- Deep scratches look hideous and depressing! This video shows how to repair those scratches while preserving the clear coat in and near the surrounding area. Sure...you could make repeated passes over the effected area, spiking temperatures and stressing the clear coat. Or let me show you how to repair the scratch with minimal stress to the clear coat.

Wet Sanding to repair major imperfections and scratches is the least stressful method for your clear coat. What are you waiting for? Grab some junk panels and practice! :)
Apex Detail do you have a “one size fits all” polisher for a weekend warrior and occasional detailer? I have a torqx and it’s not quite powerful enough. I was thinking a 15mm throw for a more general use but would a 21 be better and to also use the torqx sometimes?
Greenie_The _Detailer I use Meg’s microfiber pads and will probably have to try some of those eurofiber pads
Greenie_The _Detailer I can normally 1 step with d300 and the microfiber cutting pad. Even on a 2002 Kia that’s never been polished before had wonderful results. Followed up by turtle wax hybrid solutions coating. Good stuff
Did you guys try lake country pads they have bunch of different pads I tried lamb wool cutting pad with sonax cut Max they work really good.. Im wondering if anyone else had chance to try them out... Btw mister Brian I have to thank you I'm watching your yt channel for a year in that year I learned soo much from you... I got soo much knowledge how to polish how to protect your car and every product review that u posted on this channel helps me to choose which product is perfect for car that I'm working on in that moment... I even get a promotion in my company from experience that I got from watching your yt channel...thank you soo much... You're the best..
alberto
I watched this video three years ago thinking I'm too scared to mess up still but thanks to your video I felt more comfortable trying it out. Being from Trinidad, there aren't many places that offer detailing as a course. Your step by step videos are a blessing. 👏🏾
Finally someone that's realistic about what you can get out, not claiming you can make the scratched area looked better then new!
I agree! The only way you can make it look like new is if you have paint correction work done! People need to understand that us detailers are not magicians we can't make something completely dissappear
There is nobody that explains the process better than Brian!!!
This channel is one of the best but chrisfix actually explains things a little bit better when it comes to some of the scratch removal process.... example was doing a wet test to see how deep the scratch is. If it’s just cut through the clear coat and compound, polish and wax isn’t enough to smoothen the lines in the clear coat, you gotta sand it down using 2 different types of sand paper 3000 and 5000.... the. Polish and wax....
If it’s a deep scratch and it is straight cuts into the primer, your only two choice is touch up paint, wax
Or get the entire panel to be repainted which is expensive..... apex doesn’t really delve into that.... but I still love these folks content
No!!!
This channel has reached the stage where I click Like, before even watching!
Brother, I just want to say THANK YOU 🙏, every startup detailer needs to see and learn lesson from this. Setting up expectations too high for customer will not bring more business in longer run but being honest and upfront will. Customer needs to be educated what scratches cannot be permanently removed to set their expectations level at the right level. Thank you 🙏 again for another great and honest video.
Perfect job with this video. No wasted time and to the most important points. Keep up the great content creation!!!
This is excellent. I used this technique on my wife’s car, which had multiple scratches on several body panels. Worked like a charm. Massive improvement!
Best detailing channel on TH-cam, I always enjoy and take something away from your videos. Thanks for all your efforts Brian 👍
I have spent months researching into spray painting and discovered a great website at Magic Painter Method (check it out on google)
# deep scratch on car repair cost
So, you made that scratch literally disappear and without touchup paint. I'd say that is a success! Thanks for sharing
U have managed to demystify and create a sustainable process with best methods & materials to take out deep or shallow scratches. As a retired Process Engineer, your visual aids, process details, materials used steps are second to none! I prob hit LIKE like others do, before watching the video and SAVE to my personal Car Detailing Hints list for future ref.
Very impressed also you was honest enough to show the scratch was still there If you had done that job for me I would’ve been mega impressed
Thanks for this I was terrified of wet sanding can't believe how easy you made it look! Great video!
Best video I have seen on youtube. VERY simple to follow and understand!!!
Great video! The only thing I do different is after sanding, I apply a very thin line of clear coat to the scratch and let it dry for 24 hours. Then I level the clear with a leveling solution before one more light sand with 3000-4000 before I polish out the area. It takes a little more time having to wait 24 hours, but the scratch will actually be filled by clear. On a side note, GM touchup paint has a built in container of clear on the opposite end of the paint tube. You simply apply a thin layer with to soft foam applicator that is included with the touchup paint. I do the same process with paint chips.
