Nice that Skaght was able to help you conjure up these great memories you present to us today. Such a great piece of art on his part and an equally great story that helps take us all back to simpler times. In 1984 my mind was the furthest from the game of baseball I once loved. It wasn't until 1986 when the Red Sox made the WS the first time since 1975 that I began collecting again. Now that I think of it, I left collecting in 1975 and returned at the end of 1986 with the 1987 Topps. After building that set, I found myself building sets forward and backwards. The 1984 you show never get boring. Keep showing us your cards and sharing memories.

Hi Dan, Skaght’s cards did bring back some nice memories. It is fun to show your cards off in different ways. Our collections all have their own personal meaning to them, but the emotions they draw are shared by many.
It must have been fun for you to collect the sets that you missed out on due to living life. Like i said in the video, the story of Topps is our story. Even though you weren’t collecting the sets when they came out, the connection is still there.
Thanks for sharing your memories as well.

My earliest coming of age moment was January 22nd 1984, The McIntosh ad that appeared after halftime of the super bowl between the raiders and the Redskins. a game which I recorded on our VCR. Marcus Allen's spectacular td run , later that year in June... Celtics v. Lakers game 7 in Boston. The cards ,the sports, the movies, the music, The dawn of a new technological age,the country and it's optimism can't be truly captured unless you were part of it. I was blessed to be old enough to remember all of it at 12 years old. thanks for taking me back to one of the greatest years of my life, 1984. PS ...I left you an email when you get a chance take a peek... health and happiness to you Mr. chairman.... Jonathan

Hi Jonathan! I enjoyed reading about your memories during that time. I remember those moments as well. You're right that it is hard to understand the feeling of that time if you didn't live it. As a Cowboys fan, I was thrilled when the Raiders beat them. I remember the Raiders beating the Cowboys who were undefeated at the time on a special edition of Sunday Night Football. The Raiders didn't have a superb record, but they were very talented, and it showed in that Super Bowl.
I haven't been on my email recently, but I will jump on this weekend. Thanks for reaching out by email.
      Take care!

Nice video! I am convinced the 80s was the GOAT of decades. The movies alone stand out as the most creative and entertaining of all-time. My first pack opening I can remember is 1987 Topps baseball. I enjoyed the gum (I was 8 lol) and my favorite cards were the Canseco and the Bo.

The 1980s were what the 1950s were for my parents. It was a time when pop culture, technology, politics and sports were all in a good place. No, it wasn't perfect, but it was the perfect time for me to grow up in. Yes, I am looking at it through the lense of a child/teenager coming of age, but it was truly special.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and memories. Canseco and Bo were huge! To me, Bo was as big as Michael Jordan. It is unfortunate that his star fizzled out too soon.

" I choose to celebrate the child that brought me to this glorious hobby in the first place" absolutely states what the hobby is all about, fantastic line Terry! Collecting cards brings back the memories of an idealized childhood for me also, times when life was simpler, hanging out with your buddies and playing whatever sport the current season dictated. I was in college in 1984 and it was a fantastic time, a time when you were about to transition into adulthood but still had no major responsibilities! I remember the first time I saw Dan Marino's quick release and amazing arm, or as a Ram fan watched Eric Dickerson glide through holes. Thanks for bringing back those fantastic memories Terry!

Hi Steve, thank you for the kind words. I am glad you enjoyed the video, and it brought back good memories. They were good times in movies, TV, music and sports. Not as much cynicism as today. The 80s and 90s were my favorite era of football. There was a nice run/pass balance compared to today. I would hate to be a defensive back in today's NFL.

