That CFL Cookie looks right at home with the 1963 Fleer and the Jim Brown rookie. Takes some serious confidence to tell Jim Brown nobody would have ever heard of you! Great tribute to a great player. Well done Terry.

Thanks Chris. I am happy to be adding some football cards that I've had my eye to the collection. I know you appreciate that card as much as I do. Cookie was special.

Hi Terry! Glad to hear that you had a nice work trip to NYC!
Thanks for the info on Cookie Gilchrist! That’s a great photo! The War Memorial Stadium sounds like quite the place!
Congrats on adding the 58 Topps Gilchrist to your amazing collection! It’s a beauty and looks great along side the Jim Brown!
Awesome video as always my friend!

Thanks Jim! Yeah, the old Rock Pile was supposedly a pretty crazy place. The Bills stopped playing there just before I was born.
It was nice to finally get the Gilchrist. The timing was right where one I liked was available and I had the money at the time.
      Thanks as always.

Great video Terry. So happy to see a video today from you. I’m learning so much about vintage football from your passion. The cards are beautiful of course & I really like the red color on the Fleer. Thanks for sharing & have a fantastic week my friend.

Thanks Doug! I had a little extra time this weekend and wanted to show my new Cookie card. He was a great talent and quite a personality. I was thrilled to finally find the 58 Topps at auction. I couldn't imagine telling Jim Brown that no one would've heard of you had I stayed on the Browns. Jim did have a lot of respect for Cookie.

Hello Terry, as always i enjoyed to watch the cards and listen (and learn) about Cookie Gilchrist. I remember this beautiful 1963 Fleer card you ever showed about him. Great great pickup about one of his canadian card...😍, great pose on this card. I love too the cover magazine with the muddy field. I have few vintage canadian football cards in my home ; funny Topps used the same design for the USA football sets and for the Canada football sets. Thanks Terry for sharing and Happy Collecting.

Hi Fabien, I am glad you enjoyed. The 63 Fleer Cookie is one of my favorites. Yes, Topps used the same design for 58 and 59, I believe the CFL and NFL designs were different after that. The backs are the same on the 60 Topps NFL and CFL but the fronts are very different.
      Take care

mr. chairman....thanks for the education on cookie, especially about the legacy of him standing up for himself and others. I think you can agree as we get a little older it's not just the athlete we're attracted to, it's their overall character and legacy They leave behind. as Warren Buffett famously once said.." we all sit in the shade of trees that were planted by someone a long time ago." excellent video terry! your friend.. Jonathan....

Thanks Jonathan. Cookie was a special player and person. Your right about appreciating more than just what the player did on the field. There are many reasons why I acquire the cards I do, but one of the biggest reasons is the story behind the player. I want to connect those special moments. Wise words from Warren. I appreciate you, my friend.
      Have a great week!

Fantastic card and bio of Cookie Gilchrist. It makes me scratch my head when I see how many of the great players on the AFL All Time Team are not in the hall of fame. Canton needs to catch up.

    • @tjmacvintagecardsnostalgia648
      @tjmacvintagecardsnostalgia648  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Thanks Mike! Yes, it is frustrating that many deserving players who spent their careers in the AFL are not in the HOF. I think they should rename the Pro Football HOF to the NFL HOF because that is all they seemingly want to let in. Yes, they do have to catch up, but they also need to accept the recommendations of the subcommittee. Art Powell was turned after the Golden Era Committee recommended him. It was shameful.
      Take care, Terry

Welcome back Terry. I'd never heard of Gilchrist until this video. Thanks for sharing a great story. The 58 Topps CFL looks great next to the Jim Brown counterpart. I had to go check if he had a 1970 Topps to no avail. I hope to share photos soon of my mini 70 run.

Hi Dan! I am glad you know who Cookie is now. What a great player he was. Yeah, I couldn't wait to put the 58 Cookie next to the 58 Brown. They go nicely together. Cookie's last card is 1968 when he played for the Dolphins.
      Thanks, my friend.

I have to tell you I could not stop staring at that 63 Gilchrist and that is saying something next to those other two beauties, wow is that an amazing looking card!

Hi Steve! Cookie was a special player who would have been a great NFL running back. He was also a very good linebacker and kicker in the CFL. Yeah, the 1963 Fleer Gilchrist might be my favorite looking card in my AFL collection along with the 63 Fleer Alworth. I am glad you enjoyed. I always look forward to your comments.
      Take care!

What an incredible card you added to your collection! Cookie sounds like he was a tough cookie! Refusing induction to the CFL Hall of Fame because of the unfair treatment of black players and the racism he experienced. A TRUE LEADER! Thanks for sharing

Hi Dre! I missed out on the Gilchrist card the first time it was posted. Thankfully, it didn't get any bids. The seller lowered the price a bit and then I won it the next go around. He was a true leader who stood up for what he believed. I have much respect for him. Even better he played in the area I grew up. Thanks, my friend.

