If you're in east TN, pretty much the only places that DON'T look sketch are big chains like Chili's. I thought that catfish sandwich looked baller, and I could damn sure handle the heat. The breakfast joint looked all right, but that white gravy is what some folks call sawmill gravy. It's not sausage gravy, which is usually gonna be a bit darker. It's basically a bechamel with maybe a little bacon grease. It adds moisture and substance, but it's nothing to write home about. It's meant to accompany something that's already very savory, like a chicken-fried steak.
Yeah I thought the breakfast and lunch place looked pretty good and they were not liking it but I’m pretty used to that kind of food also living around the Virginia Tennessee border

I dine out quite often and find the run down places often have the best most authentic food most most of the time. All my favourite spots are what they would call sketchy and id recommend coming to Toronto Canada one day, endless options here.
Chez Nous in Timmins ON, though their Quebec style Poutine is up there...

These “sketchy” restaurants are usually the best places to eat! We go to a diner where the owners “office” is in the middle of the restaurant lol
I find that many of these sketchy looking mom and pop restaurants usually have the best tasting food. Everywhere else near me is either some crappy chain restaurant or some bougie pretentious hoity-toity cafe/bistro type places owned by the hipster/yuppie types that charges $40 just for a burger. If you're worried about the food safety here's a little tip; if the bathrooms are disgusting, the kitchen most likely is too.
Pink meat is fine if you ground your own beef (which they probably do) if you buy ground beef from a store you should cook it al the way

I kinda like how they put the condiments on the side. I hate when I get take out and when I get home my lettuce and everything is soggy from the heat
In Australia, a lot of us say the word "dodgy" which has the same meaning as sketchy. Love the videos.

I used to have a sketchy restaurant that closed down and turned into a dispensary. I have another sketchy place and the food was very underwhelming. There was a lot of elderly people there as well. The elderly must have no tastebuds after they get 50 yrs old. The place was old from what I saw. It’s called Uncle Sams in Bristol Connecticut. There are a few others that were sketchy but the food always ends up being ok or underwhelming.

Being from tn and now live in California, prices are hella cheaper back home in tn, but the pay is lower

I was just in Bristol last week. That's where all us small town folk go. 🤣 Btw you're supposed to break up the biscuits and pour the gravy over, then add your own salt to taste. 🤣 Those "old people" diners have great hamburgers, usually..js 🤣

Definitely try Columbus, Ohio... We have a huge variety of restaurants, and a lot of sketchy restaurants too lol. The ones that I have tried have been on point, but i need to try more 😭. The most interesting thing to me is the different cultures within culinary, and how they present themselves within their cooking and community. That's why Columbus is so special... Because of the variety!

Food still needs to be able to stand alone and be good, to be considered good. Sauce or gravy should not be a binder, but an addition.

You need to come over here in Montréal, Québec, Canada and try REAL Poutine, Real Schwartz Smoked Meat, Real Beaver Tails, Tourtière, Pâté Chinois and Real Cretons ;) And I would recommend comming in February when there is 1 meter of snow all around and live thrue a real snow storm. If you do, then you can unlock the Cabane a sucre. Take some notes i'm a real Quebecer hahaa!! A++ brother

Where I live, sketchy restaurants are the best places. There's a place called pizza shack and they have a buffet (don't ask me why) and it's pretty good, their pizza is actually good too

I’m in nashville and been watching you for a few years and it’s so funny to see you now in the areas touring around places 😊❤you should try Wendell smiths meat and 3 on Charlotte Pk nashville and couva calypso cafe the bean salad is a mountain salad with what’s called bbq sauce but it’s not really it’s good on the bean salad it’s a spicy citric sauce

Please rename this series to “does the book match the cover”. At least something along those lines. These places aren’t sketchy and the people are super nice. Or just say sketchy looking restaurants. I don’t care wether they’re sketchy, I just want to see food from quirky places you wouldn’t necessarily gravitate towards to.

Y’all should try Marcy Jo’s in Pottsville right outside Columbia off Bear Creek Pike. The building looks sketchy but the food is fire. A country start and his sister owned it then he sold it to his sister I believe. Stuffed French toast and biscuits and gravy are my fave there! Amish cinnamon rolls are off the chain too.
Y’all need to review Stellians in central city ky they have a 8lb pizza and big milkshakes it’s about 1 hour n 45 minutes from Nashville! Cabin pizza in grand rivers ky is also amazing lots of sight seeing around there good place for summer lake days❤️

You need to come to Chattanooga for a few days, and try the best rated restaurants as well as do a local recommendation! It's fire here, it's a very progressive city in TN only 2 hours away and is a culinary, beer, tech, music and arts style city.

When you love Mac and cheese, order mac and cheese, get wrung up for Mac and cheese 6:49 but get served green beans 10:37 instead yet have no idea 😂
When I was 15 Im now 44 I worked at a sketchy restaurant. It was a restaurant/gas station. I was a bus boy(bus girl) and dishwasher. It was a very small place. We had a full menu and the cooks was great. The food was 85% Homemade. We had all you can eat BBQ ribs or catfish on friday nights. Sunday was all you can eat Homemade chicken and dumplings. Looking back it did look pretty sketchy but I loved working there and I loved the food.
The 1st diner didn't look too bad. Some pepper/salt would've made the gravy better. Diners pretty much died here, other than a couple corporate chains like Denny's. There used to be a couple amazing spots downtown, but they closed years ago.
I've definitely found more sketchy spots are better than they look. There's a Korean chicken place here that's in the ugliest dirty white building in that area, but the food is amazing. Great Szechuan spot in an ugly old building right near the cop shop. Used to be a great donair shop in Esquimalt, The Donair Shop, that originated in Halifax then they moved here, that was in a rathole. Looked like they took over an old Mr. Sub franchise from the 80's. Used to eat there all the time when I was stationed in Halifax. Was amazed they were in Esquimalt when I moved out here.

Gotta break the Biscuits up in small pieces and pour the gravy over. If you want it to hit even better, put some hot sauce on it! Want to send it over the top, get fancy, and bring some Truff hot sauce with you, and it will go over the top!
the sad thing is "sketchy" is considered low income area's when most of them have amazing food for cheap that people can afford
