A few things to comment. First, “little girl” is not meant to be taken literally in this song. It’s obviously talking about his woman. At the time of this performance, Stevie had gotten sober .In the performances you’ve reacted to where he is sweating buckets and seems to be on another planet, that is definitely mind bending amounts of cocaine. Before and during shows he would continue downing whisky with cocaine mixed in. He was a real fiend, and it was intense to witness. It was beautiful to see the change when he got sober and happy. He used to always mention “living on borrowed time.” After seeing him find balance and happiness in sobriety, it was devastating to het the news of his death.
Could literally be a little girl, little and girl doesn't mean adolescent. The term has been used throughout the history of music by many artists. When I was young the age of consent was 13 in parts of the US and elsewhere.
Right on. While I enjoy the kinda magic and energy of of those performances, it's hard to watch in a way. His sober performances are cleaner, and I enjoy watching them knowing he's healthier and happier.
@@pablozee6359 don't think I missed the point, ..what kept him from hurting him, her the other guy and was manhood.., not culture not macho shit, he turned away, probably 3 months down the road full of heartache and mer someone completely different ....unlike today's cowards , snowflake, entitled little pussys that have to take out her , the kids, the crossing guards , the lunch lady, the bus drivers, cuz their little tiny narcissist heart got broken....Cry me a damn River
He actually finally got clean in late 1986 and this performance was recorded in 1989. He kept getting better after sobriety. Unfortunately, he did all that work not to die an early death from drugs and alcohol and a helicopter took him out.
Echoing the other comments here - Stevie WAS a cokehead up until 1986 when he got clean and sober. This was 1989 and he was absolutely clean and sober here. He was simply just IN IT at that moment his eyes rolled back :)
Stevie commented after getting clean and sober that playing was so much better, that before he got straight it felt like he was playing with "mittens on." RIP brother from one addict to another. And you need to check out "Mary had a Little Lamb" from this same concert.
Stevie was totally clean and sober in this video.. But that eye roll does show how deep into playing he was.. His physicality matched the energy of the song for sure.. This whole concert was absolute fire!! Definitely check the rest of it out 😊❤
Thank God Stevie was completely sober by this performance date. He became even better once he did. He enjoyed about 3 1/2 sober years before his tragic death 💔
Learn his history before commenting, Stevie was clean and sober here, he'd been sober for a few years by this time. He wrote a few songs about his trials and tribulations, Living life by the Drop, Step by Step.
Stevie was clean during during that particular time, he was reformed. He died in a helicopter crash, not from drugs. The cocaine song Eric Clapton performed was written by JJ Cale, who was great in his own right. He wrote several songs that were covered by Eric Clapton and others. Ya'll might want to do some research before your reactions.

Stevie Ray Vaughan in 1985 got clean off the drugs. If you listen to the live without you after 1985 in the middle of the song he gives a testimony how he got clean off the drugs and he hopes that other people could to. How he died was in a helicopter crash. He also had one son.😢
He was singing about his lady. Not a daughter. Just some suggestions: Lenny, Tightrope, Riviera Paradise, Life by the Drop, or his two songs on MTV Unplugged.
As others have said, he was sober in this video. In my opinion, I always thought he got sweat in his eye and rolled his eyes back to make it better without touching it. I don't know though, just a thought lol. Love this performance though. One of my favorites for sure.
I remember reading that when he got clean and sober he was afraid he couldn’t play and sing as good as he did on cocaine but this video says other wise .

I think most people forget the time era these are in, where there were no LEDs, where the Spotlights were using voltages in the 1000s of watts, and the fresnel and leekos above the stage were using 500 & 750-watt lamps. Little girls would get easy-bake ovens for Christmas which had a 100 or 150watt bulb that did the cooking...Stevie is basically the cake getting cooked in this giant version of an easy-baked oven. When people point out the other band members aren't getting baked as much, it is due to there being a small fraction of the lighting devoted to their space, and most of their space is lit by a wash of the other lights, whereas SRV's space is always the focus, even before he enters stage and long after he leaves. They had to have a heck of a lot of lights back then to remove the shadows, and color flesh while dampening white colors. Add in the mood and chase sequences for stage effects, and you easily have 30k watts being focused on the stage.