This is what I'm going to do. Worth the extra step and time IMO.
Can you please elaborate on what the leveling solution is? And which tool you use to apply clear? Why not just fill first and sand later? Due to light reflection from the rough scratch edges? TY!
@@hraniss google leveling solution for clesr coat..its like paint leveling compound..and you sand first to take out the rough edges and the paint and clear coat can adhere better..
He’s a detailer not an auto body technician or auto body painter.
Those kind of scratches Brian can be sleepless nights if that's your new car. I've also viewed prior videos you've done on wet sanding and all are very informative.
You are a freaking genius. Your results are perfection. I can tell that you have learned your craft after years of trial and error and I admire that. God Bless!
You are the master detailer. I continue to learn from you and enjoy your videos and the work you do.
Great video Sr.I also have some scratches on my Black Rogue so now im ready to take care of them.Thank you and greetings from Miami.
WOW! You made it look soo easy! I honestly thought you wers going to have to use touch up paint. Awesome and very informative video! Keep up the great work mang!
Just ordered the RID stix from K.X.K. and I'm ready to practice on a door panel. Then on to the cars :) Thanks for the all the effort you put into this channel Brian.
Excellent video, with no mickey mouse BS tricks. I really like the science detail that the scratch will not be removed, just sanded and smooth out
Hello, after you sand off the clear coat, why you don't add/paint the clear coat to the scratch? Please advise. Thanks.
I'm glad you didn't speed up the portion of you sanding. I wanted to see every second of that.
Thank you!! We have a 2019 Ford Edge, we have a key mark on it, multiple scratches on the doors from dogs, people leaning against it.
Awesome information! Thank you! That sandpaper on the paint makes my guts turn a bit before I saw the end result though.
Your a Professor @ Detailing 👍.......students like me always look forward to your next presentations
A very good refresher on scratch techniques. I like the honest approach, sorry but it does not go away but looks better. The customer can accept or else pay much more to paint shop. Thanks for being a wise teacher.
Wow, I will try to fix my few scratches 2018 Honda SUV HR ex. Thank you ! I will take a picture before and after 😀
I have same your car :-D
Did you fix your few scratches paint ? I want to try it for my car.
Yeah baby, just what I needed. Now I can take care of my superficial scratches within the clear coat. Do it myself and feel good in the process. 😁 My car's name is Tom btw.
11 commercials for an 11 minute video. THANKS!!
Came across your channel a couple days ago... been hooked since. Such great information. Love how thorough you are and that you show it all. Keep up the great work!
Greetings from the UK. .. thank you for uploading get this. This is really really useful. Great stuff.
I have a 370Z with the Magnetic Black(G-41) finish that has been corrected and ceramic coated with Opti-Coat Pro + and yes, scratches like that are truly hideous on that kind of finish. That info about wet sanding is most helpful for those of us who don't want to go to the body shop, where every paint defect solution is a complete repaint of the entire panel.
That's impressive. Well documented and described.
Hey great video. Any different procedure for deep scratches on a plastic bumper? Thanks again!!
Great vid. I was always scared of attempting anything like that, but now who knows. Thanks as always for taking time out for these vids. Another thumbs up. Cheers
I dont think I have the products to do this work but I do appreciate the videos and the content.
Just absolute brilliance man👍🏼👍🏼. The way you provide explanations puts the icing on the cake. Always enjoy watching and learning from you👍🏼...cheers.
That's cool, makes sense now that you have explained it. I was thinking you would be able to see it easy but it just wouldn't be as aggressive as it was.
Beautiful work! That’s amazing how little you can see it afterwards!
Impressive work! I will get a panel. Maybe it is What to do in the wintertime when it is dark, snowy and cold. Use my fathers warm garage and learn some new stuff :)
You are such a good teacher!
Excellent video very easy to follow and very well explained well done mate!!
Really helpful and informative, too. Really appreciate the detail of how it's smoothing out the edges - knowing exactly what is happening is great!
How do you decide when its better to wet sand or just grab some wool with heavy cut compound?
