    After Ian Curtis died the rest of the band continued as New Order and remained a highly influential band throughout the 80's. With the release of Blue Monday they in effect established a new genre of music.

    This song is all about Ian Curtis's lyrics, which are autobiographical. The stark music reflects his emotional turmoil perfectly. Epiliepsy, depression, marriage break-up, impending suicide. When you know the backstory it gets an easy S.

    Without context, and with 40+yrs of time gone by, the song can't be a stand alone A+ or S. But if you were in high school back then and paying attention, Ian Curtis' story and the whole Closer album changed you. Yes, life can be that dark, it wasn't a pose like it was in punk, and yeah he really did that..

      I dont remember hearing this song on the radio back then. We had good music to take in, but it was so different for 1980, im guessing this song really changed everything... because so many bands took thier influence big time. Check out "Transmission", "She's Lost Control" and "Dead Souls" next to hear the rawer, rocking side of the band. "Love Will Tear Us Apart" was close to the last song they recorded, as they continued to evolve into a more New Order-style soundscape (New Order is the band JD would reform as, after singer/lyricist Ian Curtis committed suicide). By the time it made it onto the radio, Ian was gone. For a taste of their dark eligiac sound, check out "Atmosphere" and "Heart and Soul". A different kind of sauce.

    I would definitely recommend that you take a listen to a little more Joy Division. In their short time as a band they made a pretty quick transition from more stripped down punk influenced stuff to huge atmospheric recordings, but somehow it all fits together well if you listen to it from start to finish.
    "Love Will Tear Us Apart" is clearly their catchiest hit single kind of song that straddles these sounds, but stuff like "Digital," "She's Lost Control," and "Atmosphere" would really help you flesh out what they were as a band.

      We used to play Joy Division's 'Love will tear us apart', in pubs and absolutely NOBODY got it.....it was hilarious to see everyone get up, go to the restroom, to the bar for a beer (the bar loved that aspect of our sonic torture!), outside for a smoko - whatever - anything to take their minds off of what is essentially a huge 'crowd-killer' in a pub live-music environment. While fun for the band to play, settling into that mesmerizing groove, with those changes - it was a hoot, but pure torture for the crowd. We'd later play 'warsaw', and that would definitely wake em up in a good way.

    This is a song about a disintegrating marriage, so it's odd that you would associate it with teenage years. This band has an interesting and tragic story, with a surprising second act (New Order). Their story is told in not one but two great movies, "24 Hour Party People" starring Steve Coogan and directed by Michael Winterbottom, and Anton Corbijn's "Control," based on Ian Curtis's widow's memoir. Winterbottom is one of the great underrated directors of his generation. Corbijn made many of the most well-known black-and-white photographs of the group, and his movie is accordingly beautifully shot.

  • @burmajones803
    @burmajones803 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Love this. Here's what bassist Peter Hook said about his playing in general: "I never really did play bass because I always found it intensely annoying whenever some twat of a guitarist would turn around to you and say 'could you play the root note?' No, I can't play the fucking root note. Piss off. ...It perpetuates the myth that bass players are supposed to do what they're told, and I'm not very good at doing what I'm told." This song was built around his bass line, and the bass became much much more important to rock music during the new wave/post-punk era than it had ever been before in rock music. The bass started to be used much more prominently as a melodic instrument, not just as a timekeeper.

    This is definitely the most "radio-friendly" Joy Division song, and as a JD fan for close to 30 years, I do love it. However, it's also not even one of their *best* songs, to me, and I *still* would give it at least an A+. It helped to create a form of thoughtful, moody, synth-dance-rock that still resonates today. New Order came directly out of Joy Division, after Ian Curtis' death, and these two bands influenced so, so many others!

A wide range of musical expression for every mood during that time.

  • @laurentco
    @laurentco 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    This period in music was full of brooding young English bands, and Joy Division was certainly one of those. Indeed, this song came out a month after the lead singer committed suicide due to relationship problems and ongoing epilepsy treatment that rendered him impotent. I'm surprised you didn't seize on the lyric that opens the song. "
    When routine bites hard
    And ambitions are low
    And resentment rides high
    But emotions won't grow
    And we're changing our ways
    Taking different roads
    Then, love, love will tear us apart again
    Love, love will tear us apart again
    Another fascinating thing in that song that was also characteristic of the music of New Order formed from the remains of Joy Division is the bass line. The bass player Peter Hook says that they couldn't afford proper bass amplifiers in the band's earlier days. As a result, you could not hear the bass at all if he played in the lower register of the bass, so he started playing in the very upper register of the bass just so he could be heard and then kept the style.

    As others have pointed out, for Joy Division,"Love Will Tear Us Apart" is a pop song. You have to dig deeper to get a better understanding of how influential they were. Here's a cool, 6-course musical meal to get a fuller taste: start with the single "Transmission", then album side 2 of Unknown Pleasures, followed by album side 2 of Closer, ending with another single "Atmosphere". For dessert, add two early New Order songs: "Ceremony" (actually a Joy Division song, but never officially recorded) and end with "Dreams Never End", a beautiful final "goodbye" to Ian that launches New Order's first album, Movement.

      That's pretty hilarious, "Love Will Tear Us Apart" is not a "pop" song lol. Obviously you weren't alive (or paying attention) back in 1980, or maybe you were living in an alternative reality, lol Sorry Alan, Ian croaking out the lyrics, sounding like he's singing from underneath a staircase, and just barely managing to warble the chorus melody in pitch: that was not commercial pop for 1980

    • @alan73795
      @alan73795 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TTM9691 You have to read ALL the words because context is important. I wrote "As others have pointed out, FOR JOY DIVISION, 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' is a pop song". Those words mean that compared to other bands, "LWTUA" was the equivalent of a pop song, not because it was commercial pop, but because compared to their other songs, it was more accesible and got far more play on the radio. I immediately followed that up with a detailed and knowledgeable recommendation of how to dig deeper into their catalogue. You should try it.

    A hugely influential band, and one that is almost more of “a musicians’ musician” kinda’ sound as they never quite got “mainstream” , and had a huge tragedy before fully taking off … they practically invented what would later be known as the ‘post punk’ sound, which bands like the Cure, Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails, The Killers, The Faint and a bunch more would be influenced by … it has such huge ripples that you can still hear in the music for Billie Eillish for example.

    You want atmosphere, hit 'Shadowplay' from their first album - another great is 'She's Lost Control' 'Atmosphere' is also great. What you have to appreciate is like the Sex Pistols' Anarchy in the UK' did for punk - Joy Division did for post-punk & the 2nd British invasion of 80's synth bands - they are one of those 'favorite bands of my favorite bands' - incredibly influential given only the two albums. You should really watch the film about them, 'Control' is really great and helps to understand how they were formed and why Ian Curtis took his life - it's a truly tragic story, and the world lost so much brilliant music when he died. Another really great film, '24hr Party People' that deals with the Manchester (music) scene that grew out of a single, sparsely attended Sex Pistols show in Manchester in 1976 - under 50 people were there, but one formed a record label, Factory Records, and three extremely important bands formed from it; The Buzzcocks, Joy Division and The Smiths.