Also, this has to be THE absolute fastest anyone has ever played the blues. Dave you play the guitar, how it didn’t blow you away how insanely fast his picking and fingering where is beyond me hahah

Great reaction! Not only was he a magnificent performer, but as kind and humble as he was talented. I was blessed to have spent some time with him during his sober years. Precious moments, for sure.❤
"Little Girl" was a phrase used, years ago, to mean "women"....When ladies would "excuse themselves" from a table to go (usually as a group) to the restroom - they'd say: "We're goin' to the Lil' Girl's Room"....and, about that time: Men were often known as "Tall, Dark and Handsome".....so, it's not a child he's speaking about.... :)
That video of Stevie was from their second appearance on Austin City Limits. Steve (and Tommy) were clean and sober on that episode. Stevie (even) got better and better than ever in sobriety. The eye roll, was probably nothing more that Stevie being Stevie and channeling the music. He wasn't sweating a lot here, either. Earlier footage, when he was using, he sweat a lot.
Did you say he "stole a plane, that's how he died."? SRV died in a helicopter crash. He and several legendary blues guitarists, including Eric Clapton and Buddy Guy, had just finished a concert a little north of Chicago and along with a few others was being flown to Chicago. The investigation concluded it was pilot error (the pilot was not Stevie) who wasn't certified for "instrument" flight. There was heavy fog in the area and the pilot must have become disoriented resulting in the tragic crash.
He was arguably the best guitar player ever walk the earth, unfortunately died in a helicopter crash after a concert. I still remember hearing it on the radio at work, sad day for sure.he put all of his being through his fingers and on the strings.pure consciousness awesomeness unmatched incredible.got clean and sober. Rip srv
Your talking about wanting to buy a Strat, Eric Clapton said about Stevie, when someone see's Stevie for the first time it make's them want to go out and buy a guitar and learn to play. But those of us that have played with Stevie, it make us want to QUIT!
When SRV puts his Strat behind his back, the guitar is still in the same position, just moved behind the body. This allows him to use his muscle memory for all those pentatonic blues scales (let me know, I can teach you simple scales through text) that he played thousands of times as a kid in the dark room back in the late 60s early 70s when he would practice all night, falling asleep with the guitar in his hands.
The stolen plan instance was how a couple of guys from Ozzy Osborne's group died. And they were just joy riding in a plane that belonged to a friend of the bands and he had experience flying.
I don't know if you knew that Stevie played 13 gauge strings and would go as heavy as 17 gauge . With you playing guitars you will know those are more like piano wires than guitar strings ! Somehow he was able to do the bends , hammer ons and hammer offs . A lot of other well known guitar players say he had very large and very strong hands . And somehow he still managed to break strings . On one of my guitars , my 48 year old Peavey T 60 is strung with 13 gauge strings . After trying to play it and when putting it up I have to back the strings off . If I leave the tension on , I usually have to adjust the truss bar to get it back flat before I play . One thing that has always stuck in my brain is what Eric Clapton said . He said that while driving his car . One of Stevie's songs came on his radio and he instantly pulled off the road to listen and he had to find out who this guy was ! Also in the same interview he said , Stevie never got lost or hung up , he always knew where he was going and exactly how he was going to get there !! Also there were times when Stevie had to super glue the skin back onto his fingers to finish a show !
Did I hear right? Did he just make the moronic comment that he thought SRV stole a plane & crashed. Never underestimate someone's possible stupidity. I mean, who disparages someone's name in death like that?
