to hear it live.
They did in Arizona (2019), such a badass moment when those drums kicked in
I love the way they show the harmonies in this video! And like others mentioned Paz tying her hair up in perfect timing is badass & hot lol and I think you completely got the message here. I’m believer and still love this jam 🙌🤘💯🖤
Seeing your face while you listened to this jam 100% got you this subscription. Keep feeling music, not just listen to it.
My mother in law passed 5 days ago after nearly a 2 year battle with cancer, she was VERY Catholic, and kept her faith.
This song came to mind, as i saw what she was going through
He did it all for yooooooooooooooooooooooooou! That last one is about as epic as it gets.
Saw them on the tour for this album. One word. EPIC
We love so much Paz ❤❤❤
Paz is a beautiful human being ❤❤
LOVED this analysis! Thank you Tay-Tay!
Please more APC.....LOVE IT!!!! Also hi....first time commenting on one of your videos and that is a shame as I have been loving them! Keep up the amazing work.
Got too see them in Vegas at the hard rock when I was 15.
Got to see Tool in Vegas when I was 37
Incredible
Paz is so amazing❤️❤️❤️❤️ outstanding bass player and plays an amazing violin!!!!!!!
My absolute all time favorite song!
You will NEVER hear him perform this song without 110 percent emotional energy....ever
This song warmed up building during the concert. He said this is cold as balls here so lets do this and bam🎉 it was beyond the concert. The passion was IMMENSE, a religious like experience.
i was waiting to see this one.
Maynard has no respect for religion. Don't put your bias into his beliefs.
As far as music videos go, it doesn't get much closer to perfection than this.
I never leave this sort of comment on a TH-cam video, but holy cow, this woman is so, so beautiful. Smart, too!
Would be interesting if you keep analyzing Tool Songs , but start doing it for A Perfect Circle’s ones as well!
