"The rhythm that these guys have is a collective rhythm that demonstrates their experiential outcome from allowing the collective unconscious to actually manifest itself in, and through them." -This is the most succinctly accurate explanation of Tool's music I've ever heard. I love it when someone with your intellectual awareness listens to their music, you are the epitome of what every Tool fan hopes for when we play their music to our friends who just start talking about their new shoes 10 seconds into the song because they can't figure out how to bob their head to it.
As the story goes, this is a song about Maynard's friend that the judge threw the book at on possession of Marijuana knowing dang well it wasn't even his. And to top it off, that judge was later disbarred in a host of reasons including possession of many things including Marijuana.
@pnshr88 No Offense my fellow Tool Fan.. As a Fellow Tool Fanatic myself and someone who's taken very deep dives into all of Maynards lyrics please hear me out here. The Pot seems to be one of The Very Few songs that Maynard has allowed us to interpret as fans the way we see fit. Even though his Lyrics for The Pot are very Straight Forward with a Very Clear Message to everyone else lts again one of the Very Few songs he's Never spoken about publicly. Again no offense as he seems to have given permission for all of us to interpret it for ourselves Your attempt to makes shit up as if it's the True Meaning is just that making that shit up. Fuck the rest Much Love and Respect to All Tool Fans Please Stay Safe and Stay Strong my Friends. Peace ✌🏽!!
While he does say "ganja, please" you are absolutely correct it's one of the usual Tool misdirects. I think "high" is more a reference to "on your high horse", to go with "house of cards"/"glass houses and throwing stones"/"pot calling the kettle black"/"kangaroo courts" and just plain being ill-informed while accusing others of being wrong. The mirror bit is about introspection and making sure you're not the liar trying to lawyer your way out of things with logic fallacies and bad information. Most people that are angry at another for being a certain way actually are afraid of being that themselves or have their own issues internally that they can't stand to see in the world. Try to control the outside because they feel helpless to control themselves. Which is a form of being high on your own supply. And then lemon juice was used by actors to effect tears in scenes where they needed to appear to cry, and "shades of cozened indigo" are deceptive levels of acting sad (blue) for another, false empathy, virtue signalling. All of which usually comes with those that are up on their high horse acting better than those they are emotionally bullying.
I think it’s about a lot of things, but one big one is the war on drugs. But also other similar issues where politicians play at morality for political reasons, crying “think of the children!”, or whatever.
I have always suspected that he is using a most subtle double entendre here. It seems like he bends those words in such as way that: Mirror for ya = Mere Euphoria, which adds a layer in how I feel this line. The people in positions of power do it for the mere euphoria... a kind of mindless pleasure you get from lording things over people. It wouldn't be the only time Maynard has done this sort of bendy thing with pronunciation. I've quite certain "Pushit on me" is meant to sound like "Put Shit on me". Which again subtly deepens the impact of the line. And even more extreme in Prison Sex. If you listen to it, sure does sound like he says "Release inside of me". But if you read the lyrics it says "Release in Sodomy". Both shocking. But one is technically shocking, and the other is emotionally shocking. If anyone else has noticed this, please confirm! I feel like I'm a nutter, but nevertheless, I can see it no other way.
Maynard James Keenan is a Renaissance Man. I believe he'll be talked about in history. A rare artist that only comes around once in a life time. I'm 63 so I would know. Tool hits different during different phases of life and I reinterpret the lyrics as I've had different life experiences. Timeless.
Yours is, by far the very best interpretation of this song. Not sure if you actually did this on the fly, or if you, like myself, have been listening to this song regularly for more than a decade. Nonetheless, you hit the nail on the head with the interpretation I have formed over the years. "When you piss all over my black kettle"...to me, is saying "I know I have flaws, and see that I am nowhere near perfect, the difference is I am not some self-righteous, blame-shifting, judgemental pot--calling the kettle black." Excellent work, good sir.
