The secret art of LEGO origami?

  • Is this origami?
    As the word origami means 'folding paper' it doesn't exactly fit.
    Perhaps we could call this 'brick folding'--one of the many lost brick bending arts.
    I honestly don't fully grok how or why this works. But when I discovered it, I knew I had something strange, confusing, and very special--and now I finally get to share it : )
    In short this build primarily consists of two simple patterns of 1x4 plates that are mirror images of each other. When you interweave them together with hinged connections they are able to tightly fold up, and then expand, all fairly easily. All the extra bits around the outside edges just help foster the illusion of squareness in its compact form. I hope you enjoy.
    How to support Brick Bending:
    - Follow me for free updates, or consider a support tier: / brickbending
    - Buy a DIY kit: wlwyb.com/shop/
    - Buy a piece of original LEGO art: www.brickbending.com/shop
    - Throw some bricks my way: www.buymeacoffee.com/brickben...
    Piece breakdown: 1x4 plates (459), 1x2 plates (61), 1x1 plates (10), 1x6 plates (2)

    You should make a building on it where the walls follow the same ripple pattern. So that when you "expand the plate" the building will get a cool exploding and imploding effect.

    I’ve been folding origami for years (even the rose in my profile pic)… If the pulling motion you just did was replicated with a sheet of paper, it would most likely rip. The key to most origami models is actually starting with more surface area than you need and then compressing it using precise folds. Whereas here, your legos are able to expand without breaking due to individual pieces spreading the tension evenly. It’s an incredible feature of these lego designs that I feel like many people are overlooking. I really enjoy your work! :)

    • @Burger_pants
      @Burger_pants 2 ปีที่แล้ว +216

      It reminds me of those popscicle stick bombs kids would make in school, the tension of the wood kept them together without glue or anything but you had to make precise layers and shapes to get each stick to hold pressure the right way so it all held together.
      I love this channel because it's like a new art form, it's unlike origami, paper-craft, matchstick/popsicle stick sculptures etc etc.

    Anytime I see a new method and structure I'm like "but how is it going to bend?" even though I know 100% it will, it's magic.
    Also don't know about the origami simil.

    That’s really awesome 👍 but i dont think it classifies as “paper folding” more like “rego oritatami” or “lego folding” but then again its not folding so… it would be “regostoretchi” or “lego stretching”

    I know it sounds silly to begin with, but thank you for helping me partially overcome my fear of origami!!!
    …I say “partially” because I still have yet to overcome the paperization that coexists with the actual origami that made the fear in the first place!

    • @mikuenjoyerXD
      @mikuenjoyerXD ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't understand how someone could be afraid of origami? Is it uncanny that a piece of paper can become some complex just by manipulating it by folding it? because then i would kind of understand. I feel more like I'm in awe of origami though (i just like to make simple ninja stars)

    • @Thomas_Morse
      @Thomas_Morse ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mikuenjoyerXD let’s just say that a certain game helped create the fear in the first place… becoming a mere decoration wasn’t fun, let me tell you.

    Sometimes I wonder if you are afraid to make your videos too long. Don’t be. I think a lot of us would appreciate a loooong video where you explain exactly how you think to get to this result. (Which is awesome, by the way.) We always sit in gaping amazement at what you do, and understand nothing. Like this particular build, for instance. I marvel at it, but I don’t understand the thought process behind it. I’ve been following you since you had a handful of subscribers, it’s time you explain. We’re fans, we’ve got rights 🙄

    My first thought was to make it a Lego trap and add little spikes on it so you can expand the trap and it’ll be more painful.
