Excellent advice, Terry. Enjoy what you have and appreciate the beauty of each card for what it represents, whether it invokes a fond memory, a significant time in your life or simply allows you to drift off in your imagination. Thanks for showing us some wonderful cards and prompting us all to take another look at our cards and love them because, well, just because.

Hi Rob, You summed it up perfectly. I find fulfillment in collecting cards that express who I am as a person. It may be silly to non collectors who wonder why someone would pay all that money for an old card that has no intrinsic value. I can’t say they’re wrong when looking at it objectively. However, collectors like you and I understand that the cards we acquire are more important than the money because they take us back to our childhood. The power of nostalgia makes it worth the price.

Thanks Fabien! The 61 Fleer set is a fairly unique issue for the time. Like I said, there are not many cards with game day photos from that era. You have a great weekend too.

It’s crazy how alike you and myself are alike when it comes to the “slow down and ponder” as we ponder and pour over our collection.
My 59 Koufax is one of the few graded cards in my collection. Nancy purchased it for me when we were dating. She recounted the story of a dealer convincing her how it was “the most desirable Koufax card for collectors “. I knew he probably said that because it was only Koufax card he had to sell but the fact that she looked up where a card shop was, went there with the knowledge that I liked Koufax, and purchased the card for me makes it so much more special than just having it in my collection.

Hi Drew, we are definitely personalities that like to take our time. I think it has done us both well in building collections reflective of our love of sports and the hobby. I thought about your 59 Koufax story when I was preparing for this video as I remember your awesome display. While the 59 is a beautiful card, I am not so sure it is the most desirable. Lol. You're right about the thoughtfulness on Nancy's part in searching for a Koufax for your collection. Take care.

Hi Terry! It was great to hear how you were able to take some time and enjoy what you have. That’s what’s important of the hobby.
I also enjoyed the story about seeing the Koufax card for $18 with your mom at the garage sale. What a memory you have. It’s so fun looking at the card and the memories it brings. Kirby Puckett was my Koufax. It was a name I had never heard before but thought it was a cool name.
I agree with you about watching videos and listening to the condition talk. I just like to see why people bought the cards and the reasoning. And also seeing ‘61 Fleers doesn’t hurt! It’s such a fantastic set.
Nice ending. It’s a good reminder to enjoy what we have. Something important for all of us to hear and remember. Have a great weekend!

    • @tjmacvintagecardsnostalgia648
      @tjmacvintagecardsnostalgia648  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

Thanks Andy! The Koufax story just came back to me when I saw it. I have displayed that card at times but it is always with others. Last week I was picking up cards one by one and the memory just hit me. Yes. Puckett has one of those catchy names.
With regard to condition, to each their own, but hearing centering or undergraded frequently discussed makes me zone out and lose interest. A mention here and there to make a point I can appreciate. There is so much more to cards than that. Condition matters to me, but like I said it is a means to an end. I don’t want to dwell on it.
The 61 Fleer set is awesome. I overlooked it for so many years, but it is the perfect set for where I am at now with the hobby.

Very cool story about the Koufax card. It’s amazing the memories we have made and can recall about just a small piece of cardboard. When a card is just more than a card. Thanks for the great story!

Hi Steve. Yeah, it is hard not remember that story when I see that Koufax. I am sure young Steve would love your collection too.
There were some historians/statisticians who went back and figured out sack totals from 1960 on. Football Reference actually includes them. Robustelli was believed to of had 52.5 sacks from 1960 to 1964.
He played nine seasons before that which makes me think he would have at least 120 sacks. Probably more.
      Thanks, my friend.

More than the $5 I was packing! 😂 Some things never change. Maybe the dollar amount but we are still limited to what we can afford which is a good thing.
I enjoyed the Koufax story. It’s those types of memories that give the cards their real value outside of monetary value. Nice reminder that the hobby is more than accumulating.

    • @tjmacvintagecardsnostalgia648
      @tjmacvintagecardsnostalgia648  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

Yeah, $5 wasn't getting you too far even back in 87. The good thing is I even tried to stay in my budget back then. Granted, I didn't have much choice. Haha.
It was nice to the Koufax and being reminded of that story. I bought that card so long ago. I think it is a good reminder for all of us to enjoy what we have. It goes with sharing your cards as well. I think some people feel they have to point out the flaws on their cards rather than talking about why they purchased it. I love videos where people talk about why they added card to their collection. It is more interesting than I picked up this Roberto Clemente, it is off centered left to right, has a banged up corner and this gunk on the side, but I still think it is a nice card. Thanks! Way to share your excitement. Haha.

