Terry you have a gift of drawing your audience into the story. I can relate to the memories you share as though I was there. Your knowledge of the game ( remembered, known, or researched) is helpful in drawing the listener in. You showed beautiful cards of quarterbacks you honor from that 81 season.

So many good memories of the QB’s from the 70’s and 80’s. Just prior to the great QB crop from 83. I remember that epic game between the Dolphins and Chargers. The Super Bowl was as pretty memorable as the 49ers seemingly came out of nowhere if I remember correctly.
Thanks for bringing a little coolness to the air thinking of fall when the summer heat wave is upon us. Have a great weekend.

Hi Ken, that is a good explanation as to why I am thinking of fall. I am melting here. Haha. The Chargers go from the heat of Miami to the frigid conditions in Cincinnati. Pretty crazy.

Fantastic video Terry. Such amazing cards for so many great QB's. All those guys are legends. The 81 season was one of the first seasons that I remember. That was the year that the Giants got Lawrence Taylor. I always enjoyed watching the Giants on CBS and the Jets on NBC. Those were the days when there were no bye weeks. It sure did a lot simpler back then. Less tv channels to choose from and the networks would go off the air. Thanks for sharing.

Great cards and I remember watching all of those QBs!
Jim Plunkett had a few good seasons with the Patriots but they ended up going with Steve Grogan who was pretty good to. Unfortunately by 1981 Grogan’s best seasons were behind him due to injuries!

    @RickAcostaDodgerCardCollector หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Hi Terry:
The first thing I thought about when I listened to your Sundays as a child was the whole east coast/west coast difference. We didn't eat dinner until AFTER the second game. I remember Sunday barbecue's where my parents would serve dinner and my brother and I would both be "there is only two minutes left in the game", dinner would be delayed but just by a few minutes. If the game was still going and dinner was served we'd miss the rest of the game. This was way before Sunday Night Football so once the 1pm game ended there were no more sports to air and I would be miserable the rest of the day. Times have definitely changed.
So I had the Dan Fouts, Ken Anderson, Ken Stabler and Jim Plunkett cards that you displayed. I can tell I was out of the football collecting by 1977 cause I never had any of those cards. I think I had the 1976 Bert Jones cards. Steve Bartkowski and Bert Jones were definitely two of my favorites. My brother worshipped the ground Ken Stabler walked on.
My memory of Ron Jaworski is the Rams seemed reluctant to start him and it was obvious he was a very good player. They were obsessed with James Harris for some reason and then Jaws went off to Philly while Pat Haden, Vince Ferregamo and others couldn't lead the Rams to the promised land and then they traded for Jones and he was unfortunately so beat up by that point.
Loved the look at the 70s QB's. Brian Sipe I thought was going to be a great one. Thanks for sharing, Terry!

    • @tjmacvintagecardsnostalgia648
      @tjmacvintagecardsnostalgia648  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi RIck!
Thank you for sharing an autumn Sunday in the life of a west coaster. I always would hear the network announcers talking about western time and thought it was interesting your Monday Night Football games are around dinner time and it was 9:00 P.M. here.
I loved collecting football cards all throughout my childhood. Fall and winter was for buying football and hockey cards. Being we had teams from both around here, it was that much better.
The Rams would find a way to be competitive, regardless of who was at quarterback. Harris, Ferragamo and Haden all had their moments, but Jaws had the better career. Unfortunately, Broadway Joe did not work out with the Rams. Haha.
That's cool you had many of the pre 1975 cards I showed.
This is a fun project. The cards that evoke good memories are the best.
      Take care!

Tremendous video Terry! Very cool stories from your first season as a football fan! I thoroughly enjoyed you nostalgic tour through the season and it made me think of my first season as a football fan in 1962. The two games I remember the most were the 1962 AFL Championship Game when the Dallas Texans beat the Houston Oilers in the second of two overtime periods 20-17 (I rooted for the Oilers), and the 1963 Orange Bowl January 1, 1963 where the sophomore QB sensation Joe Namath led the Crimson Tide to a 17-0 win over Oklahoma. I became a Namath fan that day! I really didn't know much about football then, but my Uncle Bill was a Packer fan and he was very happy when they won the NFL Championship Game that year! Congrats on reliving a great time period for football in 1981!

