SRV opened for Ray Charles in Seattle Festival, I didn't know who Stevie was, but for $7 I got to see the greatest guitarist I've ever seen, and I've seen many talented bands and artists. We were drenched in sweat after he played. Ray Charles danced in the wings during half of Stevie's set. It was incredible! 💞✌
You should see when him and his big brother Jimmie get on stage and play together. I shot photos of them once playing the same double neck guitar. Stevie was seated on a stage monitor playing the lower neck while Jimmie wrapped his arms around his little brother and played the upper. My brother and I used to go see Stevie play all the time. He did weekly shows at a little place called Hole In The Wall back in the day here in Austin, and regularly at other places like Antones and Liberty Lunch. *SUPER* nice guy. He literally gave my buddy Mike the pickups off his guitar once because Mike broke his. Mike was playing Antones, Stevie was in the back with Clifford Antone watching the show. We didn't even know he was there. Mike was gonna end the show early because he didn't have another guitar to play, but his was the same model Fender Strat that Stevie plays. Stevie went out to his car and took the pickups off his, brought them to Mike and said something like, "Keep playing, brother. You're on fire!" True story. I *TRULY* miss that man.
Stevie didn't plug the guitar into an amp he plugged it into his soul! He IS the GOAT for real! Lucky for me I grew up with his music and saw him in concert when I was 12. RIP. Love the reaction vids!
Stevie quit in his Senior Year while attending Southern Methodist University for the artistical and gifted high school students. He was 17. At 12 he became addicted to cocaine because a dentist kept prescribing him numbing medicine for his teeth. He also became an alcoholic from being made to mix his father and his friends Tom Collins. He started drinking with out his dad's knowledge.
There's a reason guys like Buddy Guy, Albert King, BB King and other blues legends wanted to play with Stevie......and they did. Some amazing collaborations.
Gents, you cannot cut in the video that much!! SRV fans know what this master of the guitar can do ANYTHING on it, please when you start a video of Stevie buckle up because its pedal to the metal. rip. SRV
I have seen SRV 10 times in my life. He is my favorite musician of all time. First time i saw him was the Chicago Blues Fest 1985. Last time was Alpine Valley 1990 the day before he died. Was seriously one of the most painful deaths in my life.
I feel that. Texas boy....and had moved out of state (Hawaii) for high school. Grew up on his music, and was moving back to Austin, Texas for college in 1990. Was so excited to be able to FINALLY see him live....then the day before getting on the plane to head off to college, I heard the news. Was devastated. Weird to think about it, as I'm almost 50, but still remember my parents not understanding why I was in tears. Only comfort was being able to hear his influence on other musicians...

I was at Stevie Ray Vaughn's last concert the night his helicopter crashed after the show at Alpine Valley Wisconsin August 26th 1990. The lineup was Eric Clapton, SRV, Robert Cray and Buddy Guy. I remember leaving the concert and saying to myself that if SRV was ever in my area again I would never miss his show. Sadly I will never have that opportunity. The next morning was one of the saddest days of my life. RIP SRV!
drsmoothwater me too. Saw him at least 10 times before he died, the last time just a month before he died. First time at Starfest on the lawn by Medical City in Forest Lane back in the early 80s. Best concerts I’ve ever been to.
When I was about 10 years old my dad took me to hear Stevie Ray. He knew I couldn’t get into the club so he talked the door man into letting us stand outside by the door so we could hear. Probably my greatest childhood memory of my dad and music. Stevie died a couple years later.
There was a big festival in San Antonio call La Semana and me and a buddy were walking around. We heard Stevie from way across the festival. We decided we were gonna go catch us some SRV. We got to where he was playing and the line was around the block. His show was half over and still people were waiting to get in. Me and my friend decided we will come back next time and get there early. 2 Months later he was dead. I remember where I was. I was 19 working construction at a music studio when I heard on the radio.
@@timhoovermusicman Lucky man. I only saw him once back in 80's when I was 7 or 8. I was a hyper-active psycho as a child but my dad told me I just sat there the whole set catching flies with my mouth wide open lol.
Sleeping on pool tables, living the homeless life, The greatest guitar player I have heard! Also, beat the addiction thing before he died in a plane crash. DAMN IT!
