Yeah having something to loght your work is so important. I usually have to paint during the day with my lighting conditions currently. Thanks for the video!
I'm so glad someone called out the effectiveness of this brush. I literally just started with this set and was very confused if I was just that bad. I'll be switching to something different haha Thanks for the great video!
I started dry brushing everything, with a 5mm flat brush. Start with a black base coat, then dry brush everything blue, then dry brush the gold highlights on the armour, then dry brush the gun with silver, the mag with gold, any flesh etc. Dry brush, dry brush, dry brush, and the model takes on a sort of cell shaded quality that somehow transcends the primitive paint job to give it its own sort of art style if that makes sense. Like how some old games still look good because their art style is timeless, thats sort of what my minis have, and I'm basing that on the reaction of others, including randos who don't owe me any pleasantries. I'm happy with them, and the best bit is, it is a very quick painting method.
@@RECTALBURRITO Yeah that's actually really clever, I've never heard someone talk about paint markers before but they sound like a really obvious solution for detailing.
It was for me, and it got me into the hobby. Im now in the process of painting a box of 10 chaos space marines, and this was a great way to show me what I was getting into. Personally, I would highly recommend this! I will note that I did grab my own primer (The wrong one, albeit lol), different cheap acrylic brushes, and basic dry palette.
Bought a cheap airbrush kit for priming and basing and it was worth the investment as the minis turned out great now need to skill up with the brush side of things and im dreading edge highlighting. Your video shows me how bad they would look had i tried painting without priming and a half decent brush, cheers m8 good helpful stuff
Interesting to hear - did you find a good enough compresssor for the airbrush? My first airbrush was a cheaper one and I found it more hinderance than help tbh - but I think I lament all the nonsense of cleaning in between colours etc. :D
As someone who hasn't painted since art class in school over 20 years ago, this was really intriguing to watch. Here's hoping my marines don't turn into a glob of paint exterminatus.

As a 44 year old yank who is learning to paint little plastic toys, I really appreciate this video, and your delivery. Subbing now so I can act cool when you blow up.
This is my first dive back into 40K since I was a kid 25 odd years ago. You got yourself a fan mate! Jesus Christ you’re funny. The Jackson Pollock bit almost killed me. Congrats on making an amazing channel already. Cannot wait to see where it goes for you. Thanks for the epic content. Mega inspired. Bye bye savings!
To beginners, pop it toys are really nice to use for paint. I do have a wet pallet but alot of the time i use the pop it toy instead. You can dilute citadel paints with water. Keep some cheap bad brushes for mixing colours. Also good for drybrushing and metallics that eats nice brushes for breakfast. For scraping mold lines i prefer a dull hobbyknife, a sharp one may cut into the plastic model if not carefull enough. An old nail polisher can be used to smoothen surface. But a sharp cutters is very helpful, less scraping. A cut in halv pet bottle with texture is great for cleaning brushes. You can strip the paint of a model with IPA, fill a small cup, add a modell and swirl until paints coming off, clean under water with a toothbrush. These tips are maby not for proffesional painters, but for hobby painters, as it will save you some money to pick up more models to paint.
Just bought this kit yesterday! Then I bought a terminator pack. Will wait to paint that though, want more paints and don’t want smurfs. It was my first endeavor, wish I could share them here. I think they came out pretty damn good!
I started with what I think was the first primaris start painting set. I did them as Ultra Marines. The only paint I used that wasn't in the set was brown for the holsters and pouches, red for the eyes, and white for the shoulder iconography which I did by hand as I didn't understand how to use water transfers at the time. I later picked Imperial Fists/successors as my chapter, but I still have that original trio of Ultramarines and will leave them untouched as a monument to my painting beginnings.
Oh yeah for sure - and you can always go back and paint the same marines again to see how far you've come - I wish I'd kept my first painted minis, it would have been a good laugh for everyone if nothing else!! :D - also transfers are the devil's work! I should really do a video on them but hell, I'm awful with getting them right. haha
The $55 USD starter set with space marines and the tyranids set had clippers, paints, dice, a mat, a ruler, and a brush. In my opinion this is the best set to get started on.
The warhammer shop near me gave me a free sample of putting one together and let me paint another, got to take both home so bought this exact painting kit but I bought clippers from another place for cheaper. I had fun painting them, but I bought red paint as well and just used the black as a base and the red/gold for the shoulders. After the first model, I did have to run out and get a smaller brush 😅
To be quite honest, the plastic, the assembly insturctions or even the laminated box works well enough as a dry palette in a pinch, ive been using them for weeks due to a packing mistake for a trip. As an aside, washing up the models using the family heirloom dish soap and dad's favourite toothbrush would help to black ashere to the plastic better.
