It's based on your skin's needs. If alpha arbutin is increasing sensitivity for you, try using other ingredients like azelaic acid. Azelaic acid is the best, at least for me. Alternatively, you can try using vitamin C, which reduces oxidative stress and sun damage. If one product isn't working for you, try switching to another and explore other ingredients

Alpha arbutin is a skin brightener that helps decrease hyperpigmentation. Mandelic acid is a very gentle alpha hydroxy acid (works like glycolic acid and lactic acid) that exfoliates dead skin cells. Both AA and MA help decrease hyperpigmentation but they target it differently.

alpha arbutin first then niciamid then vitamin c then moisture. let each layer dried out then slap a nice fatty moisturiser on . works for me I have melasma on my cheeks and upper lip. at night I use tranexamic acid serum and alpha arbutin then moisturiser. three times a week I use tranexamic acid serum. use at night when using tranexamic acid serum.

One thing to keep in mind is the possibility of irritation with both. It may be difficult to gauge whether or not it is isolated to just the ‘differin purge’ or the intolerance to multiple actives. If you are applying on alternative days already, stick to that for now as you mentioned you have acne prone skin and you dont want to disrupt the cycle you started. I used the ordinary's 7% glycolic acid carelessly to brighten my elbows but then it ended up making them darker with pigmentation, it seems that poc or those with tanner skin are more sensitive to hyperpigmentation from over exfoliation
Over exfoliation can be detrimental for darker skin tones as the possibility of unwanted hyperpigmentation is quite higher. It is further caused by irritation and inflammation from overdoing it. First thing I would do is get back to a gentle skincare routine, put a pause on your actives, and focus on barrier repair ingredients.

Thanks for your question. It really depends on the skin condition. It would surprise me if the alpha arbutin would cause darkening as it successfully inhibits melanin synthesis which causes dark spots in the first place. There is some evidence to suggest it causes sun sensitivity, so if you live in a hot climate, sunscreen is a must! I hope this helps. :)

I've been using the Ordinary Ascorbic and Alpha Arbutin serum since 2 months. Last 2 weeks I've been using L'Oreal Retinol serum. My face has burned and has become darker in colour. Ask a good dermatologist before including Retinol on your routime.