Just to clarify. SRV was clean and sober at the time of this performance, which was shortly before his untimely death, making it even more tragic. The song was my favorite off of the last Double Trouble album, and when I saw him perform on a double headlining tour with Jeff Beck, this was the one he pulled out all the stops on, playing the solo behind his back. You cite Eric Clapton's version of Cocaine as being a drug song, but it was written in a very sarcastic way by JJ Cale. Not a glorification of the drug, but cautionary.
Great reaction as always Dave. BTW, love the Cowboys From Hell tat. 'Getcha pull!' RIP Dimebag and Vinnie Paul... I'm from New Orleans, so I've met Phil a few times and had some drinks with him at Mardi Gras...
In interviews when asked to play, Stevie admits, I don't know how to just play. When the band gets behinds me and I get that groove, then I can fall into a song. But just playing in the quiet studio was too "ungroovable". Stevie has no idea what notes he is playing. Like many of the greats, reading music never happened or was abandoned, and everything is played by "feel" or "ear".
I love your channel. Especially your SRV reactions. I think y’all are great!!! I would love to see your reaction to Life Without You live from The Capitol Theater. Please keep the SRV reactions coming!!!!!
Just think, Double trouble used to be Chris Latham on drums (here) Tommy Shannon on bass, (here) Stevie on guitar, (yes he was on cocaine everyday until 1985, 4 years before he died he got sober) and they had a female lead singer in the 70s in Texas.
People are seriously complaining that Ash wore the same black t-shirt for a few posts? She's been sitting next to the same redhead for longer than that! 😉
Stevie got sober in 1985, and surprisingly, his playing barely missed a step, some think he got better those last few years, I am not so sure. Tommy Shannon, is his book claimed that the El Mocambo performance was their best on tape. However, SRV almost died an hour before the show, and had medical personnel revive him with lots of IV fluids and vitamins. He was sweating out liters of saline, and pouring out so many extra notes, in that show, he nearly caused a Texas flood.
I was blessed to see him play many times, and even if I didn’t know what year this was I can tell he was clean here. When he was messed up his music actually probably flowed better. When he got clean he unleashed furious bursts of notes, just like he does here. He played some bad shows, if you can believe it, just before he had the breakdown that convinced him he had to clean up. A friend of mine was working the Austin Opera House when they were recording the ‘Live Alive’ album, and he let me in to hear some, and it was not good: loud as hell, out of tune, miscommunication, even dead-ends, which he never does. When he got clean he was gunshy for a while, not sure if he could still play. This video is recorded when he’s been clean for a while and has his confidence back, which unfortunately makes it near the end.
Prior to 1985 yes he was on drugs but he went to rehab and got clean, he did not steal a plane he died in a helicopter crash leaving a concert in bad weather the pilot ran into the side of a mountain because of the fog.
He died in a helicopter crash while exiting a late night performance from Alpine Valley, a small ski resort outside East Troy, Wisconsin. It had been a foggy late night and the helicopter pilot misjudged the height of the surrounding ski slopes.
To think that WHEN FIRST EXPOSED TO THE MONTREAUX AUDIENCE the trio was boo'd for playing what THOSE ELITISTS CONSIDERED NOT BLUES ..... and good Lord knows that is ARROGANCE OVER IGNORANCE big time. The man was next level.
Yeah. "Little girl" is a frequent term in music, especially rock and roll. It almost always refers to a girlfriend, not a literal "little girl" as in a girl too young. Of course, the age of consent was very young in some states. When Jerry Lee Lewis went to the UK to perform, there was a big deal made about his 13 year old wife, who just happened to also be his cousin. It was not uncommon for girls to get married at a much younger age back then. It was not considered untoward. An older, more stable, more settled man was desirable as a husband. Having a young daughter get married was usually a plus for her family, socially and sometimes economically. Things are very different now, but young girls can still get married with their parents' consent, usually 16 years old or so.
In the US, any unmarried couple uses the terms girlfriend, and boyfriend, even as adults. Someone being someones guy or girl is a common thought and term.