Ah thanks. I never know if it’s too much or not. I sometimes assume people would rather have their own on but long periods of silence feel a bit odd! :D
Fair play, if that was my first marine ever I'd be pleased with that! I never had clippers when I started. I'd just push and twist the peices off the sprues.
I'm sure it'll be grand! Feel free to share in the Discord if you want to - always interested to see people's paintjob (and would be happy to provide feedback or help if requested). :)
You can diy a wet pallet super easy with a container, kitchen roll and baking paper and when you are going to paint make the kitchen roll wet then place baking paper over top, this will make paint last for hours
Im new and looking at getting some space marines, and this video is extremely helpful. Probably not ultramarines, but maybe iron fists, carcharodons, or blood angels
Great! Warhammer sells them as marines mostly. Some factions have specific models but generally they’re all sold as generic and you paint as you wish :)
Oh hey, my first attempt way back when was much worse than now, but after a few years I'm holding myself to higher standards (perhaps wrongly!) but yeah, it turned out OK in all seriousness. I'm just heavy on the sarcasm these days!
I'd probably "prime" it with a mix of blue and black (aka dark blue)... it wouldn't need to be an even coat. Then I'd go in with full blacks where needed, and then apply white or light blue or light gray on the bright areas and edges (maybe even zenithal drybrush). Finally I'd go i with the regular blue (and gold) as a sort of layer colour, reducing the amount of passes needed as I find it absolutely dreadful to do multiple passes with the same colour. Even if the pre-highlights are a bit messy that tends to be played down by the layering. Then a single thin highlight pass on the blue at some select spots. The texture paint is a bit of a waste in this set... a skintone-ish red/brown would've been more useful, yeah. The bases could've been sculpted rocks or deck plates. Smearing sand paint around is kind of annoying and easily ruins/gunks up the brush and paint water. Personally I'm quite okay with a shoddy brush as long as I'm not freehanding heraldics or doing eyes. It's possible to get to most of the highlight edges with the edge of the brush so a great tip is not always needed.
Just found your channel, and you've got a new subscriber. Great video, and the comedy is golden. Genuine tears of laughter at the Jackson Pollock line, i had to pause the video until i could see clearly again.

As for making non-metallic metals look good, you want high contrasts, almost pitch black right next to gleaming whites, and you may also want to mix in thinned-down splotches of some other colors to create the illusion of a surface reflecting its surroundings. And as with all artistic endeavors, use references. If you don't have any metallic objects nearby to study as you paint your minis, google up some photos of chrome pipes or sparkling cars or something.

I'm so glad someone called out the effectiveness of this brush. I literally just started with this set and was very confused if I was just that bad. I'll be switching to something different haha Thanks for the great video!
No problem at all - don't worry - it's not you going mad, it's a terrible brush :D
With the hobby knives I use, I don't even need clippers. The plastics I work with are on the weaker side, and I can cut through them like butter.
Perfect! Then you can also use them for mould lines etc :)
I like the fact you’re a 40 something mini painter and proud
Thoroughly enjoyed the commentary and the concept.
Subscribed and looking forward to browsing the rest of your stuff.
Great painting
Thank you :)
Just found your channel and subscribed, just recently got into painting so looking forward to picking up some helpful tips
Thank you - welcome to the hobby! Hope I can help you enjoy the painting!
Oh nice, would be cool to see that - sounds like you've got a technique down!
I use a fine tip gold paint marker for the chest and other areas.
Ok that’s also a cool idea!!
@@RECTALBURRITO Yeah that's actually really clever, I've never heard someone talk about paint markers before but they sound like a really obvious solution for detailing.
Ty for ur video cant wait to try this at home love this hobby realy helped mij adhd
You are very welcome! Thanks for the comment :)
Sounds like you’ve got it under control! Thanks for the comment :) feel free to share your progress in the discord if you like!
I learned more about how to be humble than about painting from this video, and I learned a lot about painting! :P
As someone who hasn't painted since art class in school over 20 years ago, this was really intriguing to watch. Here's hoping my marines don't turn into a glob of paint exterminatus.
Oh I’m sure you’ll be grand!! :)
How the hell don't you have more subscribers. You have an amazing personality and the little jokes you throw in are hilarious.
I absolutely lost my shit at 'beginner clippers that "the poors" use'
Amazing stuff man, keep it up!