As always wonderful storytelling and exceptional cards. 1984 is really the first year that I can say I have very vivid memories (I was 4). From swearing I saw Santa’s sleigh flying away that Christmas morning, to my eye surgery and the care bear I took in with me and the cool eye patch I got to wear after….that was quite the year. Great video TJ! I love how you weave the story of 1984 memories through Topps cards by starting and ending with “The Natural”. 1984 was a magical year for me as I had just graduated high school and celebrated success on the baseball field. Thanks for sharing the cards and memories. Payton was my football hero!
I’m guessing you probably are aware as it’s obvious you are a student of sports history but I’ve read that Hobbs character ( at least the part where he gets shot by his girlfriend) is based on the true account of Chicago Cubs infielder Billy Jurges who played an important role on those early 1930’s Cubs teams. Just another interesting corner of sports history.

Thanks Todd! You picked a great hero in Walter Payton. Not only one of the best to play the game, but also a work ethic few could match. He was also a good man and teammate.
I only recently became aware of how Billy Jurges was part of the inspiration for the Natural. I was well aware of how Eddie Waitkus served as the inspiration as well. The back of his 55 Bowman card speaks to how he was shot by a deranged girl. I found that interesting they put that on a card marketed to children.

    Terry Hello, Ty again!
Like a trusted third base coach you successfully wave us home for the weekend ahead with another excellent, excellent video. This weekend being a crisp but nice one, hinting at the Spring to come and baseball to be emerging from it's hibernation and soon to be gracing the diamond again.
Whatta kick in the head. 'The Natural' Robert Redford's love letter to the early years of Major League baseball turns Forty years old? My, my, oh how time flies.
I was living in Colorado in the year 'The Natural' was released. I'm pretty sure my dad couldn't find a cinema showing the picture because we would of gone. We probably would of even sat in his old Pinto he drove at the time at the drive-thru if he could of found it playing. I had to look it up. It was a month of May release so the weather would of been good. It's a mystery. Even at the age of four I'm sure I of would of been along for the ride. Haha
As it stood, I didn't see the film until 1986 and on home video.. Movies took much longer to release back then and as we can remember, the studios often opted to theatrically rerelease the big hits, so vhs had to wait. I finally was fortunate enough to see 'The Natural' for the first time on a big screen. A big screen television. My uncle living in Las Vegas had one of those enormous boxy big screen TVs and while visiting him he played the movie for us. It might of been recorded from cable but I didn't mind. I was but six and was gonna watch a movie with the grown ups. I was careful to mind. Even more careful to be invisible. If the third act went past my bedtime, it was curtains for me. Luckily I went undetected.
The crescendo of light and sparks that blast out from that mammothly hit baseball that caps off the movie and is frozen in time on your collectors card made by a friend is beautiful.
As I got a little older I remember that scene being shown in clips set to Kirk Gibson's immortal homerun against the seemingly unstoppable Oakland A's. This time set to 'When You Wish Upon A Star' But nothing topped the moment of impact and the sound and awes of the first time seeing that movie in Nevada. Now that was a cinematic moment for the ages.
Thank you for sharing your 1984. The cards, the empty football stadium. The memories of that exact time. It's so great getting swept away and using our senses as the listener. 1984 was so special. The decade had taken shape and the traces of the 70s were wearing off, but the neons and culture of the 90s weren't even on the horizon yet, no matter what an MTv expert might insist upon.
Your home computer and stories shared just made my day. People may use just the ten percent potential, but this youtube taps into much more and widens and broadens what we might be capable of. Your card shares and flashbacks can do for us so much.
Everytime I hear about 1984 going forward, this videos going to occur to me. Haha that and of course a sudden undying urge to buy some Lemon Heads.

H Avian, I enjoyed reading your thoughts on my video and how it connected to your childhood remembrance of 'The Natural.' I know what you mean about not wanting to be bring attention to yourself when watching a movie that will go past your bedtime. My early experiences were watching the ABC Sunday Night Movies that would go well past my bedtime. Occasionally, there would be one on that would captivate me and if I was behaving myself, my parents would let me stay up until the end. This was before the days of the VCR, and it might be the only chance that year you could see the movie for several months. Specifically, I remember first seeing Jaws on television and it was like waiting to watch the Super Bowl.
Who would have thought that when my dad unboxed that computer in 1984 that I would be exchanging comments on a video I made with people I have never met 40 years later. This awesome technology has provided the ability to bring people with common interests together. TH-cam has enriched my collecting experience by enabling me to share it with others.
Well stated about the connection between the Gibson moment and 'The Natural.' I think of the movie when I think of Gibson's homerun against seemingly impossible odds. A real-life Hobbesian moment.
Thanks, as always, for taking time to share your thoughts.
Have a great rest of the week.