I love my tool people! It's so refreshing to read these comments and see that everyone here has legitimate intelligence. Everyone here knows that if you truly love Tool then having a highly developed mentality is essential to fully grasp everything you're hearing from them. You guys are all awesome!!
That weird higher noise during the break is actually Justin on the bass, if you didn't realize. It's neat how the bass takes the role of the guitar in a lot of Tool songs, Justin plays a lot of solos instead Adam, flipping the script on the guitar doing it instead.
This album came out in 2006, about a year after Hurricane Katrina. The "Eyeballs deep in muddy water" always made me think it referred to Bush and the reaction to Katrina. I'm pretty sure I've heard that connection made many times since.
I always thought this was about duplicitous politicians. All of their songs have a way of double meanings…the obvious and the deeper metaphorical…and it always fits.
The Pot… “pot calling the kettle black”. It’s an old saying. Don’t point your finger at me without looking at yourself. You pissed on my kettle while you’re a pot. Both items are the same thing by different names. The hypocrisy theme you mentioned.
I always got the impression that Judges and juries put people in jail for weed, then they go home and use themselves. Not so much now because it’s legal in most states.
All 3 are great, especially live but for me Tool evokes raw emotion deep inside my soul. It’s been nearly 30 yrs 😵💫 since I discovered their music yet they’ve remained my favorite band of all time.
Rhythm, Doc? They've got "polyrhythm". Also, taking "moral blindness" with me (not that you need any help proving your point.) Thanks for seeing me, Doc.
I’d like to hear this guys experience relating to Stinkfist. He must have some thoughts on desensitization. I’m of the belief that becoming desensitized isn’t good but it’s not bad either. It has its usefulness just like anything else, if acquired in moderation or responsibly. Like everything else it has a cost. I know it has a cost to obtain, but I don’t know what it actually is. It’s just a feeling mostly. It feels like we lose something precious to acquire it. It’s unfortunate to gain and sad to witness.
@MusicHealsHQ Okay. Maybe qualified for that one person. Maybe not. Qualification requires a certain degree of self-awareness and freedom from automatonic defense mechanisms.
Hello just found your channel and found it quite enjoyable and how you help explain things in a manner that is understandable and useful. Is it possible for you to react to the song Devils Point by Wicked Shallows
I believe "mirror show me, what's the difference" is an allusion to the magic mirror in Snow White where the queen would always ask the magic mirror questions and it had to answer truthfully.
I think it's more he's telling you to look in the mirror: are you a liar or lawyer? No, your both. Its more of an actual response instead of a question. While i understand the connection with your analogy, i feel like maynard is saying that you already know what you really are, the mirror isnt going to tell you any different. Just know what you are: a hypocrite.
Thanks for the reaction. maybe its time to yuxtapose the Mer de Noms album of A Perfect Circle. It fix well, when you all ready do The Pot reaction. Thanks for your content.
There are references to weed throughout, but its biggest theme is derived from the pot calling the kettle black, and it is about the injustice shown to that community (often tied to something as relatively innocuous as weed) in the form of judges and juries who probably smoke weed, too, or do coke or pills... There's a lot of stuff going on in the wordplay. You got a lot of it.
This song is about a judge who was throwing the book at people cought with weed well the judge was a heroin junkie .... i love your tool videos bro would love if you did intolerance by tool
I find with Tool all 4 members can go off on their own timing You need to pick 1 and rock that one groove the fun part is switching members Having just turned 60 i grew up and worship the rock gods Rush Sabbath Zep Floyd ect.Tool took bits from all them and stepped it up to this organic machine that will blow your mind but never over do it They own you while you listen to them And i take a ride every time i hear them
The Pot, for me, is about the "War on Drugs" by the Reagan administration. A review was commissioned by him into the dangers of "various" drugs due to the growing cocaine issues and cartel power in the U.S.A. The independent commission made it absolutely clear marijuana was less addictive than tobacco, less socially harmful than alcohol, or cocaine, the main drug of the request. The "kangaroo done hung the guilty with the innocent" refers to Reagan deciding a "mixed message" (r.e. nuanced) where he said "cocaine is bad, but marijuana isn't" was too complex. There is also the fact it would have been too easy for Americans to grow it, and it couldn't be taxed, it would have hemorrhaged the alcohol and tobacco industries. That's why the song is called "The Pot" - it is all about the cartoonish and bad reasons for the illegalisation of marijuana.