  • @MrRigamortis86
    @MrRigamortis86 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

My, these videos just settle my mind and have a gentle perspective and quiantness all of their own.
The musings on the Andy Robustelli card are as melodic as the oldies playing on an AM FM radio during long soothing car rides in my families vehicle from my childhood.
What you've given us is subtle reminder to sit back and see our cards again for the first time and even hear these players' names as we did for the first time.
Sandy Koufax: yes I can just imagine that card on the corner of that fold out table. In my mind, stubborn childhood bravado might of had me trying to offer the 5 dollars for the Koufax. But even then you were all class, Terry.
My dad talked alot about Don Drysdale in terms of Dodger Blue pitching.
I grew up in San Pedro the LA Harbor South Bay area. We had the pleasure of Vin Scully announcing our games and he was often partnered with Big Don.
To be honest Mr Drysdale struck me as a very warm, friendly older gentleman that would add insight and anecdotal backgrounds.
Mr Scully would deliver the Farmer John beef frank ad once or twice a game and they were outstanding together.
Don sounded like just about the friendliest most cordial fellow I could imagine. I'd sit drawing to that comforting baseball action at home and on drives home from school as they were also the voice of Dodger Radio in the 1980s. Whatta guy I'd think. I wish I could meet him
But when I got older I came to know the Mr Drysdale of his youth while Im sure a very jovial and approachable man was to be feared in his prime. Like a real fear akin to the correct reaction to a wild bear.
This jarred me to no end haha. But my dad knew and my grandma knew. I bet my mom knew it. I was safe in my assumption that Don Drysdale was as harmless as a grandpa dispensing Worthers Original to his Grandkids, but he was a beast of a man on the mound as certain as there ever was one.
In a sense I heard his name for the first time not just the once from the announce booth giving color commentary to Scullys Play by Play but as the bull who owned the plate with regard for no man. It was a lesson for the grown up I am, not the kid I was. Sucha kind smile in Dodger blue for sucha dominating force. I can better separate the two. Maturity tells us that there's a duality to work life and homelife, but I wasn't ready to know that the same man who could go to war on the diamond was also the sweet guy behind the mike with the distinct timbre and charming beam. My was I a fragile lad.
Your memories tap us into our own. I hadn't thought about that connection from Drysdale's prime to twilight years in about 20 yrs myself. I dont think this world softens a man so much a man like that just knows he's made his point.
Haha here I am laughing. Thanks Terry. These videos are sucha joy
Ty for your shares. For your insights and appreciations. Great to see the 61' Paul Hornung card. It's a striking photo and looks terrific in it's case. Im so thrilled that your week away gave such time for reflection. This was a great share!

      Hi Avian,
You're always bringing a smile to my face with your comments. Thank you! Yes, it nice to take a break sometimes to collect my thoughts and enjoy other parts of my collection. Curation is an important part of collecting because it enables you to enjoy your items even more. I also believe in content curation as well. I like to stop and reflect sometimes on what I am sharing with others. I don't want my videos to come across as meaningless chatter, but something that give both meaning and enjoyment.
The dichotomy that is Don Drysdale. Mean and nasty on the mound. Yet, kind and gentle off of it. I enjoyed hearing our thoughts and experiences growing up listening to him. I remember him from the Brady Bunch long before I saw footage of him pitching or as an announcer. He gave it to Greg straight about how tough the road to the majors is. At least he did after Mr. Brady had a talk with him. Haha. Drysdale reminds of me of Dick Butkus and Deacon Jones. Two players that were terrors on the grid iron, but fun loving guys off of it. You saw Dick Butkus in movies and shows like My Two Dads and you sarcastically think this was the most feared player in football. The same could be said for Drysdale. Your experiences with Don with were so vivid. I felt like I was there with you.
      Thanks, as always, my friend.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

Love the Koufax story Terry, it is really what the hobby is all about. As I continue to evolve as a collector I find myself being drawn to the players of my youth or the ones I read about in my youth.

Hi Steve! I display a some of my cards but it was nice to pick them up and enjoy them one at a time. I don’t do that often enough for some of them. The Koufax story just came back to me. The 63 is my favorite looking card of his, but the 59 has the most sentimental value. Sandy really doesn’t have any bad cards.
Yeah, I think most of us like to look ahead to the next card. That’s understandable, but there is joy in admiring the cards we have. Especially, collectors like us who have a lot of emotional connection to our cards. You have a great weekend too.

Well said! I found myself feeling almost depressed a time or two watching all these great TH-cam channels with all these great cards and collections. I felt anxiety as I thought I needed to buy higher graded cards for my collection. I forgot what collecting means to me and that it’s ok because it’s MY collection. I’m actually focusing my collection now on non-graded but still presenting the cards in a nice way (ie with labels and such). I may even make my own video one day who knows.

