    Hey guys, before making this video I looked up all the reasons I could find for Nemesis being made into Resi 3 and not being released as a spin-off. The explenations I could find a source for were mentioned in the video. Here are the claims I could NOT find a concrete verified source on, despite people bringing them up:
    -Sony cut a deal with Capcom to have all numbered Resident Evil games on Playstation.
    -Code Veronica was intended to be Resident Evil 3. (Although there is evidence out there that there was another PS1 title starring HUNK on a cruise ship which WAS intended to be 3 before getting canceled).
    As I said in the video, the why isn't really relevant to the topic at hand, but if any of you can find me some sources for these rumours I'd be very interested!

      Here's what I was able to dig up so far. First Code Veronica:
      "Here are the hard facts we know so far: the game is the true sequel to Resident Evil 2, though Capcom has abandoned its traditional numbering scheme (at least for this title)."
      www.ign.com/articles/1998/10/06/three-words-resident-evil-official
      As for RE3:
      "Cruise Ship BIOHAZARD 3, as it's now known the BH3 directed by Hideki Kamiya was unrelated to "LAST ESCAPE", which was then referred as "BIOHAZARD Gaiden". The director of "Gaiden" was Kazuhiro Aoyama, a game designer who was responsible for designing the levels in BH and BH2. The rest of the team, with the exception of the programmers and sound crew, was comprised of newly hired staff. In place of FLAGSHIP, newcomer Yasuhisa Kawamura was chosen to write the scenario and assist Aoyama in designing the game.
      "Gaiden" was intended to be a small "indie" game made in a short time span. This means that it would be made by a small team with a restricted budget and even though the scenario writer Kawamura was new, he would be capable of handling the scenario. However, the course of the series development began to change when the teams received word about the impending transition to the new PlayStation 2. The Kamiya-directed BH3 was targeted for the PlayStation 1. By the time the game launched, the market would have shifted towards the PS2. Furthermore, the PS2 was a powerful system and without sufficient time for development, the "BIOHAZARD quality" that was expected would not be achievable. During certain period of time, "Gaiden" was also referred in some development documents as "BIOHAZARD 1.9" or "BIO HAZARD 1.9&2.1" due to the game events taking place before and after BH2.
      Forced to make a change in plans, Okamoto announced to the team that "BIOHAZARD Gaiden was going to become the last numbered release in the BIOHAZARD series for the PlayStation 1" as a mean of keeping the titles of the first three games on the PS1 console consistent. Producer Shinji Mikami was against numbering the game considering "BIOHAZARD 1.9" as a more appropiate title, but as Okamoto pointed out, the game would sell better if named "BIOHAZARD 3". He reluctantly accepted the change after a three day long discussion, expresing later on his displeasure about the final title as not wanting to call the game as such."
      www.projectumbrella.net/articles/BIOHAZARD-3-LAST-ESCAPE
      Here's a backup of the interview with Shinji Mikami:
      "-- Could you tell us your comments as a total producer about RE2 to RE CV?
      M: First, the level of the fear is just getting torn down. I think the level of the fear has to be increase because players get use to the games, RE had fresh fear but 3 is getting rusty.
      I think when we made RE2, the company wanted to sale 2million copies, so we had to make popular way and also Hideki Kamiya the director of the game didn't like horror, (It is hard to make thing that you don't like) these 2 points made RE goes to different way from first idea.
      Those fans that love RE made RE2 to be million sales game but some of the fans were disappointed in the way RE2 is. So, we made RE1.9 to get back to the basic RE idea but that game changed its name to RE3, 3months before release. I still don't want to call the game RE3.
      Game is made up of the users and creators communications. So I want to leave the part of the ideas that the users be able to feel "This is RE, this is what we want." I want to keep the fans that really understand what RE is. If we lost the real fans and create the game, it is just "Making money". We are entertainers but not business men, creators. I don't want to forget that. I think real RE2 is RE CV, it still have the feelings from RE."
      web.archive.org/web/20071024151546/www.rehorror.net/thirdeye06/m_f_interview.php
      Regarding the last sentence, I'm inclined to think that RE2 is a typo, and that the original sentence was "I think the real RE3 is RE CV", however I have yet to find the original interview at this point to confirm that.