The Magician strikes again!
GREAT WORK AS ALWAYS BRIAN 👍🤓👍
Some ppl don’t treat a finish as it only has 1 clear coat
Always good info.. I've been practicing wet sanding. I'm getting better cause of ur videos and help.
Wow, absolutely amazing job you’ve done there. Very well done. 👍🖖
wow steve carrel giving advice on fixing scratches on a car, fair play to the guy. thanks steve.
I got a late view of this video, but an absolutely incredible job on this Brian. To make as deep a scratch nearly unnoticeable is an art.
Thank you. It looks easy, and scary at the same time.
Nice job I did an old truck learned how from you in one of your older videos. I was scared to death the first time but not after watching your video and trying it. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Excellent job I call that softening up the scratch. That works really good on the door something like that not to go out on the hood or on a faring or a gas tank of a motorcycle. I don’t know if you do it but I’ve already use the soft clearcoat touched up a scratch blocked it and buffed. It works sometimes , what are your thoughts on that have you ever done that? Good job thank you enjoy your videos.
Love the video. Came across during a search after scratching my drivers door while washing the my 2020 cx9 suspect w a dirty sponge, smh 🤦♂️. I have that 3 stage paint soul crystal red metallic, which is beautiful but seems to scratch easily. Tried Meguires scratch X2, but it hasn’t fully helped. I suspect I have to this to my car then?? I don’t want to pay a fortune for 3 scratches at a body shop.
Hi There Bryan !
I’d Tell You That “VERY HARD” is Find a Professional Detailer As Good As Yourself !
Many Thanks For Sharing This Master Class !
I’ve Already Shared It With My “Weekend Warriors” Fellow Mates !
Best Regards 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Great results , can't believe how much you were able to hide
superb Brian it makes you confident in doing your own and customers cars
At first glance I thought any correction of that scratch was hopeless after you were done and have to lay on the floor and get it it just the right angle with the shop light that's unbelievable the amount of improvement with the wet sanding and a one-step Polishing Compound
Great video, thanks. Are these plastic panels?
It came out fantastic and a lot quicker and safer than trying to buff it out I bet. Could you then even use some glaze (or other filler) in that to make it disappear completely?
Absolutely!
I've got a bunch of scratches on a car I bought used last year. I'm by no means a body/paint guy, but I was thinking of trying to carefully fill the deep scratches with some clear, sand, and polish (have a new griots g9 on the way!). That way I don't have to risk going all the way through my clear coat. But maybe I'll just try this. Looks easy and basically idiot proof. Thanks!
Just one ? What is the reason when polishing for moving at the slow speed. Thanks Jim
A little and knoll age goes a long way. Great video.😎😎😎😎🔔🔔🔔
Very nice professional job. You explained it clearly what you were doing. 👍👍👍
Can you just fill the scratch with clear coat the sand and polish?
Hello Bryan that was awesome!! Can I ask you what speed were you using on the polisher. Thank for making us better detailers
Always good to get the Pros viewpoint. Better than WD 40 channels.
Hey Brian can you make a video on how to approach and remove high spots from a ceramic coating?
That would be an awesome video!
Will do.👍
AWESOME !!! Didn't you do a video some time ago showing this? As always GREAT video so informative and showing us it is not that difficult to do. Oh I found it funny that youtube put in a F11 add :) Thank you Brian.
I have some old wet sanding videos...time to revisit them and keep the series going.
Why don't you prefill the scratch with clear coat. Then shave of the excess only (with for example Mirka shark blade or Mirka mini file), then polish it? Or do you use this method only because you have a time limit? Would you do differently if it was your car and you had plenty of time?
Thanks Brian. I have a scratch running along my passenger side about that severe in places. Looks like this is the way to tackle it.
This video is at another level. Thanks!
Great video for scratches griots does make a 3 inch pad for hand buffing but works great for sanding
Brilliant stuff. Mine is half as bad so I’m confident it can be sorted.👍
Hey Brian I have a Chevy Express van and the roof keeps getting oxadation I used compound but it doesn't come out good and it comes back thinking on wet sanding please list all the products you recommend trying,or what you would do thanks
Exactly what I was looking for!!! I'm so stoked about this video. I have similar scratches on my black soft thin clearcoat '07 Acura MDX. Thank you Brian!
