Your explanation about the keys is the perfect explanation as to why I find watching speedruns of RE1 more entertaining than 2. There's just so many different ways to tackle the mansion. You start off with a bunch of options. Whereas 2, you're stuck on the streets until you get to the station, then stuck on that particular route right at the beginning.
i'd say resi monsters are more kronenberg than they are lovecraftian they aren't creatures of the unknown, far beyond human understanding. they're jsut gross monster things
Very well researched video, the extensive analysis of the level design and especially the comparisons between the two routes display a lot of effort. Some of your finest work IMO, thank you!
As much as I loved the remake's visuals and gameplay, the lack of claire and Leon meetings really killed the story for me. They had so much opportunity to join up the overlap in a way that improved the characters relationship. Instead, they see each other at the start, and the end... and we expect to beleive that they are friends now? Like why did they remove the overlap that existed in the original game? Made me sad...
I felt the same way when I played it. By the end of the original (as a 10 year old) I felt a relationship between them, be it running into each other in the office (or hall) then calling each other on the radio..by the end I felt like they were TRYING to escape together. At the end of the second one it was like..wait where’s Claire? We just sayin fuck her..? The dynamic between them was completely absent in the remake. The remakes of 2 and 3, for me, were actually quite disappointing. And I was so excited for RE2r.
Tbh I felt even in the original RE2, it was so Scooby-Doo-like that every time they're running into each other then they're like 'Ok let's split up again'. "Hey Claire, young girl with no training, it's my first day on the job but I'm taking it really seriously so I want to make sure I protect everybody. Okay so let's split up." "Hey Leon so I've got a kid with me now." "Okay let's split up again." "Hey Leon there are giant toxic plants and a mutant maniac running around now. Oh you wanna split up again?" Then later he insists on tough girl Ada staying with him because it's not safe alone lol. Like dude you just left a college student and a little kid to run around the outbreak on their own hahahaha
Excellent work here. In the first episode, I thought that you spent far too much time explaining all possible paths for the sake of completeness rather than as support for an argument. Here, you strike a perfect balance: you explain enough of the game to allow people who never played RE2 to follow along, but you don't bog the script down enough to where it detracts from the other areas. Awesome video!
Hell yeah, Claire A, Leon B! When I got my first PlayStation, it came with a used copy of Resi 2 that only had the Claire disc. Years later, when I found out there was a disc that made Leon playable, I flipped my shit in excitement.
SJ Webster, when I first played RE2 I also got it used, but the difference with my situation was the Leon disc was damaged, so every time I'd try to go through the door to get to the hallway that leads to the S.T.A.R.S. office right near the statue puzzle the screen would just stay black after the door animation. The music would still play but other than that the game was completely unresponsive after that. I wasn't able to play leon's campaign until years later when I got the GameCube version, which is probably my favorite version of the game, but that's besides the point. Lol
I can see where you're coming from, even agree with most of what you say. Resident Evil 2 gave me an incredible first impression. It was genuinely scary here and there especially when Mr. X showed up unexpectedly in the B scenario, and the storytelling was a strong improvement over the first game, which made playing the game feel more meaningful and engaging as I wanted to see these likeable characters survive through to the end. Admittedly though after four playthroughs, the game wears out its welcome. Aside from the A/B scenarios, the game doesn't do a whole lot different from the original game and the second half is surprisingly underwhelming. I didn't notice this on my first playthrough, but the game really starts to feel brief and rather anticlimactic once you get to the laboratory. There were also a few cheap angles so that a zombie could leach on to you with little issues which was a little annoying but nothing bad. Can I see why some may prefer the original? I guess so considering its less linear structure and stronger focus on survival gameplay, but I still hold 2 as the stronger entry. It doesn't feel as slow and clunky, I enjoy the story a lot more, and the difficulty is a lot more fair albeit a bit on the easy side. RE3: Nemesis is the best of the original trilogy though.
This line: "Even if a key only opens two doors, that's still two places that you have to choose between going to" suddenly reminded me of The Stanley Parable.