      @tjmacvintagecardsnostalgia648  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

Thanks for watching and taking a moment to share your thoughts. I know what you mean when watching channels and see some great collections. I try to stay away from the content that shows off cards and doesn't give you much more beyond condition and value. While it is nice to have cards that are valuable and in great condition, it is not something I am looking to watch. I like channels that inspire, share stories, teach about the cards and the history of game. Never feel you need to buy anything to please anyone else. I know that sounds like obvious advice, but it can be easy to fall into that trap. Let me know if you ever make a video. I would be happy to subscribe and check it out.

Terry I think it's safe to say you and I both are more about the players more so than collectors who need to collect all the big cards in the hobby. There's a reason why I collect certain players, some that others may question why. My friends that don't collect see my cards and know why there's a connection. They remember the memories just as much as I do. I don't have too many "must haves" in my PC. Loved this video Terry!

Hi Sammy, yes, we definitely fall in a similar area of the collecting spectrum. The cards are an expression of our love of the history of sports. Like you, I will add a card or other item to my collection if there is some player or event that interests me. Sure, the biggest names are fun to collect and I have some of those too, but the history of sports is deeper than just the top tier HOF players. .

Terry, before I even comment on your video, I had to admire your 1973 Topps Chris Hanburger. I had a Ted Kwalick card from the same year with the horizontal format that I absolutely loved when I was in the 4th grade. Seeing your card brought back a lot of memories.
Okay, onto the video now. HAHAHA. Interesting you brought up Sandy Koufax. For some reason, as a child, I knew who he was but I never saw him play. I knew he was young and retired. I do remember his appearance on Dennis The Menace and Mr Quigley eventually smakced a big hit against him at the end. Sandy had one scene teaching the boys baseball where he was wearing those satin baseball Dodger jackets and I wanted one so badly. I don't think I ever saw a baseball card of him until 1975. That MVP subset featured the 1963 Topps card. That's a great 1959 Koufax. At least you got some 1987 cards out of it.
Isn't it funny that we can now buy the cards we admired as kids? With the exception of one card, I have all the cards in my collection I admired as a kid, When I see a 1976 Topps Fred Lynn, I still have visions of me and several friends behind the hedges at school trying to make a deal as one kid was DYING to get that card.
Love that 1961 Fleer Paul Hornung card. The Giants with the white jersey's, red numbers and gray pants are still my favorite look from them.
Love this episode Terry. Now I have to go back and admire my collection. Take care!

Hi Rick, yeah I was drawn to the Hanburger card because of the interesting photo. 1973 had some great looking game day and action shots, but it could be hard to tell who the subject was. I just looked up the Ted Kwalick. What an awesome action shot.
Yes, good recollection of the Dennis the Menace episode. I love those old jackets too. I always wanted a Yankees one that Billy Martin wore in the 70s with the big NY on the chest. I guess the 1987 Topps are a small consolation being I couldn't take Sandy home. Haha.
The 1976 Topps Lynn is one of the best-looking cards of the 70s. I have it in my set but would love to add a graded one for my display case someday. It is pretty pricey given how beautiful a card it is. Good recall of the Lynn from your school days.
Those are great looking Giants uniforms. I like the red jerseys that are seen on a few of the cards in the set like Sam Huff and Roosevelt Brown.
I am glad you enjoyed, Rick.
      Take care

Thanks for sharing your thoughts Terry! Great story about seeing the 59 Sandy Koufax at the garage sale when you were a kid! When I was a kid I would look at vintage cards of the games greats with awe and never would have thought that I would one day own some of them!
When it comes to cards condition, especially with vintage, I try not to get too caught up with it, when I target a card I just try to find the card with the best eye appeal within my budget.

Thanks Jim. I enjoy the memories that collecting cards brings out. Guys like us have so many great stories of enjoying sports and cards. We can look at our collections and tie them to different moments of our lives. That is the best part of collecting is how it chronicles the events that make us who we are.
I am with you on condition when it comes to my card purchases. I buy fewer cards now so I have more choices. Years ago, I would buy several cards at a time and if the price was right and it was in nice cared for condition, I bought it.

Great memories as always Terry. I’ve been chasing that ’59 Koufax for 4 years now ever since my “Ali-like return to the [collecting] ring” (quote borrowed from Joey Knish, Rounders, 1998). I haven’t obtained it yet but maybe next month at the Toronto Sports Expo. I got to watch Koufax (& Drysdale) pitch quite a few games during their primes on NBC’s Game of the Week & also during the ‘63 World Series when I was 12 when they defeated my beloved Yankees.