Great work B. Love the flat cap. Super stylish. 💪
Please protect those knees. ❤️
Keeps my bald head warm!🙂
No joke on the thin & soft Nissan / Infiniti clear. My wife has a 2014 Q60 with clear coat damage just from the FL sun. Going to give Optima CCR a try. Saw it in one of your older videos. When I wet the part (a pillar trim piece) it looks ok but dries back to a white haze., so I hope I can save it. Also the aluminum hood has lots of paint chips, same as my older 350Z. I swear Nissan uses the thinnest paint possible 👎🏼
Very impressive Apex! Thanks for the video! Cheers, Doug
Very good video sir.
I was wondering if it is possible to remove the scratch completely by adding spray clear coat after second sanding? Then resanding it with 3000, compound, then polish?
This is a great video - thank you! I purchased a used truck recently that had Bushwacker fender flares. These flares are notorious for scratching clear coat because sand and dirt get between the paint and the rubber seal of the flare and road vibrations cause a sandpaper-type effect. Is this something that can be fixed with the process in this video? Happy to PM pics if necessary. Thanks!
GREAT VIDEO. I tried this to get a scratch out. I think I was too timid and worried about damaging clear coat. I didnt sand nearly as long as you did. The scratch is still pretty obvious. Should I try again???
My 2005 f350 has a couple of deep scratches. I bought a color matched paint pen from the dealership. What steps would I have to do? Sand (3k paper wet) the scratched line 1st then paint, sand, then wait 24 hours, sand, apply clear coat, wait 24 hours, sand, polish then protect? Let me know if I have it correct.
As always, great informative video content! I always learn a lot by watching Brian.
That process is correct.👍
Nice work. Could you use brush with clear coat and then using sandpaper make it even and follow up with a polish? We wouldn't have to remove too much clear coat and the groove would filled up so it wouldn't reflect the light. Can you comment. I am still learning
Very helpful video. This just happened to my truck 2 days ago. Except in my case, it's the entire passenger side of my Nissan truck. Paint transfer and deep scratching. I bought the truck almost new and did heavy correction and touch up repairs already, so I fear the clear is too thin. I'm taking it to be looked at, but I expect to have to repaint it.
Well, if you’re already mentally prepared to accept a full repaint. Then you’ve got nothing to lose by trying to wet sand first. If it works, you saved a bunch of money.
Evening Brian. Could I have approached this scratch using the KOVAX cube and their dry sanding precut 3000 system? I saw a video where no water was used: the dry sanding method. Your thoughts?👀
Great tutorial. This is pure craftsmanship. Very informative and easy to follow.
Your work is awesome and your videos are confidence inspiring.
great vid, my problem with the DA is too fold, how much pressure to use and how long to hold it over the area, i.e. moving speed
Brian great content ,always learning something . Really appreciate your attention to detail.
Wondering what did you charge your customer for the scratch removal Thanks
Only addition I would make can you please tell us what speed you are running the buffer?
Hey Brian, great video. Would you be able to elaborate why it wouldn’t be possible to eliminate the scratch altogether? Is it because it went into the basecoat? Would we be able to add clear coat to improve results further?
The aim is to make it less visible, that is the art.
Glad you didn't have to "mow" it down 👍👍
TAC System USA 🇺🇸 ordered my moonlight and I love my Shinee Wax ✊I need a TAC Systems Banner or decals to represent the Brand 💎
@@bigd9848 email me your address mason@tacsystemusa.com
Is it ok to use say a hand drill with a 2” sanding disk with a soft backing or do you prefer to hand wax? Thanks in advance!
Any DIY suggestions for a deeper scratch down past the base coat, down to the metal?
Brian, thanks for sharing; love me some trizact… can even use TW compound by hand after some 3K trizact on little areas.... great stuff!
Thank you Brian I shall try this on my 05 Silver Acura RL👌
Outstanding work Brian 👍👍👍
Talk about timing. Some one scraped the front bumper cover on my daughters Mazda. I was able to get most of it out. However one area is so deep I can see the black . I guess my only option is to fill it with maybe light filler then paint over it with a small brush. Problem is that the dealers only sells the paint pen. May have to have a body shop maybe make me a small mix. Your thoughts?