Welcome back Terry! What a fascinating subject you chose to highlight this week! As you know, Cookie also played for my hometown Argonauts & as a 9-year old, I vaguely remember his 1960 season. My biggest memory was his nickname, Cookie, which I found funny for a burly footballer. As you said, his cards rarely come up for auction so I overpaid for his 1960 Topps CFL card last year & proudly mounted it with my Tobin Rote card in my display case.

Hi Gary! It is good to be back. Traveling isn’t too bad but coming home is the best. I travel here and there but not usually on Fridays.
Yes, Cookie was an Argo. That’s great you have some memory of him playing there. I don’t think he had cards in 1959 and 1960. Do you have the B&W 1961? That is a nice card with the same image as the 1958. It is hard to know what to pay for them since they are not commonly seen.
I am glad you enjoyed the video. I love to talk about the AFL.

Hey Terry! When I saw you dropped a weekend video I was hoping it’d be an AFL Case Build video.
Great tribute to Cookie Gilchrist. I really liked that ‘58 Topps CFL. I wasn’t real familiar with those cards at all. I loved the image of Gilchrist and it looks great next to Jim Brown.
I’m glad you were able to find one to add to your collection. It definitely found the right home. It’s fun when a rarer card that doesn’t pop up very often randomly shows up.
What confidence he had to have told Jim Brown that. I enjoy that story. Great video, Terry. And congratulations again on adding the ‘58.

Hi Andy! I am glad you were hoping this was an AFL video and it sort of was with a CFL twist. I have been waiting to match that 58 Gilchrist up with the 58 Brown. The similarity between the two cards makes for an attractive display. I hope to find where the picture originated. The uniform is intriguing.
Yeah, I read a few accounts where he said that to Brown, so I had to include it in my video. I do believe he was cut from the Browns per an article I read in Sports Illustrated in 1965, but I do know the NFL was not happy the Browns signed him either.
Thanks, my friend for always supporting my videos.
      Take care!

Cookie had some kind of confidence and swagger. I guess you had to have that to play in War Memorial Stadium. What a statement about the stadium by the SI writer. I had not heard of Cookie before this video. Very interesting story and great cards shown. Thanks for sharing, Terry

    • @tjmacvintagecardsnostalgia648
      @tjmacvintagecardsnostalgia648  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

Hi Hugo! War Memorial Stadium was like a gladiator arena. They used to throw full beer cans on to the field. So he was tough. He would run over his lineman if they were moving too slow. Funny what he told Jim Brown what he thought of him. Haha. The perfect player to add to my collection. Thanks!

Terry, thanks for the Bio of Cookie Gilcrest and the display of a couple of his cards. He was an awesome talent. I agree; if he played in the NFL, he would already be in their HOF. I have actually been looking for a nice copy of that 1958 CFL card for a while now. You are correct, they do not come up often. My problem is that my want list is too large, and most of the cards I am looking for tend to be on the scarce side. By the way, that 1963 card is a great / classic pose.

Hey Terry. Great piece on Cookie Gilchrist. Just from looking at his AFL photo with the Bills and card you shared, Cookie looked like a beast. Marshawn Lynch 50 years earlier. It's funny cause he didn't look as big in his 1963 card. Maybe it's just the pose. The 1958 Topps CFL card looks great. I would think a card that is hard to find would be difficult to find in a 5, but you managed to.
Oh my, even w/Cookie's size, I'd be afraid to say anything to Jim Brown. HAHAHA! Thanks for sharing this, Terry. Congrats on the pickup!

Hi Rick! I was happy to find one I like and to have the money available. Sometimes the timing works out right. Cookie was special. You figure Earl Campbell was 5'11 and 235 lbs compared to Cookie who was 6'3 and about 250 lbs. Granted, he didn't have those ginormous thighs, but he was a huge man.
      Thanks, my friend.

That looks like a real Football field ?
    Warmemorial stadium ,
still like the Jim Brown , and the 2 cookie Gilchrest cards. The middle card was taken in practise
did you do any fun things while in New York city?
did you get a chance and go over to visit/look at the Waldorf Astoria?
Did you go with any business customers to a Broadway show?
Did you take any water cruise rides night time?
did you get a chance to go to the statue of liberty?

Hi Mark, it sure does look like a real field. I think it was taken in practice too. I would love to see the original picture.
I went to a few nice restaurants for dinner but was working most of the time. Fortunately, I have been to NYC many times and have seen many of the sights in the past. I have more trips planned as it will becoming part of my territory eventually.
      Thanks!

A youtuber recently asked to pick players to represent a decade. Instead of picking the biggest star, i chose blanda to represent the 60's. I see him as the early face of AFL. Maybe i should of chosen COOKIE.

    • @tjmacvintagecardsnostalgia648
      @tjmacvintagecardsnostalgia648  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

Hi Robert! I think Blanda is a pretty good choice being he played in the AFL from beginning to end. He was an especially important player in the first half of the league's existence. Cookie would've been a good choice too.