RE2 is such a classic that I never really thought about its shortcomings much, especially in regards to its linearity. I give you kudos for making me think about that. I will say though that I did always dislike the sewer/lab parts of the game and wished that the police station had just been bigger.
It's always refreshing seeing other people and their takes on one of my favorite games. After breaking the game down to the mechanics and optimizations, even going down to taking frame-data on the very first section of the game to try to manipulate the only part of the game that's truly randomized (In the Japanese version; chance for extra spawns in first room that slows down your movement slightly. Both versions; the gate after Kendo shop can break in one hit or several); it's easy to forgive and forget the minor niggles that can come up with the casual player. Example: You didn't like the linearity of the game, but it makes it a very convenient speed game, seeing how to free up an item slot, all you need to do is activate an extra door that is *always* on the way to where you are supposed to go. Also the abundance of ammo and healing items is just great for always having backup safe strats.
FINALLY! I was seriously wondering if you were ever going to continue this series.. I found it very interesting and have been waiting months. THANK YOU!
This was interesting, looking forward to the next part. I love the diagrams, it's really fun to see the flow of the game in that kind of form. I have a theory (backed up by a single, tenuous shred of evidence) that Capcom originally planned a different copy of the card suit keys for each character at the very least. I'd like to see that fixed in the remake, if it ever appears. Ultimately though, my main complaint with RE2 is that it squanders a lot of opportunities to do really interesting things, wasting a lot of potential. 1) Puzzle gameplay took a giant dive in quality and quantity from the first game. There are far fewer logic/number puzzles in the game (particularly in the final stretch, as you mention) and a lot of the fetch quest activity in the game borders on pointless, especially since the enemies are far less threatening overall than they were in RE1. 2) Nothing is really ever done with the mechanic of the two characters having their own events and choices impacting on each other. It's played about with when you close the shutters with the cable, and with the other two choices you mention, but nothing else really comes of it. This could have been really interesting but looks like a casualty of the development hell it went through, so In the end it's only really impactful in story terms, since it goes towards explaining how certain things happen throughout the course of the game. Consider the main fuse part in the lab as an example of all of this - the item you need first (fuse case) is in the same room as the first mechanism you need to take it to, then the final objective is two rooms away from that, with no danger along the way. What exactly was the point of that exercise? There's an argument that it's a pacing tool (it comes after a boss in scenario A so could serve as a breather) but you have a cutscene to buffer already, and a safe zone with lots of ammo that both serve that purpose handily. Scenario B is supposed to be more difficult and not give you that time and space to breathe - but it just recycles exactly the same activity as well. Maddening.
This 2017 video was about a 1998 game that I managed to beat in 2021. Finished Leon A / Claire B (on Easy) and was quite impressed at all the little differences. Now I'm working on my Claire A / Leon B (on Normal). While the changes are small, I'm really impressed at how they're shuffling cutscene placement, items locations and overall game progession.
This game felt massive in 98. 2 discs, A and B scenarios, new enemies and weapons on subsequent play throughs. Worth the 99 bucks the game was priced at. Amazing sequel and game. I think it may have been impossible to recapture the original games tense atmosphere, unraveling plot, and claustrophobic atmosphere of the mansion. Ammo was sparse making it a true survival game unlike Re2s over the top action elements that were fun, but subtracted from the survival in “survival horror”.
Just finished my first run of Leon A(?) in the remake, and dropped in to see a breakdown of the original. Man- it's pretty crazy seeing the differences!
FINALLY, someone who isn't blinded by nostalgia and can critique RE2 for once, its TOO much like the original RE1 and spencer mansion is 10,000 times better than RPD and overall RE2 is just too easy in terms of challenge, RE2 really could use an extra difficulty mode. Now i'm crossing my fingers for RE3 please do that poor game some justice.. THAT GAME IS AWESOME. And holy shit, you just pin-pointed the fact that the linear level design with action is something that started off as early as RE2! RE4 merely committed fully to that i guess.
I agree with you on this. RE2 is a masterpiece, but it's overhyped and overrated in certain terms. It is, in the end, simplified version of the original game with more focus on action, overall polish and character performances. And what else they could do in less than a year, when they needed to build it up from ground up after scrapping the original version ? Of course they had to use the similar form what the original used in order to save time to get it out to the market.
