Being in Canada your gonna wanna undercoat that car more. I’ve worked on many Mazda 3s and I live in novascotia and let me tell you fluid film black is liquid gold. Highly recommend your car is still in decent shape but has some underbody rust
Yes 100% that's the best way! I try to undercoat the cars I drive in the winter time every year. I'm parking this car for winter so it can hopefully stay clean for a few more years.
It was a pleasure working together! You completely transformed the car! I guess I have no choice but to race my 2.5 VS my tuned 2.0 to see what happens! 😆

Omg ok so im in this process with justin right now.... this just made me even more excited and confident in my decision to go this route instead of straight to supercharger. Can't wait for the first tune file!!!!
Yeah you can get some nice gains with the 2.5 FBO, from what the tuner said the 2.5 N/A Tuned FBO is faster than stock 2.5 turbo. Keep us updated how it goes!
@@DrivingProduction it in fact blew up 🤯, I didn’t even get a chance to dyno tune yet or finish the exhaust, had just a CAI and axle back on the stock tune, no idea what it is yet, but I think the torque converter took a dump in the transmission
@@skyman86 total transmission failure seems that my trans fluid oil pump cracked and shattered, shot metal everywhere and then with no fluid flow things overheated very quickly, got stuck in gridlock, limped the car off the highway but by that point it was too late, so the transmission was totally trashed, luckily Mazda did replace the transmission no questions asked after reviewing the drive data, they gave me a loaner for the time being so it wasn’t all too bad, I have the car back and they clearly also made some revisions to the transmissions behavior on the replacement gearbox, occasionally getting the weird snarl or fart dsg cars make on wot when shifting
Great content! You are very skilled. I changed the throttle body after I saw you. Next is to change to colder spark plugs. One great mod is to change to lighter crank pulley. You can feel better throttle responds just like to change to bigger throttle body.
Some things I’ve gained some very noticeable differences and power from in my 13 Mazda hb with the 2.0 skyactive kinda a long post but it’s worth the read. New coils & ruthenium spark plugs stock code (I’ll try gtr rutheniums if they have them next for sure) Overall gas mileage increase and throttle response. Almost felt like I got a lightened flywheel. A little smoother as well. Big Ground mods , most important is a ground from throttle body area (throttle sensor)to battery. helped so much with cars responsiveness and keeping more consistent voltage. Probably less then 10 bucks to do, arguably best bang for buck mod on the car especially if u have a audio system etc. Crc intake valve cleaner, cleans carbon deposit highly recommend for these direct injection engines. Gotta do some oil changes after though cause it adds carbon and gunk into your oil. fuel treatment like royal purple or bg44k something with PEA. It’ll clean injectors. Just add in a low tank and fill up tank A engine flush treatment I went with motor flush. Gotta do multiple oil changes to be sure you get all the stuff out (use good filters fram full synthetic filters are best for the price about 7 bucks they catch the most material for the price.) but after doing the Crc and motor flush and fuel treatment, car pulls super hard and it’s a night and day difference. Gained mpg , torque and top end. One mod I did that lost me power and fuel economy believe it or not was actually straight piping (2.25 inch) the car from headers back but the car was open right after headers before the straight pipe for a long time since I’m busy and the shop I wanted to do the work was always booked . So I went to more restriction rather than less and lost mpg and performance car starts like choking out after 3 k rpm I’d figure I’d mention it seems these cars like and need a good free flowing exhaust like the Honda k series do. Which makes sense since these engines are pretty much factory built n/a engines. High compression, factory headers ,light and balanced parts etc. Actually why I’m here my exhaust guy told me I should look into getting it tuned. Rather then redoing the pipe. I might try and message that tuner and see what he thinks about the exhaust flow on these cars. To me it still looks like it struggles past 3k rpm even with the tune quite a bit. With an open header at least once the car hit like 3500 rpm it pulled really hard it’s when it like woke up similar to the before and after of your tune but in reverse order for me lol but after the exhaust, feels like after 3500 rpm car dies and power band flatlines like how you mentioned in the video . Like before when car was open header, I had low end torque but the top end is where the cars power was all made and with it being so restricted now it feels like I get a shot of torque and power up to 3 k then car has none after 3k. Just feels flat. Rpm’s don’t climb as fast as before. I’ll be doing the mounts for wheel hop and all the supporting mods and tune like you did in the video soon but definitely want to get more info on the exhaust before I continue.
