I have 0 nostaogia for resident evil. My introduction to the series was a java mobile phone turn-based game with the one puzzle I've never beaten (both cuz of how obtuse it was and lack of later access to the game)-and I was trained on silent hill, too!-, then resident evil 3 (do note I was aware of the game series and had even watched the 3 movies which I found went from somewhat ok to dumb stupid fun to actually fucking balmy) which made me too anxious to play, then RE4, RE7 and RE2make before going back to REmake. All this is to say believe me that my opinion on this series was not biased by any prior affinity, and believe you me I found REmake to be really fucking cool to play. Got a bit more tedious as I acquired resources and was encouraged to fight through enemies later on, but I had a ton of fun with the game. I think I kinda agree that the other remakes could have been done that way and I would have liked them all the same. RE2make has the best zombie interactions imo, so that I might miss, but honestly no one would miss the re3make we got (except the weird kinky people who got off to that one scene with the bug, but they don't really count as people in my opinion).

30:50 - None of the doors have loading times they "need." In early tests, players thought the game felt weird without the loading doors, so they added them back in purely for the look and feel of them. Several times though there are potential moments where a zombie or monster can bust one down and the remake flexes is GameCube tech by letting you forevermore cross those broken-down doorways without any loading times at all.

@@caliggyjack7480False. Item boxes were removed because the devs never wanted them to begin with, not because fans disliked them. Fans never had an issue with them. The devs always wanted to do the Alone in the Dark / Sweet Home thing, but PS1 disc and RAM limitations forbade it.

    • @KT-rq9id
      @KT-rq9id ปีที่แล้ว

The loading doors is a homage to sweet home. RE is essentially Sweet Home and Alone in the dark. Without homages to those, it isnt RE. Without the loading doors, it's not Resident Evil. It was immersive, how the doors switch to first person, each door having a unique visual and sound, and it created tension at times not knowing what's on the other side (ie Code Veronica). Who cares if modern tech could do without-- it's not RE if it doesnt have the damn loading doors. that's why RE2 REimagined 2019 felt nothing like Resident Evil.

When this game dropped it was clear to the fandom that this is the definitive RE experience (and the definitive Remake at that), crazy to think that two years later RE4 was out and for a game that became so iconic it had such an controversial response within the community at the time.

Inconsistent uploads. TGBS doesn't upload with a consistent schedule, so it's hard to draw a consistent viewership. Somecallmejohnny, who arguably inspired a lot of TH-cam reviewers who had faster growth than him, has the same issue.
Also, quickly, to idrinkmilk, you have the association backwards. Those channels don't have higher viewership because of better production values, they have better production values because higher viewership gives them more money and thus more resources to use on better mics and video quality. Consistent uploads get more views, more views get better equipment and software, better production values help keep schedules more consistent. Everything cycles back around.

Now that both are out and only one turned out fine, Capcom and their defenders are calling them "reimaginings."
RE3 Remake is not made for RE3 fans and especially RE3 1999 fans. RE3 2020 is literally Baby's 1st RE Game. All the challenge and difficulty from even RE2 2019 is gone. No real puzzles, no S+ rank, no Ink ribbons, and poor Nemesis is totally neutered.

It doesn't just look better than a 6 year old game, it looks better than most games of its time. But I also respect it as a remake because it's a game that works as a distinct experience, with enough new and different to justify both versions existing. It feels like it was made with care; it didn't take assets and graphics from some franchise sequel and then quickly slap them onto an older game. You have to rotate it with more pressure and eventually you need to apply more and more force and that can lead to it breaking entirely.
But actually - you can just carry the other handle which has a square shaped rod attached and insert it into the mechanism to open any other broken door. Which could be a cool addition to inventory management too.

Great to see this series return, probably the best breakdown of how these Resi games work. I do have one question/request however. Can you make / Is there already somewhere a comprehensive yet understandable guide describing how the branching choices in this game are laid out? Much like the flowchart you provide to graph out exploration I want one that plots out every little cutscene that can be found and what other cutscenes they affect.
For example - (based on the original Resi 1) At the start of Jill's campain once she separates from Barry there are 3 possible places she could meet him next (Forest's balcony, Jill sandwich scene or back in the main hall) and getting one excludes the others for that playthrough. Or when 'investigating the dining hall' Jill can instead keep trying to return to the main hall until after a few tries the zombie bursts in from the other door without Jill having to explore through that one herself. Resi 1 is full of these situations which leads to a complicated web of possibilities in each playthrough for each character but I don't see a clear way of navigating these possibilities anywhere. The closest is to find a full in depth walkthrough guide that is aiming for specific endings.
Would be nice to have one for RE2's zapping system too, though that would not be nearly as important/useful. There are still a few things that can be missed however.

