Hey Terry! Thank you so much for the kind words, it really means a lot to me! I can't wait to see you pick up that last one to complete his run! Those parkhurst are beautiful together. The 3 of them display very nice. Absolutely love the detail on the Johnny Bower, those goalie pad are awesome! Interest facts about Jim Hart I didn't know much about him at until now. I love when setup the sequence in your cards like the snap, drop back and roll out. I always forget Maris played for the Indians and Maury Wills may be one of the top underrated players out there. He had such a good career, hopefully we will see him in the hall at some point. Enjoyed as always....Update on the little league season we made the championship game that was played last night and fell to the better team. Runner-up this year, but it was a blast and it was my sons first trophy so he was super pumped! Have a good weekend my friend!

      Hi Mike,
No, thank you for your kindness. Much like catchers in baseball, hockey goalies really stand out regardless of who the subject is.
Congratulations to you and your son on getting the runner-up trophy. There can only be one winner. As long as your team gave it their best and had fun, there isn't much more you can ask for as a coach, especially at their age.
I am fond of the quarterbacks I first remember when watching football as a kid. Jim Hart was well past his prime by the time I saw him, but I always liked him. It was probably my older brother's influence, who had a '71 Topps card of him.
When preparing for this video, I really came to admire Maury's work ethic. I have wanted the '63 Fleer for a while, but now I am even more excited about adding it.
      Have a great Sunday.

Thanks Mitchell. Wills certainly was talented. I was most impressed with his perseverance to get to the majors. His interview in the magazine brought light to the challenges he had at the plate and how much effort he put into becoming a good hitter. To learn to switch hit when he was 25 years old is a reflection of his talent, but also his dedication to the game.

Terry, glad you made it back safely from your trip. Nice that you got the nudge from Mike with Garvey's 86 Topps issue to finish his run. Good luck picking up the 87. I'll have to check out Mikes channel. That's great that you were able to add another P.H. with that beautiful Mahovlich. He bookends well with the Olmsted and Bower in the middle. The dark blue uniforms go well with the wide yellow hockey stick borders. Thanks so much for connecting dots on the Wills story. He may or may not ever make the HOF but sure nice he is honored by fans everywhere.

      Thanks, Dan!
Yes, Mike gave me the nudge to finish the run. He is a thoughtful person and a good family man.
I have a lot to learn about that era of hockey. I haven't ventured much outside of the HOFers because I don't know many of the non-HOFers' stories. As I learn more, I expect to grow my collection beyond the HOF players. Hockey from that era is an exciting world that I haven't deeply explored, which is one of the things I enjoy about collecting.
I'm glad you enjoyed the information on Wills. I focused on Wills' early career because I found it fascinating how he persevered for a decade in the minors to make the majors. It's not a common path for a player who became a superstar. I'm glad I was finally able to add his '63 Fleer to my collection.
      Take care, my friend.

It was awesome of Mike to think of me. Such a beautiful card. I read quite a bit about Maury Wills in preparing for this video, but I really wanted to focus on how hard that man worked and persevered to get to the majors. I was so impressed by him. It makes having the '63 Fleer card all the sweeter. I am glad you found the information on his deal with Topps interesting. Thanks, my friend. Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

Great share Terry. Scoot/Mike is a great guy. Been following him since he started his YT channel. I agree with you about Maris and Wills are usually brought up about conversations about baseball in the 60s. Love his Fleer RC card and that 1971 Topps. Crazy to think that it took that long for him to have a Topps card. Enjoyed and thanks for sharing with us. Hope your trip went well.

The colors on those Parkhurst’s are gorgeous. That blue just pops. Hockey, football, baseball, every video transports me back as well. Days gone by for sure but a time when you looked at the cards, played outside, & didn’t come inside until it was supper time.
Really enjoy the 63 Fleer Wills with the bold MVP. Awesome video Terry. Thank you the trip down memory lane each video.

      Hi Doug,
Yes, part of the joy of collecting is the ability to fondly look back on the past. All is good in the present, and the future holds promise, but the past is what made us who we are. For those of us who collected as kids, the cards take us back to those carefree days of going to the corner store and tearing through packs, searching for our favorite players and teams.
I love to acquire hockey cards from the 50s and early 60s from time to time. They are beautiful cards. Being from the Buffalo area, I opened as much hockey as I did baseball and football in my early days of collecting.
      Have a great weekend!

Terry, I love the variety of cards in your collection and the fact that every one of them has a special connection to you! Frank Mahovlich looms large in my small memory of NHL players from that time period! The players you mentioned really built a multinational image for the game of ice hockey that allowed for expansion to succeed. Congratulations on your additions and thanks for such a well-made and thought provoking video!