He started playing at the age of 7 and breaking strings was an everyday thing. they said his hands were so strong he had to have the necks on his guitars built up or he'd break them. Love me some Stevie... and I'm 63
Stevie Ray Vaughn was one of the absolute best guitarist ever on this planet... The live performance he put on would continue for hours depending on the lengths of pure shredding that Stevie would take off on. He was phenomenal. People went to see him play that guitar. He didn't even have to sing, just play his beloved guitar.... He was one with his instrument..... Stevie Ray Vaughn was from Texas, he was killed in a helicopter crash, & the world lost one of the most talented guitarist ever to walk the earth.... Your comments showed you don't know much at all of the rock world... But that's OK... You will soon understand that in some cases we do go just to see the guitarist if he is great like Stevie was...
Kimberly Poole : Most musicians disliked the touring, as Bob Geldof described, to pay for making more music, but SRV was just the opposite, he said, ‘It’s really all about playing with an audience.’ Whatever his skin tone, SRV was a true soul-man!❤️🌎✌🏾
Rock, maybe...but this and many of his others are purely blues, right in there with Albert King and B.B. King. Even the format of the song is b-l-u-e-s.
@@sandrasofiahsexton3917 played with them both. Recorded Texas Flood in “Jackson Brownes” studio. Drove a milk truck from Houston Texas to LA. Got in the booth. 20 minutes later he came out. THAT was “Riviera Paradise”
When I had my first seizure five years ago the first question my neurologist asked me was, "have you been listening to a lot of Stevie Ray Vaughan lately"?
I had my last one last year on thanksgiving when I got sober. I don’t mean to be a downer but I’m gonna miss music and people from a distance the most. Love you guys. Love is all. I just needed to say goodbye to someone and feel something one last time.
come on man ... lets start the list : Jimi , BB , Gary Moore , Albert Collins , Kenny Burrell , Buddy Guy , Carlos Santana , Freddie King , Peter Green , Charlie Christian , Alvin Lee , Grant Green , Terry Kath , .... just to start
All of those other guitarists mentioned by Bob were great, with Jimi being particularly groundbreaking and experimental (Machine Gun!)...and there are others that were or are supremely technically skilled and blindingly fast such as Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Yngwe Malmsteen, Roy Clark (yes, reallly; watch some videos), or Eddie Van Halen doing Eruption....but! But the only one I want to go back and watch over and over, the only one that can make me feel every note in my soul EVEN WHEN I DON'T LIKE THE GENRE OF MUSIC, the only one that makes me giggle with glee, is SRV! I agree with John and Eddie...SRV stands ALONE at the top!!! 🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆
I stand by that statement for the rest of my life!! The best guitarist to ever walk the face of the earth! Willing to debate anybody, anywhere! Best guitarist ever!! Hands down! Especially, blues!! But anybody else I don't care what genre! He was the best period!!
@@bobsaturday4273 I don’t think anyone could play like Stevie, especially behind his back but I do give Terry Kath an honorable mention. Just my opinion but all you listed is unbelievable though.
This is such a great performance because the cameramen capture the angles perfectly, and this is such a 'transcendental' performance - he takes us on a journey way beyond expectations.
I once heard Stevie Ray Vaughan’s dressing style described as “Texas cowboy genie” and there has never been a more accurate description of the way he dressed.
when you can play a strat like this man you're a guitar wizard, but add vocals and play, genius is the word STEVIE WAS A GENIUS,and him playing JIMI well that's just icing, god rest his soul
strattuner Can you just imagine Stevie,Jimmy BBKing and Janis Joplin jamming for god. That's what's happening when it rains. God is crying at what beauty he had created and loaned us for a while. Now he has his creations back with him.
Recently found that on dvd BRAND NEW at a used record store..best 3.00 ever spent in my life!! Almost cried when I found it lol because I used to go smoke blunts by his headstone, an I'd always tuck a fat roach in beside it for him
My dad introduced me to Stevie’s music when I was 11 (I’m now 31), and it’s been one of my favorite escapes ever since. Change It, Cold Shot, Ain’t Gone N’ Give Up On Love, Couldn’t Stand The Weather, Lenny, Tightrope, and his version of Little Wing have been my saving grace during many tough times. Love, love, love SRV.
I hear you on that one, I believe Stevie has been the saving grace of 'many a poor soul'. Yours and mine included. When he played you not only head it, you felt it. Now that's magic. God bless you, Stevie Ray, and all those you've helped through their times of crisis. RIP, King SRV
I saw Stevie Ray live at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines, IA back in 1987 when he was clean and sober. It was the most incredible concert I ever saw. I saw Eric Clapton a month later and it was not even close. Stevie Ray was amazing.

