      I know how you feel, it's almost the same with me & Unreal Tournament 99.
      This game being my UT99 of car combat games.
      The voice taunts after kills, the music & even CTF & Deathmatch remind me of UT99 in subtle ways of just old school game design.
      I got GRIP recently & i cannnooot compare it to Jak X.
      I put the Jak X OST into the game to play since you can do that in the vanilla game on Steam,
      and even changed the controls to it & match it.
      Still didn't bring me close to home. No point in even trying it.
      If that's the high you're looking for, you're not gonna find it there, stick with Jak X.
      And WipEout is another love of mine, but again, very diff feel & vibe,
      however BallisticNG on Steam is amazing & has probably surpassed WipEout by this point for anyone interested.

    I should have mentioned this in your last Jak video, but I believe the change in love interests for Jak 3 might have been a result of voice casting issues. For whatever reason, the previous VA of Keira, Anna Garduno, did not reprise her role as Keira in Jak 3 or Jak X. She was replaced by Tara Strong, a common voice actress with literally hundreds of roles.
    My theory is, given how little Keira speaks in Jak 3, how she is oddly mute when first meeting with Jak while Samos talks his mouth off, that Naughty Dog didn't have a voice actor for Keira. I think Naughty Dog didn't have a voice actor for Keira until near the end of production, which necessitated the change in love interests. Remember, they only had a year to pump out Jak 3, there wasn't much time to recast Keira at all. It's possible Naughty Dog were afraid they wouldn't find a good new VA for Keira, or perhaps the former actress was stuck in pricing negotiation for a while before backing out. Regardless, Keira is too mute and too small of a figure in Jak 3 for me to believe it was all intentional. It doesn't feel like an intentional artistic decision, especially when they went back on it in Jak X. It smells of backroom issues to me.

      It's like you read my mind. A 15 year-old-me who had just rented Jak 3 as a birthday present to himself back in 2005, thought it was weird that Keira was so silent in that scene where they're separated by the security wall.
      Your comment really sheds light on the switch in love interests because was questioning what happened to Torn and Ashelin.

      🤔 Sounds like you would enjoy some Twisted Metal: Black-Online then.
      ⏭ Pertinent to the video, though, JakX Combat _online MP_ is available, again. 👍 Running from a PS2 here, one can connect using the following DNS at this time for NTSC-U/C and PAL: 45_._7_._228_._197
      👉 Quarantining the JakX Combat saves onto its own memory card is a good idea last I read. The autosave can corrupt the JakX file (as it recently did on my -39001 model PS2) along with, potentially, not recognizing any of the rest of the MC contents and, therefore, all of the other game save files and Netfile settings that could be present for other games.

      @dvda9725 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Truth. Whether they intended for you to do that or not I dunno, but it feels so genius nontheless considering the game is so challenging that there's always at least one racer right on your tail, you never end up lapping around everyone else like you can if you get good at a Mario or Crash racer. If you get blown up in Jak X, you'll always get overtaken by multiple others, so the fact that you can use the game's difficulty to your advantage if you're smart enough is just the icing on the cake that is an already amazingly clever racing game. There's always a solution even if the game doesn't tell you it. It's perfect, and I think Brit would totally agree if he knew about the stopping trick.

      You can definitely maintain enough of a lead to respawn and still be in the lead. In fact, more times than not, there's no opponent behind me and I only have to worry about peacemakers. My answer being to gun it as fast as I can to respawn before I lose my lead.
      Not actually making fun of your skill, though. The game tolerates many different styles, so you can be slower and still win.

      It definitely is strange, and a little sad really. I think at the time we all wanted to see a more well-meshed story behind the universe and the characters, as much as we enjoyed the substance as it was. There is so much potential in it, but I suppose being that Jak 1 was such a mish-mash the developers didn't leave themselves a foundation for something so seamless and ran with the idea of something not so solid altogether.

    • @dvda9725

      There is actually tons of backstory behind basically everything in Jak 3, problem is in the actual game certain things only get mentioned or hinted at, but it's all on the J&D wiki, and the game becomes more enjoyable when you know everything from sources outside the game itself.
      There's also lots of stuff that went unmentioned in Jak 2 (though this is more cool than frustrating) where certain things you do during the game you'll be just as oblivious as Jak himself is even after you beat the game, and you'll never realize until you go *really* in depth. For example, Jak 3 has Jak being banished because the people think his friendship with Krew helped the Metal Heads invade Haven, and while Jak is portrayed as being in the right because we're left as oblivious as he is, that's exactly what he did. Take the mission where you destroy the defense turrets in the sewers, they were there for keeping Metal Heads out, and Krew had Jak doing his dirty work without Jak knowing.

