Oh, you are on the *good* stuff tonight. Lex is having the same dissonance as most listening - boppy music with anguished lyrics. Lead singer Ian Curtis died of suicide at just 23 - the "taste in my mouth" is a common symptom of oncoming epileptic fits, which he suffered terribly from. That, plus a mess of a love life (the subject of this song), plus pressures of sudden fame and general ongoing depression...

RIP Ian Curtis. The rest of the band went on to form New Order. Just want to mention, because I haven't seen it in the other comments, this was written as an answer song to Captain & Tennille's hit song "Love Will Keep Us Together."

Absolutely, they would have been huge for sure. I don't want to even pretend to know what all could have been in Ian's head, but I'd imagine he would have been proud of that success, while also being equally terrified of it.

Love Will Tear us Apart, is one of the greatest songs ever written, the melodic bassline, the use of synths and Ian Curtis's tormented admissions about the failings of his own marriage. Written as almost a direct response to the the Captain and Tennille's "Love will keep us together, Ian Curtis was suffering from Epilepsy and was on POWERFUL seizure medications and was going through a divorce due to his affair with Belgium fan, Annik Honore, he was known for leaving alot of his soul in his lyrics and really delving into the pain and trauma he was feeling both from his condition and his own wants and desires (he was married at 19 and had a kid by 20) and was torn between his two lives, as a Rockstar and as a father/husband. This track wouldn't be released as a single until 2 months after his tragic suicide and really tells a bleak final message, a glimpse into his fragile mind and heart, its a wonderful song and a true gift to the world. Joy Division is one of the most important bands of all time and we lost them far FAR to soon.

Joy Division was a little opposite of their name. Dark and a little depressive. Ian Curtis had a lot of epileptic seizures. He worked at a help line and watched a young girl having a seizure. Wrote the song She Lost Control. Pills and drinks didn't help his health. He left his wife and little daughter to be with belgian photographer Annik Honoré. Later he hung himself in his wife's kitchen and she came home and found him. Age 23. The rest of the band couldn't continue as Joy Division and started New Order with guitarist Bernard Sumner as vocalist. You should watch the movie Control made by photographer Anton Corbijn

@@iDEATH to make matters even more controversial for the band was the choice of 2nd name as New Order was a phrase also used by the German Nazi party to describe the 3rd Reich's vision of a European New Order under their rule. But it was just a coincidence as the name was chosen by Rob Gretton named after the Cambodian peoples uprising against the dictator Pol Pot he thought it would symbolise a new era for the band.

My daughter was mad at me for taking the dog in bc she knew that she would get attached to her and we would have to let her go. We had her for a month and it was sad when we took her back. Same thing with falling in love with someone and realizing it’s not working out bc you still love that person but might not like them anymore for whatever reason. He was stuck in a loveless marriage but couldn’t leave his family for the woman he loved and not to mention he had epilepsy and the pills he took for it.. he didn’t like the way they made him feel. Not to mention having fits on stage. He was self conscious of it. He hung himself in his home in England after his wife went out for the day. She came home and found him hanging. He’s a true poet. Joy division only released 3 albums in the previous 70s before he killed himself and truly this band has revolutionized music and influenced some of the best bands to come. The band later became New Order using old samples of Ian’s voice for some songs but it was never the same without him.

Whether or not you know it; "I wouldn't want to feel like he sounds" is actually the perfect description of Joy Division's entire sound. For another "So sad it's beautiful" love song (albeit definitely not New Wave) try "Love Hurts" either done by Gram Parsons & Emmylou Harris from the 70's or the hit cover version by Nazareth also from the 70's. Ian Curtis’s story is a particularly hard and unhappy one. He suffered from a very severe form of epilepsy that proved hard to control with medication. That contributed to bouts of depression. Towards the end he couldn’t even hold his newborn daughter the risk of having a seizure was so constant. Incredibly talented man, and band.

Post punk, new wave! Joy Division was a great band. RIP Ian Curtis. Lex is right on melancholy lol. Moods. Brad is kinda confused. He'll get it soon! New wave has multiple sub genres and moods. Closely related to each other.

A pairing I recommend is Joy Division’s “New Dawn Fades” & Moby’s cover of the song.
“Transmission” is one of my favorite songs by Joy Division, but I understand they can be kind of underwhelming-I often recommend to people first getting into them, the film 24 hour party people (the first half of the film mostly follows Joy Division and their involvement in the fledgling label the film centers around.)

"New Dawn Fades" is my second-favorite JD, after "Decades."
"24 Hour Party People" is a masterpiece film. My introduction to Steve Coogan.

Joy Division are my favourite band. The juxtaposition between the happy upbeat music and the dark lyrics is what makes their music so so beautiful.
Dead Souls is much more powerful and moving song you should do that.

Yeah but even at that, most of joy division isn’t even very upbeat musically, there definitely are a handful that are pretty upbeat but a lot of them are very grimy and low quality with the whole like, rundown storage unit recording feel

Joy Division was one of the most influential post punk - new wave bands. Just when they were rising and before a US tour their lead singer committed sooicide.
The band regrouped, renamed themselves New Order and changed direction becoming one of the most influential proto house - proto techno bands.

This is the same group (minus Ian) that went on to do happy music like Blue Monday. I nominate Shadowplay and New Dawn Fades. Very dark songs but they spoke to a lot of misfit kids in our generation.

one of a few different bands whose lead singers took their own lives. See also BAD FINGER. great music. see the IAN CURTIS live performances and the movie made about him. Tragic and left us with some great music while spending time here. Keanu Reeves named this tune to pack for his music to take to a desert island. Look into Bad Finger. You'll be 70s lovin' it.

Literally my favourite band. And my introduction to Joy Division. A desperate and also beautiful song, I don't think anyone has put into words a dying love in such bleak and brilliant words.
The accompanying music is so catchy and driving in almost total contrast to the vocal delivery and lyrics. A masterpiece and like Hendrixs version of All Along the Watchtower a song I can hear at any moment and its always perfect.