Thanks for sharing you experience with you car so far! That's some great information! I've gotten similar results from the things I've done in what you mentioned. For the exhaust Justin from the Sauce Tune does recommend 2.25 as the ideal exhaust size for the 2.0 N/A, think he does mention to keep a resonator and muffler for maximum performance but you'd have to check with him to confirm. 👍
@@DrivingProduction Yeah I ended up doing some research and found that size pipe is ideal for velocity etc. The car feels a lot better now after some ecu relearning but my fuel economy is still down after the 2.25 pipe surprisingly. When I was digging I came across some interesting stuff these cars need the factory air box design to perform at its best. Since the car has two engine cycles. The factory air box has like this dead end tubing that prevents the air pushing out the intake while allowing air to still flow into your engine. At like 4 k rpm engine switchs engines cycles and runs more like a diesel than a traditional 4 stroke cycle causes like a forced induction effect in intake essentially if I’m remembering correct. If you boost it (turbo or supercharger) then you don’t have to worry about it but if ur n/a u can starve your engine of air and I think even cause detonation if I remember right. For the headers Ive been looking into hot pipes/ speed labs headers. They actually took into account the skyactiv engine for the design and it’s supposedly ideal scavenging which is big with our valves being small gets exhaust gas out fast, prevents knock etc they claim almost 10 hp with no retune and more with a tune.
i used to have a 6spd skyactiv I was looking into somehow building and I loved it! sadly I got t-boned in it in 2021 and it was deemed a total loss. i did get another gen 2 in auto for the wife but eventually i want a gen 3 to daily myself as our other car is my project car.
You are really making me want to get his tune as soon as I have some spare money I can go around and get it. I have the detuned 146hp 2.0 and its a 6 so more weight to be pulled around, can't wait to give it a run.
I wonder what the car is making at the wheels? Great work as always!!! This car has to definelty be faster than the 2.5 2nd gen mzr and even the sky 2.5
Thanks! I would say from what the car feels like around the 160-170 WHP, it's defiantly faster than a MZR 2.5 like you said, I hope it's faster than a 2.5 skyactiv it feels really close to it. I guess I have no choice but to race both 😅
My 2.5 swapped gen 1 eats my buddies 2.0 gen 3, even having the old 4 speed autotragic. And the stock 2.3 ECU doesn't run it the best. His sky just has an exhaust, and he had an intake for a bit, but ended up going back to stock bc the heat soak made it slower lmao
That's what a lot of people say before trying it on the skyactiv. I would say that its generally true, but on the skyactiv platform people that do this mod have seen great results.
Just curious how the fuel pump would add power to the car. And I’m driving a 2011 2.5 (not sky) so I curious how it would affect my car if I installed it. Great video btw!!
Thanks! Glad you liked the video! For the specifics of why the fuel pump adds power, Justin would be the best to ask for that. This is a Skyactiv specific mod though, as from what I've seen the fuel pump is different on the MZR cars.
I drove that same car had a black hatch 219,000miles 6spmt traded it in for a 335is but my last maintenance services they said it’s insane I was averaging 32mpg still

this video is what i needed, lots and lots of forums of the same dude. "you arent going to make any kind of gains without spending 5-7k for NA" "your tuner is lying to you"
after drivetrain loss the 18 2.5 puts anywhere from 160-170hp to the wheels, its hard to believe that a bump to 190-200hp is not as hard/expensive as everyone makes it
Yeah the skyactiv engine is great! 2.0 or 2.5 have lots of potential! Like you said a 2.5 can be close to 200hp at the crank with a few bolt on and a tune. Justin did mention that a properly tuned N/A 2.5 in the 3rd gen is equally or a bit faster than the factory 4th gen turbos which is wild!
@DrivingProduction thats crazy to think about as well! By no means am i look for a spaceship if i wanted that, corksport makes the turbo kit that i would save for with no question, just don't want that yet nor have the time to tear it down as its my daily
@@foxcournyeaSkyactiv NA engines have such high compression, makes for great efficiency, but a horrible idea for boosting. You can spend a ton on a turbo kit, run low boost and get a really good tune to make pretty low power, especially for the money and work put into it. And even then, high likelihood of zoom zoom boom
Hey man, I’m in Ottawa area too! (Barhaven) I have a 2017 2.5 skyactive. Would the spark plugs you installed be recommended for the 2.5 as well? And if so where did you get them? Cheers
Hey man! That's awesome I'm often in that area actually haha. Yes they work on the 2.5, even without a tune it's a nice upgrade, that and and the fuel pump, and on the 3rd gens you can just remove the back seats no need to drop the tank. I got the plugs here: www.clubplug.ca/NGK-DILKAR8A8-93026
I saw a bit of a difference in top end when I installed it, by itself before I got it tuned. I think it's a worthy upgrade for the cost of a used on on eBay
Watching your videos I am surprised that Skyactive was in older mazdas as well. I have 2016 2.0 and its 120hp. Does this mod with throtle body increase a fuel consumption or just works on responsivness for daily drive? Another question, is there a way to solve high idling in the morning or when engine is cold? Its annoying because sometimes lasts for 30sec or more. Thanks
When I upgraded my TB I didn't see a difference in fuel economy, the car feels like it pulls a bit more towards the top end but you might loose a bit on the lower end. Now since you have the detuned version with 120hp I'm not sure what the response will be. I did this with the 155hp version before I got it tuned. The best way to get the most out of your car is definitely getting a tune since you car bring it past the factory 165hp of other models. For the cold start pretty much all modern cars have that and that's to warm up the catalytic converters, it can be tuned out but you would have to be catless. Hope this helps!