Much better result that what I ever managed to do through the end of the 90s/early 2000s not gonna lie
Holy, the tip of your brush is immaculate. Gotta get me one of those
Earned a sub for your entertaining commentary. I'm just getting back into 40k/model making after a 20 year break. Your tutorials will come in well handy. Thanks dude
As a 44 year old yank who is learning to paint little plastic toys, I really appreciate this video, and your delivery. Subbing now so I can act cool when you blow up.
Excellent. Thank you!! I'm more than open to you become president of the fan club - just let me know, I'm sure we can arrange a badge or something! :D
Welcome back to the hobby bud! And yeah - bye bye to all your money!! :)
All great tips, thank you - some excellent info here - I mention the pop-it toys in another video, I have one for washes and metallics :)
Just bought this kit yesterday! Then I bought a terminator pack. Will wait to paint that though, want more paints and don’t want smurfs. It was my first endeavor, wish I could share them here. I think they came out pretty damn good!
I wish you could share them here too! Glad you're happy with them - keep it up! :)
Agreed. I also did a couple of videos on that set :)
Great and incredibly funny channel. Underrated as fuck.
My parents bought teenage me a scaple for hobby use... that knife taught me a valuable lesson... knives are sharp.
They are! Kudos to GW for push fit but sometimes life lessons need to be learned I guess :)
Fantastic - welcome to the hobby :) - feel free to jump onto the Discord and share!
Bought my first box of these just a few days ago, I think my mini turned out pretty darn well considering I've never painted anything in my life.
Awesome, welcome to the hobby!!
Nicely painted on a budget of paint, brush and technique but not ability. The shoulder markings are beautifully done. You show your skill definitely 😊
Thank you! For what it’s worth those shoulder markings are embossed which makes it a LOT easier :)
Nice! Two people have mentioned this now. Thank you! Defo giving this a go on the stormcast starter set. “This one weird trick” etc :)
excellent video - ive been using the plastic tray the starter kit came in as a palette for a number of models now, its worked great
Great minds think alike:)
those marines look terrific!!
Thank you!
Yes we do, great video and thank you.
Great video. Relaxing bgm was a nice touch
Ah thanks. I never know if it’s too much or not. I sometimes assume people would rather have their own on but long periods of silence feel a bit odd! :D
Fair play, if that was my first marine ever I'd be pleased with that! I never had clippers when I started. I'd just push and twist the peices off the sprues.
Absolutely an option! :)
I'm painting my first ever mini and if it's even a fraction of how your first one turned out, I would be over the moon!
I'm sure it'll be grand! Feel free to share in the Discord if you want to - always interested to see people's paintjob (and would be happy to provide feedback or help if requested). :)
Nail clippers work pretty good to get the parts off the sprue. The big toenail ones
No way! haha I've never tried that, but makes sense. Ingenious!
You can diy a wet pallet super easy with a container, kitchen roll and baking paper and when you are going to paint make the kitchen roll wet then place baking paper over top, this will make paint last for hours
Very true - I cover it a little in my wet palette video too :)
Still way better than my first attempt with that style starter kit.
Genuine tears of laughter at the Jackson Pollock line, i had to pause the video until i could see clearly again.
haha, brilliant - glad to hear it :D
hilarious video man, great job
my incredible uncle who am i very close with got me this set for christmas and i enjoyed every moment of painting it
Fantastic! What a legend. Is your uncle also into the hobby? You're welcome to share pics of your work on the Discord if you like - do you think you'll continue with collecting/painting other models?
@@alexpaintstinythings yes he is very much so, he taught me how to paint for hours on christmas and the days following. i’ve already painted 2 sigmarite warriors and a ultramarine death captain
Excellent!! Welcome to the hobby :)
@@alexpaintstinythingsalex… i just spent 70 quid on Brother Valtus the Glorious Dreadnought and a black spray primer rattle can plus a new contrast paint and a brush set and i am wholly terrified to paint him. The hobby consumes…
Also i have to say your commentary and dry humour really adds to your videos and your channel deserves a million more subs.
i bought Valtus right after finishing space marine 2 and seeing him in action FORCED me to buy him. It’s very scary to paint such an expensive and big model but i place my faith in our Holy God Emperor
Glory to the Imperium.
Aww yeah - you’re deep into it now!! Do not fear starting - put some paint on the brush and see what happens. Once primed those minis often seem more enticing too :) - also, feel free to jump onto the discord if you like - we can help and encourage more easily there :)
Just bought these before seeing your video.
Truthfully, I think they came out fantastic given the paints and brush you had to work with.