Dirty Deed Indeed The main problem i have with RPD Mansion is that it feels so not threatening. like they just forgot to make it creepy. Re 1.5's James Cameron blue light atmosphere was fine idk why they didn't go with it. Specner mansion was a ghoulish mansion straight out of a saw movie, its simply too unique to be replicated without being Inferior.
Again I agree with you haha. 1.5 may have looked a bit dull in places, but it was unfinished and lacked the detail and final polish of the final product. When you look some of the grey hallways and that stairwell, surely they won't put the game out like that, it would be dull to play. I always though that the outdoor area on the factory area looked insanely sinister, especially that place, where was something like 10x zombies lying on the ground. With some tweaks here and there, they could have created another unique and great map/scenery for the game and have something truly fresh to offer. The RE2 that we eventually got was great game nevertheless, but like you said, it doesn't feel threatening or creepy. While the mansion was ghoulish ghosthouse-style place with mad scientist puzzles, RE2 could have been on the industrian nightmare-style with blue and grey hue tones and overall darker atmosphere and focus on the sort of ''siege'' and zombie mass control to give that desperation.
I've beaten RE2 at least 20 times and gotten the best rank on both LeonA and ClaireB. I have never played LeonB / ClaireA because until just now, I didn't know how to do it. I didn't know you could start a new game on disc 2. I am now extremely excited to play it this way.
Very informative series. I never knew Kamiya was involved with RE2. I really need to look into his early work. Gotta say, I've never been a fan of the tank controls (apart from outbreak but that's a bit different in concept in some neat ways imo) in the old games but I'm really considering it after watching these first 2 videos. Funny enough I love the tank controls in Onimusha Warlords and 2. Never understood why I don't here.
Dunno if anyone's cleared this up earlier in the comment section or not, but in regards to the Claire A part of the truck blocking the door to the jail cells, she gets the Heart Key but has no way to move the truck nor does she have any business trying to get past it as she meets Sherry on the other side where some construction is going on - because the A scenarios happened before B scenario, similar gameplay be damned.
11 minutes in: This flexibility of stories, this effort put into having two solid, coherent, alternate campaigns depending on if you play Leon A/Claire B or Claire A/Leon B is why I will always defend RE2 classic as vastly superior to its overhyped 2019 "reimagining", which couldn't be arsed to even attempt this level of complexity despite taking so many years to develop.
Loved this game back in the 90s I played at least 2 campaigns everyday when I dropped out of high school and had nothing to do Ended up learning every room in the game I remember guiding a schoolmate from start to finish over the phone while playing other game Also I made vhs tapes with all the cutscenes of the first 3 games and watched them over and over again It was the same with RE3 Now I feel really old
I think the reason why I still adore this game so much is because I played it immediately after REmake and despite the major drop in graphics it still felt like a blood relative. Less beautiful but just as elegant. I’m glad I didn’t skip this and RE3 and jump straight into RE4 because there’s just so much gold in Raccoon City.
RE2 is the golden reason why I hate DLC. I mean niggling story inconsistencies aside, here’s a triple aaa game which offered you four unique play throughs whose only cost was to beat the game. I am dreading the RE2 remake because you know, you just KNOW they’re gonna split it up into DLC. But then the best part is we all get to be called entitled whiners when we bring it up. But I digress, awesome vid for an awesome series! P.S. very surprised you haven’t done a quick video about the supposed DMC5 leaks.
Multi Tails Power True indeed! I even used the word ‘supposed’ to convey that. However as this is the man who squeezes a DMC reference in every vid, it would be nice to see a speculation vid from him. If only for fun!
RE2 was not a AAA game. AAA is a mutation of the 7th Gen. You can see inklings of it sprouting up in the 6th Gen, but was cetainly not a thing in the 5th Gen.
After playing the resident evil 2 REmake this video is even more fascinating since I never played the original. Good video Charlie, and everyone if you haven't already go play the resident evil 2 remake it's amazing.
