SRV was "shredding" rhythm guitar AND lead guitar at the same time. He was able to play both and magically everything he did was "greater than the sum of its parts". He was an amazing guitar wizard and there will never be another like him again.
He had some of the largest strongest hands. So much natural talent. People talk about "the best", "the greatest", "genius"... No one rivals Stevie Ray Vaughan.
Stevie Ray Vaughan started playing the guitar when he was 7 years old. He never learned to read music. He's totally free-styling it up there; never played a song the same way twice. Arguably the greatest blues/blues rock guitarist of all time. He's in the Blues Hall of Fame and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Give it up for his band Double Trouble for laying down the groove; allowed Stevie to do whatever he wanted to out front.

I’m with you! SRV and I went to the same high school in Dallas Tx. At the same time. I wasn’t aware of it until a few years ago, but just the idea of walking through the same halls of Kimball and perhaps passing by him daily is enough for me.

Mosaic Rose I was Lucky to see Stevie on August 24, 1990 at the Kalamazoo County Fair in Kalamazoo, Michigan I was 14 at the time a show, I will never forget the Concert there is Audio of the Concert, I cried when I heard Stevie left us.
Saw him at the garden . Fire and fury tour with jeff beck 6 months before he died.
You just witnessed the greatest guitarist to ever put a Strat over his shoulder. There's a reason every great blues artist wanted to collaborate with him....and many did. Stevie was a freaking WIZARD!

Walked into a party in early summer of 83. the just released texas flood album was playing on a really good stereo and that tone buried into my marrow in seconds. I ran straight to the turntable to find out who I was listening to.

I love watching these reactions! I was lucky enough to see him live five different times, it is hard to truly describe the experience. I was a young guitar player and he was my hero. I even got to meet him after a show in 1989. I was honestly a little scared to meet him, I was thinking, what if in real life he is an asshole? It would have destroyed my image of him. I waited by his tour bus for a good couple of hours and he finally came out, all by himself, no entourage or anything, shook my hand with a grip that actually hurt, put his arm around me like I was his kid brother and asked me " how did I sound tonight?" It was a sincere question, not like, I'm Stevie Ray. I know how I sounded, I just wanted to hear it from you. He was genuinely one of the nicest people I have ever met. The day he died I cried

Fun fact, that crushing grip you experienced checks out. SRV was notorious for his preference for absolutely, monstrously thick string gauges. So compared to typical players the man might as well be pulling off and bending some steel aircraft cabling. Contributing to that gooner grip.

He played with 15 gauge strings. Almost unheard of. I believe Albert King may have played with them as well. And Stevie still broke those thick strings.

If you noticed at 6:33 he dropped his guitar pick and reached down and picked it up and didn’t miss a beat. Unbelievable !!! I watched him play in Austin and Dallas and I was in a trance how good he was in person.
Kelly Spann He reached down to give a squelch adjustment to his tube screamer pedal. You can hear the change. But he could do whatever he wanted to. Him and the guitar are the same being. Some licks can be played with just the fret fingers and no right hand at all. We would notice

Tommy Thompson 1st show, July 29 1984,. Salem mass at an abandoned coast guard station overlooking Marblehead harbor with sailboats. 500 people. 3 months later he was carnagnie hall🤷♂️. That was right after couldn’t stand the weather came out. I am blessed
@@phillinfree You are blessed. No doubt about that. The Salem concert sounds especially incredible. I never saw him. As a matter of fact, as big of a music fan as I always was, I didn't hear of SRV (at least not that I was aware of) until the day he died. I was at home early on the evening that he passed away. My boss called me. Something he never did. He asked if I had heard the news. I hadn't. His wife was crying in the background. They both knew that I loved music. He had never heard Steely Dan's Aja album until I played it at work one day. He loved it. His wife got on the phone bawling. She told me the details of his death and how he overcame drugs and was just then becoming popular among mainstream folk. The next day at work my boss played some SRV for me. Needless to say he blew me away.
Tommy Thompson I heard Mary had a little lamb on the radio and went to get the cassette and couldn’t stand the weather was in the store too so I bought both. My brother hated me after that because that’s all I listened to. When Stevie died my sister sent me a condolence card in the mail

You know what it is about him? You rarely witness real God given talent. When you just GOT it, when it genuinely comes from a pure place from your soul. Stevie was and is your favorite guitarist’s favorite guitar player. He was a master musician whom was regarded by the best blues players of his time to be the best they ever heard. Stevie’s mentor and greatest influence was the great Albert King. Stevie also deeply respected and admired Jimmy Hendrix. Rock guitar legend, Eric Clapton said, “I have never seen a man more at one with his ax than Stevie Ray Vaughn is.” Eric was at a concert and when he was asked to play after Stevie, Eric refused saying, “How do you follow that?”
This was the first time we had ever seen or heard of him!! Definitely looking forward to more!!