Really impressive with the quality of videos! Plus showing how to best utilize the little bit of paints one may have. (Also would like to watch a more in depth video on nmm 👀)
I’d like to do one on NMM but I guess my main concern there is I’m still a bit of an amateur in that respect. Could defo cover the basics though! Thank you :)
They look really good to me! I mean, I think I dumped actual wood varnish on my first space marine. Nice job! Also probably helped save a few squidolies when getting our boy into the hobby!
Wood varnish yikes!! Listen - whatever works for you is absolutely fine :) - thanks for the comment!
“If your thumb doesn’t look like you’ve had it up Sydney Pollack’s arse-hole, then you’re doing it wrong..!”
You had me at Pollack’s arse!
Sub’d instantly!
I'm a beginner and i bought this pack, but with (apart) a base can and 3 more colours (retributor, mephiston red and leadbelcher) and i'm pretty happy with the result for my first figure (i did just one i bought it yesterday); I started with a sample gifted.
Awesome! Welcome to the hobby! Feel free to share your results on the discord - happy to provide feedback if you like too :)
Well done. Was fun.
Hey now champ.
You did great. As a little kid that’s literally only just got into this hobby and don’t even know what decals are yet you did amazing.
Keep up this hard work champ and we could make a ULTRAMARINE out of you yet!!
Wait till you discover tinned primer!! Contrast paints!!! Brands that don’t use the horrendous citadel pots!!! The world is your ouster kid may the light of the emperor shine upon you!
haha, thanks pops! I feel like a REAL boy now :D
@@alexpaintstinythings hahaha, go get em!
'the brush is already hooked'
Me who's brushes are just as bad: *smugness*
haha
welp, I'm forty-something and just picked up my first 10-marine box and some random blue, gold, black and like.. dark green paints to have something to play around with with my 6 and 7 year old kids. So far they love it. And my youtube is becoming increasingly filled with WH40K...
Haha get used to that!! Welcome to you and your kids - glad we have more people joining the hobby :)
Love the video, the snarky sarcastic sense of humor hits the right tone with me.
You are my audience :) Thank you!
Still 1000 times better than any of my work 😅
i appreciate your humor. I used to blow my nose in my mom's curtains when i was a kid, but now I can just wipe my paints off on them.
haha, brilliant :D
Definitely looked fine to me lol but the key take away for me as a beginner is to get better brushes. Thanks for the video!
Excellent!!
*chuckles as he looks he thinks of the Adeptus Staticus-er-Stormcast Eternals from the AOS Introductory set he did a job on when Retibutor Armour spray primer he used was not shaken as well as he thought.*
Ended up with 5 crusty-rusty looking minis. :D
haha, StormCrust Eternals :D
I've used the same citedel brush for 4 years and I've never had a problem with its bristles
No way - which brush? I know their "Artificer" ones are actually re-branded W&N Series 7 anyway but assuming it's not one of them - keen to know, and to know how you've kept it so well!
@@alexpaintstinythings the medium layer and the citedel water pot with the four ridges in the back. Drag and twist through that. It also could be a brush to brush case. I do struggle with the artificer brush so that's the same lol.
@@mc_sheepface5166 Sounds like you got a proper brilliant brush! A good batch or you've kept it well - I guess that plays into it too, right? A well treated brush will last regardless - although some (AKA, the "starter" brush) may be the exception to the rule. :D
@@alexpaintstinythings a well maintained brush and pallet will take you miles. :)
That face when someone asks if you've been paining warhammer minis, and you look them dead in the eye and say "No, I was giving Jackson pollock's arse a good thumbing."
hahahaha
Your "worst effort" is 1000% better than my best effort
Thank you - I’m assuming it’s just a case of practice. I’ve been at it since 2018 now :)
Brilliant video this - every few years I sink into Warhammer a bit, buy some stuff, never paint it, sell it, rinse and repeat. I think it’s time to start again hahah
I'd like to see you do a video where you "create" a beginner kit for a similar value see what's actually doable on a budget. Nicer brush but less paints etc.
Believe it or not, I have almost finished scripting THIS EXACT VIDEO!! That's good to hear - makes me feel like I'm on the right lines with my thinking. :)
@@alexpaintstinythings yessssssss I need to see it soon before I make anymore poor financial decisions with this hobby… haha
@@NVS_Videos Hope I can get it finished, filmed and out int he next 2 weeks - fingers crossed.
