Constructing a Giant Golden Throne Diorama from Warhammer 40,000

It’s been a few weeks since my last update on the Golden Throne diorama and since then there has been some improvements.
In this video I dive into what we have been working on since our last video and show off the areas that have seen some attention.
As well as new pieces of machinery we look at the advantages of using plasticard and utilising unexpected materials in the build.
There is also a special appearance from a very special Tech priest!

You've nailed the big primary shapes, and all your details work great for tertiary shapes, but I think you need to start worrying a bit more about secondary shapes to break up patterns and add more variation in form.
For example: I think I would use that larger arch that you had pictured - the big gothic one - on the façade of the pyramid. Triple-stacking the smaller arches doesn't look right. If you want to get *really* fancy use a bunch of the big arches, but break up their pattern with a periodic set of smaller or the narrow arches - It would break up that repetition.
The wedding pillars are slick! I think the top plinth of them are both a little too thin and too wide. You might want to add some kind of stepped riser on top of the column, below the statues base. It would both ease the transition between the column and the statue, and give the top of the column a bit more substance.
(if you have a discord or something, I'd be happy to sketch up what I'm referring to if you are interested and/or my description is confusing)
Totally agree, I thought the longer, narrower arches looked better, and were a welcome departure from repeating the same tile dimensions found elsewhere in the build.
Well thank you very much for the feedback! You do have a very valid point and I can see what you mean about breaking up the secondary shapes. I think I will revisit some of the arches I cut out but possibly make the openings a little wider so a bit more of the machinery can be seen. I want to make sure that the build melds together well visually so well definitely continue to test out designs before gluing anything down.
I am glad you like the pillars! They are also still a bit of a work in progress and will take on board your point about the top of them 🙂.

Thank you very much for the feedback. I consider this build in large part to be a community endeavour as it’s had a lot of community suggestions and ideas incorporated in to it. I don’t have a discord yet but will look into setting one up in the near future for people enjoying the build.

For what it's worth: I really like the big arch at 6:07 - I think that one in particular can do some heavy lifting.

Is that the large Gothic arch you are referring to? I have a couple of them and they too are going to be used for experimentation 🤘

For the black strips you should consider routing a groove in there and adding some leds strips with a diffuser.
That’s a very cool idea! We are definitely looking at having some LEDS behind stain glass panels on the back wall of the diorama and could certainly use them elsewhere in the build. I just want to make sure I get the right balance of lighting for the project as sometimes being a bit more sparing with LEDS might enhance the project more 🙂.
Nevertheless we will definitely be experimenting with ideas so thank you for the suggestion!

I was going to say that the façade should be covered by some kind of see-through layering, and the idea for having overarching churchy-bits is genuenly amazing ! Keep up the good work, it looks superbe.
P.S : I would say that the more "church" decor are added the better it would look. As you said, after 10k years, they probably must've added altars and statutes and anything that could be deemed as "holy" above that huge chunk of (maybe xenos) tech

@@imperiumnihilus greenstuff world has a bunch of new candle, and purity seal resin bits. that sort of vibe would really fit at the finishing stages. just a seas of candles all over the floor

@@imperiumnihilus nah is a bit of a joke. John Blanche said in an interview that his idea for his depiction of the emperor on the golden throne was that it was actually a big prop for people to worship and the actual emperor's body was kept in a life support system deep inside the palace in terra. Which kinda makes sense, why would you show off your biggest and most important asset to the public like that even with (literally) all the security in the world. im not too versed in golden throne lore tho but the idea that the big skeleton daddy they show off is imperial propaganda is interesting to me.

There is so much mystery and lore around the Golden throne so I am aware that might build might not be 100% accurate.
I find all the theories really interesting though and can definitely embrace a certain amount of tinfoil 😉

I can totally see imperial priests worshipping individual cables, kinda like the medieval relics cults. "This cable feeds His Sacred Left Index Extensor, who He used to anoint our ancient leader..."

also, I gotta ask: got a 3d printer? (I'm not suggesting you print commercial clones, but rather would it be useful to print bits to fill specific spaces?)

That's amazing. Now the final touch is to add 1000 minis of psykers connected to the throne.
We might have some psyker related shenanigans but maybe not 1000 of them 😂😉
I'm sorry if I missed your reasoning, but for me just using wires is so much easier than trying to roll ones. I like using dead hadphone cables or guts of electronics.
I do it to give some variation in cable size and density 🙂 I feel like a mixture looks pretty good and is visually intriguing 🤘

Tho I still think those space marine busts are very strange to have in the throne room of the Emperor.
Like: "This is the Emperor of mankind! On the wall there is Steve, he killed a hive tyrant".
I mean the Emperor did create the space marines and it doesn’t have to just represent Steve. It could represent space marines as a whole 😉

Insanely impressive work. I don't think people really understand the scale of the project you're undertaking here, but I can totally understand why you come to and from it.
That’s really kind of you to say! It’s been and continues to be a very large undertaking but I have had great support from the community and am really looking forward to progressing with the build and eventually sharing the finished product with you guys 🙂. I think some jobs end up being that way just to spare my sanity a little bit 😂. Thank you!
Mate it looks spectacular, so well done. I was just thinking that this project deserves the most premium of paint jobs, I think you should somehow get the assistance of a pro miniature painter, if indeed possible.

I have to know, how did you get the Large base plates to stick flat? When I've worked with them they "rise up" at the middle.
Most of them aren’t glued at the moment but the ones that are have been stuck down using ‘no more nails’. It’s more heavy duty stuff and helps keep them flat 🙂🤘
For things like your balustrades a machinists block may hell you and cos of its weight you can magnetise bits to it using a magnet and let it hold the parts for you whilst they glue.
That’s an idea! I have stuck most of them down now but will certainly bear that in mind 🙂

So as an idea what about putting some massive anti-personnel anti-air and anti-armor turrets on top of the pillars with the statues on top of them....

Id recommend hiding little bits of xeno tech here and there in the cabling or other dense areas.
There are a few Necron pieces hidden in there but I can always hide some more 😉
