Hi Heather! I’m a catholic mother of 5 (all c-sections too!) 9 to 1 year old. I would like to add that “being open to life” it’s just 1 reason to use NFP instead of birthcontrol, for the Catholic Church. The MAIN reason is that with birthcontrol you are “disconnecting” the two purposes of sexual intercourses, meanwhile with NFP (if there are serious reasons to avoid a pregnancy) you are always being respectful with the nature of sexual unions, the fertility cycle and therefore with life itself (not manipulating sexuality as a mere “entertainment”). In this sense you are being open to life even when conception is not possible, because you are aknowledging the dignity of human life and marital act. Love your channel, you’re a big role model!! Greetings from Argentina (and sorry my English!)
Please do more videos talking about those extra added topics that go along with NFP. Like reasons why, when it's ok, medical reasons and so on. I have 7 kids that range from 1 yr to 15 yrs. Which they are close in age. My doctor says that from 7 babies and on I fall under high risk deliveries. I don't take meds to avoid pregnancy but I really don't think I can handle more kids physically and mentally. Plus with just 1 income coming in, it becomes difficult on my husband. So much weight on his shoulders. We were going to get a permanent fix but we both felt so much contrition in our hearts that we couldn't do it. Everyone will make decisions in their lives and I'm not judging anyone that has done something permanently to not have any more kids but my husband and I both felt depressed and anxiety that we knew God didn't want that for us. So we didn't do it. That was when we just had 6 kids. Then our Lord sent us our 7th and he is so amazing and brightens up our days. Anywho, sorry I just rambled but yes please make more videos if possible. It's hard to find ppl that will encourage others to take the harder road instead of the easy way out. But yes so many questions come along with the NFP route. Blessings
The harder here in Earth.. the easier it becomes in Purgatory.. anything that is beyond our ability is to humble us.. God is still in control isn't He?
You are awesome!! Most people would not be open to practicing NFP with the health issues you have going on and it is inspiring that you take your faith and health seriously enough to "crack the code" and find what works for you and your body. I will definitely be checking into these methods in the future- I really don't know much about specific NFP practices (Marquette etc.) Thank you for sharing your story with us!
I also love how you mentioned it is a journey and something we can't necessarily plan on doing for ourselves- we never know when it may be necessary for us to practice it.
My fiancé and I are learning both Marquette and Creighton and then choosing what works for us! So glad to see this video! Perfect timing with NFP week and the anniversary of Humane Vitae yesterday!
As a Catholic 19-year old, I find this video super helpful! My boyfriend and I have been dating for three years and planning to get married when we are 21. We are very open in communicating about NFP and adhering to Humanae Vite. Even though we are not having sex, I have been using the sympto thermal method to just understand my body and my cycles (they are pretty irregular). After watching these NFP videos from the mom's book club, I really want to try the Marquette method when we get married. I have been told by so many people that there is no use in trying NFP and that it does not help at all for family planning so these videos are such a breath of fresh air! THANK YOU SO MUCH! :)
I think in your recent video, you said that you felt that your body really needed a break, and that's God telling you that yes, you need to take a step back. Thanks for sharing.
Marquette is great! It increased our infertile window by 3-4 days and it was a huge help during postpartum. I highly recommend getting an instructor. There’s certainly a learning curve 😅
One of the things that I see a lot of couples don't know is that sperm can live inside a woman's body for up to 5 days. So if a couple has intercourse on Monday and she ovulates on that Friday she can still get pregnant. Also, the egg only lives for 12-24 hours, usually a lot less, so on the other hand, if a woman is having difficulty having children than it's much better for the couple to have intercourse on her most fertile days. A great resource is Prof Janet E. Smith's talk on NFP. called Cracking the Myths Contraception Why Not? where she speaks of everything we need to know about how our bodies work and why the Catholic church is against contraception. It is published by the Augustine Institute. Our church orders them from the CD Of The Month Club, Lighthouse Talks Augustine Institute.
