      I get cringe responses feeling bad for the person or feeling annoyed by the stupidity, never do I laughed though… it’s just extremely painful/sad/annoying content to watch for me… thank you for the video now I at least know what others see in it because it was a mystery to me 😅. If you haven't watched it, I'd highly recommend "Nathan for You" as a fantastic cringe comedy. It's probably closer to Borat or Ali G in that its cringe comes from the main character playing a version of himself and interacting with people who assume his sincerity.

    It occurs to me that there's also a form of (for lack of a better term) meta-cringe, where I end up cringing at someone who is cringing at someone, because the "cringer" is cringing over something totally mundane, fine, or age-appropriate, and is thus revealing themselves to be immature and deeply insecure. Cringing at young kids is "cringe." Cringing at people for being gay, trans, disabled, or for having a hobby you think is "nerdy" or eccentric is cringe.

    • @ana-isabel
      @ana-isabel  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I couldn't agree with this more. And the term "meta-cringe" is perfect, haha. In certain cases, who we point at and call "cringe" says a lot more about us than the person we deem as such.

    Honestly, Peep Show is to me like the holy cow of cringe comedy. The secondhand embarrassment value of it is literally overwhelming (binge-watching is almost masochism imo) , augmented by the POV camera shots the show uses and the classic dryness of British humour. A peep show of the miserable ups and downs of two narcissistic, socially inept dudes (differently from Curb your Enthusiasm, the shown is written so that we initially emphatize with them but eventually realize what awful human beings they are... and we still can't get enough!) . A friend of mine actually quit watching cause he couldn't handle the cringe.

    Another thoughtful and well presented essay. You're one of the few TH-camrs that I will happily sit through multiple unskippable 15 second ad inserts. :-) I think you're right on the money with the last analysis about cringe fest humour, it's more about feeling superior that looking for any deeper insight into humanity. There was a Canadian TV comedian named Rick Mercer who used to do a regular piece called "Talking to Americans" where he traveled to cities in the USA to show how little Americans know about Canada. That's low hanging fruit for humour (those pieces are on TH-cam). The first one or two segments were amusing but after that you kinda want a mercy rule as it is like shooting fish in a barrel. Nice work, and BTW you have nice clear and articulate voice for your voice overs.

      @ana-isabel  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much! 💕 And yes, I feel like the comedic/entertainment factor declines the more "low-hanging fruit" a "cringey" subject is. I hadn't seen Rick Mercer and his segments before reading your comment - though after checking out a few of his clips on TH-cam, I agree it does run a little stale after fooling the nth American on some false Canadian trivia. (I guess it also has to do with the repetitive format though!)
      And thanks - I owe it all to my Blue Snowball mic for making me sound decently professional hahaha.

    One show that I though had a lot of cringe comedy was Louie when it was on FX. That’s show was had like some of the most awkward people and situations on it, I don’t think they stream it anywhere anymore unless you buy it but it was really good in my opinion, showed how crazy and awkward people can be.
    Btw amazing video! Never thought how cringe is actually a form of comedy

    For me cringe content is almost like that opposite to the perfection we usually see on curated content.
    After watching TV, movies, edited youtube video with the mess-ups edited out, it's nice to remind yourself that people are human. And I'm not looking at it as "I'm glad I don't mess up as badly as this person" it's more like seeing "heavy cringe" just balances out the total lack of cringe in MOST content.

    • @ana-isabel
      @ana-isabel  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This! :D While I admit I also enjoy the schadenfreude side of things haha - it's nice and somewhat therapeutic to see a side of people behind the scripts and filters and heavy edits of most online content. I'm thinking of popular TH-camrs in particular (or content creators I follow); seeing them have their awkward moments can be kinda charming.

    i was recently the victim of targeted harassment by a person acting on behalf of a group of people (their friends, according to them) over some perceived slight that they refused to acknowledge their error on... i used the word "lie" in a way other than they were used to so they used that to justify abusing me, resulting in a lot of cringey behaviour from me due to various mental issues i have. and they just kept going, frequently mentioning how they and their friends were laughing at me... it ended with me reporting them and their account got locked so at least they got punished for it, but it was so horrifying for me to be abused in such a way. they kept trying to gaslight me that i wasn't being abused/harassed as well... like, wtf?! i hope they get away from their clearly toxic friends and realise how horrible of a person they were being. they even admitted to and bragged about not having sympathy, acting like having it was a bad thing... just... no. and now i have to spend time and effort to recover from that... i _hate_ how many emotional scars i have :/

    There's a fine line between actually cringe and comedy. Shows I would recommend that are similar to The Office "cringe" comedy are Trailer Park Boys , People Just Do Nothing (BBC), What We Do in the Shadows (show and movie), Arrested Development, Extras (BBC), and Spaced (Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright). Chris Lilley of Australia has also made multiple shows like this called Ja'mie: Private School Girl, Angry Boys, Summer Heights High, etc.

I know its got Pegg and Frost, so I'm instantly sold. Trailer Park Boys and PJDN both have that awkward mockumentary style I love so imma check these out too! :)
      As for Chris Lilley's works, I remember trying to get into them in high school (I think Angry Boys had just come out and it was a hot topic), though they didn't quite gel with me then. Might give 'em a revisit to see if my opinion changes :p

    When I think of peak cringe, Nathan for You is the show that comes to mind. It follows real-life personality Nathan Fielder as he gives failing businesses a ridiculous idea to stay afloat, which makes for a lot of Borat-style satire around business and marketing. Fielder also plays up a persona for the show that makes it really hard to tell when he's acting and when he's being genuine with his thoughts, which kind of ups the cringe. If you haven't already, that's a must-watch for cringe lovers! Also glad to see some love for Contrapoints

    My sister who has a mental disability was really into anime dance videos when she was in high school, and liked to do the dances. Shed do it at school not caring about people being around and it didnt take long before her class mates started recording her and making compilations of her. She eventually stopped going to school, for the most part stopped going outside and is basically a neet now. Not that like that was the only factor in that but when I think about this kinda stuff it makes me mad. Kinda a bit to throw out there but idk I wanted to vent it I guess. I'm so sorry to hear this. I believe a previous commenter brought this up but seeing the incredibly mean-spirited, unwarranted "cringe compilations" online (typically punching down on vulnerable people) creates an almost "meta-cringe" reaction - where I'm wincing more at the miserable person who'd go out of their way to create something that hateful.
