Male psychologist here.. I grew up on this music and believe an entire generation found solitude in the emotional expression of all the pain and distress their parents had no words or tools for. Drugs, divorce, death, we had no way to cope and no online communities. These metal artists SOAD, Slipknot, Korn, gave us a conduit to express the emotion we didn't even know we had. I'll forever be grateful for the connection I felt through headphones sitting in the dark alone..

@@Rogers_Ranger We all miss something. Even the most balanced of upbringings and emotional subtstance can sometimes not offer what you need. I can see your question, however, we all miss something. And this music found a way into the hearts of some of us, and spoke truth in a way that was alien to whatever we had at hand at the time.I feel completely what @jessebahrke was saying. Some people need an avenue to be awoken from, and sometimes that comes trough music.

Interesting you associate SoaD, S/K and Korn - to me they are totally different. S/K I can only manage one cover version, because the cover artist does it better. My brother raves to me about Korn - but they miss me somewhere, not over the top I am sure. SoaD are great though.

This song was so controversial that the label refused to use the original name of “suicide” which forced the band to change the name to their favorite Chinese fast food. By the next year it was the most requested song on the biggest rock station in America

Yes. The band wanted to call the song "suicide" but it was deemed to be too negative. They chopped "suicide" down to "Sui"........ chopped sui............chop suey.

I always find it amazing how much music can convey a message that carries over through time. A song that I related to as a senior in high school was (showing my age) still resounds with the same message decades later. Music is powerful when depth of the message is paired with the context of a lived experience.

I always assumed the "Father why have you forsaken me?" was from the Gospel of Matthew, rather than the Psalm that you referred to, it was when Jesus is on the cross and yells, "My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?" Many people call God the Father, and I think the whole martyrdom tie in fits with the songs message, but that's just my opinion.

"Erratic" might be the best description I've heard of this song and it applies to a lot of great songs. That factor makes it very relatable and cathartic to people who are suffering from and/or work with depression. Calm can lead to chaos and chaos can lead to calm and there is no real warning for either state of mind.
This song isn't about depression directly though. It's a story of a drug addict OD'ing. A good person with a problem and how people will look down of people who OD and not giving a single thought to the person it actually happened to. But obviously most drug abuse is connected to mental issues and escaping the reality they can't deal with.
"I cry when angels 'deserve' to die".

Chop Suey! by System of a Down based of this verse from the bible
    Mark 15:34 In-Context
34 And at three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).

It’s almost like alternative music addresses the reality of the human condition in all its crazy forms 🤔
Human expression through music when it’s real touches us. Alternative music is made in the large part by people that deeply feel that battle between the light and dark. Be it traumatic experiences , substance abuse issues or generally experiencing emotional pain more than “regular” folk. That’s why it’s so relatable and offers people going through a difficult time something that’s says ‘I know that pain’
It’s great that you have found this out. Music as part of therapy should be a more commonly practised thing

As someone who has had mental health demons for a long time (I'm ok. I wasn't for a long time but I understand myself well enough to manage my lows) the juxtaposition of constant hiding of what you feel with the moments of crying out for help is very real. The lengths I would go to be the funny and outgoing centre of the world so no-one would expect me to be in such a dark place. Only to leave hints to the world... It was like screaming for help into a pillow so no-one would notice.... To anyone that does feel that way I wish you the best. It gets easier. If it's not getting easier please either get help you definitely deserve or at the very least try something new to break the cycle of self abuse. I focused on my strengths rather than my shortcomings (and found an amazing partner in life helped). I'm still self-conscious about my shortcomings. But they're easier to swallow if you see what you do well. Be well all

I am a 57 year old male from the Netherlands. I am in therapy for an eating disorder (binge eating). 1 full day a week. And as I have been told: the eatingdisorder is the tip of the iceberg. Now that is under controle, the rest of the iceberg comes above the surface. At 57 for the first time autisme is mentioned and it seems I have had braindamage at around 10 years old (big carcrash, lost concisiousness for about 20 minutes). I have learned to work around my issues, but now it all seems to go wrong. At times I have suicidale thoughts, my head is often a big mess, at times I break down. The song Chop Suey resonates with me. It makes so much sence. I hope the therapy brings me what I need (I am in good hands, I know that, but it is still difficult). Musicwise I switch between happy songs and very dark songs. I needed to get this down in a reaction: it helps in my dark moments. Best wishes

SOD has done such a wonderful job with this song, so much emotion, so much power. And so raw. I am really happy that we can connect on this.
You have been through so much in life. Going through something like a brutal car accident can have such a big impact on someones life. It can change things forever. Living with undiagnosed things can create huge challenges in life. They feel cruel and unjust. But from what you've said, I can tell you are an extremely resilient person. You possess the skills to overcome life's greatest challenges. And I am so proud of you for that. I am very happy to hear that you are in good hands with therapy. That can make a world of difference. I also battle with a binge eating disorder and had great support which allowed me to overcome. It is still incredibly hard. But I believe in you. And we are here for you at HS. I dunno what it is, but at times when iv been really depressed, iv really liked to listen to some depressing shit.
Which made me feel better somehow.
I have a recommendation for a band for some of you, its a bit niche, as the band is screaming in angst in swedish 😅. But some of the lyrics are really creativly poetic but depressing. But the you kind of feel comfort anyway. Best line is "En kraftig överdos av personliga problem( A strong overdose of personal problems"
Band is called Lifelover, but most of the stuff they do is in Swedish, its black metal. They have five albums
    called Pulver(Powder), Dekadens, Erotik,Konkurs(bankruptcy),Sjukdom(sickness).
Some of there best titles of songs are:
    M/s Salmonella
Kärlek, Becksvart Melankoli (Love, Pich black melancholy)
En man i sina värsta år (A man in his worst years)

You have to listen to Breathe by The Warning, live at the Pepsi Centre. The writer described it as a panic attack set to music. The song writer said she'd never play it live but it was such a special night she felt complelled to.

    Sometimes there is no strength,
    To get up and go,
And there is no one to help you on this path,
And there is no one to tell that everything will be fine,
That this is only the beginning, and at the beginning it is hard.
It is not easy to lift the weight of dropped hands,
Especially when a friend has betrayed you,
And every day turns into a furious battle,
And this is also a war, but a war with yourself.

Jesus screamed out on the cross just before he died, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabacthani?” which translated into English is “My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?” It’s in the gospel according to Matthew 27:46