I keep forgetting that Resi 2 had basically four campaigns. I imagine that's why it took this long to get this particular vid out, eh? Either way, excellent analysis. It makes me wonder if the RE2 remake (if it ever happens) will expand on these alternate scenarios and maybe create even more unique situations.
Dude, please PLEASE do analyze. RE Code Veronica. That game almost always gets passed on, but I think it stands head and shoulders with mainline games in terms of design.
I know I'm four years late to the debate, but if I had the keys to the kingdom I would've made key cards akin to mgs be the keys in this game. Find specific IDs of personnel or just a simple level 1-5 type system. I'm sure somebody else has said this, but I still want to put my piece out there.
Wow, I thought you'd given up on the road to rocket launcher, and then you publish it on my birthday lol). On top of that, this video reflects about 95% of my own thoughts about the game. Thanks for the quality content, keep up the good work)
Played the original trilogy for the first time last week. Got to be honest, after finding out that Raccoon city was being invaded by Zombies, I was really disappointed finding out that I was going to be stuck inside a Police Station for most of the game.
Considering holding up inside a sturdy building was their only real option to try to get their shit together, it makes sense. Honestly, I find RE1's harder to believe than 2 because RE1 the characters were basically kept inside the mansion because of a few dogs. At least the whole of Raccoon City being after you is a more acceptable reason tbh. RE3 has you running around the city streets sure but we see how that turned out for Jill not to mention by time 3 came around, Jill knew full-well her ONLY option at that point was either death or trying to escape and she was right considering Raccoon City got nuked. You can tell both Dead Rising and RE were both heavily influenced by Dawn of the Dead/Night of the Living Dead. Especially Dead Rising with Dawn of the Dead, holding up in a mall during a zombie outbreak.

So: Shinji made the first game, Kamiya made the 2nd. but hideki made devil may cry, and Shinji made Dino crisis?
Dunno if anyone's cleared this up earlier in the comment section or not, but in regards to the Claire A part of the truck blocking the door to the jail cells, she gets the Heart Key but has no way to move the truck nor does she have any business trying to get past it as she meets Sherry on the other side where some construction is going on - because the A scenarios happened before B scenario, similar gameplay be damned.
You never fail to produce awesome, thoughtful, funny videos. Keep up the excellent work!
Claire A Leon B master race
subscribed , turned notifications on , waiting for episode 3 of the series . keep up the great work 👍
11 minutes in: This flexibility of stories, this effort put into having two solid, coherent, alternate campaigns depending on if you play Leon A/Claire B or Claire A/Leon B is why I will always defend RE2 classic as vastly superior to its overhyped 2019 "reimagining", which couldn't be arsed to even attempt this level of complexity despite taking so many years to develop.
0:44 there we go
Content like this is an Ideal I aspire to reach.
Excellent video!
The soundtrack in this game is GOLD!
Incredible work friend, keep it up
Glad I found this channel
been waiting so long for this!
Loved this game back in the 90s
I played at least 2 campaigns everyday when I dropped out of high school and had nothing to do
Ended up learning every room in the game
I remember guiding a schoolmate from start to finish over the phone while playing other game
Also I made vhs tapes with all the cutscenes of the first 3 games and watched them over and over again
It was the same with RE3
Now I feel really old
It's been so long I forgot you were doing this series.
P.S. very surprised you haven’t done a quick video about the supposed DMC5 leaks.
mortvia I agree with you
mortvia I mean they're just leaks, not quite conformation
Multi Tails Power True indeed! I even used the word ‘supposed’ to convey that. However as this is the man who squeezes a DMC reference in every vid, it would be nice to see a speculation vid from him. If only for fun!
I look at stuff like Assignment Ada and think "in modern day, this is DLC"
RE5 is proof of that.
RE2 was not a AAA game. AAA is a mutation of the 7th Gen. You can see inklings of it sprouting up in the 6th Gen, but was cetainly not a thing in the 5th Gen.
I've been waiting for this!
It's been a while mein only friend
another fantastic discussion video well done
Great video as always dood
This series is such tasty candy to me. Thanks, TH-cam, for not burying this one too far in my reccs.