Thank you, Rick. I was a little surprised that Mahovlich was 4th all-time in goals when he retired. He was quite the player. Unfortunately, he wasn’t treated well during some of his time in Toronto. It had an impact on his mental health to the point where he was temporarily institutionalized.
1950s hockey is an era I have really begun to learn about over the past few years. The cards from that time are beautiful.

Mike is a great guy. I’m really looking forward to meeting him at the National.
I love the Wills as well as the story of his true rookie card. The 63 Fleer set is under appreciated in my opinion. I wish they had the opportunity to print and release the second half of the set but it’s a great example of how difficult it was, and still is, to get a foothold in the card business when up against the Topps juggernaut.

Hi Drew, Mike is a great guy. It was a very thoughtful gift knowing what a Garvey fan I am. I was impressed with Wills ability to persevere until he made the majors. I didn't realize he spent nearly a decade in the minors. Most players would have given up on their dream. Maury dedicating pretty much his entire life to baseball gives you an idea of how much the sport means to him. It made me even happier to add the 63 Fleer to my collection. Originally, I mainly wanted it to display with my 62 Topps cards since he was the MVP that year.

Hi Terry! What a great gift from
Mike. I’m glad you’re going to finish the Steve Garvey run with that push from Mike.
My dad showed me last weekend that he started doing a Jim Hart run. I smiled when I saw his ‘76 and loved you gave Hart some recognition. I was at a show where Hart was signing. A couple of years ago. You wouldn’t believe the amount of people there to get his autograph. Just shows his popularity that you mentioned.
The Mahovlich looks really sharp and it looks fantastic next to the others. Nice add with the Wills ‘63
Fleer. I’m a big fan of that set. I respect his reason for not signing with Topps for so long.
Great acquisitions, Terry and a great video. Hope you have a great weekend.

      @tjmacvintagecardsnostalgia648  หลายเดือนก่อน

Hi Andy, yeah, Mike surprised me with a pretty awesome card. It definitely gave me the push to finish it.
How funny your dad is starting a Jim Hart run. What a great idea. I didn't realize how popular he still is in St. Louis until I started my research for this video. Thanks for sharing how his autograph is in high demand. I am not doing his run, but I do have his rookie and 1975 which I haven't shown on my channel yet. I plan on showing his rookie on a future video of a special quarterback collection I have put together. I remember him growing up but he was past his prime by then. 1975 Topps is my favorite football set from the 1970s and I wanted the Hart because he was at his peak during that time. I have the Metcalf and want to add a Mel Gray.
I am not sure I clearly conveyed in my video, but Maury Wills is one of the most impressive baseball players I have read about. I admire how he persevered for ten years in the minors before finally breaking into the majors. It shows how much he loved the game and believed in himself. I love to have players like him in my collection.
      Take care, my friend.
P.S. Tell your dad he has good taste by collecting both Boyer and Hart. Not that he needs me to tell him that.

What a great gift of the Garvey card! Mike is a great guy! So thoughtful of him, and it went from one good home to another. It's nice to see Hart get some recognition. He did have some moments. The 79 The Theismann is a favorite of mine. It's over of the first"older" cards of a player I knew as a kid in '87 when I was opening packs. I still remember first getting that card. I loved that era of football when you could see non-hall of famers like Hart, and Brodie, Nelsen, Hadle and Manning (Archie) and wonder how much greater they would have been if they were on better teams. As for Maury Wills, I only got a chance to see him play in his later years, but man he was still exciting to watch when he got on base. Thanks for another great video, Terry!

      Hi Mike!
Yes, Jim Hart is someone you don't hear as much about nationally, but he is still beloved in the St. Louis area. I only saw him towards the very end of his career, but I remember my brother having some of his cards from the 1970s. Yes, I remember the discussions like, "What if Manning was on the Steelers and Bradshaw was on the Saints?" Who knows? But it was fun to speculate.
I enjoyed learning more about how Wills made it to the majors. I gained even more appreciation for him as a person and player because of his journey. It would have been easy for him to quit after being in the minors for so long.

Nice 76 Topps Jim Hart! I really like that set. I remember Hart from the end of his career, late 70s early 80s. Definitely an under rated player.
Love the 63 Fleer Wills and the 71 Topps too LoL! I knew he boycotted Topps but didn’t really know the full story why, interesting that Topps would have listened to the Tigers. Great point about not being able to tell the story of baseball in the 60s without Maris and Wills!

