Shout-out to the PS2's hair growth @ 12:02 😂 I honestly expected FAR worse for a ~20 year old console that's never been cleaned and survived not only mine and my brothers' grimy hands but also a category 5 hurricane.
Weve had ours for probably 20 years. Still works like a charm. One of the greatest and iconic console in history. The cleaning is so satisfying in all the dc playlists
@@GregSalazar uhhh the PS2. When gaming was so fun and simple, no micro transactions and no season passes. Almost Every game you buy is a complete and finished product.
Gotta say, I've cleaned out PS2s half that thing's age, which were at least 10 times worse. Some things I found in some old consoles over the years, were actually mind boggling, how they got inside them in the first place. That thing looked rather admirable for a console two decades old. 😆 Looked great when you finished it up though. Nicely done.
it actually seems like very small amount of people know that you can add drop of oil to the fan bearings from the back side or by pulling the hub off (if possible in first place). I have fixed multiple fans by doing that. Last time I did it with noisy PS3 fan, it had good old ball bearings there so they just needed grease. That thing started to spin way easier and the fan itself was quieter. I have done that to GPU fans as well but those usually have sleeve bearings so once that bearing is worn, it's not going to turn brand new by adding oil/grease but in this instance it gave me few days to source new fans for it
Tbh I have had several apart, including my own and this was surprisingly clean for it's age.. I am glad yours has held up quite well over the years. the ps2 was indeed a thing of beauty... kudos to the homebrew community for extending the life of this machine.
My PS2 still gets plenty of love, it gets used to play Buzz Jr. Jungle Party every time my nieces & nephews come to visit, The Best Game Ever on any Platform
i work for a company that sells used/like new video game consoles and accessories, i work in the repair department, and this is the console that i have mostly mastered in repairing! cool video!
After your recommendatioon I bought the Levoit 300s and here in my flat right in the middle of the city (where it gets especially dusty) it is truly a blessing. And nice video as always ^^
Before having an actual gaming PC I didn't realize how dirty it can get inside tech. Cleaned our OG Xbox One and replaced the dead HDD recently and for a relatively new console it was filthy in there! Cleaning tech out is super therapeutic!
As dad of 3, the thing with kids.. its actually best for them to get down and dirty and be exposed to a great variety of all kinds dirt and bugs, as it will pay out in long term, fortifying their immune system, making them rugged and healthy. :)
Yep. There have been quite a lot of studies showing that kids who grew up in overly clean or near sterile homes tend to have far more medical issues when they get older like asthma and other respiratory issues.
The Levoit Core 300 is an AMAZING air filter. I love it. Run it 24/7 on medium and the filter gets NASTY after about a month with two cats. I live in Northern California and just one Core 300 in a 1 bedroom apartment on medium setting was enough to keep the wildfire smoke at bay last year. Having clean air to breathe is obviously super important.
This was so satisfying to watch. This takes me back 20 years to when I got my PS2 console. It's still my personal favourite console to this day. I have some great memories playing Final Fantasy X and Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3.
My parent's PS2 is just about as old as me. Maybe by a year. I think I was 4 or 5 when I started getting into games like Tactics Ogre, Final Fantasy X, and Kingdom Hearts... Really great memories but it just doesn't boot up properly anymore. I'll have to follow this video if I want a chance at reliving the nostalgia someday. lol
Awesome job! There's a latch under the disc tray that you can slide to the right to force open the drive. Just need to slide it back to the left before you use the drive 🙂
Oh thanks, Greg, way to make the Elder Millennials feel ancient. I bought my PS2 when I was 19, fresh out of USMC Boot Camp... Back when they were still fairly new.
Great video as usual Greg :), usually it's good practise to also re-grease the disc drive lens rail as the grease usually ends up dried up and caked in dust over the years but isn't completely necessary if the lens is reading okay. So satisfying to watch these deep-cleaning videos, it's really rewarding at the end of it. Keep up the Deep-Cleaning venture. 😎👍
Time to get my snacks and some drink and sit down for another entertaining deep clean... keep them going, very entertaining and satisfying watching these deep cleans. :) Thank you!
You're not kidding about the PSU having the power to kill you, when I was younger I took appart an old digital camera to try and repair it, thinking there was no electricity left without batteries I put my thumb on whatever powers the flash and it discharged everything it had left. The skin on my thumb became white and peeled off instantly. Somehow the camera started working again after I had enough courage to put it back together
Damn....love the PS2. Was going to high school that same here when this thing came out. Seeing this makes me want to clean out my fat PS2 now since I haven't cleaned it since getting mine lol. Maybe we will see a PS1 (my personal favorite system of all time) or Gamecube too.