    • @tjmacvintagecardsnostalgia648

Thanks Rick! You picked a good year to start following football. That was quite an AFL championship game. Namath doesn't age well because many sports fans are analytics and statistics obsessed. 1981 was a memorable NFL year to remember for me as well TJ as I was a High School sophomore in Portland excited to see how Neil Lomax the Portland State Vikings record breaking QB would do in his first season with the St. Louis Cardinals. Like #5, Great slabbed rookie cards of these football legends. Jim Plunkett was my guy with the Oakland Raiders back in the day! Loved watching 80's football. Great narration to your video and great project you are putting together. I was going to say, not sure what I like better Football or baseball. Fact of the matter is I just love cardboard with athletes printed on them period, doesn't matter which one of the 4 major sports. Danny White also punted for them, correct? I have a 1979 and 1980 Danny White PSA 9's. Late 70's and the 80's are very nostalgic for me as I was 9 in 79' and started my sports collecting journey. Bert Jones, I remember him in beer commercials also. Fouts and Air Coryelwas awesome to watch and that game with Winslow exhausted vs Miami is a game I will never forget as well as the Ice Bowl II as they then when into Cincinnati. These memories will stick with me forever unless I suffer from memory loss....lol Love your story and I have very similar feelings and memories. Thanks for sharing, really enjoy this one 👍👍and until next time ✌out

      Hi Andy,
Plunkett's story is truly inspirational, considering that both of his parents were blind and all he did to help them growing up. Although I didn't know about all that, as well as his struggles in the NFL, I always liked him. Knowing that now, I like him even more.
I enjoy collecting both baseball and football equally. I just buy more football cards because my baseball collection is larger. I am also becoming more knowledgeable about the football players of the '40s and '50s. There were so many great players I know little about. There are some beautiful cards from that era.
It's great that you have the '79 and '80 White. He has so many great-looking cards, and those two are among the best.

@@tjmacvintagecardsnostalgia648 I agree that there are so many great vintage football cards and players. My issue is that I sold many of my 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's Baseball and football years ago because of financial issues and low paying jobs that I have a lot of catching up to do getting them back in to my collection to pursue a new rabbit hole.....lol So much sellers remorse runs through me at times...lol
Plunkett's story is amazing with all the trials and tribulations throughout his life.
As far as the Whites go, I have missed out on his rookie a few times, I will get it sooner of later. 1979 Topps football was the first Sports cards I ever had seen and trying to put a set together. Started primarily with the Steelers and Cowboys, even though I am a Raiders fan....lol
First non-sports cards I was introduced to were the 1978 Donruss KISS cards.

I opened so many 1981 Topps football cards that year! Those 3 cards you mentioned would be great additions. The 1979 Doug Williams is a great and historical card and I think is a worthy candidate for a collection of collectors our age.

I do think Bradshaw was a much better quarterback by the late 70s vs. earlier in his career, but he was not as good as Staubach and Tarkenton. Sipe from 78-80 was as good as anybody in the league. Being from the Buffalo area, I think Ferguson is under the radar. He was very good.

No matter how hard I try to appreciate baseball cards more, like you Terry, but my first love seems to lean toward football & its cards more. Not sure why that is as I have great youth memories related to baseball & my beloved Yankees of the early sixties but my football memories like Joe Theismann playing pro initially with my hometown Argonauts & of course, my worship of the 60s Packers & their great stars & heroes as you know. Also I followed & liked Jim Hart, Dickey of course, Joe Ferguson, OJ, Reggie Mackenzie, Steve Tasker with the Bills, Stabler, Branch, Biletnikoff of the Raiders, Fouts & Winslow of the Chargers et al. To hell with it, I’m following my stronger emotional instincts with football pal!

Hey Gary, I totally get what you're saying. As a kid, I loved both watching and playing baseball. While I enjoyed learning about legends like Mantle, Mays, and Aaron, my fondest memories growing up revolve around playing football with my friends. The intensity of each game, the drama, and the physicality always kept me on the edge of my seat. Football also seemed to come more naturally to me athletically compared to baseball.
These days, I tend to buy more football cards because they offer better value than baseball cards. Exploring the stories of lesser-known stars from the 40s, 50s, and 60s has been a real pleasure for me.
I know I can always chat football with you, Gary.

For me personally, I’m not into football until September. When I was a boy our local drug store would stop carrying baseball cards in August or September, therefore we never got the last series of baseball cards. Started buying football cards then. My card collecting started about 20 years before you it seems. Unitas, Tittle, Brodie, Kilmer, Jurgensen, Wade, Gabriel, etc. Cheers.

Thanks, Dave. I get why you are not into football until the season starts. Twenty years difference is about right. I ripped my first football packs in 1979, but not that many. I have an older brother who collected, so my mom and dad would let us both get packs. I wanted to do what he did.
I enjoy learning about the quarterbacks you mentioned. Billy Wade is one of my favorites that I've read about.
      Have a great weekend.