      Hi Jim,
I did have a nice trip. It was very kind of Mike to think of me. Fortunately, an '87 Topps Tiffany Garvey won't be too hard to find.
Like you, I remember Hart after the "Air Coryell" days when he wasn't the quarterback he was from '74 to '77. My brother was a fan of his. When preparing for this video, I was impressed with how popular he still is in St. Louis. It made me even more enamored with the cards I have of him. I have a couple more I plan on sharing in the future.
My understanding is that Sy Berger changed Topps' approach to signing players to contracts after what happened with Wills. They would no longer be selective about who they signed. I don't know if that is still the case. Wills and Berger became friends later on. It wasn't Sy who didn't sign him but Turk Karum, who was one of Topps' representatives.
      Have a great weekend!

Yes, it was a generous gift from Mike. Garvey will always be a Dodger to me, but he performed well in the '84 Playoffs with San Diego. I was happy for him, given the way the Dodgers handled his last days with L.A.
Hart had a very long career. Imagine if he had started more frequently in the early '70s. His career got off to a great start, but then he struggled to keep the starting job until Coryell came along. My brother was a fan of his. I remember him having Hart's '71 Topps card. Which Hart cards do you have? I have his '68 RC, '75, and '76.
I am glad Wills kicked his addictions too. He was a lifelong baseball man, which is how I imagine he wanted it, given how much he loved the game. I admire his commitment to being better, which helped him get to the majors. Most would've quit after spending that much time in the minors.

Thanks, Adam! I am glad you enjoy the videos. Even though I didn't see Snead, Hadl or Gabriel play, I appreciate their careers and enjoy having them in my collection. It is good to hear from other collectors who appreciate some of the same players I do.
      Have a great weekend!

Couldn't agree with you more about Maris and Wills being a large part of the 60's. Each decade has some huge stars who don't quite make the Hall but are difference makers. Even though some should be in the Hall. Enjoying your videos.

I am glad you enjoy my videos. It means a lot. You're right about the stars of each decade that aren't quite at the level of a HOFer or maybe have been passed over. Those are some of my favorite players to collect because of their impact on the game. Have a great weekend.

    Great video Terry!
What a fantastic present from Mike!
Jim Hart, man was he a good QB! Players like Hart,Brodie,Gabriel and Hadl just don’t get enough credit for how really good they were.
Maury Wills is such an interesting player, it did take him a while to find his game but when he did he had a significant impact on baseball. When you look at his stats and achievements he has a case for being in the hall. As great as his 62 season was I always felt Tommy Davis was the best player in the league that year!
Have a great weekend my friend!

Thanks Steve! I love when collecting cards and reading magazines gives me the opportunity to appreciate players even more. This was the case with Maury Wills. I have wanted the 1963 Fleer card for a while. I knew about how good a player he was and his post baseball career, but I never realized how long his journey was to get to the majors and that he became a switch hitter in 1959. Also, all the work he did to become a full-time player once he was in the majors. He is such an impressive person.
Jim Hart was one of the quarterbacks I remember when I started watching football. Though, he was past his prime at that point.
You have a great rest of the weekend too.

Good luck in your search for a Parkhurst Plante. I have his '68 and '70-'72 cards, but I have not been able to acquire one of his Parkhurst cards either. I have been outbid on a few occasions. Thanks on the Wills. It has been on my list for a couple of years, and I was happy to finally add one.

Excellent video and such a great lesson. I can truly see how you were a coach yourself. Maury Wills may not have been an absolute natural straight out of the gate, but he had the tenacity and vision to see things through and recognizing that and sharing some back story really shows that you respect improvement through work and practice as much as a Derek Jeter rookie of the year type. Basically legend born. But a trained baseball great who wouldn't quit.
Such a nice Garvey. So happy you're going to get updates about a tiffany 87. Super generous of Mike to inspire you.. A Beautiful act of generosity.
I know you were in Florida on business, but it was nice to hear about a friend being in sucha vacation destination albeit for a job conference. Hopefully you had pause to see a sunset or get a nice breeze after the work of the day was out of the way.
Loved all the shares. I'm sure I will talk to you at least once in the weeks to come, but if not. I wish you a very Happy Father's Day, Terry!

Hi Avian! Well stated about Maury. After I acquired the 1963 Fleer card, I spent some time learning more about his career, especially his time before entering the majors. I was impressed with his drive to make it to the majors. Imagine becoming a switch hitter at 25! What a great role model.
It was nice to travel to Orlando for a few days. I did have dinner with a friend I worked with years ago. I was also able to take walks and enjoy some of the scenery around the hotel. It would have been nice to have the family with me, but there wasn't time to go to Disney or Universal Studios.
Thanks for everything, my friend. I hope you have a great rest of the week.