I love this video and there are many things I would love to talk to you about concerning Resident EviI. I want to address something you mention toward the end about Birkin's relationship with Alexia. In a way REmake was giving you a backdrop to their relationship similar to how they contextualized Wesker and Chris. While Alexia was young, It has been established that she was a prodigy and that Umbrella had given her enough weight that she was put on a level that could realistically make an egotist like Birkin feel threatened in having his standing and recognition overshadowed among the researcher's circle. The last he had heard of her, she was on her way to some major breakthroughs and it isn't unheard of for one of them to reappear after years with their new project. That actually seems to be the norm for them. Anyway, I have been an RE fan since 96 and REmake has been my favorite of all since it came out, as one who has beaten it countless times and still continues to do so on occasion to wind down, I appreciate your analysis and suggestions on the subject.

Well they could fix this by keep the camera behind your back for a sec or two until you go to the next fixed angle change. And for the animation, well yes, I have to say the zombie bite animation is top notch in recent zombies game. Right now I cannot think of a way they can both show the animation but doesn't make the camera snap like crazy.

About your suggested chart to avoid guardhouse linearity, the problem is that swaping the helmet key from plant 42 for the metal object, is that the continous time spent on mansion inmediatily after getting the helmet key will fatigue the player. I agree with the idea about that the guardhouse being paralallel with caves on chart. But maybe there's a new area / key missing in replacement of the full emblem to unlock the courtyard, thought that would be a great idea expand the area where you use the masks to get the emblem to make a transition to another area instead of the return to mansion in your suggested structure

So much potential is here, and with next gen resources and tech, I can only begin to imagine what the design can achieve. RE1R really felt like the starting point for more games like it to come, and it even proved that it could be popular in modern times when it got re-released on pc to great sales and acclaim, but sadly it just wasn't meant to be. Instead, it was more like a final send off to this particular kind of game. I guess if it was gonna go out anyway, at least it got to go out with a high note.

I guess Hunters appearing is meant to make up for this but then that just takes the strategy of minimizing backtracking or using fuel wisely, and replaces it with more straight forward shooting/running. The one dangerous zombie also stops appearing after you get the masks which only serves to make the second half of the game feel even more unfinished.

Im pretty sure Tyrant2 just has the chance to knock back the missile, thats its based on RNG. Also, as far as Birkin talking about owning Alexia, she manufactured the T-Veronica, which is what i imagine he's writing about. Doesnt necessarily make it any less awkwardly placed but i think canonically it makes sense especially because of Birkin and Weskers supposed rivalry with each other and how they both end up being shown up by Alexia before she gets in da tube iirc

RE1 Remake and Pathologic 2 are the only remake games that got everything right in my book. Respect the gameplay and soul of the original game and just add minor tweaks to make it better. RE2 Remake is good but it is a third person game, should have been fixed camera like RE1 Remake

I had a Dreamcast, choosing to get that for Christmas over waiting 6 months to get the OG Xbox on my birthday (saved my own cash to get it anyway), and the Dreamcast versions of RE2 and 3 were the best ports IMO. Maybe it was finally owning the games i was, prior to, disallowed from playing, yet still did via friends and rentals lol.

32:49 - "it doesn't just look better than a six year old game, it looks better than most games of it's time"
My dude, this game looks better than most of the last 18 years worth of releases.
It is only very, very recently, like maybe since RE7 was released, have games been consistently able to look *as good* as this game from 2002. Even today the environmental lighting and details are honestly fantastic. A lot of it comes down to framing, and if you frame a decent shot anything made in high budget games today can look this good, but you'd need to use photo mode, it's not built into the game like it is here. You don't get those shots like these in games because utility and function trump artistic direction and composition. REmake2 probably has just as good of environmental detail, but it doesn't have shots like 10:08 or 26:49 unless you take yourself out of the game.
Man, I still remember opening EGM and seeing screenshots of this game and just... I mean I'd seen Code:Veronica, I'd seen Final Fantasy X, I knew games were getting better looking all the time, but still I was very, very confused when everybody was praising Halo to high heaven and I was like "yeah, it's bigger and better than N64 and Dreamcast, but it still **looks** like a game"
REmake didn't look like a game. It looked like a movie.
18 years on and I am convinced we're never going to see such a huge leap in visual quality as that jump from 2000 to 2002.