It's actually Voodoo CHILE, not child. But, yes, great Jimi Hendrix cover, and I will take heat for this, but one of the few times the cover is better than the original. Of course that is MY opinion.
@@vandersgarage4682 If you look at the album, (Electric Ladyland) you'll see that they're listed as "Voodoo Child Slight Return", i.e. the shortened version and Voodoo Chile (studio, long version). Don't know why they did it that way, but I've always loved especially the long version with Steve Winwood and Jack Casady.

There is Voodoo Chile (Long Version), Voodoo Chile (Slight Return) and Voodoo Child ( Slight Return ). All three show up in Jimi's music and albums. However, in his hand written lyrics, it is Voodoo Chile. It is also listed as Voodoo Chile ( Slight Return ) in SRV's albums where the song makes an appearance.

Correct, also called Tremolo and Vibrato although it is not a tremolo, that's a different effect. Edit: might as well say what it does. You can alter the pitch with this thing. You can loosen (and with some versions also tighten) the tension on the strings which results in pitch changes. When you pull the strings tighter the pitch goes up, if you give them a bit more slack it goes down.
I noticed how you guys were smiling. Stevie has that affect on you. Glad you finally discovered him.

To be honest, loads of the best rock musicians cant read music. It's not that unusual - Hendrix, Clapton, Page couldn't read music
Most guitar players can’t read a note of music on the seat. I know I can’t. However, most good guitar players know the notes on the neck. Or at least know how to work within the confines of what they know. You don’t have to be a Steve Vai or an Eric Johnson to be a great guitar player. Although it helps.

He played every song different every time. He just let it flow from the soul each time.
Stevie and Jimi were the best ever...in no particular order. He's dead 30 years now (which is mind blowing to me), but I saw him twice and you're correct; his playing got you into a grove, but his playing also entranced you. A musician like him comes around once every couple, or three generations.

Had the pleasure of seeing hi live three times in my life. Each show was great in its own way. My main remembrance was coming home after each show with my cheeks hurting in pain from smiling too much. Kind of like watching an incredible stand-up comedian who makes you laugh for like an hour straight! Three f the greatest moments of my life!

I saw him live in concert in 1984. Some "reactors" to his videos have asked why the audience is so chill and quiet... and y'all nailed it on the head. It's because we were standing there with eyes as wide as saucers thinking.... "OMG... How?....Uh.... Is this for real?" Everyone was in a trance.

Keep in mind those are the thickest strings you can buy!! And he breaks em like dry spaghetti on a regular basis.

By the way, that little silver thing that you were talking about on the guitar is called a whammy bar (or tremolo arm). It allows the guitarist to vary the tension of the strings, changing the pitch to create vibrato or a bend effect.

I get chills EVERY. FREAKIN'. TIME. SRV completely owns the guitar. It's part of him. And rumor has it that it has to smoke a cigarette when he's done with it. :-)

Simply the best that ever played the guitar! EVER!
He played with strings so thick - huge strings, VERY hard to bend... but he had forearms with the strength of Popeye.. he was a gift from God and he blew minds every time he played. Got to meet him in person backstage in San Diego. Nicest guy ever. A gentleman. A year later he was gone.

I'm always happy to watch the reactions to music I've been in love with for years. Stevie doesn't disappoint! Please check out some more of his music. It's phenomenal! He wasn't able to read music. But he taught himself how to play. Stevie loved Jimi Hendrix & Voodoo Chile was one of his songs. Texas Flood, Life by the Drop, If the House is a Rockin', Mary had a Lil' Lamb, Pride & Joy.
Stevie put his heart & soul into his music! That's why you feel it like you do. He makes you feel it & you can't help but start moving.

Oh, and by the way the little silver stick thing on the guitar is called a whammy bar. When you're playing it allows you to vary the sound of the strings as your playing by loosening the tightness on the strings & then releasing it allows the strings to tighten up again. When you're as talented as SRV was..... you can make that guitar sing as you walk it on out there & put you're foot it!

There is SOOOO much live content out there (btw, for future reactions, keep it live...don't go with the studio versions...although, awesome, too, you don't get his energy watching him). Btw, that bar is called a wammy bar. It actually is used to distort the sound by changing the tension on the strings...usually by lifting the bridge.