    I think the whole "first big open then it gets more linear" works fine because by the time the open areas are done you've learned stuff about the mystery and is ready to start heading toward the end, I think it works in a kind of narrative way

    A couple more interesting choice/changes.
    -If you blew up the explosive barrel by the tram and then trigger the cutscene of Mikhail fighting the zombies, he uses a grenade to kill them instead of a barrel
    -The Nuke can actually hit Raccoon City during the cutscene of Jill exterminating Nemesis if you choose that option, so there's *a* reason to not pick it, if you happen to nearly be out of time

    • @Araneus21
      @Araneus21 5 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      A few more:
      - If you decide to not overload the power station to kill zombies and choose to escape through the rusted door, Nemesis will be waiting for you with a rocket launcher. If you beat him there, he will not show up in Uptown near the fire hydrant after visiting Umbrella sales office.
      - There's also a third choice in every situation that requires you to choose. You can simply let the timer run out.
      Like at the power station, zombies will simply break the gate and enter, or the falling boxes will damage you if you hesitate too much in the parking lot.

    "If you got what it takes, turn the tables on him" love that line. This game is my favorite survival horror game. What I love so much is how the game makes you fear nemesis but the option to take him down is there even with a handgun. What I hate about other horror titles and their boogeyman are invincible. I just can't fear something that's invincible. If I can't fight it and I can only run away I feel that I am far less invested

    • @Mr.Mosquito89

      This is a great concept, and I think dude touches on it another video; decisions breed anxiety, and anxiety feeds fear.
      The game I use as the example of "invincible enemy oo scary" was always Amnesia, and it's not so frightening when you realize your one answer is always to run and hide, essentially. Even then, though, it still asks you to make snap decisions to FIND those hiding places, playing on fight-or-flight (or, flee-or-hide, essentially.)
      Give the player options, and have those options have consequence, and the fear comes naturally.

    • @deadstrider

      @@Sullenify Sadly it doesn't. Beat it in 4 hours on my first playthrough, there are no consequences in that cakewalk. Comparing the original to the remake is like comparing the Thing to Resident evil: apocalypse haha

      That's what's so cool about Nemesis, you can always choose to just run away but if you're brave enough you can take him on and win. But it's always a big risk because this guy is the definition of hard and he doesn't want you to win

    Even with the more linear design, I found exploring Raccoon City way more interesting than staying in a single place.
    It really felt more atmospheric to see the city and the results of the outbreak on the streets.
    RE2 only showed us the tip of the iceberg of that.

    RE3 brought so many great quality of life improvements - it's honestly hard to count. And for that, it may just be the best entry in the whole series. Veronica was a huge step backwards in almost every respect

    • @ultrairrelevantnobody1862
      @ultrairrelevantnobody1862 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I can agree with this. I started getting bored of Code Veronica three hours in, and the lack of additions introduced in 3 made it feel more clunky and archaic despite being on superior hardware.
      Having said that, Code Veronica wasn't without its own improvements. The first game in the series to have real time 3D environments (although Dino Crisis came first), the first to have proper character animations that wasn't a bunch of robotic patterns stitched together, and the first to have dynamic lighting. Admittedly though they're all from a presentation standpoint and I find the graphics overall to be quite ugly.

    RE3 is my favorite of the classic PS1 trilogy for all the notes you hit on in this video. It really pushes player freedom through its core gameplay systems rather than its level design like in RE1, and, while method one isn't strictly better than the other, I find it makes RE3 much more fun to play through as an "experienced" RE player. Combined with the incredible implementation of Nemesis, and the game is really just marvelous.

    8:32 In one of my playthroughs, I accidentally blew up that explosive barrel on my way to to the tram early on. So when I revisited Mikhail for that optional scene, he threw a hand grenade instead to blow up the pack of zombies. 13:26 I somewhat recall that by jumping out of the tram and ending up right inside the clock tower, you can keep both doors leading outside locked. So if you chose the option to push away Nemesis later on instead of electrocuting him. _You can keep him locked outside of the clock tower while you run around solving puzzles until the boss fight._

    • @sEaNoYeAh
      @sEaNoYeAh 6 ปีที่แล้ว +81

      It's not fanboyism. Not only is Resident Evil 4 just tightly designed and a great campaign in its own right, it was/is massively influential on design trends in game development. The most obvious example being the introduction of the over the shoulder camera that is now standard in most 3rd person games and effectively every 3rd person shooter.
      Resi 5 is one of the best co-op games, but it's not as influential and its not quite as well designed. Not a single player game either.

