If you have more than one water-based serum, you can apply based on the priority of your concern. The product that targets the most important concern should go first.

My current routine for my combo/ dry skin is AM: cerave hydrating cleanser, vitamin C, and Neutrogena hydro boost gel moisturizer with 15 spf and I apply another sunscreen 30spf as a final step. PM: micellar water (if I’m wearing makeup), wash my face with cerave hydrating cleanser and I do this twice to ensure all makeup is off. Then I add a few drops of marine hyaluronic’s all over and then apply niacinamide and alpha Arbutin. I then apply the cerave cream (it’s a thicker consistency) all over my face, neck and chest area. Finally I apply some squalene oil and let that absorb. So far this is working great for my skin but I need toner recommendations and also a mist possibly since I have the Mario mist (I know it’s bad but I just wanna finish it now 😅). My concerns are mainly hyperpigmentation and skin dullness

    • @MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet

      Hey,😊 your routine sounds excellent!
For toners, I haven't tried that many toners and so far there was not a toner that I liked😅 I recently ordered the Paula's Choice ENRICHED CALMING TONER which I haven't tried since I'm still waiting for it to arrive😊
For a facial mist, I recommend the Avene Thermal Spring Water or the La Roche Posay Thermal Water.
For blackheads, I recommend a Salicylic acid solution/exfoliator such as the black one from Paula's Choice, which you also could only use on that specific area😊

If you have a Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid) product, you should not use it with The Ordinary Niacinamide since they may conflict. But you are OK to use Alpha Arbutin with Vitamin C and Niacinamide with Alpha Arbutin. If you have a Vitamin C serum, you can layer in any order and if you use a cream, use it as your last step.

    • @MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet
      @MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Generally, I would say Niacinamide is the better option since Alpha Arbutin is purely a brightening ingredient. Niacinamide also has other benefits see here:
      www.paulaschoice.com/expert-advice/skincare-advice/anti-aging-wrinkles/how-niacinamide-helps-skin.html
Glycolic Acid and Lactic Acid are both AHA's which do the same job. Usually, Lactic Acid is better tolerated from my experience.
You can read more about them here:
      www.paulaschoice.de/en/all-about-exfoliants
It's the same information for The Ordinary; just Paula's Choice explains it much better and in a simple way :)

      Hello 😀
"If you have more than one water-based serum, you can apply based on the priority of your concern (the product that targets the most important concern should go first). And it’s recommended applying eye-serums (such as Caffeine Solution 5% + EGCG) first after cleansing.
It’s recommended using no more than 3 serum formulations in a single routine for optimal skin penetration.
About 2-3 drops of each serum and 1 pea-sized amount of creams should be enough for the full face and neck.
Always apply sunscreen when you are exposed to the sun!!"

Suppose you have dry skin, yes. There is no best moisturizer. But The Ordinary Natural Moisturizing Factors can work well. Or one that I like to use is Paula's Choice Omega + Moisturizer for normal to dry skin.
For oily skin, it's likely not needed; however, if you do feel the need use a light version such as Paula's Choice Water-Infusing Electrolyte Moisturizer or NIOD Hydration Vaccine.

Do you have the AHA + BHA peeling solution?
Have you already had a look at a Salicylic Acid solution or exfoliator (which can be used daily)? The Oridnary has one but it is currently not available. Another option would be the SA exfoliating solution from Paula's Choice or something similar because SA targets the following:
      - Oily skin
      - Sensitive skin
      - Breakouts and Blackheads
      - Rosacea-prone skin
      - Removes dead skin cells on the surface and in the pores
      - Combats breakouts, enlarged pores and blackheads
      - Anti-inflammatory properties
      - Not suitable if you’re allergic to aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid)
The general rule of thumb for order of application is:
      1. Water-based serums
      2. Anhydrous Solutions and Oil Formulations
      3. Creams & suspensions
      Important:
If you have more than one water-based serum, you can apply based on the priority of your concern (the product that targets the most important concern should go first).
And a maximum of three serum formulations in a single regimen.
Always apply sunscreen when you are exposed to the sun!!
      AM Routine Daily:
      - Cleanse
      - Niacinamide
      - Alpha Arbutin
      - Moisturiser
      - SPF
PM 1 Routine on the other days:
      - Cleanse
      - SA solution/exfoliator (Optional)
      - Retinol
      - Moisturiser
PM 2 Routine 1-2 times per week:

No, if you use more, it is not more effective. Only use it on the areas you need it to get the same effect with less product. If you use too much, it will only sit on the skin, and it may cause clogged pores.
I am not sure about this, but I have had the best experience with Ascorbic Acid and Alpha Arbutin.

Generally, you can do that. But I do often read in my comment section that twice a day is too much. So it depends on your skin. So start with once a day, see how that goes and if you feel the need try using it twice 😃 That's the best way to do it.

