    Just for those curious i went to pcbway and that shell will cost $ 259.97. So im sure while it's nothing to mr nacho, who most likely got his for free, i feel that price is way too high for an avg person and should have been listed as a con. I'm glad there seems to be a lot of new stuff coming out for the PS2 these days! Like others, I'm still really hoping for an ODE style solution, as I still find the software preparation side of things extremely antiquated on PS2. Even mx2sio/mx4sio have been *quite* flaky for me in the past, despite modern improvements. Here's hoping, I suppose!

    • @Louhike
      @Louhike 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes I had a ton of problems with mx4sio , I would not recommend it. Using the harddrive or the ethernet is an OK solution for the PS2 but an OSD would be great.

    • @partlyawesome

      ODE would also solve the PS1 backcompat problem most likely!

    • @VexAcer
      @VexAcer ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hopefully a PS2 ODE does happen at some point.
      OPL is great, but even nowadays with an HDD the compatibility still isn't perfect. It'd also likely allow for PS1 playback since the main reason PS1 games can't be played from the HDD is because the PS1 hardware is used for the I/O when they aren't being used for games.

    With how much people are putting effort into modding these days, I really hope that we get a 79000 series full digital out mod at some point, by that I mean tapping straight into the board's digital video out (if the combined EE+GS+RAM chip doesn't do DAC work now...) before it goes to the digital-analog conversion. That would mean perfect HDMI output for PS2s, with the portable-friendly 79000 series (probably similar work on the 90000 series) boards. @michaelwarner5277 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Regarding what you stated at 16:00 - I would actually have to disagree for a few reasons, as shown below:
    1) When being kitted out as shown, the SIO mod will forego the weakness of having optically-based media - You don't need to worry about discs getting scratched, disc rot, failure of the laser diode, and drive motor failure, or if using this in a portable environment such as in a vehicle/RV, disc skipping during loads due to rough terrain while at the same time maintaining access to both memory card slots.
    2) The removal of the optical drive means that the unit itself is actually more power efficient and will allow the power supply to operate (albeit marginally) cooler.
    3) it's further reduction in size is more conducive to sitting it in smaller areas where even the slim ps2 would have otherwise taken up too much space.
    4) you don't need to worry about keeping a library of discs laying around when traveling with it. Even if you must use one SD card per game, it would take many, many microSD cards to occupy the same physical space taken up by a single dvd disc.

    Absolutely beautiful, I can't wait for the future of the PS2 going forward, as PS1/Saturn/Dreamcast all have ODE's available now, with optional HD output that looks and plays great.
    As a diehard PS1/PS2 collector, I'd say that the PS2 is the last of the older consoles that really needs a way to play on modern TV's with great visuals and no lag. Heck, getting it to look good on the old 1080p HDTV's was like shooting blind. I've had some pretty good results with Monster component cables on an older LG HDTV hooked up to the PS2, but 3D games still don't look good(but 2D and 3D PS1 games look surprisingly crisp played on a PS2 with this setup). Too many jaggies, the colors seem to bleed almost, it's just crazy that the PS2 is the last of these consoles to get a proper, convenient HDMI solution. People in the comments here are talking about current projects, so I'm hopeful that we'll soon be able to easily buy the ultimate PS2 with an SD card reader and HD outputs.

    Kinda drooling for it now, especially with a HDMI mod.

    I have mixed feelings for this kind of mods (the ones that involve cutting boards and destroying parts of the original hardware) when applied to working machines though in this case it wasn't that aggressive (like in handheld conversions). For one, it seems a very fun project but on the other side, destroying parts of working PS2 makes me a bit uncomfortable, like there is a limited amount of PS2 out there and no factories are producing more. I know it's irrational, it's the PS2 and it's the most sold console in history so there will probably be a bunch more of consoles in the second hand market for years to come, but even so, some part inside of me feels a bit uneasy.

    • @MajoraTheEncryption
      @MajoraTheEncryption 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The PS2 sold 155 million units, I don’t think you have to be too worried about us running out in our lifetime and there will be thousands preserved in pristine condition. The PS4 was out by the time they stopped production on them. I’m sure most people attempting this mod including myself will use a 79X model they have lying around or find a well used/broken disc drive one for cheap on eBay like i did. Better to use it for a fun project like this than for it to be thrown out for good.

    • @JohnWuWu
      @JohnWuWu 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MajoraTheEncryption Realistically I don't think we're running out of ps2s either, at least not in my lifetime but do you know those kind of thoughts/worries that bounce in the back of your head from time to time? This is one of them😅

    Knowing that I can just cut a chunk of the PCB off and patch up the missing connections like this means lots of potential for building a portable PS2. I wouldn't be surprised to see a portable kit spring up in the next year or three like there is for the Wii.

  • @GlassMaster_Jae

    I understand how cool it is to have almost entirely original hardware on a small scale but at this point I consider it an emulation device since it's not running original discs. Would be sick to see this done with the original functionality intact. Sick project though and it came out awesome , much respect to the work that went in to this!

    • @dylangerescapeplan
      @dylangerescapeplan ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s not an emulation device, booting ISOs from a hard drive or SD card does not automatically mean it’s using emulation - this mod still uses all of the native hardware to run the games, giving you an authentic ps2 experience

    • @GlassMaster_Jae
      @GlassMaster_Jae ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dylangerescapeplan basically a Series S version of the PS2. Emulator was probably the wrong word to use. I guess a better comparison would be running PS1/PSP ISO's on a PSP?

    A tip I use whenever I cut something like that USB port removal at the 6 minute mark. I make sure there is more left on the board then I'd sand it down with a needle file to get a clean edge. That way you ensure that once you're done its all flush.

    The only thing I might have done differently is leave the board as-is, have it in a slightly wider case (still significantly smaller than an unmodded slim) and utilize a breakout board for the Micro SD card in the space where the extra plastic would be behind the second USB port sawed off here. That said, it’s a damn fine mod.

    In theory there is 2 versions of the Slim model, one has the rugged dull plastic look on the disc tray and the other has a glossy black style for the disc tray cover, its essencially the same model but the difference is that the disc lens has been improved and isnt as prone to failure as early slim models used to be.

    Great video Tito! I may have to do this as I might be setting up a "tiny" console area to play after moving house. Despite going up massively in square footage, my retro area has gotten a bit smaller haha.
    For virtually any ODE that needs to stream data directly from the card, Samsung cards are some of the worst you can buy. I own almost every ODE out there and Samsung cards have an issue, only with games using streaming data/music, where you'll get weird hitching and craziness. The leading theory is that they do something to keep up with the file system to keep it clean (something similar to garbage collection) that many other SD cards do not do. The PS2 might not care about this, but it also might depending on the game. YMMV.
    I'd recommend sticking to simple/cheap Sandisk Ultra cards as they have been known to work in every single ODE solution without issue assuming they are legit Sandisk cards (always buy from reputable source).