    This was really interesting. Really amazed at how much variation they were able to cram.
    This is also interesting from a "series" perspective.
    *Do you make your sequel more hard and challenging to satisfy the fans, or more accessible to try and get more people into the series...*
    RE3 definitely went the former direction.

    • @the-shork
      @the-shork 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I mean with the easy mode they kinda went both ways. RE3 on easy got me into the series ^^

    • @MediocreNed
      @MediocreNed 6 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      "RE3 definitely went the former direction."
      I disagree, they went with the latter direction such as:
      More ammo and more ammo per pick up (just look for dead cgi bodies)
      More item slots (10 items!)
      A OP healing item that holds 3 first aids
      a quickturn function
      A dodge function
      A OP pistol and shotgun that just wrecks everything that isn't a hunter or nemesis (though it is viable to take on nemesis with it)
      However that isn't a bad thing.
      Since they did add in some things did balancing that out by:
      Nemesis taking a shitload ammo to KO (he hit's hard too)
      Getting all the OP equipment requires KOing nemesis 5 or 6 times! (You get two freebies KOs, but if you just rely on that you'll only get the OP pistol when half the game is done)
      You will still hit the item slot limit
      Everybody likes the quickturn
      the dodge is timed and doesn't give invincibility frames (which makes it a pain in the ass when fighting nemesis)
      The item payout is randomized
      The passwords are also random so you do have to get the items that give you the passwords (honestly in the day where wikis and walkthroughs are everywhere I'm surprised that this doesn't happen more often)
      The whole ammo powder mechanic (which I am very glad they brought it back in RE7 as chems)
      Honestly RE3 is how you should "dumb down" games. You give the player controls and tools that make the game less difficult in someways but you also add more depth to the game to balance it how much easier you made the game.

      @hemangchauhan2864 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      MediocreNed Excellent point. This was a great breakdown.
      But this is a fine balancing act, because at times, it could lead to straying away from the core design or "identity of the series".
      RE4 is a great example of this.

    • @the-shork
      @the-shork 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Nothing wrong with playing easy mode, the point of video games is to have fun. If your way of having fun is bashing your head against a game until you master it, go for it! If your way of having fun is casually playing a game on easy and just taking in the atmosphere, have fun! What isn't okay is unironically applying that "git gud" mentality, or saying sth isn't a "real game" because it takes "no skill". Video games are a wildly diverse medium with something for everyone and we should embrace that.

    I have a question? Would you consider adding Dino Crisis 1 to this series? Design wise Dino Crisis has more in common with the first RE title then RE's own sequels. I know it's not really an RE title but it's the only title made by the RE team that I think is closest to all of RE 1's design philosophies. It might be fun to take a look. Keep up the good work.

    I love this series. I don't watch that much stuff but classic Resident Evil has a way of making me take the time.
    I'm not sure you meant to imply this but I'd like to clarify that the herbs and gunpowder you find randomly placed in the game aren't entirely random. Whether or not you find them on entering a location where they may be is random, but once that room has been loaded, it determines based on what's in the initial room whether or not you'll find the exact same items in a different specified location. So, if you find green herbs in the alley with the blue herbs and the fire hose, you will not find them outside near the Warren statue, and vice versa.
    What's interesting about this mechanic is that although it seems everything evens out for you, some of these random items will be set to turn up either in a place you have to traverse or a completely optional one, and others to turn up in a room with no enemies vs one you have to fight your way through.
    Enemy placement is done similarly to the randomised item placement, but zombie AI is truly randomly chosen from a few types as soon as you enter the room (and can be made to be randomly selected again if you exit the room and reënter). If you want to appreciate the design of these games on a completely different level, try a knife run of each one. Until I had done that, I had assumed that the zombies and other recurring enemies were largely the same in each title, with minor changes, but that couldn't be further from the truth. It's fantastic.