Hi Terry! Always happy to see you make a new video. That was a nice gift from Mike with that Topps Tiffany card. You're almost there with your Steve Garvey player collection. That Sport magazine. is that from 1965 or 66? I like the Hank Aaron cover story question.
Those Leafs cards from the 1959 Parkurst set are very nice. Just love the white and yellow in the back.
Wow, Jim Hart. There is a name from the past. Where are Mel Gray and Terry Metcalf? That team from the mid to late 70s had a nice run there. I used to love watching them. Love that Joe Theismann card. Never understood how he played QB with that face mask.
OHHHHH I love that magazine at the end with Koufax and Wills. That's a very nice piece. Maury Wills got off to a late start in the MLB, but he still had a nice career. I don't think Wills was held back either. If he had been ready in 1956/1957 to start at shortstop, they would have removed Pee Wee. The Dodgers had no issues replacing long time players. I need to get that Roger Maris RC....someday!
Thanks for sharing, Terry. Have a great weekend!

      Hi Rick,
Yes, it was a very thoughtful gift from Mike. Now I just need to add the 1987. The Sport is from October 1965. There are many Dodgers covers from the mid-1960s, and for whatever reason, my father-in-law had a bunch of them.
I have Terry Metcalf but no Mel Gray. I am looking to add his '75 Topps at some point. Yeah, Theismann liked the single-bar facemask like the kickers wore.
Maury Wills has a Hall of Fame case based on what he did for the running game alone. I think in 1962 he had about 17% of all the stolen bases in the National League. I admire him even more after reading the article. He was so committed to being a better hitter. Like I said in the video, he is a key player of the 1960s even though he is not in the Hall of Fame, just like Maris and McLain too. I love the look of the '63 Fleer card.
      Thanks, Rick!

How was Orlando? Although you were there for business did you have anytime for fun things? did you see the arena where the Magic plays?
    nice 1983 , 1986 and 1983 Traded Steve Garvey ,
so 1956 set is your favorite set or is there a set that you grew up with that's your Favorite?
Nice Bert Olmstead , sweet 1959 Johnny Bower.
very nice 1959 Frank Maholivich , Peter played for us!!!
how does Bobby Hull lose to anybody NOT named Gordie Howe or Bobby Orr? I understand Frank Maholivich is great Hall of famer but Bobby Hull is the 2nd name in Hockey?
    Those Leafs do look sharp!!!!
    Nice 1976 Jim Hart , 1979 Joe Theisman ,
    Nice Maury Wills ,
    Nice Roger Maris !!!
does it seem strange unfair however you want to say it that some players with great numbers like Wills , George Foster Roger Maris don't get the attention that Biggio , Bagwell get Ruben Sierra ?
so is Jim Hart the ST.Louis player of the 70's or is it Lou Brock?
How many players that are family members played for a Rival team like Frank played with Toronto and Peter played with us any sport but Rivals
    ? can you think of?

      Hi Mark,
No I didn't get to see the Orlando Magic Arena. I was able to walk around the area some and had delicious meals.
1956 is my favorite set. Growing up I liked 1981 Topps Football and 1987 Donruss Baseball the best. What are your favorites sets?
Jim Hart was who the St. Louis station said was the player of the 70s. You could make a case for Brock too, but I believe the viewers voted on it.
I do think it is unfair to compare eras as the game was different in the 60s vs. the 90s. I know WAR is supposed to account for that, but I don't believe it does.
Walter and Eddie Payton, Joe and Dom Dimaggio and Jason and Travis Kelce. are a few.

Curious, a lot of your cards are slabbed but your magazines aren't, what are your thoughts on grading magazines? I have a ton of potentially high dollar magazines that I'm torn on getting graded. I hate to see the content literally get buried, but ya hate to leave so much money on the table.

    • @tjmacvintagecardsnostalgia648
      @tjmacvintagecardsnostalgia648  หลายเดือนก่อน

Most of my cards are graded, with the exception of the majority of my sets. I have my reasons for preferring graded cards; unlike magazines, you can see all you need to in the slab. While I'm not opposed to magazine grading, I prefer them ungraded so I can carefully go through them.
Vintage newsstand Sports Illustrated magazines featuring prominent players' first covers or other key issues in great condition could hold significant value. Subscription issues, with or without the label, are rarely worth grading as they are much more common than newsstand editions. Modern Sports Illustrated magazines can be valuable, but they must be in pristine condition. Although I collect magazines mostly for research, nostalgia, and display purposes, I primarily seek out newsstand issues. While my father-in-law's collection mostly consisted of newsstand editions, they are not incredibly valuable. Not that I am selling them anyway. While Sport and other publications can have value, Sports Illustrated reigns supreme.