It’s funny but as you described your childhood Sunday afternoon experience I remember doing so many of the same things. I don’t know why I stopped being a football fan by the time I started college in 1989 but I’ve never watched since becoming a an adult.
My guess is as life got busy I had to give up things that took chunks of time out of the week. Football was first and honestly now decades later baseball has followed.
I watch the postseason every fall but very few if any regular season games.
I suppose now my focus is on the past and not present when it comes to sports. Part of getting older I suppose.

Hi Drew, I learned something about you. I didn't realize you were a football fan at one time. I don't watch as much baseball as I used to either. I no longer get the Yankees on YES Network anymore since I canceled my cable and transitioned to TH-cam TV. Oh well. I watch it here and there but I tend to be busier in the summertime.
      Thanks for sharing.

These are the QBs I grew up with. Do you have a Fran Tarkenton card? As a Viking fan, he was my guy. So many great memories. I remember coming home from church and grabbing the Omaha World-Herald and snatching the "Entertainment" insert out of the center of the paper. I quickly looked to see if the Vikings were on TV that day. We had an antenna and only 2 TV stations we could get reception for. After the game, it was time to go out to the backyard and emulate the players I just watched. I believe I told you my Jim Hart/Roger Staubach story already. lol Do you have a college team that you follow?

Thanks Drew! I have Fran Tarkenton's complete 1962-1979 Topps and Philadelphia run. Thanks for sharing your memories of looking up the games when you were a kid. Those were good times. I took for granted that the Cowboys were pretty much always going to be on. I didn't see the Bills nearly as much and they were the local team. My favorite college football team is Notre Dame.
      Have a great weekend!

Hi Terry! First, did you have any damage from those storms?
Although we follow different teams, you and I view football the same way. I’m getting really anxious for the football season. Especially since my cable provider removed the Cardinals games and all streaming services black them out. To me nothing beats Sunday afternoon football with the family.
I love this project you’ve been working on and shared. Such a great idea. You have a lot of fantastic cards for the project. The Fouts rookie is such a good card. The ‘77 of his is my favorite. Love that station wagon in the background. The Cardinals logo on the Jim Hart is one of my all time favorite logos. I liked the names you mentioned on who you might want to add. I’d think the Doug Williams would be a great addition.
It was third grade for me when I became all in on football. I still view the game the same way I did back then. I’m trying to get Colts tickets when they play the Bills. Hopefully it works out. Take care Terry! Have a great weekend and great video!

      Hi Andy,
Thankfully, we did not suffer any damage, and neither did anybody I know. I appreciate you thinking of me and my family.
I know how you feel about missing out on the Cardinals. I switched over from cable to TH-cam TV and lost the YES network, so I can't watch too many Yankees games. To be honest, I am too busy in June and July to watch on a regular basis, but I do enjoy having the game on as I relax in the evening.
I have a lot of collecting projects, and each fills particular areas I enjoy about collecting. This one means a lot, given my connection to many of these quarterbacks as a young kid watching football with his dad on Sundays. It is fulfilling for me as a collector to make these personal connections. Yes, I do need to add Williams and a few others.
I like the '77 Topps Fouts too. My favorite is his '78 Topps. I like the photo and the green stripe that runs down the card.
That's awesome you're trying to get Colts vs. Bills tickets. I think the Bills are going to be very good this year. The receiving position will be better without Diggs. He held Allen back when it came to distributing the ball.
      Have a great weekend!

As kids in Boston, we were thrilled when the Pats drafted Plunkett…we had visions of the Super Bowl…and immediately loved him as we did Orr and Yaz…we never cared what his nationality was….the idea that he was Mexican was irrelevant….we didn’t care that Orr was a Canadian…and we didn’t care that Yaz was Polish….it was a pre-Woke time….and far better than today…..

      Hi Kevin,
Thank you for sharing your memories of Jim Plunkett, Orr, and Yaz. Orr is my favorite hockey player. I never saw him play, but my dad always said he was the best ever. It's much better to talk about the things we share in common rather than what divides us. Unfortunately, the latter tends to drive ratings.
      Take care.

you don't think of Jaworski as an Eagle? I know there are players who go from one team to another but how can anybody think of Jaworski as a Ram?
Qb's that are missing Len Dawson , Craig Morton( In a Broncos uniform) Bob Griese , Archie Manning , Tommie Kramer ,
    can i be 15 again?

      @tjmacvintagecardsnostalgia648  หลายเดือนก่อน

Hi Mark! Awww...to be 15 again.
I didn't include Dawson and Griese because they were not playing at that point. Morton, Archie and Kramer are three I would like to add.
I think of Jaws as an Eagle, but his first card is with the Rams which is what I am try to put together for this project.
Good point on the Stabler being similar. They liked to put quarterbacks in those poses during that era.
      Take care,
      Terry