@@DrivingProduction ha, catless - this is something i was not thinking about 'till now. Need to check how our regulations body will see that - it's crazy in Europe and here in Serbia with those mods. Just one more thing, I thought that higher HP versions are those one's with turbo in it, my does not have it, it's pure atmospheric engine. If this is the case, then for sure I will find someone locally to do Stage 1 tune to see the benefits. Thanks for the answer.
Amazing video, amazing car, i am looking forward before getting a tune, maybe getting Lightweight rims and after that getting the sauce hahahaa So for a stock tune, u would see an upgrade with the sparkplugs of the gtr and the fuel pump of the 3 turbo i have a 2.0 skyg 2020
That's awesome! Glad you liked the video! Keep up the mods the 4th gens look so good! Yes you'll see a difference even without a tune, even Justin recommends doing these mods before getting a tune. 👍
Mazdaspeeds are cool, but can be a bit finicky. I got a 04 sedan for free off of a family friend, and honestly really like the car. Did a 2.5 swap, and after hearing about this engines potential, currently floating the idea of doing a speed3 trans swap to support some serious power and building another 2.5 on the side to reliably hold high power. The tight stock ring gap on 2.5s often leads to piston failure around 350-400whp on a stock internal 2.5. all tune dependent of course. Definitely a lot more time and work and you need the tools and mechanical experience. But the 2.5 MZR is a beast in disguise.
I have 1,8L with the 16 valve DOHC engine and my spinns on 1-3 gear, but I want more power in my car. Its only 120hp! Is it something I can do to get more HPOWER and does the mods you are talking about work on my car?
a tune and bolt ons can help but for N/A cars it's not going to add an extra 50hp or anything, but can increase drivability and the feel of the car. maybe you can squeeze and extra 10-15hp
are u getting revisions because this is a custom tune? like are most of the tunes for mazda 3s just download and ur good to go? im looking to tune my cx 30 at some point
Any recommendations for my 2012 - Mazda - 3 - I Touring Sedan 4-Door I wanna upgrade to a sport fuel pump. It’s a skyactive engine but I can’t find anything
I have a 2021 skyactiv G 2.0 automatic 150 horse power. Would this tune + spark plugs also work and if so what gains should I get? I would love for it to Rev to 7k+ the automatic shifts at 6.5k now.
Yes 100% you would see some really nice gains from it and you could definitely up the redline to 7k. End power figures depends greatly on your mods you also have on top of the tune, so I would contact the tuner for more information.
@@DrivingProduction thanks for your reply. But what increase in HP should i expect if i only do the plugs + the tune? i would really like to keep te rest stock. Also i live in the Netherlands and for some reason my 150 version only goes up to 165 according to tuners as the previous 165 version would go to 180? i thought all these engines where the same hardware wise?
Yes it does work for the Cx-5, as far a fuel economy some people do report having better gas mileage, but you'd have to reach out to Justin to see if he can tune specifically for gas milage

For the spark plugs what I mentioned in the video was actually incorrect, what they actually do is prevent the engine from trying to protect itself from a lean condition.
Having the smaller gap allows the car to register IONs better so it doesn't pull power. It's just an easier & cheaper trick than trying to change out the coils. The coils increase in resistance over time so it's harder for current to flow through.

I got the plugs here: www.clubplug.ca/NGK-DILKAR8A8-93026
Did you get the tune with the 2.5L throttle body or without? And did it make any difference?
👍👍👍💪💪👍 good job bro!!