@@alexpaintstinythings 🙏
This was exactly my experience this year... after many years away from tabletop games I wanted to paint some Eldar guardians and bought a citadel starter box (the one with some colors, a brush, clippers and a tool for removing sprue)... it was so frustrating to try to do edges with that sad brush... in the end I had to buy so much more than originally intended. ...Nice work here with far less tools!
Thank you - yeah I'm planning a video on "what you actually need to start off" so that people get a better idea of the investment - it can be an expensive hobby (although I guess it odesn't HAVE to be) but knowing what that investment is ahead of time can help people I guess. Out of interest, did you stick with it, or did the experience put you off?
Definitely not the worst i've seen lol
One of the things I actually do and recommend for the snap together sets is trim down the pegs a little bit so there arent any gaps etc. def have to use glue
Absolutely - although I didn't want to use more than you get in the box for this one - but normally I'd trim them off and just superglue it :)
That actually looks amazing
Thank you!!
9:24 just wait till you see me do it
Haha - feel free to share your progress!
Trying out WH40K for the first time and just bought this set. Saw this and the Duncan Rhodes beginner video. Limited the cost as much as possible but did get all those additional items besides the wet pallet. We'll see how this goes but the lore/art style is too cool for me not to try.
Welcome to the hobby! Agreed the lore & art are a big pull to the hobby - and there's SO MUCH OF IT! :D
I am a musician, guitar player primarily that loves 40k, but has never painted, only collected toys and read lore, but this is the equivalent of taking a build your own guitar kit and making it professionally usable, good job, you even used the cables, picks, and strings that would have come with the G-Tar POS model.
Thanks! Also a musician here :) - my other hobby. Glad you enjoyed this. Ever think you’ll get into painting or playing?
@@alexpaintstinythings I would like to, but I probably would need about a grand of pocket change to throw at it to feel satisfied, used to play Yugioh, video games, all sorts of entertainment and had to do it at a certain level in order to feel good, and I know I would want to be competitive, or at least be able to throw down with more than just my friends, one day though.
@@TheGreatBaronOBeefDip Ah yeah it's pricey for sure - if you want to go the competitive route with games then defo, you're talking buying up full armies and such - just the painting side could be cheaper to get into but I know it's only half the hobby in a sense. One day :)
@@alexpaintstinythings I have 7 McFarlane figures, I collect action figures as well, and I am already afraid of how much JoyToy will devastate my wallet.
@@TheGreatBaronOBeefDip oh yeah - those things are pricey. I have the Joy Toy Invictor Tactical Warsuit - it's a beast!
GW will always sell these packs with just enough paints to do the bare minimum, but not enough that you can actually be satisfied with the model.
You're so right! It's a strong business model, but boy is it annoying! :D
I picked this set up as my first, I've painted one marine so far and really happy with my result.
The only additional thing I had was a DIY wetpad along with some different brushes that I already had laying around. The quality of which are probably about the same as the starter brush anyway.
I don't think me having more paints would of helped much, it would of made it more complicated and overwhelming for a complete novice.
Overall I think the set is pretty perfect for its target market.
I agree - although I do think a better brush is still something they could be less cheap about - you CAN get cheap, better brushes, so I think they should be exploring how to get a nicer brush in the pack just so people are not put off by that. - glad you're happy with your marine though - keep at it! Do you think you'll get into the hobby for painting or for gaming, or both?
@@alexpaintstinythings All valid points, if GW would take feedback from both veteran and novices alike, I'm sure they could create a truly amazing set.
I'll definitely be sticking with it. It's great fun. Though I'll no doubt stick to just painting, rather than playing.
@@mikeyp4690 GW... Take feedback??... haha - good one :D - I'll crack the jokes eh? - seriously though, they should take feedback on, but the way the company has grown in the last 5-10 years I'd say they're a whole different beast now.
@@alexpaintstinythings Ha, did my noviceness shine through there?
Honestly, my only dealings with Warhammer and GW would be in the late 90's / early 00's when the had a store in my local shopping mall and about a week ago when I got this starter set.

You can use some kind of plate with a wet kitchen roll and baking paper on top of it to make a wet palette.
You can indeed. I have some suggestions on my wet palette vid :)
Well thats it i guess im going to start this now too
I don't have super special paints, in fact, I only have the paints for a very specific Hasegawa F-22 from AC7, so I don't exactly follow color instructions a lot of the time, since the only minis I have are from a $25 box, I painted them in three groups, each with different colors. My favorites are the ones I accidentally turned into Blood Ravens.
Oh nice! I mean you don’t need fancy paints really - any will do! Sounds like you smashed it and had fun - perfect, basically :)
