      More than anything it's the headers. But they actually don't need to be anything too crazy, equal length primaries is key. Within 1" of each other. You gotta pick a length between 28" and 36" depending on what rpm you want the scavenging boost. I'll bet if someone were to just buy the BBK equal length shorties and simply make them actually equal length , it would sound pretty darn close to this.

    • @NickKautz
      @NickKautz  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@picklepee2771 Yep , T5 WC. Hard to say how much the build cost because we bought the car as a retired scca caged roller for $500 and we already had a bunch of parts that carried over from our wrecked e30 5.0. To remake this car could cost at little as $6k if you're a mechanic that knows their way around the internet. Easily double that # for the average person. Personally I would only ever use a stock 5.0 shortblock for drag racing. Or else keep your redline around 5500. We went through 6 or 7 motors , mostly catastrophic from rpm harmonics

    • @picklepee2771
      @picklepee2771 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      We're gonna be patient, my brother and myself will fund together. We'll look for an E36 with a blown engine, tranny etc, and a wrecked 5.0 manual mustang.
      It will be a street car though, but still with a bad ass motor, we plan on building the motor from top to bottom so it doesn't blow up lol. Then again we shouldn't see an issue since it will be street car, you raced the hell out of it.
      Probably the cheapest and easist route is a wrecked 5.0 94-98 to beater / blown 94-98 V6.

    • @NickKautz
      @NickKautz  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@picklepee2771 Yeah, you'll find that the guys with 5.0's that work well and stay together have an aftermarket block , forged crank , rods , pistons, and good valvetrain... Some guys use the older 302 block and crank because they are stronger and don't have a 50oz external balance.

    • @NickKautz
      @NickKautz  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably $2000 mostly in valvetrain , intake/carb but the stock bottom ends wouldn't stay together revving to 6k or above. Each time one blew it was $300-$500 for another one. To make these last and make power you have to rev high so you need a dart block and forged bottom end. Otherwise set the rev limited at 5500 and cross your fingers

      It's hit or miss, our car isn't totally out of place , there are many cars like it in lemons, they won't prevent you from racing unless you haven't complied with safety standards. Sometimes we get penalty laps and sometimes not, but so far it hasn't mattered because we haven't gone their trying to win and they can tell if you're there competitively or just to have fun. But we have been in several of their post race review videos and we got interviewed by Hoonigan because of the sound and speed of the car. Lots of people come up and ask what motor it is and how we got it to sound like that, so it's definitely not uninteresting it's just maybe a bit too "racey".

    That “back fire” is caused by bad exhaust scavenging from that stupid X pipe that everyone keeps adding to their exhaust not knowing how the hell they work
    Cut the X pipe out it obviously in the wrong place and hurting the exhaust flow

    • @NickKautz
      @NickKautz  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Backfire is caused from exhaust leaks near the headers, enough air gets in to ignite unburnt fuel passing through from overlap. X-pipe provides scavenging at the correct distance and improves sound quality (subjective) by making it smoother and higher pitched.

    • @mikeeagle2653
      @mikeeagle2653 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nick Kautz unless you use design software and do multiple test you can not be sure the X pipe is in the correct distance from the engine to
      Take advantage of the scavenging it “could prove”. And even when it’s in the correct place it only good for about 8-12 HP.
      That’s a waste of time and money. You get way more exhaust scavenging from a test of real equal length long tub headers with real merge collectors. You can hear how bad this is exhaust and those spent exhaust gases getting trapped and getting hit by the new exhaust gases coming out of the engine

    • @NickKautz
      @NickKautz  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mikeeagle2653 Theory says the x-pipe should be twice as far from the heads as the collectors. That should have scaveging hit at overlap for a second time. The gain wouldn't be much power. On this particular setup the collectors were only 3/4 larger than the primaries. It was more of a sound experiment than power, we were already overpowered in our class.

    • @mikeeagle2653
      @mikeeagle2653 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nick Kautz
      Your theory obviously isn’t working because you should here any of that shit happening in the exhaust system. Period
      All those pops and bangs are hurting the exhaust flow not helping it.
      I own a fabrication shop and build lots of turbo and exhaust systems. Every dyno test done on these x and H pipes and the most it’s ever help
      Is maybe 12-13 hp as a posed to real headers with real merge collectors picking up 20-30 hp

    • @ded3eat
      @ded3eat 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@mikeeagle2653 We were over-powered already for 24 hours of lemons , so I was just playing with sound. Pops only happen on deceleration , no performance issues. It's because I had slip joints connecting the headers to the rest of the exhaust , and air gets sucked in under decel igniting the little bits fuel that pass through during cam overlap . Under accel it doesn't pop because it's combusting all the fuel.