Skaght has inspired us all with his art. This was one of my favorite videos of yours. 1984 was a formidable time for me finishing up 9th grade.
Living in LA that year with the Olympics was great. The only event I got to see was a road cycling event, my dad was an avid cyclist and this made him even more of an avid cyclist.
I was huge into football and Marino and the Dolphins were my favorite team. That offense put on a show for a few years.
We ended up getting a Tandy 1000 computer in 1985. Thanks for sharing Terry.

The Tandy 1000! Yes, a Radio Shack classic.
      Take care Ken!

Hi Terry! I really enjoyed listening to how you experienced 1984. I also really liked how you just showed cards as you told the story. I wasn’t born until 1985 but definitely could resonate with a lot. Especially the bag full of candy. This may surprise you but I’ve only watched “The Natural” once and that was with my dad. I think I was too young to have appreciated it. I don’t remember too much.I never possessed the heroics of Hobbs either on the ball diamond. The “Sandlot” group would be more my ability.
‘84 was definitely a great year for ball cards. Just wish basketball would have had a set. The ‘84 is one of my favorite sets for baseball in the 80’s. And I love the 84 football. Definitely fun seeing Eric Dickerson and Walter Payton together with Marino.
I agree that it doesn’t matter how much we see a card or how common it is it’s still worth watching and listening to what it means to others. I appreciate them as much in my collection as I do in your collection. It’s fun to see rare cards but if they’re only being shared because someone had the funds to buy them and that’s it, then it’s kind of boring.
Thanks for sharing your love of ‘84 with us. Hope all is well and you have a great weekend!

Hi Andy! I am glad you enjoyed. Yeah, I tried to put some interesting combinations of cards together like Perez (at bat), Dawson (the swing) and Ozzie (running after the hit) as I was talking about the Natural, other cards looked good together and a couple were random. I was having fun with it.
Yeah, it would have been nice if basketball did. It was the main reason I stopped collecting it. I just didn't like all the gaps.
I think you would really enjoy The Natural if you saw it again. It is one of the best period pieces on baseball ever made.
You're right about anyone with money can buy a card, but what separates collections is how the collector connects to their cards and expresses it.

Hi Terry, 1984 is a very underrated set for modern cards. I never bought the set but every time I see cards from that set, I find myself liking them. I like the Rickey Henderson card, but the Reggie Jackson card you have is nice.
I love The Natural. I haven't seen it in years, but I remember just loving the whole story. I think that ballpark the Knights played in was in Buffalo? The 84-85 Topps or OPC had the Steve Yzerman RC and it was pricey back in the 90s. Have no clue what it goes for now. I miss the Hartford Whales uniforms. Looks great on the Ron Francis card.
I can tell the 1984 football cards were not on my frequency because I don't think I ever seen that Walter Payton card. I like Bradshaw card. The 1984 George Brett looks similar to the 1979 Topps card of his. A nice selection of cards tonight, Terry!
1984 was a great year. The Summer Olympics were here in LA. That was a fun summer! Take care, Terry!

Thanks Rick! I agree with you the 1984 baseball set. I like all three Topps offerings from that year.
Yes, the ballpark was War Memorial Stadium which no longer exists. The Pirates Manager at the end of the movie was former Brave Sibby Sisti. I work with the husband of his granddaughter. He lived in Buffalo and was an adviser on the film.
Yes, I can see the connection between the 84 and 79 Topps Brett. The 84 Bradshaw is a cool card. That may be from his last game. I know he injured his arm against the Jets. I should look it up.
It must have been awesome being in the city where the Olympics were held.