I've said that playing the blues is like having to be black twice. Stevie Ray Vaughan missed on both counts, but I never noticed. B. B. King quote when asked about SRV.
SRV was from Oak Cliff Texas. That is an neighborhood in the south part of Dallas. I grew up there too. He was mentored by another great from Dallas Freddy King. Add Albert King to your playlist and then you will know where that came from.
@@rebeccabailey7794 Oh yes, the 3 kings Freddy King, Albert King, B.B. King..I saw Stevie at Kiest park in Oak Cliff one day when I was a kid ..He was a class act no doubt..He was sittin on a picnic table playing an acoustic guitar..They called him Little Stevie..I Smoked a joint with him and Mark Pollock , Amongst others..Saw him at the bronco bowl a few times..Lower Greenville bar and grill also..I remember he was talking to Mark about working with David Bowie..
Jimi will always be the best guitarist in my mind, BUT stevie ray's version of voodoo is priceless. Its a shame we lost both these talented musicians at such a young age. Props guys for exposing this to people who don't know about STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN.
Texas gave us two of the most insanely gifted players. Stevie Ray & His Older Brother Jimmie Vaughn. Every time he was asked who his favorite guitar player was Stevie would reply My Big Brother. At age 14 Stevie found out Albert King was playing at the club where his brother Jimmie was in the house band & he begged Jimmie to ask Albert if he could sit in with him.. Albert King was at first put out & said no... but before the end of the night he relented & let the 14 yr old join him. What happened next is legendary.. Stevie held his own & answered Albert back with some of his own licks.. A lifelong friendship & mentorship began that night.. And before his death in 1990 he was clean sober & even more powerful a player than he had ever been.. One of the coolest things about him he openly talked on stage about what getting clean & sober did for him but he NEVER judged or preached or talked at you. He simply shared amongst friends. Fun fact: he had to be convinced to record Voodoo Child & Little Wing, because he didn't think he could do them justice.
I am jealous of the bass player. I like how he keeps looking over at Stevie like, I can't believe I'm standing here next to this guy. This is awesome, just gotta find a nice groove, let Stevie do his thing and watch and pay attention to know when he's done. Dream job.
Tommy Shannon is a beast! Lol! He’s not “in awe” of SRV. When ya jam, there’s no need for song structure. Just cues from the leader, and ride the groove.😉👍
@@generatorofheavy7761 Before Tommy Shannon play with SRV he was Johnny Winters bass player. He really knew how to pick'um. Two awesome Texas 6 string gunslingers.
Stevie Ray was playing professionally at the age of 9, he hung around his older brother {famous for guitar work in The Fabulous Thunderbirds} so he got to watch and learn from all the real blues players from the side of the stage then jammin' live with them by the age of 12. He and his band nearly single handidly brought true blues back to the front lines of popularity, and when he got top billing he brought all of them, the 3 Kings, buddy Guy, all of them along with him.He also had the line of modern hard rock to the table, masterfully displaying his magic, playing what his mind dreams up flowing throughout his body. He truly was a master of masters.Kudos to ya'll for finding and learning about these rockers.
THEMASTEROFYOU2000 SRV’s Canadian sessions with his idol Albert King is some of the finest guitar playing around.,The way they fall back and play harmony for each other when there is a breakout is almost flawless. You’d think they were in the studio. A rare guitar gem for enthusiasts.🎼🎸😎
Great post.all true. Magic, instinct, genius set him apart - including that little sprinkle of blues ‘it’ that the masters were stunned by. I never was fond of electric guitar rips… until I heard Stevie. Once in a while I’ll be in Goodwill and they’ll play “Let’s dance,” great song… that I don’t notice until I hear Stevie. He makes my heart sing. I raised my kids on SRV and Ella Fitzgerald (primarily). My little one called them Stevie Rayon and Elephant Gerald.she insisted on hearing ZZ Top (rest in power) La Grange every day after I picked her little one from daycare. She is my Pride and Joy, and Little Sister. I ignore the nonsense and interpret these songs the way I want to. Celebrating my daughter who is not only a little sister, but my pride and joy. Especially my pride and joy.
Stevie Ray was from the Oak Cliff part of Dallas, TX. He played in Austin, TX quite a lot. Before he got killed, he and his older brother, Jimmy Vaughan put out an album called Family Style, which is worth the listen!!&!
One question. How did you guys get so old without hearing Stevie Ray??? You should get outta the hood more often. See what you've been missing????? (:>))
That's nothing, I was telling my friend about Bohemian Rhapsody (the movie). She said that one of her colleagues at work never heard a Queen song. I asked how did she avoid it? She said that's what she asked her. It's like those people that you find that have never seen The Christmas Story or The Princess Bride.