lulu lue learning about your body’s rhythm is what will help you to understand when and when not to have sex for you and your body. So that is why learning about cycles and the lifecycles of sperm and eggs will help you to figure out your own NFP. method. First start tracking your menstrual cycle and get a few ovulation kits and follow the instructions on the box. The sticks that you pee on will actually tell you when your body releases an egg and the days that you are most fertile. Do this several times for at least three months. That will help you figure out when you ovulate and the days you should not have sex if you don’t want to get pregnant. On the other hand if you want to get pregnant it will help you to know when to have intercourse for your best chance at having a baby. Good luck.
Everyone please pray for my family. We have suffered two miscarriages in one year. We do have a six years old daughter, but are having trouble. Maybe God wants us to do something else and not have another. I'm just in limbo right now. Thanks everyone.
Awwww I sending a prayer up. You might search for bible study plans on that. My friend actually wrote one on the Youversion bible app! If you are looking for practical thoughts, have you looked into nutrition and natural stuff to help with healthy pregnancies better? You are not alone in that challenge. 💕
I love this video! I did just want to add that there does not have to be a good reason to use NFP, but there has to be a good reason to be TTA. Every woman should understand where she’s at in her cycles regardless of whether or not she’s TTC or TTA. Everyone should use NFP. I just felt the need to comment this because language does matter-there’s NEVER anything wrong with understanding your body (aka NFP). A lot of people also use NFP for TTC. It’s TTA that needs to have a grave reason.
NFP sits so well with my heart. I know not all things that are God's will will feel good, but NFP is one of those things where I wish I knew about it when I was much younger in my 20's. But that's ok, because I know now.
We are trying Marquette this time around. We have just been open to life for the first 3 years of marriage and now are trying to learn a method so Marquette seems the most user friendly. Glad to hear such positive thoughts about it.
Oh and also the ovulation sticks can be found super cheap on amazon for bulk. There are different options for the brands but they are cheaper than cvs. That with knowing your body usually is a good mix.
Thanks for the video! My husband and I are currently and have been for 7 years practicing the Creighton method. We are on our 6th child (6 months pregnant currently) and 2 of them were surprises/blessings. This will be my 4th c-section and I don't know how much more my body can take. We will always be open to God's but it's oh so hard! It's so refreshing to see other Catholic mom's with the same struggle and to know I'm not alone!
I have been using the sympto-thermal method for 8 years. I learned through their home study course. Basically I just bought the book and learned on my own. This method is taught by the Couple to Couple League. No equipment to buy. Just need a thermometer. It works!
Wow, first time I’ve learnt or heard of NFP or Mark-et method. Never knew churches view but during my own journey have felt that it’s Gods choice and to be more open to his will. I’ve stopped all artificial birth control. I will pass this to my daughter. Fantastic. Thank you
As a Creighton Method Practitioner - I appreciate your honesty as to why the method didn't work for you (not that the method itself didn't work). BTW - great hearing your voice, its been a long time! ;)
When we started learning about NFP I thought I’d never use it and we’d just have a baby every two years and it would be perfect. Five c-sections later we needed to slow things down too. Then last week we discovered my husband and I both have an autosomal recessive gene and the word “fatal” is coming up a lot (although a lot is unknown because it’s so incredibly rare... it causes ventilation issues, like our youngest has) and any future babies have a 25% chance of inheriting the gene and I’m heartbroken...because suddenly we’re seriously avoiding forever. It is a humbling journey...
Thank you for sharing! We love Marquette Method too. Also "Theology Of The Body - In One Hour" by Jason Evert is a great read too. Keep up the great work!
I'm 9 months ppd with my 3rd. I watched your video a few months back and immediately started using the clear blue kit...well recently I went from the peak day to getting my first ppd period within days which was so strange to me mathematically.
love NFP (& air b&b lol)! I will do a NFP video later (on sympto thermal & creighton) but I don't know marquette! Good to know for the future in case I'm ever in a similar situation.. glad it is working for you!