84 has a special meaning for me as well. I don’t remember it as well as you but I remember the excitement my mom and others had when the Tigers won it all. I know I have said it numerous times but your comment about people not wanting to show the common cards. I understand that thought process as well but it’s not just about the card, it’s about the memories or what that card means to any one person compared to the next. Great video as always.

Great video, Terry! 1984 was a great year. Don't you love that image Skaght sent?! I I'm a big fan of the natural. There are a lot of great baseball movies, with Fields of Dreams being my favorite. I can see how that movie could really help you appreciate the history of the game and that old time baseball. I did the same things with Lemon heads as a kid 😁
I love the '84 LT card. That expression on his face! 😁 I really loved seeing the different shooters cards of the year shared together like that. Really nice designs for all three. Love that Payton card! Big year for him and those two young players to his right. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks Brian! Yeah, I was happy to get the Roy Hobbs and Roger Maris. Skaght is so talented. Field of Dreams is my favorite too, but The Natural is not far behind. I would include Major League in there too. I still struggle suck on Spree, Sweet Tarts, Lemon Heads and all those types of candy. I have little will power. Haha
Great point about the LT card. When I saw the Marino and Dickerson, I realized that both the rushing and passing records were broken in the same year. It really showed how the game was changing but also the talent that was coming into the league. I am so glad I was old enough to see 80s and 90s football which was the best.
I saw your 77 video the other day and plan to leave a comment tonight. I just didn't have a chance the other day. I was looking forward to it, and it didn't disappoint.

Well said Terry. I don’t know how many times I have seen these cards you showed, undoubtedly thousands but as you said it’s more about the connection you feel from them.
1984 has tremendous memories for me as well. Personally I always favored the Topps Mattingly over the Fleer or Donruss and at the time Nono e was hotter than Donnie baseball. I remember the dominant Gooden, a Pitcher the likes I had never seen before.
1984 was around the time I was paying more attention to Hockey and realized just how good Gretzky was. The Tony Gwynn reminds me of the 1984 World Series in that while I was a fan of Gwynn and in most years would have pulled for him and the Padres to win, alas I had a Biology teacher that I didn’t like very much and her nephew Kurt Bevacqua played for the Padres so I was pulling for the Tigers. As I grew older I realized Mrs Bevacqua was I really good teacher and she just pushed her students to excel.
I’m not football, our Dallas Cowboys were showing signs of fading but I celebrated the e en quicker demise of the Steelers and this year Bradshaw always reminds me of that. 😁
Thanks for sharing your childhood memories with us Terry.

Thanks Chris! Yeah, guys like us see these cards as a time capsule not only to the game gut to our memories. That is why it never gets old having them in my collection. The 84 Donruss was untouchable for me. I prefer the Topps as well, but I bought the 84 Donruss early on when I got back into collecting again. I always wanted to own one.
That is a funny story about Mrs. Bevacqua. I think most of us had a teacher that we look back at and think they were only trying to do the right thing. The world needs more like them.
Yes, the 84 Bradshaw was definitely a reminder of the decline. He didn't even play that year.

Your story is very familiar, I was also 10 in 1984, BUT we got a Commodore '64. We had our favorite games as well. Buck Rodgers, Summer and Winter Olympics, and Dig Dug are some of the once I can remember. Oh, and somehow my cousin got a hold of a strip poker game, we always celebrated when we beat it but 64 bit nudity still leaves a lot to the imagine. 84, 85, and 86 seem to be the sweet spot for most of my great memories. 5. Did you get a chance to see any part of the stadium serise last week?
    6. what do you think about Rangers fans chanting Potvin it was a hit that happened in the 1979 Conference finals with Ulf Nilson his skate got caught in the rut although the Rangers won that serise the Canadiens won the cup Nilson was out of entire Finals so Montreal won in 1978/1979 and the Islanders won in 1979/1980? have you seen that play did you see it later on say on ESPN or somewhere?
