I think this my favorite of these kinds of spheres-it’s just an epic and amazing build that looks different from so many perspectives. And I could watch it spin forever.
You could also call this a LEGO d30, or my best attempt at a LEGO dyson sphere. : )

My favorite part of every video is watching you build a section of something, then sliding 10 more identical sections that were already completed into view.
"And once you've done that complex step-by-step thing once you can just reach into the shadow realm and make 16 more appear out of fucking thin air! Works every time!"
Once he's built one he learns the crafting recipe.. and therefore auto crafts them...

so i've done some off camera building-
I kept telling myself "I feel like I'm witnessing some kind of forbidden LEGO building technique" after I saw the model start to take on a curvature. Once it was finished, I half-expected it to shudder, hover a foot off of the table, and start humming and rotating on all axes with ever-increasing speed while glowing ever-brighter and telepathically bestowing arcane knowledge in some long-forgotten language.

i want the forbidden lego knowledge. Maybe it gives the receiver the ability to conjure legos from thin air and form them with their mind?
At the start, I wondered “how is he pushing these to their limits? And why is he making so many?” When I saw him connect the first part of the sphere, flip it over, and start to bow up, my jaw dropped
Had the same reactions. I was like "this isn't pushing any limits" and I was about to click to a new video when he flipped it and we saw the bend. Then I was like "Impressive. MOST Impressive."

It's always both incredibly fun, and soul crushingly terrifying hearing those poor brick groan in tortured agony. Like, I know this shall lead to amazing things, but damn if I don't empathize with tiny plastic bricks

My favorite part of this video is how the first thing you do is take a bunch of hinges--pieces that are actually meant to bend--and lock them into a triangle so they can't move.
Putting the little LEGO caveman next to this thing gives me a very "BE NOT AFRAID" vibe

I don't know if you can sell kits because lego is already a licensed product but I'd love to build one of the sets you do. I just don't have any of the pieces nor the know how of where to get them.
Maybe you could purchase instructions and piece counts from him. Then you could get the pieces on your own and do the build. You could even choose your own colors.

There at least used to be a site you could make your own kits and sell them. Don't remember what it was called though
This is simply stunning. I love how in the late stages, while a layer is in progress, the struts get all twisted, but once the layer is complete, all the forces balance out to form the perfect shape (including pulling the 5-way joints into perfect pentagons).
sorry to say but there are no pentagons here.
only thirty rhombus with the diagonal sizes of each in a ratio of phi.
in other words. the structure is a rhombic triacontahedron made with curved edges.
Where five struts meet at a 'vertex', the green hinged plates form pentagons. I know what I'm talking about.

You are completely correct about the geometric properties of the whole object. But you're missing the trees for the forest, so to speak, when you ignore the fact that the 'edges' aren't one-dimensional lines. Where the edges meet, there are pentagonal holes. Go to 9:34 in the video and tell me there isn't a pentagonal hole there.
The thing is, none of our beliefs need changing, because we're both right - you about the macro geometric properties of the overall object; me about the presence of small pentagons (and equilateral triangles, it must also be said) emerging as a consequence of the building method. We were looking at different aspects of the object. I just don't think you realised I was looking at the negative space.
Not generally into Lego, but this is video as a whole is an amazing piece of art. The progressive geometry, color scheme and ingenious technical design of the structure, but also the video editing, pacing and sound recording. Everything was fucking perfect, even the switch to a playful tone in the end! I was genuinely glued to the screen!
When you started multiplying the components needed for this build, it reminded me of Star Wars dreadnoughts appearing out of hyperspace... and they ended up building a Death Star. ;)

As soon as I saw the twenty triangular figures, I knew roughly where this would be going (well, I expected it would have icosahedral symmetry), and was excited to see it come together. Love the rhombic triacontahedron! Really awesome build.

@@NotMrTaco53 I did a BMath in pure mathematics, and have done a bunch of geometric sculptures built from magnets in the past, so I'm fairly familiar with the process of repetitively building faces or vertex figures and snapping them together afterward. :)
At first i thought it would become a truncated icosahedron until he made those 5-stars. Nice build, how many prototypes failed before this one?

James May, a British TV host, did a build a full size LEGO house. It was eventually torn down but it did exist for a few years.

What is cool is that you actually found a way to curve the assembly thanks to the play between the bricks and not by bending them. The construction is incredibly nice and well designed. I really feel like looking at art.

I know it's well within mechanical tolerances, and that those tolerances are in fact what makes this possible (hence lots of small pieces) but man the sounds make me shutter. Also, this thing looks like it'd have a rapid unscedualed disassembly if you even looked at it sideways, but it's pretty!
When he finishes the ball and starts slowly turning it, I think it looks really cool how the light reflecting off the Legos tap in and out

I can't believe that Lego can resist vertical tension. I think that's why this sphere is so big.
A spherical rhombic triacontahedron! What a beautiful shape!
And very clever engineering on those 5-way joins; the hinges are loose and flexible to make connections easier, but as the shape builds those hinges are pulled tight by the tension to form perfect pentagons at each intersection!

These are always so impressive to me, fantastic work. However I must ask, where did you buy your lego copy-paster? I've been wanting to get into these builds but it takes me upwards of 10+ hours for what appears to be 3 seconds of ctrl+c -> ctrl+v. An Amazon link would be much appreciated 🙏
With 3-point and 5-point vertices I was expecting a 'bucky ball' but this is _so_ much better.

Everything in this video is amazing, but to me personally the coolest part is the design of the all black connector parts. The way they are designed to be able to bend in every direction is so damn clever.
I was afraid one of those pieces would give up when that small plate fell off (don't know if it got ejected)😨. So traumatic if one of them did, exploding into the whole room.
Those little pieces are insanely tough. They can handle much more than this.

You can tell how much tension the bricks are under just by how they creak when they are barely grazed

Seeing how much stress the pieces are enduring, I feel dropping this would be a glass grenade.
Wow! Even tough it weirldy hurts to see bricks being forced, I have to admit, this is truly a masterpiece!
When I see the complex builds I always wonder: do you conceive of the final shape of the build initially and then break it down to how the individual bricks go together, or do you just start putting bricks together and see where you end up?
I never thought it would be so satisfying watching someone play with legos!
This is simultaniously better looking and more creative than 99% of modern art pieces