For some weird reason, I completely skipped over RE2 (probably because it wasn't advertised very much here in Austria, so I never knew that there was a sequel to RE1 until I saw RE3 in the store), so one could say that RE3 was my RE2 and I think it's the best game out of the original trilogy.
    I can see were RE2 fans are coming from though, because that game was a MASSIVE step forward from RE1. But since I've played RE3 first, all the great improvements of RE2 didn't had much of an impact on me. And since RE3 improved on a lot of things again (skippable cutscenes being the first thing that comes to mind), RE2 felt almost as archaic as RE1 in comparison.
    I liked it when the story in RE was still simple. No global conspiracies, no weird ant-queen aristocrats, no "I shall become a GAWD" Matrix Wesker, or Alexia "Dmitri Yuriev" Wesker and all that shit.
    Music was great as well, but that goes for all the original trilogy. I don't know why people only give credit to Silent Hill, when it comes to athmospheric soundtracks, because RE always had some great ambient tunes. The entire RE3 OST is really good.
    Oh and seeing more of Raccoon City was also great.
    And when Raccoon City was nuked, at the end of RE3, it really ment something to a lot of people. We spent several games learning about that city and exploring it. I wish newer titles would return to that formula and spend a little more time building a world, instead of just using all these uninteresting single-use setpieces that no one really cares about.

    I believe the tension of having mr.X surprisingly appear and haunt you in RE2 is very effective that they had the idea of Nemesis. Plus, with an outdoor city setting with mostly one routes really adds tension as you know he's always following you.

    1:06 The reason I heard Nemesis became a main sequel is because Sony had a contract with Capcom to keep the main sequels on the Playstation, and a simple title change was made to keep to the contract.

    • @JBalmoreS
      @JBalmoreS 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've read that it was given the 3 number due it being better to sell that way. After all it came out before Code: Veronica for the PS1. The Sony contract is an interesting theory as it is supported only because of the times where Mikami, as a producer, shown contempt towards Sony in favour of Nintendo. The biggest example was when he said he would commit ritual suicide if RE4 was released on a Sony console.
      Perhaps it was all jest on his part or he hated management at Sony during that time, whatever the case they made a good decision to give it the 3 title as the games after it kinda went stale until 4 came out.

    I could not imagine playing Resident Evil Code Veronica in place of Resident Evil 3 as the conclusion to the original trilogy on the Playstation 1. It would not have seemed right. Resident Evil 3 concludes the original storyline, and wraps up all the loose ends from Resident Evil 1, and 2. Whereas the storyline for Resident Evil Code Veronica does not have anything to do with the original storyline. Don’t get me wrong I thoroughly enjoyed playing Resident Evil Code Veronica. It would have just seemed out of place.

    This game is actually my second favorite game in the series. :)
    Better than Resident Evil 2, in my books. Every time you played RE3, it changed the item locations, monster locations and even Nemesis locations. Sure not everything, but most of it. Also the game was fun to play AND you got to explore Raccoon city, something you didn't get to do in the 2nd game, sadly enough.
    It offered the experience I expected the 2nd game to have.

    My favorite of the franchise, and you clearly understand what makes it so much fun to replay again and again. A couple things not mentioned that I believe are pretty important to the overall experience include the music and the game's artistic design. I love how amped up and big budget 90s Hollywood the score is, especially with the hard stings and Nemesis beat (dun-dun-dududun). The high tension percussion, cinematic strings, brass, and sting samples all come together for something that sounds vaguely like Terminator 2 but with a ton of its own character. I think RE3's soundtrack is way better than the previous installments, even with its big power ballad for the credits and its rocking guitars with that R&B/ Celine Dion esque snare sample. The game's overall look is also pretty interesting. I mentioned in another comment how weird the color palette is owning to the hard black and white contrasted against shades of pink and yellow. RE2 had a ton of blue with some green for accents, while RE1's overall look was all over the place. RE3's memorable look cropped up in the nightmares I had as a kid.