Good reaction and it's an SRV vid that I haven't seen as much. There's probably many other commenters that have said the same but you have done a fair amount of SRV blues but i think you'd appreciate "Couldn't Stand the Weather" (more funky either live in Austin or at the Capitol Theatre) or "Life Without You "(more soulful: Capitol theatre). P.S. Not every roll of the eyes means someone is on drugs.
Fun fact: Stevie Ray Vaughan never learned how to read music. All of his guitar rifts and solos are completely by feel and sound. That’s why if you listen to a lot of his music, a lot of the guitar rifts have very similar melodies and note runs.
Hey guys, SRV is awesome. I just noticed you haven’t reacted to Van Halen. If you want to be blown away, react to Van Halen’s Live without a Net tour in Las Vegas. Do Van Halen’s eruption solo. You will not be disappointed.
You Guys got this very WRONG. You left it at him being a drug addict. That is not what he was. When he died in a helicopter crash because of an in experienced pilot. He was sober. He wrote and sang many songs about it. "Tightrope" and "Life by the Drop" are two examples.
He was cold stone clean and sober in this video.. He looked so much better and healthier in this video than all the other live videos. I used to have this concert on VHS.. And I have the cd version in my collection of all my favorite music.

Ash moving in! (Visualizing cartoon Ash balancing a World Trade Center sized stack of arts and crafts milk crates into a Manchester flat...)
Riviera Paradise from the same show. It has a Blues/Jazz vibe to it. You'll Like it!
This 89 performance on Austin City Limits was sober Stevie. The 87 performance on the same pbs program was the cocaine and whisky fueled Stevie.
He died in a helicopter crash while exiting a late night performance from Alpine Valley, a small ski resort outside East Troy, Wisconsin. It had been a foggy late night and the helicopter pilot misjudged the height of the surrounding ski slopes.
No disrespect Stevie Ray Vaughn is legendary
And by the way, Stevie did NOT have any children.
Check out the song Tick Tock People, by Stevie and his brother
In the US, any unmarried couple uses the terms girlfriend, and boyfriend, even as adults. Someone being someones guy or girl is a common thought and term.
SRV was recovered and CLEAN on this ACL.....
You must react to srv pride and joy and testify from MTV unplugged. He kills the acoustic guitar.
He didn't die. Still in an airplane. He died, coming home from a gig and a helicopter
Stevie died in a helicopter crash after a concert at Alpine Valley Wisconsin USA August 26th 1990.
By this time he was Clean and Sober till the day he died!
Fun fact:
Stevie Ray Vaughan never learned how to read music. All of his guitar rifts and solos are completely by feel and sound.
That’s why if you listen to a lot of his music, a lot of the guitar rifts have very similar melodies and note runs.
🛁🛁🛁🛁🛁🛁🛁🚿🚿😊
That organ in the background reminds you that gospel & the blues were (uncomfortable) cousins.
He was clean.
No drugs at this time in his life.....
Hey guys, SRV is awesome. I just noticed you haven’t reacted to Van Halen. If you want to be blown away, react to Van Halen’s Live without a Net tour in Las Vegas. Do Van Halen’s eruption solo. You will not be disappointed.
He had been drug and alcohol free for 3 yrs when this was filmed! 👍
You f'd this one up good.
You Guys got this very WRONG. You left it at him being a drug addict. That is not what he was. When he died in a helicopter crash because of an in experienced pilot. He was sober. He wrote and sang many songs about it. "Tightrope" and "Life by the Drop" are two examples.
Not sure about this show, but at the Live at the El Mocambo, he was borderline overdosing on cocaine.
He was cold stone clean and sober in this video.. He looked so much better and healthier in this video than all the other live videos. I used to have this concert on VHS.. And I have the cd version in my collection of all my favorite music.
@@DrPaul-xf4no Thank you, sir.
I still have the VHS tape that contains both of their ACL performances. Nothing to play it on, though! LOL
It's the blues! He's definitely not talking about a daughter.
Stole a plane? WHATTTTTT