@@steviedee132 Yes,, I agree. However,, the problem with all these youngsters 'reviews' of 'old school' music is generational. They don't realize that all this old music was on vinyl LP's. When we listened to it we rarely lifted the needle off the LP for fear of scratching the disk. If you did,, it was fucked. I find it extremely amusing that youngsters freak out at a real person playing a real guitar. No computers, no 'auto-tune',, nothing but talent and rehearsal. Kids are so fucking spoiled today. They have it sooooo good they invent crisis to whine about.
@@francotemplet7313 not everyone is "spoiled" today like u think ,jesus ,people act like today's generation is the worst despite all the stupid shit other generations have done lol
Franco Templet 23 years old here. I play guitar...and bass...and drums...and I sing with no auto tune. What do you play man? Don’t talk shit on an entire generation when it’s a very large group of people, and you obviously don’t know what they’re really like. Try talking to one of us “youngsters” once in a while, we may surprise you. Don’t blame a kids for being spoiled...blame the parents. It’s all perspective.
Stevie's sweating because his style of playing was VERY physical. He play all night with an intensity that most players couldn't maintain for more than a song or two. Excellent choice of tune and player, by the way.
Saw him a few months before his death and was an unbelievable performance opening for Robert Plant. Poor Robert had huge shoes to fill and was booed as he got on stage. Nobody wanted Stevie to go and Plant knew it. Worcester mass.
He did a cameo there in K. C. When the Fabulous Thunderbirds played outside on a Friday nite , I believe it was Barney Allis plaza. My brother and me went to watch e and Stevie showed up in the middle of the Show.
This man ruined me. When I first heard him, I never wanted to listen to another guitar player and I still don’t. Once god whispers in your ear, you don’t want to hear what anybody else has to say.
Stevie is a Legend...And he literally self taught himself by listening to the best!! RIP SRV.... LEGEND!! ......YOU need to listen to MORE 😉 of his music!! Gone to soon!! The Best.........
I’ve watched a lot of these reaction videos, I enjoy watching people see Stevie Ray Vaughan for the first time. This is the first comment I’ve made on ANY of them. The fellow on the right Gets it and appreciates the music. The fella on the left just likes hearing himself talk and showing off for the camera is a knucklehead. I could tell the guy on the right really appreciated the music. The guy on the left just liked making comments and trying to look good for his video. I don’t think I’ll be back. But enjoy the music! Take care
Back in the day when musicians actually developed a talent and performed . Stevie Made it look easy smooth, tight with a huge dose of soul added. Dude could play like that for hours
His brother, Jimmy Vaughan played in a band called The Chessmen that was the opening act for Jimi Hendrix. I've met their mother and have seen photos of Jimi Hendrix in their living room, so Stevie Ray was up close and personal with Hendrix at a very young age.
Live blues is EVERYTHING. I’ve seen BB King, Clapton, Buddy Guy, Bobby Blue Bland, Ray Charles, Johnny Lang, Carlos Santana, Eddie Van Halen, Slash….nobody comes close to SRV. No disrespect to some of my absolute favorite guitar players, but SRV is the 🐐
Stevie Ray Vaughn was born in Dallas, Texas. He is revered as the king by old Texas hippie chicks like me. Many tears were shed when he died and he lives on in his incomparable music.
Saw SRV and Albert King many times in Austin, Always completely drained by the end of the shows , not stoned, not drunk , just emotionally spent every time ! RIP~SRV
This fellas is the BLUES. SRV was playing on stage with BB King, Muddy Waters and ALL the greats when he was just 13 years old. He embodied the Blues. SRV was one of the greatest Blues guitarists of ALL time
Our brother Stevie was born and raised in Texas, a true American through and through. His wardrobe has a lot of Native American influence, and his brother Jimmy is the drummer.
Stevie was a great guitarist and he was also a great guy. He had a substance abuse problem and he ended up getting himself clean and sober. The story is if he was playing a concert and someone would ask him how he got himself off the drugs, he would try to help them get themselves off the drugs and he was happy to talk them through how he did it.