    Ah yes, the autosave glitch, every Jak & Daxter fan's nightmare. I encountered this devilish glitch when I first played it. Annoying as hell until I found out that taking out the memory card, playing for an exciting session then plugging it back in to save manually when I'm finished for the day. Thank god for that. The soundtrack is absolutely kick-ass, definitely one of my favourites to listen to and even play it in the background when playing another fast-paced action-packed game. Devil May Cry, God Of War, Killzone, etc.
    Despite Naughty Dog forgoing Jak 4, I hope that one faithful day we'll get the next installment for real and make the community super happy.
    I love listening to your voice and how you describe video games in high class detail including a deep analysis. I keep coming back to many of your videos whenever I can. Keep up the X(cellent) content and hopefully your channel will gain worldwide popularity.

If you unplug the memory card while at the main menu it’ll disable autosave. You can plug it back in and save any time you’d like without having to worry about the game breaking and becoming cursed.

    Jack X is the Deadlocked of the J&D franchise. A spin off deviating heavily from the original formula, but still made by the same guys and turned out to be fun as hell.
    On the bad spin off side, I think you could also consider Lost Frontier to be the Size Matters of the J&D franchise. Funny thing is LF and SM are developed by the same company.

  • @PurpleSnake
    @PurpleSnake 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    I just must mention how nicely done they portrayed Jak's hair and facial hair, and how it signifies him getting older. In the beginning he had the same kind of hair you'd expect from someone looking like him being that age. In the second game he has longer, more untamed hair as well as sporting a goatee, showing him physically growing older. In the third game he has shorter hair, around the same length as in the first (I think), has styled his goatee slightly differently AND also grew sideburns. And then in this game he has the shortest hair his ever had, yet again has a slightly different styled goatee and he retains his sideburns more or less like they were in three.
    The reason why I think this is genius is because I feel like it generally reflects real life (at least as it is for some people): When you're a teenager (13-16 perhaps) you might have about half-long hair and no facial hair. Then as you enter your later teen years (17-19) you start growing some kind of facial hair and saves out your hair. Then you enter your early twenties (say 20-24) and you save out some more facial hair but go back to a shorter hair like when you were younger. And then finally when you enter your mid-to late twenties (25-29) you keep that sweet facial hair, perhaps style it differently and get shorter hair, even shorter than your teen years. I dunno, this is just what I feel like is at least a somewhat accurate take on real life growth in terms of looks when growing older.

    • @mar_speedman
      @mar_speedman 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      1- It was shorter
      2- It actually goes like this:
      Jak 1: He has long hair styled after the trends of the time
      Jak 2: After years in prison, his hair grows too long and he starts growing facial hair. Mostly his goatee and some sideburns. It's not a style, his goatee is overgrown.
      Jak 3: After finally taking a chance to cool down and have a shave, he cuts his hair into his original style, though shorter, presumably to grow into it. Also he trims his goatee, though he doesn't remove it entirely. (His facial hair also starts growing more)
      Jak X: He cuts his hair short, stops bothering trying to style it in a way that's been out of fashion for centuries, going for a more modern look. His facial hair growing even more, with his sideburns growing longer.
      And if you look at the concept art, it's clear that the intention was for Jak to grow a beard similar to Mar's (As in, no mustache) and eventually start tying his longer hair. They were really debating it.

He was too dangerous to be left alive... hell, he was dangerous even after his death, he managed to harm Jak and his friends even beyond the grave. And also, it's not as if Jak had an option to save him. The entire place was about to blow up, and Jak and Daxter managed to narrowly evade death by jumping. There was no time to drag an irredeemable bastard (who also weighs a ton) out of harms way.

    That Queens of the Stone Age intro is one of the fuckin best intro cutscenes. Both Insomniac and Naughty Dog went full *edge* with their 4th entries, pumped up the action level and didn't take it too seriously which ended making the games pretty great even if people weren't ready to accept them as quality entries right away. I'll never forget reading about Deadlocked in Game Informer and then the cool October day in the 3rd grade when my dad got the game for me, absolutely unforgettable along with the time I got Jak X for Christmas.

    The autosave glitch can be avoided by pulling out your memory card after a load, and then putting it back in and doing a manual save before you close down.
    And yes this game was really amazing. As you said, they really nailed the speed aspect of the game and the choices you have to do while driving on how to max out your speed. Great soundtracks and gameplay. It really kickstarted my love for Queens of The Stoneage. It's too bad it didn't get a lot of attention.

    I loved Jak X to pieces back when I played it. Flaming, jagged pieces. It got pretty difficult later on in the story, though, more difficult than I've experienced with other racers. Tight turns in a few of the later tracks force you to really up your game and the more strategic item system means you can't just keep beating your head against the wall until RNJesus wins the race for you. It's intense.
    I should play it again sometime soon.

    Jak does have character growth throughout the series (Though it's more a collection of notes honestly)
    Jak started off as a do gooder, got corrupted till he was filled with a dark presence, struggled to be the hero he was always meant to be, failed at times, succeeded at other times, then eventually just... Accepted that he isn't the hero he was half a decade ago. It's a valid direction to take Jak in. (Though, again, it would've helped to double down on it)