I’ve been using something called natural cycles (an app) which calculates fertility based on an algorithms written by a particle physicist! I just take my temperature every morning and it works it all out for me. Honestly, understanding my own body and how it works, why I’m feeling what I’m feeling at different times in the month is just amazing. I used to hear people say NFP was the church’s best kept secret and I totally agree. I have a 6 year old daughter and I can’t wait to share the benefits with her (obviously not yet!!).. but I wish I had understood my own fertility and cycle better even as a teenager... would have been so much better prepared for marriage! Thanks for making this video Heather xx
Hi. I'm glad to see someone making Catholic videos about NFP;. You say a lot of great things that help a lot of people spiritually; however, I was bothered by the fact that you used the word "grave" to describe the reasons why a couple would only be able to morally use NFP. Neither the Catechism or Humane Vitae use the word "grave" to describe the reasons why a couple would use NFP. The Catechism is very clear when it says that a couple must have a JUST and selfless reason to use NFP- not "grave" (ccc 2368). In other words, I don't want people to walk away from your video thinking that they need to have a "life or death/grave" reason to use NFP because that's not what the Church teaches- that's incorrect.
"With regard to physical, economic, psychological and social conditions, responsible parenthood is exercised by those who prudently and generously decide to have more children, and by those who, for serious reasons and with due respect to moral precepts, decide not to have additional children for either a certain or an indefinite period of time (HV 10)" The English translation of Humanae Vitae uses the word "serious". I'm not sure what the original Latin is, but if we consider that with mortal sin it can be called "serious" or "grave" interchangeably, then we should have no problem with Heather using the word "grave". Either way, the Church teaches there needs to be a serious reason and that the couple are to discern this between themselves. These serious reasons can be anything from the above - financial, physical, psychological etc. But it's wrong to use it for a non-serious reason.
+Clazza Maree "Serious reasons mean important, or non-trivial, reasons, deriving 'from the physical or psychological conditions of husband and wife, or from external conditions' (HV 16). Just reasons are, likewise, reasons which correspond to the truth of marriage and the situation of the couple" (EWTN). According to the explanation from EWTN, who is aligned with the Church's teachings, the meaning of "serious" is not synonymous with "serious sin" AKA grave/mortal sin. To commit a mortal sin is choosing death over life, and choosing to practice NFP for unjust or selfish reasons is immoral; however, the point that I'm trying to make is that "serious" reasons do not solely equal "life or death" ones. I've heard priests and certain lay people say that NFP can ONLY be used for life-threatening reasons (i.e. during time of war, famine, or persecution, eugenics, medical reasons where the pregnancy could result in death), and that's not correct.
+Clazza Maree (Con't) Of course the life threatening reasons that I mentioned are legitimate for using NFP, but not everybody is in a situation like that. The Church doesn't list specific situations in which a couple can only use NFP because it's a unique and personal decision that needs to be made between the couple and God. Humane Vitea and the Catechism teach and guide us to help make sure that our reasons are not motivated by selfishness AKA "birth control mentality." I hope this helps to give clarification to anybody who might've misunderstood what I was saying.
15 years ago, we suffered from infertility. The Creighton Method helped us figure out the problem: after endometriosis surgery (hat tip to Dr. Mark Stegman), we were able to conceive. Today, we have 3 healthy children.
Interesting about what you said about legally not being able to talk about the Marquette method?? That doesn’t make sense. I could understand legally not working with students unless you’re a certified instructor, but saying, “I’m not certified, but this is how it works for me,” shouldn’t have legal ramification... I mean... Would someone try to sue you if they got pregnant while following how you said to use it? Just confusing! Would be interested on where you heard that for my info too. 👍🏼
Pray the Holy Rosary. Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
If contraception defeats the purpose of the marriage act, and NFP has the same purpose as contraception, does NFP not also defeat the purpose of the marriage act?