Exactly I LOVE YOUR COMMENT !!!!! ..he would even take people to meetings...he gave it alll away to others so that he could keep it....that's how living sober works....he has been an INTERGAL part of my sobriety ....he was and still is truly selfless man..not just the goat guitarist but a true selfless soul that he enjoyed giving so much it makes me cry when I listen to his music...especially life without you when he talks about his story and how we alll just need to learn life on life terms and to constantly CONTINUE giving back and helping others ....HE has been like a sponcer to me and my own sponcer here on earth says the exact same thing that stevie talks about....TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF SO THAT YOU CAN BE AROUND TO HELP OTHERS...IF WE DONT TAKE CARE OF OURSELVES FIRST WE WONT BE AROUND FOR THOSE WHO NEED HELP ...STEVIE IS STILL ALIVE IN MY HEART AND NOT A DAY GOES BY THAT I DONT THINK TO MYSELF....BE LIKE STEVIE BE LIKE STEVIE BE LIKE STEVIE ....HELP ORHERS HELP OTHERS HELP OTHERS... Come off it, that’s the damn point: see some cats react in real-time as we all do. They just pause to vocalize what we feel in like 3 seconds. Appreciate.
A joint for me witch you could get away with back in my day cause you could smoke at concerts then I don't smoke cigarettes or drink just smoke a blunt and chill
Stevie Ray Vaughan was born in Dallas, but made his reputation in Austin. There is a statue of him there. If you want to see an awesome photo, Google " Stevie Ray Vaughan statue flood picture." One year they had some bad flooding in Austin, and there is a famous photo of nothing but Stevie's statue Sticking out above the waterline. He looks like he's walking on water like the God he is. Stevie was known as a bluesman of course, but if you want to hear him bring down the nasty Texas funk, check out "Couldn't Stand The Weather."
@Chris Collins Got to love the old Dallas / Ft Worth feud. Everyone in the area has their side. Some love Ft. I worked in the music distribution industry back in the day, got to meet him a couple of times & one down to earth beautiful man! Every concert was pure majic! In some interview, he said there was no "color" to music, especially the blues, we can all relate to the blues. I'm from Texas too, a huge blues fan, from Robert Johnson to Stevie Ray! We lost him way too soon! "If there's a rock 'n roll heaven...& blues...what a helluva band!" Weird to think about it, as I'm almost 50, but still remember my parents not understanding why I was in tears. Only comfort was being able to hear his influence on other musicians...
Mike was playing Antones, Steven was in the back with Clifford Antone watching the show. We didn't even know he was there. Mike was gonna end the show early because he didn't have another guitar to play, but his was the same model Fender Strat that Stevie plays. Stevie went out to his car and took the pickups off his, brought them to Mike and said something like, "Keep playing, brother. You're on fire!"
True story. I *TRULY* miss that man.
RIP SRV!
That day is burned into my heart as well.

He was from Dallas, Tx. I got to see him 15 ft away in 1983 in Dallas at his homecoming tour.
drsmoothwater me too.
Damn cool story !!

He was unbelievably unique! Listen to him all the time. It was a helicopter crash.
We lost too many that way. Recall years ago Aretha refused to fly...she too many FBN operators transporting musicians in private planes/choppers.
Kimberly Poole : Most musicians disliked the touring, as Bob Geldof described, to pay for making more music, but SRV was just the opposite, he said, ‘It’s really all about playing with an audience.’
Whatever his skin tone, SRV was a true soul-man!❤️🌎✌🏾

Yeah and SRV was head and shoulders above all of them. I know you won't agree but it's a fact.

Stevie was only 5’5”... but every square inch of him was imbued with sheer talent. He didn’t just play music, he embodied it!
#lostandfound
His hands were the size and strength of someone much larger to do what he did to those thick guitar strings.
Dream job.

We lost him way too soon! "If there's a rock 'n roll heaven...& blues...what a helluva band!" Like BB King, he made that guitar sing & wail & was every part of it, an extension of his own heart & soul. RIP, dear Stevie! Glad I got to meet you!
SRV is the shit! Dude was the best guitarist I've ever seen.
Words can't describe how great he is mind blowing
I had this song cranked all the way up in my house all during Hurricane Harvey.
A bowl packed with good green, and a glass of wine. Thats my Stevie moment...love this man.
When Stevie Ray played he became one with the guitar would always loved if him and Jimi Hendrix got together
"Stroke off into the sunset...welp, alright then..." lmfao 😂😂😂
I'll never forget the first time I heard and saw video of Stevie Ray Vaughan. It just completely blew me away. Hands down the best guitarist ever! He was absolutely incredible!
This Thursday, Aug 27 will be 30 years without SRV. Thank you for keeping his music alive.