The basic premise of hypocrisy is pretty clear, and is a good message in itself. I like to overanalyze, though, so I'm going to do that here. I've seen people say that it is about the hypocrisy of the legal system in regard to nonviolent drug crimes. Some people have suggested it was directed at Led Zeppelin, seemingly because TOOL covered No Quarter, and this song says "Eyeballs deep in Muddy Waters...". I also know that Willie Dixon sued Led Zeppelin for using lyrics from Muddy Waters' "You Need Love" for "Whole Lotta Love", as he was the writer of the original. Interestingly, the only time I can find that TOOL was accused of plagiarism was when Kurt Cobain called TOOL's Sober video "a shameless rip-off" of the Quay Brothers. Though, it feels more like an inspiration, akin to the songs that Nirvana drew from for some of their riffs or drumming. ====Lyrical Interpretation==== "Eyehole deep in muddy waters", "Eyeballs deep in muddy waters, Your balls deep in muddy waters" seems like an obvious connection to the earlier mentioned Willie Dixon v Led Zeppelin, but also that one is in deep trouble but can't even see it. "You practically raised the dead" comes right after the first Muddy Waters line, I don't have much for this one other than possibly the accusation makes the accused role their eyes to the point where they look like a zombie. "Rob the grave to snow the cradle" Snow has an informal definition of "mislead or charm (someone) with elaborate and insincere words" that makes this seem to mean take (something) from the past and convince those too young to know better that it was yours. "Steal, borrow, refer, save your shady inference" could be saying not to throw accusations without understanding the process used by the accused. "Kangaroo done hung the juror with the innocent" and "Kangaroo done hung the guilty with the innocent" - A rigged, or otherwise unjust court case declaring something a crime at the harm of both the accused and the average citizen. Cozen means to "trick or deceive" or "to obtain by deception." Indigo has been associated with "Profound thought, wisdom, devotion, trust, and justice," as well as "leadership and sacred significance." depending on the source. That would mean that "weeping shades of cozened indigo" could be interpreted as pretending to be harmed to gain a sense of legal or moral correctness on one's stance. "Got lemon juice up in your eye" reinforces the false injustice narrative, while also adding a bit of 'you did it to yourself' to it. "Liar, lawyer; mirror show me, what's the difference?" Continues both the legal theme and deception for gain. I believe that all the references to cannabis are primarily to sell that the accuser is not acting in a sober state of being, i.e. lacking clarity of mind. I like what you said about a "moral intoxication" though. ====SPECULATION BEYOND THIS POINT==== I just did some reading and timeline comparison and I think it might be directed toward TOOL's former artist Cam De Leon. The Pot was released in 2006. Cam De Leon filed a lawsuit against TOOL in 2005, along with Hot Topic and Sony BMG Entertainment. I don't know the full details, but from what I can gather in a short amount of time is that TOOL was approached by Hot Topic to release exclusive merchandise, somewhere along the way it came up that the art may not have been TOOL's to use in that manner without offering more compensation to Cam De Leon. I imagine it was likely a wording issue in whatever contract the band signed with Cam De Leon, as "An insurance company that Tool thought would defend it against lawsuits turned around and sued the band over technicalities regarding the case." - Rolling Stones, 2014. All that said, TOOL eventually won in March 2015. I have seen very few details about the case that did not come from members of the band, but the timing is the main reason I think this is the 'personal' meaning behind the song. I could be entirely wrong though and encourage anyone who knows more to chime in.
Don't let TOOL "extra-nerdy" fans get you into their pit (despite loving nerdy subjects myself). Some of them just get stucj over-analyzing too much and forget how to just enjoy good overall quality music (and TOOL are very, very good at it).