I ve been using the Ordinary Niacinamide since april as AM routine together with a moisturizer or sunscreen and as PM routine ive been using Bioderma white objective night serum (Vitamin C).
Ive recently purchased Alpha arbutin and Hyaluronic acid from the Ordinary and wanted to know if it can be used together with vitamin C (in PM routine) or is it enough to just use it in AM routine.
    Thank you! 🤗

Hello. I recommend using the Alpha Arbutin in the morning and evening. You have to be careful with the Hyaluronic Acid as it can get sticky very quickly when layering a few serums. I recommend using less maybe 1-2 drops. But generally speaking, you have to experiment and see what works best for you. They can be used in the same routine, yes. 😀

      AM

You may want to use them in the beginning only once per day (AM or PM) to see how your skin will react to it before using it morning and evening :)

I love the way you’re a always reminding your viewers to wash their faces before applying anything. Thanks for the video!
Oh, and I have a question. Can i just mix it up in my hands? Just in case i don’t have the time to layer it.
Thank you so much and have a good day!

You could try The Ordinary's Caffeine Solution or their new Multi-Peptide Eye Serum. Their effectiveness may vary depending on the cause of your dark circles.

hi! i got the niacinamide , the alpha arbutin, and hyaluronic acid, what order should i apply it in?

    • @MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet
      @MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hey🙂
Those 3 are all water-based serums so, If you have more than one water-based serum, you can apply based on the priority of your concern (the product that targets the most important concern should go first).

Hi! Can i use glycolic acid, alpha arbutin, niacinamide and hyaluronic acid together? For night time routine? Thanks 😊

    • @MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet
      @MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey :) Yes, that's fine!
      - Cleanser
      - Glycolic Acid
      - Hyaluronic Acid
      - Alpha Arbutin
      - Niacinamide
      - (Optional) Moisturiser
Keep in mind not using too much of each product so that the products can sink into the skin rather than sitting on top of it :) - Since you are using many water-based products!

Hi! First of all thank you for all those videos about the ordinary products, it helps a lot!
I have the alpha arbutin, lactic acid niacinamide, buffet and hyaluronic acid. I am a little lost. When do i apply the hyaluronic and buffet? Before the lactic acid or just after? Or do i use the lactic acid and the alpha arbutin and then i use the hyaluronic acid and/or byffet? I am so lost...
Another question btw, do you think it is safe to use the lactic acid every day? Thank you in advance for your answers, i really do need help💗

    • @MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet

The general rule of thumb for order of application is:
      1. Water-based serums
      2. Anhydrous Solutions and Oil Formulations
      3. Creams & suspensions
      Important:
If you have more than one water-based serum, you can apply based on the priority of your concern (the product that targets the most important concern should go first).
It’s recommended using no more than 3 serum formulations in a single routine for optimal skin penetration.
About 2-3 drops of each serum and 1 pea-sized amount of creams should be enough for the full face and neck.
Always apply sunscreen when you are exposed to the sun!!
      AM Routine:
      - Cleanse
      - Alpha Arbutin (Water-based Serum | Daily | AM and/or PM)
      - Buffet (Water-based Serum | Daily | AM and/or PM)
      - (Optional) Moisturiser
      - SPF
      PM Routine:
      - Cleanse
      - Lactic Acid (Water-based Serum | Daily |PM)
      - Hyaluronic Acid (Water-based Serum | Daily | AM and/or PM)
      - Niacinamide (Water-based Serum | Daily | AM and/or PM)
      - (Optional) Moisturiser
It is not recommended to use Buffet (- Peptide) in the same routine than Lactic Acid ( - Direct Acid).
You can use Lactic Acid daily or only a few times per week.
Also, gradually incorporating one new product into your regimen at a time and applying test patches first to see what works best for your skin.
With any new formulation, some sensitivity or initial redness can be normal. Initial redness upon application is not a cause for concern if it goes away after a few moments.
      Hope this helps🥰

Hii! I have hyperpigmentation and hyperpigmentation acne scars. (I have oily acne-prone skin)This is my routine what do you think I should add? This it in order.
    1. CeraVe Oily Skin Cleanser
    2. The Ordinary Niacinamide
    3. The Ordinary Alpha Arbutin
    4. CeraVe Moisturizer Lotion
    5. Cotz sunscreen

    • @MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet
      @MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet  4 ปีที่แล้ว

This looks great to me! I recommend keeping it simple before adding anything else and use it for 1-2 months until you can tell if it improved your skin or not.
But based on your concerns, that are the products I would go for!😊
Depending on how oily your skin is, you may find it a bit better without using a moisturiser and may replace it with a hydrating serum that has hyaluronic acid in it😊

Hi Melissa.. I have normal to dry skin. Can I use the ordinary Alpha Arbutin and niacinamide together?
I just bought this serum. Can I use on PM n AM? Can I skip the moisturizer n toner when I use that product?

    • @MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet
      @MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Hello 😃 Since you have dry skin, I do not recommend skipping the moisturizer. And yes, you can use it AM and PM :) But you need to adjust it accordingly to your skin response. So if you feel that twice a day is too much, reduce it to only once a day etc. :)

Alpha arbutin is often used to treat hyperpigmentation / irregular skin tone. However it takes quite long to see changes (at least 3 months) and most often, you wont need to apply it to the whole face, only certain areas (nose, cheekbone, eye area) Applying this product first and targeting these areas specifically, thus allowing it to penetrate first will give it a better chance of reaching the melanin irregularities deep within your skin and working on evening out the skin tone (without the niacinamide being in the way if you use too much and not all of it can be absorbed by the skin).
I hope this makes a bit of sense. Unfortunately I can't explain it as well as the customer service of the ordinary when I asked her the same question.
