    Hi Nigel. Here in my city there's this one Ficus Elastica. At least is the only one I ever saw around here. It's a magnificent specimen, I would say of at least 20 meters tall. It's nice to see you are triying to make some of those into bonsai. They have a massive leaf though.
    Anyways, I may be rambling a little. I haven't commented in a while but I just wanted you to know that your videos are always a pleasure to watch and almost every time I learn something new from them. Thank you so much. Stay amazing.

    Nice to see an update on Julian’s tree. ~ Rubber tree roots are notorious for damaging pavement, sewage systems, pipes, etc., when grown in the ground outside. Your original tree’s roots show how aggressive they can be. I would think Ficus elastica would need annual repotting / root pruning to keep the roots contained and sorted in a bonsai pot. ~ Maybe when you have the greenhouse up and running you’ll have the luxury of growing a Bougainvillea as an ornamental flowering shrub , not a bonsai, so you can have the glorious floral display without impacting the structural management of your bonsai. ~ I’m curious if making a video while you work on your trees tends to be distracting, or does it possibly sharpen your focus on the task at hand?

    I am so excited for the spring this year. Here in Norway the sun is still quite low, and even indoor trees are still mostly dormant. But one of my indoor tropicals has made new leaves just now! I am awaiting the explotion in my apartement with great anticipation of the most beautiful time of year=D

The Ficus elastica in the square pot if very attractive. Like how the plants are growing in varying heights. Makes for a nice composition. Was that GInger making those mews? • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, we have two cats, they aren't allowed in the plant room. They tend to knock trees down and they rip the plastic on the windows. I have a lock on the door that keeps them out and they know if they come in, I get out the spray bottle!

    Hello Nigel,
    I really like your youtube channel and your videos.
    i have one question, can You tell me what is the temperature in your plant room? I have several tropical plants (money tree, scheflera) and keep them in the winter time at room temperature (20-22C) .. would it be better if they are in the room with a temperature of 10-15c during the winter time? (because I guess the plants need a dormant period during the winter)?
    Thank you

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I like to match the room temperature with the amount of light the trees are getting. This happens naturally in a sunny window and in my plant room. When the sun is shining, the room gets very warm, 35 to 40 C. In a cloudy day it drops down to normal, 18 to 20 C. At night time and when it is really cold outside, the temperature naturally drops down to as low as 14 C. I generally keep the temperature cool for the first part of winter and then in February I try and keep it warmer as the days get longer and the sun brighter.

  • @lukasmihara
    @lukasmihara 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Maybe as a compromise you could make some cuttings from your flowering bonsai and let them grow rather normally instead of as a bonsai. You could then let those flower to give your garden some color and continue to prune away the flowers on your bonsai versions of the trees. This way you could have both bonsai and flowers, too.

    I have another question. I do not like to use wire on my trees. So when creating a Cascade style tree. Or an Old Pine. How do you get the branches to Cascade downward? Branches love to grow up. Or to the side. But how do you get a natural cascading branch without wire? Do you keep pruning until you get a bud that faces downward?

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can get the branch to grow downwards by letting the bottom buds develop and removing the others, but this only works to a certain degree. This usually lets you maintain a horizontal branch from growing upward. The best way is to use tension wires that pull the branch down from the base of the branch. What you don't want is to pull the branch down near the tip, this will put an arc into the branch structure and can make the branch look very artificial. Some trees in nature do have arching branches, but generally not Pines. It is usually fruit and nut trees that have arched branches due to the weight of the fruit or nuts at the tips!
      For developing a cascade tree using clip and grow, you can tip the pot on it's side or have it almost upside down to get the branches to grow in the right direction.
      Using Guy wires or Tension wires allows you to slowly pull the branch down over time. This lessons the risk of losing the branch due to breakage or over bending, causing damage to the cambium layer.
      Wiring the branches into position with a traditional copper or aluminum wire is also an option. You just have to protect the branch because as the branch grows, it will start to grow around the wire and will leave spiral wire marks. These usually grow out in time, but not always. Unfortunately the bonsai world now seems to accept wire marks and wire as normal on show trees. I don't hate a tree for having wire marks, but it is just another element that spoils the illusion and magic of bonsai. It just reminds me that someone shaped the branch with wire.