I really want to send you my Xbox 360. Had it since 2006, last turned it on was 2009 until last weekend I dug it out and still works beautifully. It's loud so I'm sure dust bunnies made there way inside, but it's a childhood relic. Still have my original copy of Halo 3 day one release. I'm in Tampa.
Greg - there is also an HD-based version of Free MCBoot called HDBoot. That way it's all on the SSD and no more memory card is needed exclusively for that boot thing.
Memory lane - takes me back to high school playing GTA 3 and Gran Turismo 4. Funny tid bit, I used to hide my ganja in the expansion bay from the parents. 20 years later, the PS2 is sitting on a shelf as a display piece and now the parents are taking CBD for their joint pains, asking me about gummies. 😅
I'm surprised yours was so clean. When I did my PS4, it had huge dust bunnies in there. Can't wait to see if you get a retro one where age affects the outside and what you do with that.
That looks like my PS2 that I recently put into a box, only mine is slim. I should probably clean it out at one point.... *silently goes back to the PS5* I know that probably shouldn't be my attitude with old systems but I can't help it at this point lol.
I had until only recently my “OG” PS, PS1, PS2 Slim, PS3Slim (all working with about 15-20 games per console) but I cleaned house as they hadn’t been used them in about 3 years. I still have my PS4 but my gaming has been PC mainly for a loooong time.
Oh my lordy I loved the PS2! I had one that I found that was tossed out with a huge box of gaming stuff at my friend's storage place. Took it, it had that famous disc error which I quickly fixed and ran my favorite game on it Burnout Revenge! You do realize, Greg since this is your PS2 it has hair in it while you were passing through puberty lol! Great episode, thanks for the memories!
I had one of the PS2's that had issues with the Optical sensor for the Disk. Initially Sony had a warranty on it where they would clean it and that worked for a few years, but then they said that I would have to pay for cleaning. At that time I started disassembling the PS2 and cleaning it myself.
Tetris Plus was my mom's favorite game before she died. I was so pleasantly surprised to see it in your ps2! Glad to see it still brings fam's together!
I have been so scared to take mine apart. The thing has never failed me, and I actually just picked my PS2 back up from my moms. The Sly trilogy and NFS underground’s still slap to this day!
I was taking apart my ps2 slim yesterday and swapping out the laser and found some other underlining issues the power button fell off so i have to re-solder it. But other than that I was genuinely surprised how clean it was after 20 years lol
You can bring just about any disc back to life with just sandpaper and polishing compound. The data is stored on the label which is practically just a foil sheet adhered to the plastic. The plastic itself does nothing but I guess protect the data. The scratch is make it to where the laser can't read the foil.
dang, its been a while seeing a ps2,since my last console is a ps2 and didnt have the ps3,ps4 nor the ps5 because idk why😂,good old times playing the ps2 tho, glad so see it again from a GCDC playlist
Just a few notes. The PS2 cannot in any way take advantage of an SSD. It's better to have a normal 3.5' HDD since it fits perfectly (won't move) and is meant for that. Another thing is that those SATA network adapters are awful, they not only have a fake ethernet port but they also affect game compatibility because they're low quality clones. The better thing to do is to get the official Sony network adapters (SCPH-10350 & SCPH-10281) along with the Bitfunx SATA upgrade kit to replace the IDE board inside the adapters. They're still cheap. Then you should have used OPL instead of HD Loader, the latter is extremely outdated.
i still have a ps2 slim. still works but seems to have a faulty drive sadly. so not sure can do much with it without a functional drive. wouldn't mind giving it for a fix or flop but kinda far away so kinda out of the question. still nice to see and oldie be cleaned and still in good use
The funny thing is, you never need to clean the ps2 and it will last a life time. Crazy how it manages to not die, overheat or any other issues. I have had mine since 2000.

You've inspired me to clean my PS2. Unless I'm missing it completely, I didnt see any links for the McBoot.
Have you ever thought about branding your own pc cleaning tools?
Where's the info on the extras you put into the PS2? I can't see it in the description😢
Your link for the cordless vacuum don't work. And when I go to Amazon to look it up. I can't find it. What would be another good vacuum.
There is a slide in the cd tray you can push down and it ejects while off. Also you can use alcohol on that lazer have done it many times.