Great to see another video, Terry! Isn't it great to have some of the legends of the game that we could only dream of as a kid? Great Koufax card. Love the memory attached to him that you shared. I have many memories of great cards that I wanted and only had five or so dollars, which would be about $10 too little. Many cards come to mind LOL. I'm so glad you were able to pick that card up. While I had heard of him growing up, the memory outside of baseball that I always think of with him, was when Kevin Costner's character bragged about having met him in the movie "For love of the game." 😊
I loved your message on really just taking time to appreciate the collection that we all have currently. Sometimes it seems like we're always on the hunt for the next big card, and just sitting down and going through the cards we've loved whether his children or the cards we wished we had as children and have been able to pick up now, it really is a nostalgic trip, isn't it?

Hi Brian, you're right about how great it is to have the legends in your collection. The Koufax will always be the one I connect with the most. Doing TH-cam videos ensures the memories living on long after I am gone. That is one of the things I enjoy most about making videos. I think the stories of us not having quite enough money makes it all the sweeter when you finally acquire the card later on. Patience and anticipation add to the buildup vs. instant gratification.
Thanks for the kind words about my message. The show and stash mentality can cause you to miss out on the enjoyment of sitting down and just looking at your cards. It has been a lot of fun doing that. While I display a lot of my cards, there are still some I haven't looked at in a while.

I’m going to take some time to look at my collection taking your advice. I love the writing on the card back of the 61 Fleer football. 🏈 However, the card is missing stats of Robustelli.
Great story about the 59 Koufax. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to know either of my grandfathers, one passed before I was born and the other when I was 9. However, living n LA, my dad would talk a lot about Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale as great pitchers. I don’t remember my dad talking about any of the Dodger hitters. My first vintage card outside of my Pete Rose collection was a 1955 Koufax card.

Hi Ken, it is fun to look at enjoy our cards. There is a reason we bought them in the first place.
I know some love stats so the 61 Fleer backs aren’t ideal. There really aren’t any compelling stats for a defensive lineman since sacks weren’t an official stat until 1982. You wlll get an occasional fumble recovery or interception, but the game was more lore which is one of the things I love about it.
Thanks for sharing about your dad and first vintage cards. A Koufax rookie being your first outside of Rose is a pretty nice one.

And yes - all these videos about condition - and grading, and who to invest in. Nothing wrong with using your platform to try to make a statement. On my end, I've been having a lot of fun lately getting various lots of cards in g-vg condition. I love the soft corners, scuffs, and wrinkles. The more commons the better. And for these particular cards, I'm not using any top loaders, card savers, or even penny sleeves. It's great to just handle cards as cards. Stacking 'em up on the coffee table, taking their place alongside the other cards I've just gotten in, they create a world and keep me company.

I imagine the Rosey photo was taken the same day as the Robustelli. Who knows, maybe Andy is nearby.

After all, your collection is really a reflection of yourself. // In high school, I had just finished reading a book about the life of Sandy Koufax when I happened to see a 1966 Topps Koufax in a card store. Well, I just had to save up money to get that card. That is not even the best looking Koufax card. In fact, it is rather bland. Just as with me and the 59, it is your first time seeing a Sandy Koufax card. This makes it special. Someone who does not have your experience can look at it and say, "Big deal. 1963 Eddie Matthews , 1969 Sonny Jurgenson, 1961 Paul Hornig ,, 1961 Joe Schmidt , Andy Robustelli ,
Yeah I totaly understand what you have said it's a lot more fun to talk about a card rather than the grade the picture , the year not a 7, a 9, a 5
sometimes with older cards it's interesting to see the different conditions. but it's nice to talk about a certain set , certain player and the picture.
in my coat pockets when I go out say i'm at a restaurant by myself I sometimes look at my cards I have cards from the 70's and 80's like Cecil Cooper
Lou Whitaker, Graig Nettles like these that I take the time to look at.
my first playing card that I saw that did not play in my time period that I saw at a card show, in a show case in 1990 , 1991 or 1992 it has to be a card fom the 50's from the 50's i'm scratching my head could have been a Mantle, Rizzutto, Yogi, could havebeen a Bob Gibson , could be Roger Maris,
it can be anyone of these players,? i'm scratching my head
    I think 2 questionns
    1. do you remember the first card you saw that was past there playing days example 1976 Walter Johnson, Cy Young any of those leage leaders cards any year? if you saw your first one in the 90's or 2000's that counts past there playing days?
    2. do you remember your first multi player rookie card that you saw?
    3. do you remember your first league leaders card that you saw that's not from your time period when you were 10 or so?

Here are the answers to your questions:
      1) 1961 Fleer Legends Ki Ki Cuyler. I bought it at a card show in 1980 or early 1981.
      2) The first multiplayer rookie card that comes to mind is the 1977 Topps Dale Murphy rookie. There were probably ones I saw in 1980 Topps when I opened the packs, but the Murphy stands out to me.
      3) I can't remember the first league leaders card I saw. Nothing immediately came to mind.