Thanks! Glad you liked the video!! 👍
I miss how torquey it was in low RPM, the speed doesnt like to be boosted under 3k, so theres a part of that experience i miss having 😢
Yes low end torque is nice on the daily commutes! But you do have all the turbo goodies with the speed! 😋
Amazing video, amazing car, i am looking forward before getting a tune, maybe getting Lightweight rims and after that getting the sauce hahahaa
So for a stock tune, u would see an upgrade with the sparkplugs of the gtr and the fuel pump of the 3 turbo
i have a 2.0 skyg 2020
That's awesome! Glad you liked the video! Keep up the mods the 4th gens look so good! Yes you'll see a difference even without a tune, even Justin recommends doing these mods before getting a tune. 👍
Biggest tip for any Mazda owners. Get a mazdaspeed 😂
Ouff 🤣😂Then wait for it to go zoom zoom boom 😅
@@dkis8730 the 2.3 short block is king. U have to gap the rings on the 2.5 to handle boost.
@@sav7123 don't have too, just have to run lower boost. 2.5 rod ratio better than 2.3
@@dkis8730 well the 2.5 is not the mazdaspeed motor. So I don’t really understand. The 2.3 can handle 800+
will doing these colder plugs on a stock/non tuned motor have any negative effect or is it completely safe?
Nope there's no side effect it's completely safe to do on stock/non tuned engines. 👍
@@DrivingProduction thx for the info
Hey this is a custom tune, so yes I got many revisions, I still do get some actually because Justin is on point and keeps on updating his tunes!
Any recommendations for my 2012 - Mazda - 3 - I Touring Sedan 4-Door I wanna upgrade to a sport fuel pump. It’s a skyactive engine but I can’t find anything
It's the same thing as this one in the video, same process and all 👍
I have a 2021 skyactiv G 2.0 automatic 150 horse power.
Also i live in the Netherlands and for some reason my 150 version only goes up to 165 according to tuners as the previous 165 version would go to 180? i thought all these engines where the same hardware wise?
sick car dude where is the side skirt from??
Thanks!! I got them used but you can find the same skirts off eBay
What cold air intake do you have?
I have the AEM CAI for the 3rd gen 14-18 2.0 I don't think they still make it though. I got mine used on marketplace.
like the mustache
Thanks!!
This 'sauce' shop doesn't seem to exist
His information is in the description
Will this work for a cx 5
Does this make it more fuel efficient
Yes it does work for the Cx-5, as far a fuel economy some people do report having better gas mileage, but you'd have to reach out to Justin to see if he can tune specifically for gas milage
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
👍👍👍
One spark.... hopefully your using a Brass punch 😮
Yeah one spark and I would have been Zoom Zoom Boom 😅
Q tamaño son las llantas y los rines Gracias
Tengo Konig Hypergram 17x8 +35 y tengo espaciadores de 10 mm en la parte trasera. Mis llantas son 215/45R17 👍
what hp figures you managed to reach including all the mods?
I haven't dynoed the car yet but it feels in the range of a stock-ish k20 civic si, I would say around the 180-185 at the crank, maybe 150-155whp. But that's me guessing from what the car feels like
Is there a tune for the 2.5 MZR?
There are tunes for the MZR engine, but this tuner does only Skyactiv, I think DRTune does MZR if I'm not mistaken.
Jack stands: ❌
Jumbo Jenga: ✔
😅😅🤣🤣
Have you tried 93 octane?
Yes! I'm running 94 octane👍
i have a cx5 automatic that can get tune ????
Yes for sure! Reach out to Justin he can help you out!
Is the link to Justin's TH-cam page not working for anyone else? I keep getting an error 404
I updated the link, it should work now!
What engine model/code is this?
It's a 2.0 Skyactiv engine
Can this be done on a gen 4?
Yes Justin the tuner has a 4th gen himself, he can tune any skyactiv!
will it work with skyactiv x
That's a great question you'd have to check with Justin a the Sauce Tune
Hey did you ever find out if it would work with Skyactiv X?
How much did the tune end up costing?
The price varies but $200 for NA $250 for boosted vehicles. Software & Hardware price not included
@@supermazda3 Canadian? thats hella cheap
@@tatebarnum731 $200USD for NA & $250USD for turbo. Prices change

This is not skyactiv
How is it not 😂
my mazda 3 with the 2.5MZR it blews its motor at 345k😞
Oh no! I'm sorry to hear that! Hopefully you can get another Mazda 3 or replace the engine!
@@DrivingProduction i would 100% another mazda 3 very reliable only problems i have had was the tcm before the motor blew
2.5s are everywhere in Mazdas and Fords. If you got a local pick n pull, you can easily find a good condition one for cheap.
Can this be applied to a Mazda 6 2.5 NA?
Yes if it's the skyactiv model