Hello! I would love a video explaining in what circumstances NFP is okay to use. I know for medical reasons but if there are others I would like to know! thank you so much for sharing your life with us.
Hello Heather, I just found your channel yesterday and I'm binge watching already. :) we have 2 boys and both c-section. We want to have more kids but my husband is scared because of the complications I had on both after the cs. We are also using NFP and trust in God's plans.
I am so glad you are here! I love that you are trusting in God's plan! The doctor told me I had to quit after my second child, I just trusted in God and just had my 5th csection 10 months ago and this Doctor said I could have more! It is so crazy how all Doctors say different things.
Thank you for your reply Heather, I am so happy. Yes, I just saw the video where you said you had your 5th c-section and I also saw in one of the comments of a woman who had 8 c-sections without problems. I told my husband about these stories in the hope of easing a bit the trauma. I will have my yearly check up next week and I will surely ask the doctor of her opinion about having another baby.
I'm new to NFP but I've heard of Marquette a lot and overwhelmingly sounds reliable from all the reviews. However, it seems a huge part of Marquette is the Clearblue fertility monitor which you mention in the video. I've started using the monitor and think it's great. My serious question is: if I'm using the monitor, is there a point to doing the rest of the Marquette method? I realize for legal reasons, you can discuss in length but can someone else give me an idea of what the Marquette method is besides the fertility monitor? I'd like to try it.
I got my tubes tied for financial reasons after the birth of my son. I'm so glad I did especially after my son's diagnosis. I am available to dedicate my life to my son and his therapy.
landof thebrave he won't. My son is 19 years old now, and never has asked me for a younger sibling. I also have an older son so Michael has an older brother.
Rose McDonough that’s not in line with the teachings and beliefs of the Catholic Church.. if you’re catholic it’s actually mortally sinful. It related to the sin of Onan.
Lucia DeLoach I did it for health reasons as well. Not that I need to explain to you. It's issues with my heart. I joined this book summer reading program thinking I would not be judged.
Rose McDonough Reason being that we believe it should be in God’s hands and we should be open to His will rather than our own. Just letting you know, in case you’re catholic. God bless.
I appreciate how you said it's okay to say no to our bodies. Such a foreign concept in our culture 🤔 I don't have to deal with this particular subject, because my husband had a vasectomy, years before I met him 🤗 But I truly appreciate the faithful Catholics who try to do NFP.
How accurate are the clearblue testing strips (that don't go with the machine) when Breastfeeding 7 weeks post c section? I'm wasting for my fertility monitor to arrive and am wondering if I can use the testing strips for the time being.

“Taking charge of your fertility” is a great book for knowing your own body. It helped me a lot with NFP.
Let GOD take charge of your fertility and not bother with “NFP”.

agreed & I love those apps coming out! I used to use one - I think it was natural cycles.
The Bible says “to not deprive one another unless with mutual consent for a short time unless you might be tempted.”

If using CM to track fertile days please know that ewcm ≠ ovulation. Ovulation occurs 1-2 days after ewcm according to billings method website.
How could I get an instructor for the Marquette method? Loved your video ❤️
Hi. How do I find an instructor for the Marquette Method? Thank you and God bless you!
I also have an older son so Michael has an older brother.
landof thebrave I have asked my son if he ever wanted a younger brother or sister, his replied "No Thank you "!
God bless.
Thanks
I appreciate how you said it's okay to say no to our bodies.
Such a foreign concept in our culture 🤔
I don't have to deal with this particular subject, because my husband had a vasectomy, years before I met him 🤗
But I truly appreciate the faithful Catholics who try to do NFP.
How accurate are the clearblue testing strips (that don't go with the machine) when Breastfeeding 7 weeks post c section? I'm wasting for my fertility monitor to arrive and am wondering if I can use the testing strips for the time being.