Fantastic analysis. Looking forward to the rest of the series, especially the RE1 remake.
After playing the resident evil 2 REmake this video is even more fascinating since I never played the original. Good video Charlie, and everyone if you haven't already go play the resident evil 2 remake it's amazing.
The original has more to offer
Thank you! Can't wait for the RE3 video.
Sweet! I actually just watched the RE1 video a few days ago.
Really good work man,
Hope Resident Evil 3 comes quicker then the first one
When doing a video to do with re3 you might have to change the title to "Road to the magnum"
More like *"Road to the freeze Rounds"* or *"Road to the Rail Cannon"*
10 months late, but i believe RE0 and RE:CV don't give you a rocket launcher either. @@GodofWhoopass
hey you should keep doing this series it's very entertaining.
would Code Veronica be included in this series? loving it so far
No he’ll never do that

Can't believe 7 people didn't correct you:/

@@ThePolishMermaid can't believe that people give a shit two years later
and then the remaked the game and instead of basically 4 scenarios, you really only get one.. but they still call it Scenario 1 and 2
all your reviews are hilarious i love them
interestingly, while claire a leon b is the canon route, the novelization by S.D. Perry actually follows Leon A Claire B. fun fact.
I cant believe hunk and tofu and the battle mode never even got a mention.
Really good video man
I keep forgetting that Resi 2 had basically four campaigns. I imagine that's why it took this long to get this particular vid out, eh?
Either way, excellent analysis. It makes me wonder if the RE2 remake (if it ever happens) will expand on these alternate scenarios and maybe create even more unique situations.
Not really 4, but the same 2 campaigns slightly altered.
6 campaigns.
"Lovecraftian"
Word has lost absolutely all meaning.
TWC isn’t that a romance mod for Minecraft?
TWC i mean just look at Birkin's final form, looking like a real G, literally...
Lovecraft is the Dark Souls of horror writers.
``deformed tentacle monster`` is not enough to classify something as Lovecraftian, not even close...

I feel as if I've come to closer to understanding what makes for valuable game design after watching this series so far.
Dude, please PLEASE do analyze. RE Code Veronica. That game almost always gets passed on, but I think it stands head and shoulders with mainline games in terms of design.
Damn it's been a while. Hell yeah!
You forgot the Hank mission.
Samir Hussain HUNK
Ahh, the hidden "Hank" campaign. You run through the police station armed only with propane tanks.
Damien Lockwood I tell you HWAT
Damien Lockwood ah, so I wasn’t the only one who thought of hill
I liked the Mark Brown-esque item maps. Good vid, Brit.
Looking forward to the Resi lore vid. We need answers on that truck!
RE2's streamlined map design and super generous resources really hurt the experience for me. The remake was a huge improvement in that regard.
Whaddya know, you WERENT lying in discord about this.
I know I'm four years late to the debate, but if I had the keys to the kingdom I would've made key cards akin to mgs be the keys in this game. Find specific IDs of personnel or just a simple level 1-5 type system. I'm sure somebody else has said this, but I still want to put my piece out there.
Like Dino Crisis 1?
Wow, I thought you'd given up on the road to rocket launcher, and then you publish it on my birthday lol). On top of that, this video reflects about 95% of my own thoughts about the game. Thanks for the quality content, keep up the good work)
Nice work! Keep them coming! :)
great stuff, dude!
Another great video. Can't wait till you do RE3 6 months from now! ;)
Thanks for doing well
I didn’t even get this in my sub box i’ve been waiting for it for ages
Played the original trilogy for the first time last week.
Got to be honest, after finding out that Raccoon city was being invaded by Zombies, I was really disappointed finding out that I was going to be stuck inside a Police Station for most of the game.
And then you get Dead Rising 10 years later, and it still takes place in a mall.
The more things change the more they stay the same.
Aya ya and then dead rising 3 and 4 came out and everyone was like "I miss the mall :("
That's why RE3 is my favorite. Well, that and Nemesis.
Just pop 3 in
Considering holding up inside a sturdy building was their only real option to try to get their shit together, it makes sense.