    Nemesis was one of the first games I ever played (MGS wut wut). I was a *highly* formative experience. An entire story based on getting the eff out of dodge - ASAP. I never owned a game station, I always had to use a friend's, but even when I had the opportunity to play, I was scared shitless of putting in the RE3 disc.
    A city collapsing all around you, Nemesis constantly dogging your steps - that first time he jumps through the police station window (if you choose to run away the first time) nearly made me soil my tactical pantaloons - and Jill lookin like a snacc? As I said: a highly formative experience.

    I heard that the reason Nemesis became RE3 was because Capcom had signed a contract with Sony that they would make all RE titles for Playstation consoles. Code Veronica was planned to be the next main entry in the series while RE4 was also being made for PS2 (which was later turned into Devil May Cry.) Since they'd signed the deal with Sony they decided to make nemesis the third game. Obviously, the contract ended after only one game for some reason and Capcom later signed another exclusivity deal with Nintendo which only lasted for a few games....

    I look forward to the tangled mess of a web that will be RE:CV's Road to the Rocket launcher, that game feels like it has the most complex puzzle item juggling of the entire series and even a bit of RE3-like divergence with the order you can use the blue emblems in.

    The story for why veronica x and nemesis were switched is actually because of their contract with sony. They were contract bound to make a third main game, which was going to be veronica but it wasn't far enough along and it wasn't part of the main story. Nemesis was shoehorned in at the last minute because it was almost done. In short, it was good old fashioned sony enforcing it's contracts. That is why veronica x seems more like a sequel then nemesis.

    You really have to play through the first 2 to experience the payoff of what this game is. The story, the characters, the locations, the music, the action - its all done with love. Like - after traversing a mansion and police station THIS is your reward - raccoon city.
    My only gripe is its too short of course, we naturally want more of a good thing. If you came across the defeated police roadblock at the start of the game that would've been cool.

    I recently picked up GameCube copies of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3, which I owned when I was younger but traded away like a dumbass. The GameCube ports may as well have been an early iteration of what we know as the HD remaster for the higher resolution and general fidelity it brings to the game's visuals compared to the PS1 originals (and compared to emulating said PS1 originals, which tends to pixelate pre-rendered backgrounds to all hell if you up the resolution). Resident Evil 3 in particular really seems to shine in that version, since it was kind of taxing to the original hardware at times and now runs butter-smooth. Damn good way to experience a damn good game.
    With regards to my preferences and Resi3, it's actually the game in the series I'm least-inclined to revisit, especially now that I've discovered Silent Hill 3, which I feel does a generally better job at being a mostly-linear survival horror game with heavy action (Heather Mason's melee skills ironically being better than the two grown-ass men before her, with a giant maul and slick katana making it into the game as normal-ass weapons in a normal-ass playthrough instead of as new-game-plus bonus weapons). I never felt the dodge move they added to Resident Evil 3 was all that reliable and I certainly prefer REmake's approach of having limited defensive weapons (the dagger, Chris's grenades, or Jill's stun gun) that can be set to automatically trigger if you get grabbed or used manually with a shoulder button depending on how hands-on you want that challenge element to be. I felt it added significantly to both combat and to exploration value at the same time, which is about as impressive a design decision as most of the changes made to that god-tier remake.
    I guess in the end though I just found the explorative mansion and police station type environments more compelling, even when they're technically laid out to be progressed through in almost entirely linear fashion. (See: Resident Evil 7.) And for the more linear action stuff, Resident Evil 4 ends up being my go-to rather than 3. So 3 ends up kind of awkwardly sitting there as one of the games I don't hold up as a real contender against the others no matter what direction they're taking. But it's still a kick-ass sequel. I'd probably feel more strongly for it if I'd experienced it when it came out rather than on the GameCube after already blasting through RE4, RE0, REmake, and RE2 in that order.

    As far as I know, this was originally going to be "Resident Evil - Last Escape", while "CODE Veronica" was going to be..."Resident Evil 3"

    Out of curiosity, are you going to include the Revelations games in this series? I could see why you wouldn't since they're kinda irrelevant side games, but I think they're interesting enough to be worth a look, as they both seemed to be direct reactions to criticism of the most recent mainline release, and both had their own ideas on how to balance horror, exploration, and puzzles with action.
